Maybe a hotel? Turns out, this event was hosted on the rooftop balcony party room of a...wait for it... senior living community. Huh??? This is not your average senior living community with the old carpet, weird smells, poor lighting and 1970s library furniture. No, no, no. This place is super upscale. Could easily be a new apartment building in some hipster neighborhood. Apparently they opened four months ago and they are in a marketing partnership with the Alexandria Chamber to help promote their facilities to seniors 62 and up. They have three restaurants, a game room, a movie theater, pools tables, wrap around panoramic city-view balcony, and a bunch of other stuff that would make anybody not be too upset to live here - regardless of age. The food was provided by the in-house chef, who made an appearance on season 2 of Pitmasters. He prepared some lobster rolls, quesadillas, and three signature drinks for all of us mixer guests. I went back several times for refills + more food, lol. They had a full bar too. Not that I plan to hang out here, but I wasn't mad at the networking, the views, or the food.

She literally told me that I personally claimed I would take on the responsibility of caring for my father who broke his hip and had a replacement two weeks ago. Two weeks ago! I asked her to furnish evidence that myself or literally anyone consented to moving my dad out of their rehab over two weeks early from his announced discharge date (04/22) and she could not. She couldn't furnish proof because no one did. Instead of admitting fault, she doubled down and tried to force me and my mom (who literally had a stay cation planned and aren't even around to do this even if we wanted to, which we adamantly do not) to take him home early and against our will. This has been an appalling and traumatic experience that Nurse Lydia alone caused. Let me repeat. Instead of respecting the wishes of the family responsible for the patient - who are unwilling and unable to provide the required in home care for a family member who just broke their hip **barely two weeks ago** she tried to continue to try force us to take the patient on against our will. Before this even happened, The fountains has been notified and made aware on multiple occasions that myself and my family are unwilling and unable to provide the level of care my dad requires (Tier 4 - far and beyond any reasonable person can handle on their own). Nurse Lydia could have taken the very basic steps of asking literally just one person to verify that my dad even had a safe place to go himself. She refused to do that. She literally refused to verify a single person was willing and able to take my dad in before literally helping him pack his bags to leave. Appalling, sickening and DANGEROUS behavior from a nurse bound to doing no harm. I actively fear for my father and my mother's safety as long as they are under Nurse Lydias care

The skilled nursing unit did not have a (AED) automated external defibrillator that could shock the heart into beating again. The director of the Fountains at Washington House Darnell Jenkins stated that The Fountains at Washington House was not required to have one. He provided no further explanation, so through my research I found out that neither Medicare or the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health requires a nursing home or skilled nursing facility to have one. How sad is that! A nursing home and skilled nursing facility without a defibrillator is a sentence of death if an elderly patient goes into cardiac arrest. I guess their so called crash cart was only viable as a refreshment cart for the nurses! How about a big corporation like Watermark Communities going above and beyond the bar? Thats asking too much! They are about saving a shekel or two. If you value the life of your loved one stay clear of Watermark Communities. From Director Darnell Jenkins that could not even call my family to express condolences, to Cynthia Antoine a social worker that only provided 1 regression/progression meeting in 2 months, and some nurses, that lacked compassion, expertise, and caring attitudes led to my Mother's early departure in this life. I pleaded with the nurses to call the doctor or nurse practitioner to see my Mother and they always remarked they would. It was only unfulfilled lip service. In retrospect I should not have asked the nurses in a professional manner, I should have insisted and waited until the nurses called the doctor! Hounded them until the task was completed! But should I have too? That is why my Mother was in the skilled nursing unit and entrusted in their care! I have learned a tough lesson: "TRUST NO ONE". The exceptions to the lackluster care were the Physical and Occupational Therapists as they all did an exceptional job!

They excel at offering well-designed and clean facilities aimed at adult children looking for a safe place for their aging parents. Once you look beyond the sales pitch, you will quickly notice not everything is as it seems. The advertised teaser rates are for a compact studio without any services. Once they determine your "individual service plan" you can except to pay at least 2.5 to 3 times that for the monthly rent. Those fees will only increase over time and faster than the inflation rate. Make sure you are budgeting accordingly. Staff are friendly and engaging with residents. Meanwhile, management is operating on tight budgets and unrealistic corporate metrics. Expect frequent staff turnover. If your loved one is flexible, and engaging, they will be more likely to make friends and feel a sense of community, especially if family is not nearby. Meals are not as appetizing as they could be as they are required to cut corners to stay within their strict prescribed budget. The "vibrant" community doesn't feel that way given their dismal activity choices, but it looks impressive when touring the facility. Lots of repetition and "free is a good price" when you are sacrificing wellness for corporate profit. Sunrise functions like other for-profit senior communities. I encourage you to do your due diligence before making a decision. There are lots of considerations and just make sure you are fully educated and have answers to your questions in writing prior to agreeing to place there.

It was so apparent that Sunrise is hyper-focused on money and not care. Ads inside the Memory Care living room for their insurance services, a giant check written to the "resident" when you walk in the front door, for $2000, I guess promoting the sale they have going on. Not once was the focus on what was best for the resident with memory care, or how they will make life a little easier for the care giver. Zero compassion. The person who gave my tour, Paul I think, continued to refer to me and introduce me to the staff by the wrong name. He also could not remember if I was looking for my mom or grandmother. Little details being missed like this make me concerned that keeping my mom safe is going to be a challenge. I really am not trying to be funny when I say this, but I felt like he was trying to sell me a car. He didn't act like he had any passion for the residents or the care of the elderly. He was following a script and using sales pitches that were outlined for him by Sunrise corporate. He even hinted at putting in a holding deposit to lock in the 15% discount they had going on. For those wondering, pricing is based on the level of care they determine your loved one needs. It is also based on the size of the apartment, and amount of pills they take. The rate ranges pretty significantly per month for these differences. They can also reevaluate at any time they want to, although he couldn't really explain when or why they would. When I asked about staffing ratios no answer was ever given. He continued to run around the question telling me it depends on need. I asked several times what that meant and still no answer was given. He couldn't even say that they meet state requirements. This was when I knew I would not have my mom live in this community. Another red flag, they do not have a nurse in the building 24/7. They have a nurse on call after hours, for anyone doing research this is not a good thing. This means that at any time something goes wrong when the nurse isn't in the building the care team will just call 911 and have them go to the hospital. For anyone that knows anything about Alzheimer's or Dementia a hospital visit or stay for someone can be devastating to their mental and physical well being, moving them further along in the disease much faster than they would have other wise. Laundry and house keeping once a week, a lot of places provide every day laundry, as memory care residents like to wear the same thing regularly, and house keeping 3 days a week or more as needed. When we visited the memory care unit, the bragged about activities calendar was not being followed, instead the residents were not engaging with anyone, just sitting around watching TV which I found very sad. Furniture had stains on it, and the fridge looked like it had been kicked in. The model room we saw smelled like there was a natural gas leak, and when I mentioned that, it was ignored. The rooms were pretty large, private bathroom, and mini fridge and counter to look like a little kitchen, but no appliances. Contrary to other Memory Care unites that provide studios so the residents are encouraged to not spend a lot of time in their room and engage in activities. Hey but at least when we left we were given a chocolate cream pie. I understand that paying for assisted living and memory care can be a challenging thing for many families but Sunrise doesn't seem to even offer a decent price for the lack of services they provide so I would continue to do your research and find a place with a flat rate that is a little higher but where they will focus on the right things, you and your loved one's well being

My parents moved there about 12 years ago when my mother's Alzheimer's was making it too challenging for my father to care for her. He moved into independent living (where, at the age of 90, he is still living with my stepmother), and my mother moved into skilled nursing. She received wonderful care there and was treated with respect. When she passed away, the staff on her floor cried and showed us great compassion. One of the things I'm most impressed with are the many activities planned there. Recently they had a Moroccan festival, where they learned about the culture and customs. They had Moroccan food at dinner that night, and they even brought in belly dancers. The units are nicely appointed and maintained. The entire building and grounds are lovely. The staff is friendly, making a point of getting to know the residents. It's comforting to know my father is living in a place where he is safe and will be well cared for.

Doctors who can't call you back, who have medications being refilled at all different times and amounts. If you want to put your entire fortune down with this place and then continue to pay $5000 a month as well for a place that doesn't have enough staff or proper oversight, management, or procedures come here. Oh, and they also like to use the excuse -- well you know it's the memory - using that to blame or make excuses for their staff who do not do their jobs. One time my family member was waiting for the hair dresser to come pick her up. She say and sat. Thevstaff ciuldnt take tge time to see her sitting on the couch there and tell her they werent coming. The whole management of assisstedbliving which is full of memory issue people is confusing bevause there is no oversiggt, lead nurse, lead manager actively making sure things are done right. They even have a visiting dermatologist, audiologists, cardiologist, & podiatrist in addition to primary care physicians.
