I visit them between once and twice a week. I have seen many of the units in here, have eaten the food, met many of the people, rode in the elevators and can give a pretty good review of this place since I've seen other "old folks" homes. Most of the residents in Tower One are Jewish. Ever since HUD took over, the Jewish community within the towers is getting smaller with other groups moving in. While I'm sure it's a great place to live if you're Jewish like my family, I would feel like an outsider if I wasn't Jewish. Many of the units have been renovated. They look absolutely great and have been modernized. The older units are "old". They look like they are from the 70's. Either way, if you are living in Tower One, you have to get the meal plan which is six dinner meals per week except for Saturday because of the Sabbath. The food isn't half bad, but it is bland and people often complain about the food. There are several options. Over the past three years, I have noticed a significant decrease in the quality of the food in the dining hall. The food for breakfast and lunch is actually pretty good. (remember it is all kosher) The dinner is dairy free and the breakfast/lunch is meat free. The best part about living in Tower One / Tower East is the staff. From the administrators to the Security to the wait staff, they are all top notch. They know everyone's name in the entire building, so if you're not a regular or a resident, they will know instantly. If you live on certain floors, you need to purchase Utopia services which is like assisted living. There is a minimum charge, and extra hours can be purchased. The price to live here seems expensive, however when you break it down, it's actually not that bad. Units in Tower One which include the six meals run from $1300 for a studio to $2000 for a one bedroom. This is the total cost with everything included besides phone/cable.

They don't pay their caregivers enough yet they keep increasing the prices. They told me it was due to wage increases in CT. That increase is less than one dollar per hour. yet rates per hour increased almost five dollars. For day care their caregivers are excellent but they need to pay them better.

My father was at Mary Wade for months and we had multiple incidents that put his health and life in…read morejeopardy. The overnight nurse staff belittled my father and disregarded his health on numerous occasions. I had to call the ambulance multiple times from which he was admitted and held for a period of times, and they were all because of things that were neglected from his health at Mary Wade. Molly, the social worker, is unhelpful and patronizing. She didn't return phone calls or let me know about important meetings that regarded my father and decisions in his care. This is particularly bad because if you can't rely on the social worker for help then you are on your own. They cut his diuretics which is very dangerous due to his heart failure and he ended up in the hospital. When the Yale doctor told me what Mary Wade wrote on the notes it said "patients urinates too much". The head of nursing was extremely rude, and when my father was hospitalized for the flu, she blamed the fact that he got it on himself. He fell multiple times and became in a weakened state. This facility is one of the worst my father has been in, it looks "nice" for a nursing home inside, but the staff is dangerous to the patients health. My father has been in more than one nursing home for rehab and we have never experienced the issues we did here anywhere else. Physical therapy is a joke here and barely worked with him. The head of physical therapy Beatrice is the biggest issue and they don't work with patients enough to help them get well. My father went to Hamden health care after Mary Wade for two weeks and was able to transfer and become mobile in just those two weeks he was there. He was at Mary Wade FOR MONTHS. Will be reporting to the board of health.

We thought we were so fortunate that we chose the right agency! The next evening, Tuesday, the caregiver did not show up. Matthew apologized profusely....said he had a zero tolerance policy for a no call, no show. My family went without a caregiver for that evening. On Wednesday, Matthew sent another caregiver, also very nice. On Thursday, she did not show. After quite the heated discussion between my sister and Matthew, he assured us via phone and email that he had another caregiver that would be coming on Friday. Matthew said he would be at my mom and dad's house too, in order to make the introductions. Although Matthew did arrive to make the introductions, no caregiver ever showed up. We promptly fired the agency. Three no shows in the first week....very disappointing and disheartening. All the time researching, the phone calls, the meeting...all the time that we took with Matthew...was a complete waste of time. If I could give less than one star, I would; however, Yelp requires at least one star. He spent the last week of his life here and was treated with dignity, care, and respect. I noticed that the hospital staff (or volunteers) had crochet butterflies with a short prayer attached to them. The butterflies were placed on his pillow and chest. He looked peaceful. The receptionist at the front desk was sweet and pleasant. She took a photo of all visitors for the temporary badge. The hospice is located in a very peaceful setting, overlooking Long Island Sound. This was actually America's first hospice. The interior was a bit outdated, but the outside view was beautiful and serene. Rest In Peace, David Kniess.

Out of the 3 months, the Aide was here 10 times. When questioned, I was told there was a problem. My parent had no Aide for the entire month of September. When she became in-patient, giving me Respite, I was contacted 3 days in a row. I was asked questions on how to handle my parent. Isn't this Hospice? Shouldn't they know how to handle a dementia patient???? The nurse schedule changes, no consistency. I'm so disappointed in the non-services of CT Hospice.
