He quickly climbed the ladder--first mayor of Batesville, then a state legislator, and eventually a lawyer and judge. But the strange twist in his life begins during the Civil War. Baxter refused to support the Confederacy at first and tried to escape north to Missouri. Confederate authorities captured him and charged him with treason. He later escaped prison and spent eighteen days hiding in the woods living on raw corn and berries before reaching Union lines. After that ordeal he joined the Union Army and raised the 4th Arkansas Mounted Infantry, serving as its colonel. In 1872, Baxter ran for governor of Arkansas. The election results were disputed by his opponent Joseph Brooks. Both men claimed they had won. In April 1874, a judge ruled that Brooks was actually the winner. Brooks marched armed supporters into the state capitol in Little Rock and physically removed Baxter from the governor's office. He gathered his own armed supporters and set up a rival government. For about a month Arkansas had: * two governors * two state militias * actual gunfights in the streets The conflict became known as the Brooks-Baxter War, and around 200 people were killed or wounded before the federal government stepped in. President Ulysses S. Grant finally recognized Baxter as the legitimate governor and restored him to office. This cemetery was fun to explore. It was well kept and peaceful!

Throughout the cemetery, I enjoyed viewing the beautiful foliage of mature trees, excellent landscaping, as well as unique grave markers. I could definitely tell that the City has taken much pride in maintaining this pretty property. The drive lanes within the graveyard were all paved, making vehicular travel quite easy for all of the funeral attendees (even those driving large trucks/SUVs). Oaklawn Cemetery itself is actually located alongside Myers and Sidney Streets. Whereas, the administrative office is located off-site, within the Municipal Building, at 500 East Main Street (in historical downtown Batesville). I certainly wouldn't mind being buried here.
