The cottage was once a summer kitchen, and sits a stone's throw from the main house. Both buildings are of the same stonework style that Mineral Point is famous for. The cottage sports two bedrooms, a family room, and a small bath. The plumbing is all modern, with great water temp and pressure, as well as central air conditioning. There is a microwave, a small fridge, and a coffee machine. Several interesting books and knick-knacks line the shelves, and the main bedroom has a cute little shelf of chocolates. Out back is a little garden and beyond that is the Cabin at Cothren. Both have exclusive parking with direct access to the road. The reservation process was great. We booked online, then the owner (who is very pleasant and sociable) contacted us to arrange payment. She processed our credit card through Paypal. A very easy transaction. Our only comment is that we would have liked to have had a little history of this particular property in a printed form, but I'm certain our hostess would have been more than happy to tell us if we had asked. (I later discovered that there is some historical info on their website.) It should be noted that the whole town rolls up their sidewalks pretty early, so plan ahead if you want to eat out locally. Also, note that although Yelp lists this as a bed and breakfast, it is not.

We only had a couple of issues. The first was that the bathroom sink is located inside the room. I'm sure this was necessary due to the limitations of restoring a building this age. Our main complaint was the loud music that was played in the afternoon. I am not sure if this is a regular thing or just rude guests, but it was loud enough we could not rest after our long drive. If this was just rude guests, I can put it down to "people are people." If this was, however, a regular afternoon thing for the Inn, I would suggest the music be turned down or that guests booking Room 1810 be forewarned. All that being said - we think the Inn is a great asset to Mineral Point.

We had been…read morewanting to journey to Mineral Point for years, as we had an amazing dinner at Kohler featuring Hook's cheeses, made in Mineral Point. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming, but the room we stayed in, #3, was in need of some serious upkeep. Within the first five minutes, I had killed 10 spiders or other bugs hanging on or near the windows. There were also three large cobwebs in the corners of the room. I am not really one with nature, so finding so many bugs in a room was a huge turn-off. The room was also quite cold, and we were told that the thermostat upstairs controlled the heat to all of the rooms, so any guest could turn it up or down. We turned it up with the hope that the party of four staying in the other two rooms would leave it alone - they did. The furnishings were sparse and worn. Of course, the linens were washed and pressed, but the comforter and pillow shams were well past their sell-by date. I'm not a fan of pillow shams in hotels anyway, as they always seem a bit dinghy - I'd just rather have regular pillow cases, wouldn't you? I'm afraid to say the carpet was also quite old. The bathroom in room #3, however, was very large, and included a dresser for clothes (if you were staying awhile, which we were, thankfully, not). We mistakenly believed that the The Coach House was a bed and breakfast, but that myth was quickly cleared up. The lodge, as I suppose you would otherwise call it, did offer complimentary tea and coffee, however, which we drank in a freezing common room. The common room did have a fireplace, but the staff were long gone and there was no indication of whether guests were allowed to use it. There aren't many options for lodging in Mineral Point, so this may well be the best in town. However, when I'm paying $99 a night for a room, I expect something a bit more on par with a Marriott Courtyard or a Hampton Inn (in terms of upkeep, decor, etc.). It seemed to me that the lodgings in Mineral Point were taking advantage of the fact that the nearest major hotel was an hour away.

Our room, called "The Secret Hideaway," was tucked away on the lower level with two entryways, one leading out to a spacious patio. The room itself had a couple full beds and a futon. The bathroom is good sized with a nice shower. There is a TV we never turned on, but I'm confident it would work if anyone required screen time (I did not). There are dehumidifiers, fans and other devices that made the room extremely comfortable despite temperatures in the 90's while we were there. Your hosts, Elise and Kevin, are welcoming and give you a quick "lay of the land" upon arrival. There is a refrigerator for you to store your refreshments, but they provide wonderful baked goods, lemonade, iced tea (we came for Labor Day weekend) and other items in the small community kitchenette. There are plenty of comfortable sofas, chairs and other amenities that have been thoughtfully laid out for guests who are just relaxing on site. You'll see Kevin around the property during the day, and busily feeding guest at breakfast as he is the main chef. Elise greets you, shows you around, and introduces you to the ensemble cast of animals such as the family dog, chickens, and hummingbirds. Almost immediately, you feel welcomed. As you can see from the pictures, the food is as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Fresh fruit, vegetables grown on site and eggs from the resident chickens combine for a great meal to start your day. Everything was delicious and you are served at your table with plenty of coffee and juice available. Outstanding! We…read morewanted to stay somewhere over night, close enough to Madison, but just off the beaten path so we could get some R&R. We ended up finding Prevailing Winds Lodge, and lucky for us there was 1 room available. 2 days later we had to force ourselves to get back to Chicago for work, but we could have stayed there indefinitely. This place just opened up in May, and it's run by a husband and wife team. I have stayed in many bed and breakfast's over the years, but this was the first time I was blown away. There are 44 acres of prairie on the grounds, including a chicken coop that provides fresh eggs for the guests, exquisite wildlife and hiking paths, a firepit, and breathtaking views all around the property. Indoors a 20+ foot tall stone fireplace, antique organ, and gigantic black leather sofa and chairs, sets the rustic feel and puts you at instant ease and comfort. 24 hours a day guests have access to fresh water infused with different fresh flavors such as lemon, cucumber, or berries grown on the property, as well as freshly baked goods such as scones, bars, and brownies. Detailed wooden furniture and artwork keep your eyes wandering and curious from room to room. As a photographer, this place was a dream come true for me. Now onto what makes this lodge the best bed and breakfast I have ever experienced: the food. It was heavenly. Steve and Jen bake goodies fresh every day. While we were there, we enjoyed brownies, chocolate-caramel granola bars, mullberry scones and muffins, chocolate covered cake balls, and chocolate covered strawberries. We stayed out late and missed turn-down service twice, so Steve brought us the goodies in the morning. Guests also have 24 access to tea and freshly ground coffee. For breakfast day 1, we enjoyed yogurt, granola, and fresh berries as well as freshly baked bread, butter, and mullberry jam. Then Steve asked us how we like our eggs. He ended up cooking us each a pepper, ham, and cheese scramble which was out of this world. He even added jalapeños because I told him how I like my eggs spicy! We were served unlimited bacon and his homemade hash browns as well. Day 2 there was baked french toast with an array of sauces- and there is always fresh squeezed orange juice at the table. On day 2 we had unlimited sugar-cured bacon... And anything you want, Steve and Jen will customize for you. They really put you at ease and make your stay as comfortable as possible. My boyfriend looked at me as we enjoyed some Morrocan Mint tea while watching the sunrise outside on the patio, and he asked me " Did we die? Is this heaven?" Lastly, the rooms are 5 star, possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. And the bathrooms are great too- luxurious soaps and shampoo are provided, as well as lush, cotton robes that we never wanted to take off. So call it a bed and breakfast if you will, but Prevailing Winds Lodge goes above and beyond my high expectations. We felt like Royalty, and there is nothing but great vibes there. Cannot wait to return again, and again!

The second night featured an unforgettable seven-course candlelit dinner in the main house. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. We are not B & B people, however, Walnut Ridge is not your normal "communal" accommodations - "Back Again" is an 1100 square foot cabin, well appointed - privately and quietly welcoming it's visitors from nearby tourist locations like Galena,Dubuque, Platteville, Prairie du Chien, Madison, Spring Green, Mineral Point, Dodgeville. "Back Again" is a respite for the weary traveler and casual guests - radiant floor heat, fireplace, stocked kitchen, whirlpool tub - neatly finished in an expertly restored 1800's log cabin - set in an iconic, rural, Wisconsin wooded lot of 5.5 acres. Jill was responsive to our questions and was able to recommend a nearby area for a scenic walk. Cons 1. The website describes the cabins as private and secluded; however the owner's residence and cabins are all within 100 yards of each other, so the feeling of privacy was limited to the interior of our cabin. Cabin Life is also quite close to the road, so traffic noise could be heard even while inside. 2. The website advertises a "continental deluxe breakfast" delivered to the door of Cabin Life each morning by "the breakfast fairy". While the breakfast fairy did exist, and delivered on time, we did not feel that the contents of one small fruit tart, 2 banana muffins, and a scant palm-full of raspberries were up to par with our expectations from the website description. We chose to dine at the Country Kitchen in Platteville instead, which had good food and pleasant service. 3. Hair conditioner was not included with the bath products provided, which resulted in our evening being interrupted by an unplanned half hour round trip to the Platteville drug store.
