Very nice overall: super-large room, pleasant landscape and pool, and friendly staff. The motel is centrally located in the Gloucester/Rockport area, and is practically on top of Good Harbor beach, which though better reached by car is walkable. This hotel was a last minute one-night booking and it worked out great The only critiques are the room lighting (too dim) and the included continental breakfast (though free, there's too much junk food). Facilities are clean, with well-kept grounds and an expansive view of the bay off in the distance. Staff is friendly. The breakfast, while not extensive in choices, has something for just about everyone. No waffles, however. Seating is outdoors (with two small tables indoors) on a patio that enjoys the sand and water "vista", ordered and served (quickly) through a window. The Bathrooms and bedrooms were very clean. We stayed on the 2nd floor room. The views are outstanding The staff is super friendly and when we check out the owner? reached out and shook my hand and thanked me for our stay. The beach was free because of our travel dates i assume but was surprised how many people would go and just relax. Not too many went into the water like i did but some did. Our room was located in the least expensive section of the motel which needs some attention. The air conditioner was totally ineffectual requiring us to open the windows and both doors each night to cool the room down before turning in for the night. One other problem was a dripping faucet. The Vista is a surprisingly nice place to stay in the Gloucester area. It is nicely located, has plenty of parking, A nice outdoor pool and a good view from the backside of the hotel during the daylight hours. They do offer a continental breakfast, which I did not participate in. I had a two queen room. It was immaculately clean, as was the bathroom, it had all the necessities available, the beds or comfortable if not exceptional, it had a refrigerator, microwave and desk space. Since my visit was beginning of season, it got a little cool at night and the heat worked well. The sign in was fast and easy and the people working were very friendly. Lovely place, fabulous location, convenient to everything in Gloucester. Rooms are very large and extremely well kept and clean. Walking distance to the beach. Within a mile of downtown. Had such a wonderful overnight with my mother and two toddlers last week. The woman at the desk was so overly welcoming and helpful. She went over everything and had a sheet with all the information she went over. We arrived early and were able to check in. The room was just as promised and very clean with sanitizer available. The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the beach and there's a sidewalk to get there which is helpful because it's $30 to park during the week. The beach is so beautiful and the hotel has a great rate including breakfast. I would absolutely recommend staying here and will be back for an overnight with my kids and husband again. The VISTA - GREAT Location, Amazing Views, Walk to the Beach to avoid the expense and problems with Parking at the Beach, but most of all the OWNER is the nicest lady out there. She is Kind, Polite, and Professional. This is my second time in a month at this location, and I will make sure going forward that I will be making this a regular occurance, year round. Rooms are a bit dated, sure. Hey it is not 5-star luxury, but you dont want that or need that. You need a place that is comforting, Covid-free and very strict with cleaning, your own room with a key for outside door lock - so no lobby to walk through or elevator to go up and down / hallways. You drive your car upto your own door, and poof you are on vacation. The Pool is perfect, clean, warm, and as aforementioned the beach is right there. Why pay or want a Ritz Carlton or spend over $500.00 a night on a resort room, you are here to relax, swim, and enjoy the scenery. In fact my first trip here I did not turn on the TV once, no need. I was pleasantly surprised. Great motel with a beautiful view. The room was great with big comfortable beds and the shower was great. We didn't interact much with the people in the office but they seem nice. The breakfast is not that great because you have to ask for what you want through a window and there are not many options (muffins, boiled Eva's, yogurt and fruit). We didn't get in the pool but we tried the water and it didn't seem that warm but it was not cold either. read more

Hotel is pricey - but the views and great. The TV did not work in my room but the staff were excellent and made sure the problem was fixed. Normally I would not even use the TV since the views are so nice..but we had one rainy day. Pool and free breakfast are nice as well. We discovered The Vista as soon as we found out that beaches were opening in summer 2020 (albeit late). We ended up returning four times this season with family members. Each stay was fantastic. Laura & Co. were beyond accommodating, they run a beautiful establishment with the best view of Good Harbor that you could possibly imagine. Great breakfast, heated pool, wonderful layout, clean and quiet and everything we could possibly want in a "home away from home." We'll be back! This is the second time I have stayed at the Vista motel while visiting Gloucester, my husband and I stayed there last year, and my daughter and I spent two nights there while on a New England sightseeing trip last week. I again was very pleased with our stay, the staff are all very friendly and helpful, our room was very clean, and the grounds are beautifully landscaped. The location is great, there's a view of the water from every room, and the motel is very close to Good Harbor Beach. I ve been there before with my late husband . I love Gloucester. The room was clean had everything I needed . The bed was comfortable and I slept well. The breakfast is all I eat in am . The problem the first day I got there my daughter took to the beach as I was walking I tripped over the wooden planks and hurt my knee pretty bad. Salt was great on it. Went to front desk and they had everything I needed to fix my knee . I wanted to use pool but didn't want to go in as it was still hurting . Overall everything was great close to great restaurants we too, a ride to Marblehead for dinner at casa Mia excellent food, I would go back there. Thanks I will return read more

Quaint resort motel with breathtaking seaside views. Perched high on a hill overlooking the marsh and beach, the Vista feels like a step back in time, which is to say, the room interior is definitely a bit dated. Very clean motel and they obviously take very good care of thier hotel. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Its wonderful that they accept pets and have a fenced in area for them. From the time I reserved a room with Garry, I had a good feeling about where I would be staying. He checked us in and I was convinced. He and the entire staff seemed committed to us having a great visit to the area, as well as the accommodations. Everyone was so friendly and interested in meeting all of our needs. Summary: Vista is a really delightful place to stay on Cape Ann. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well-appointed; the staff is friendly, professional, and helpful; and the location and views are just right for a seaside vacation. You should know that my 4-star review is anyone else's 5-star review. This review is based on a single night's stay with two rooms. Understand my state of mind in writing this: it was a last-minute, long-shot booking, so I would have been grateful to get anything in mid-August. And we arrived on a perfect day, warm with no humidity, with a sea breeze blowing through. My review might be affected by the resulting good mood that has stayed with me for days. Some details: Yes, the design/architecture of the property is a bit dated. But it is meticulously maintained. I don't know how they do it, but the seventies-era bath fixtures look brand-new, as if they were installed the week before you checked in. It's eerie. In the bathroom, if there is chrome, it is bright with no pitting or stains. Tile and grout are clean and new-looking. Tubs and sinks are spotless, without even a hint of scale or rust. Even the part of the exhaust fan filter that is visible is bright and clean. The management doesn't just clean the rooms, they DETAIL the rooms. The room furnishings are well thought out, and the deluxe queen room was enormous. We resisted the urge to play candlepins down the length of the room. it's always convenient to have an in-room fridge during a summer vacation, and these are spacious compact models with clever little racks for storing water bottles and a working, but tiny, freezer. The beds were comfortable, if a little softer than I'm used to. The room is equipped with a phone, a charming 19th-century analog clock-radio, and a two-port USB charger with extra AC outlet. That's right, a USB charger for your phone or tablet. Just bring your own USB charge cables. The staff treats you like they really want you to enjoy your stay. We arrived early and wanted to drop off our luggage to avoid having it bake in the car. One of our rooms was ready, so the desk simply checked us in, hours before normal check-in. I can't guarantee that you'll have the same experience, but it demonstrates that these folks really understand their business. They were generous with suggestions for local places and gave us a $10-off voucher for parking at Good Harbor Beach, which, by the way, is walkable via a pedestrian footbridge. We didn't swim in the pool, so can't comment. The included continental breakfast was offered with a nice selection of breads, rolls, muffins, fruit, yogurt, and cereal. Some of the items were local and/or organic, but I don't remember which. This is already too long, so I'll stop here. We'll be back. read more

It's not a surprise that for a local establishment without corporate backing or franchising to remain economically viable, a few things need to happen: a) the establishment is nestled ideally in a place with heavy seasonal traffic, b)the establishment must have proprietors and employees who in fact, go above and beyond the requisite extent of customer service offered by the majority of chains, and c)the establishment must have some type of charm or draw. The Vista Motel met all of these criteria with flying colors, and in depth: Location: 5 out of 5 The Vista Motel is located on a hill overlooking Good Harbor Beach. The view is great, and parking is free. In close proximity is a shopping center that contains a grocery store, perfect for if you are staying in one of the Vista's rooms that comes with kitchen amenities. The location is also convenient to "downtown" Gloucester, should you be taking part in whale watching, or just patronizing the local restaurants. Cleanliness of Room: 5 out of 5 Seemingly, the staff at the Vista take great pride in offering their customers very clean rooms. Although not the newest by any stretch of the imagination, everything was cleaned very thoroughly, and it was clear (at least to me), that they employ such secrets such as Barkeeper's Friend, because some items that typically experience fading and discoloration were well...quite new looking. Amenities of Room and Motel: 4 out of 5 This is a local establishment, not the Four Seasons. There is no room service, there is no spa, there are no boutique toiletries. The soap and shampoo they provide is fine. You'd find them in a place like Comfort Suites or Days Inn. The breakfast room is attached to the main building, and they serve cereal, donuts, and variations of bread. We were actually upgraded to an efficiency that had a coffee maker, microwave, small fridge, and even two stove eyes, replete with some pots, pans, and utensils. I suppose if you are in the area for a week , and want to go to the grocery store to get items for a boil, the stuff they provide could adequately meet the requirements of said task. As I only stayed for one night, I wasn't able to take advantage of any of that. Some rooms have balconies, some rooms have only a little patio area. Our balcony room overlooked the bay and was right above the heated pool. It was very relaxing to watch the sun set, and then the sun rise, from the balcony. Speaking of the heated pool, the hours are adequate (8am to dark) if you'd prefer to swim in chlorinated water as opposed to bay water. Cancellation Policy/Reservation Policy: 4 out of 5 For a local establishment, it's fairly generous. If you don't give them one week's notice, they charge you 25 dollars. Sure, it's not as generous as most hotel chains where you can cancel the day before without any penalty - but you have to understand that part of surviving in a market like this with an establishment like the Vista is unfortunately - making sure that your bottom line allows you to stay buoyant over the winter months. If you give them more than one week's notice, I think it's a 6.50 charge. The reservation process is old school. You call and talk to a live person. Her name is Priscilla. She is genuinely nice, but also seems to be very no-nonsense. You can drop her name at the Seven Seas Whale Watching place, and they will give you 5 dollars off (though I myself did not take that tour). Pricing: 4 out of 5 D'oh. Probably my least favorite of what I encountered. I can't complain too much because in checking out all of the local motels in the immediate area and in the Portland, Maine area - the prices seemed to be similar. We went in August of 2011 and the price for the room that we had originally reserved was 135 an evening (partially obstructed standard room). Upon checking in, Priscilla took a look at the rooms that were available, and gave us an upgrade to a second floor efficiency, which usually sells for 185$ an evening. I mean - there are practical reasons for doing this; for example, if a walk-up wanted a room and could only pay under $150, selling the standard room would be much easier than one of the more expensive rooms. So yes, they may lose 50 dollars on the larger room, but if they can recoup 135, they still come out ahead. However, I still thought it was nice that we were upgraded at no additional cost to us. Therefore, still a 4 out of 5 in this category. Customer Service: 4 out of 5 Priscilla was very straightforward and easy to work with. She explained the policies of the motel very clearly, and gave us tips for checking out the area. It was great that she gave us the upgrade to the efficiency from the standard room, and it was nice to see her having breakfast the next morning in the dining room, along with everyone else. Overall: 4 out of 5 Excellent stay at the Vista Motel. Highly recommended in the Gloucester area, and I wish them all the best! read more

I checked in late at night for an unplanned stay (its a long story) and was very pleased with the service and cleanliness of this place. Those of you who read my reviews have probably already noticed that I'm a bit persnickety about good service and the Vista was great in that dept. The views were incredible. The decor was so bad in my room it was almost comical, but I'd rather have paneling on the walls, ugly carpet and outdated bathroom and kitchenette but CLEAN and GOOD SERVICE than the other way around. Stayed for a long weekend with my family and was very pleased. The staff is super friendly and the rooms are clean. The location is great. You can see Good Harbor Beach from every room and hear the surf at night. Continental breakfast is simple but very fresh and just what we like when we want quick eats that won't weigh us down first thing in the morning. The construction is older so there aren't outlets everywhere like more modern rooms. So a top tip for the more modern family would be to bring a multi-outlet power strip for all the things that need charging. read more

A light breakfast is included and they have a small pool that was updated about a year ago. There is a great little beach within walking distance that is attractive to all ages especially families with young children. Just got back from two nights at the Vista, and was very pleased with our stay. The view of the beach is gorgeous, the rooms were clean and functional and even had small refrigerators that let us keep our bottled water and gatorade cool. The air conditioner was LOUD but it worked well and would cool the room down immediately when we turned it on.
