I noticed that the hospital staff (or volunteers) had crochet butterflies with a short prayer attached to them. The butterflies were placed on his pillow and chest. He looked peaceful. The receptionist at the front desk was sweet and pleasant. She took a photo of all visitors for the temporary badge. The hospice is located in a very peaceful setting, overlooking Long Island Sound. I visit them between once and twice a week. I have seen many of the units in here, have eaten the food, met many of the people, rode in the elevators and can give a pretty good review of this place since I've seen other "old folks" homes. Most of the residents in Tower One are Jewish. Ever since HUD took over, the Jewish community within the towers is getting smaller with other groups moving in. While I'm sure it's a great place to live if you're Jewish like my family, I would feel like an outsider if I wasn't Jewish. Many of the units have been renovated. They look absolutely great and have been modernized. The older units are "old". They look like they are from the 70's. Either way, if you are living in Tower One, you have to get the meal plan which is six dinner meals per week except for Saturday because of the Sabbath. The food isn't half bad, but it is bland and people often complain about the food. There are several options. Over the past three years, I have noticed a significant decrease in the quality of the food in the dining hall. The food for breakfast and lunch is actually pretty good. (remember it is all kosher) The dinner is dairy free and the breakfast/lunch is meat free. The best part about living in Tower One / Tower East is the staff. From the administrators to the Security to the wait staff, they are all top notch. They know everyone's name in the entire building, so if you're not a regular or a resident, they will know instantly. If you live on certain floors, you need to purchase Utopia services which is like assisted living. There is a minimum charge, and extra hours can be purchased. The price to live here seems expensive, however when you break it down, it's actually not that bad. Units in Tower One which include the six meals run from $1300 for a studio to $2000 for a one bedroom. This is the total cost with everything included besides phone/cable.

Our biggest gripes are the awful scheduling services, and the very gruff, uncaring women who answer their phones. 90% of my phone calls to the central number leave me feeling the person answering the phone resents being bothered with my questions. Although the individual aides and nurses, have been good, our problem is the complete lack of any consistency in scheduling. Numerous times during these 2+ months, aide visits have been changed on the day of arrival minute. We never receive any advance information about nursing visits except for the planned days of visits. No expected windows of time for their visits are ever offered. We have complained about this for six weeks in a row, and the receptionists who answered the phones simply could not care less. The case manager nurse who took over for my mom several weeks ago has never been back. And with all the nurses, it is extremely burdensome when they never tell us an expected time of arrival, so we have to wait throughout the day wondering whether they will come at 9:00 am or 2:00 pm. It makes it impossible to leave home on these days to run errands, take a care-taking break, or anything. It is an unneeded stress placed on family that could be solved with simple professionalism of informing us of a time window for arrival. I agree with a few other reviewers here that while the care itself is not bad, the awful lack of communication is a problem that Masonicare neither cares about nor seems interested in solving. They seem clueless on what family caretakers are going through.

The overnight nurse staff belittled my father and disregarded his health on numerous occasions. I had to call the ambulance multiple times from which he was admitted and held for a period of times, and they were all because of things that were neglected from his health at Mary Wade. Molly, the social worker, is unhelpful and patronizing. She didn't return phone calls or let me know about important meetings that regarded my father and decisions in his care. This is particularly bad because if you can't rely on the social worker for help then you are on your own. They cut his diuretics which is very dangerous due to his heart failure and he ended up in the hospital. When the Yale doctor told me what Mary Wade wrote on the notes it said "patients urinates too much". The head of nursing was extremely rude, and when my father was hospitalized for the flu, she blamed the fact that he got it on himself. He fell multiple times and became in a weakened state. This facility is one of the worst my father has been in, it looks "nice" for a nursing home inside, but the staff is dangerous to the patients health. My father has been in more than one nursing home for rehab and we have never experienced the issues we did here anywhere else. Physical therapy is a joke here and barely worked with him. The head of physical therapy Beatrice is the biggest issue and they don't work with patients enough to help them get well. My father went to Hamden health care after Mary Wade for two weeks and was able to transfer and become mobile in just those two weeks he was there. He was at Mary Wade FOR MONTHS. Will be reporting to the board of health.
