A warm and welcome stay The Farmers Guest House is an historic inn with all of the charm that you would expect. Proprietor Mark, his Son Luke and Elaine make you feel welcome and well taken care of. We had cheese, crackers and wine waiting for us in our room. Home make chocolate chip cookies too! The breakfast of a muffin, fruit, crust less quiche and a potato casserole was delicious and filling. There is a nice comfortable sitting area where you can read, visit or play board games. The private garden out back is lovely too. The inn is an easy walk to downtown. Galena is full of beautiful historic homes and we enjoyed learning the history of Galena and the area from Mark. I don't even know where to start but this was a very awesome place to stay! We have stayed in many boutique hotels but this was our first bed and breakfast experience that did not disappoint on any level. Complimentary bottle of wine plus cheese and crackers upon arrival was a great start from some of the most pleasant owners with a mission to please. The next day breakfast was absolutely fabulous, no where in my mind was I expecting this great fare and with mimosas to boot. And then later that afternoon complimentary wine, cheese, crackers once again! Morning arrives and again a truly remarkable breakfast service, my only regret was I just couldn't eat all of that deliciousness. I would love to give this place a good rating. I would love to stay there. I would love for them to answer or return one single phone call. I have called there numerous times, last year and as recently as this week. I get a recording that says someone will return my call, they never have. There is also a suggestion to send them an email. I tried it and it came back to me. Their online reservation system is confusing and will not let me reserve more than three dates at a time. I have a question about that, since I wanted to reserve a room for more than three days. I guess I will never be able to stay at this establishment. Obviously, they have enough business and are not interested in new customers. I will not attempt to contact them again. I don't need the aggravation. read more

We loved staying at Farmers Guest House! The hospitality and attention to detail were incredible. From the minute we walked through the front door, until we reluctantly said goodbye, the owners were friendly, accommodating, and attentive. Mark, Luke and Elaine will make you never want to leave! My sister and I needed a retreat from this stressful COVID season and The Farmers Guest House did not disappoint. We were greeted by name when we walked in the door after a 6 hour drive and provided with wine, cheese and homemade cookies (as they did every day!) Each morning wonderful smells from the kitchen were delivered to our room in the form of breakfast like my grandmother would make on special occasions. We took advantage of snacks in the gardens, games at the tables and movies in the living room. The bed was comfortable, the towels lush and the spaces extremely clean and tidy. My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. This was an amazing experience. Elaine, Luke and Mark run the place and are extremely hospitable. They have every little detail covered. There is umbrellas and bug spray at the front door if needed. They have a table outside your room where they leave cookies, cheese and crackers, Wine.. whatever you want that they offer. It was a wonderful place to stay for our weekend get-away. Luke and Elaine made us so welcome and feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. They were wonderful hosts. Luke's dad the other owner was out of town at the time, but Luke did his dad proud! The food was outstanding... be prepared to be catered to and to overeat an amazingly huge breakfast. The room we picked was clean and charming. This place was my first B&B ever--my bf took me there for our 6 years anniversary, so my reviews maybe biased. But even so, it was by far the best experience I've ever had of one. The owners were so friendly and their house was so warm and inviting that the instance I got there, I feel like it was 'my home'. The decor was so fun and interesting to look at- it kept my eyes busy throughout. I loved how they have about a hundred clocks in the kitchen, and other interesting collections (musical boxes, cups, etc). I also loved their DVDs and CDs collection. Breakfast was homemade and delish. Wine and cheese were served in the evening, perfect for a game of charades with fellow B&B'ers. Kathie and Jess are wonderful owners, point made. Kathie gave me a warm hug when I left and I know for sure I'm going back there the next time I visit Galena. Where else can you ascend 20 stairs to go the back yard? Farmer's guest house is an older hotel for farmers now run as a B&B. The rooms are comfortable. Our room had a modern shower. There is coffee 24 hrs (kuerig). Breakfast is in the large dining room (the room with all the clocks). They also serve wine at 5:00. There is a library upstairs as well as the outside garden ( pretty ). It's a short walk to main st and the historic district. There is some road noise, but not too bad. The website does not accurately show how nice this place is particularly at Christmas. Stayed for a night (not usually possible to stay only 1 night) on a Saturday in December. Upon entry it smelled like coming home for a holiday meal. Incredibly decorated for Christmas but not gaudy. Owners greet you and give you a brief tour making you feel comfortable. We were hoping to be able to have a little weekend getaway from Chicago for my husband's birthday and had never been to Galena so I booked this B&B. Elaine, Mark and Luke were all great and really went out of their way to make our visit as amazing as possible, especially considering COVID. We had breakfast delivered to our room every morning and they were too kind to substitute non-pork options for us, since my husband doesn't eat pork. Most places, at best, would have just removed the bacon/sausage and not substituted anything for it. We took advantage of their specialty offerings and had champagne and chocolates waiting for us when we got there, but they again went beyond and provided him a little birthday cupcake. Everything to make us feel pampered despite COVID. Our room had both a whirlpool hot tub and a fireplace and we definitely used both (even though it was about 100 degrees outside). They have wine time every day and give you a bottle of wine and cheese. We really enjoyed sitting out and playing cards in their back area, where we constantly saw deer and other wildlife. Downtown was an easy walk to grab a bite to eat or explore. We will definitely be back as soon as we can arrange it (we want to check out autumn next) and we highly recommend this B&B to anyone who is looking for a great B&B experience! My sister and I enjoyed an extended weekend in Galena and stayed at the Farmers Guest House during our stay. We were warmly greeted by the owner Mark and his amazing staff Elaine and Luke upon our arrival. Every detail of our stay was thoughtfully considered. The room was brightly decorated. The bed was comfortable and the linens super soft. Our private bath was recently remodeled and included all the amenities . Every afternoon we returned to our room to find a selection of wine, cheese and crackers, fruit and various sweets. We enjoyed the fall colors and our afternoon treats in their garden. Each morning we woke to amazing smells coming from the kitchen. The food was prepared by scratch and included something different each day. You never left hungry as the selections included a main entree, pastries, fruit, and variety of beverages. I'm gluten-free and Elaine did not disappoint. My breakfasts included the same selections as my sister, all specialty made. A large gathering space was available for dining and another for relaxing playing games or reading a good book. I would highly recommend Farmers Guest House if you're planning a trip to Galena. September 14, 2013---A day that went down in history! My partner and I dreamed of an intimate, semi-destination wedding and decided that Galena would be the perfect location for our big day. After all, where in Illinois can you find rolling hills, countless years of history, and wine that runs like the Mississippi River? Only here! We had stayed at Farmer's Guest House three times prior (once with the previous owners, and twice with Susan and Don!) Susan and Don allowed us to the rent the entire guest house and cottage, while assisting us in planning our wedding weekend just the way we dreamt it to be. From the first day of planning a year in advance, to the final breakfast at the guest house, the couple created a fabulous wedding ceremony weekend. From the Galena Cellars Wine Time Happy Hour with amazing hors d'oeuvres, delicious breakfast choices chosen to fit our tastes, delectable warm cookies waiting to be eaten in the dining room, transporting the flower arrangements to the reception dinner location downtown, to the gorgeously decorated rooms...what more could we ask for?! Chicago architect Mies van der Rohe once said "God is in the details." Well Susan's charm and great attention to detail shined. She placed Farmer's coffee mugs with our wedding colors in our cottage, altered breakfast to accommodate my gluten-free diet and our vegetarian guests (including leaving scrumptious gluten-free cookies in the cottage just for me), typed up a menu with the wine time cheese and snacks, and the morning after our wedding wore clothing of our wedding colors and had a mini surprise cake waiting at the table. Nothing went unnoticed! The entire inn is picturesque in every direction you look. It was the perfect place to escape the family while relax before and after the wedding ceremony. Terrific hospitality and value in Galena! We learned about Farmers Guest House Bed and Breakfast through trip advisor, and after a two night stay, are super glad that we did! The BF and I were able to get a reservation at a very fair price (considerably cheaper than other B&Bs in the area) the day before our arrival. Kathie the Innkeeper took excellent care of us from the minute we walked in- she has a knack for being helpful without intrusive or overbearing. She's also very familiar with the area shops and dining options. You couldn't ask for a better hostess. Our first time at a B&B, I can say our room was lovely with a very comfortable bed and whirlpool. Farmers' has amazing shared spaces (super cute breakfast room and a great living space with a huge jazz collection, dvds, board games, books, etc.). I found the whole inn to be clean, comfortable, and homey. The only downside is that it is on Rte. 20 (AKA Spring Street) which has some heavy traffic, so it's not very secluded or quiet if your room faces the street. The breakfast is a heavy continental plus one main dish, which was very tasty both mornings. Wine and cheese hour is pretty basic, but no one shamed me for my third refill! Kathie and Jess are the best hosts you can dream of! They make your stay in Galena feel like you're coming to visit old friends. We've made several trips to Farmers House and have stayed in three of their rooms: Emily and Jess's Fireplace room, Pete and Eleanor's Whirlpool Suite, and the last time, Annie Lloyd's Cottage Suite. I could easily recommend any of the rooms, all were great, and the cottage is very secluded. My husband had a great time talking to Jess about their shared love of all things Jazz - be sure to check out his amazing CD collection. All rooms have a DVD/CD player so you can cozy up with some great music. Kathie will be sure to point you in the right direction for whatever you are looking to do in the Galena area. This is, by far, the best B&B I've ever stayed in. I have been to Galena 3 times now and the other 2 times were at a B&B that is now closed. I loved how detailed everything was, but not overly done in Victorian decor. Susan and Don were incredibly nice and helpful. I have several food restrictions and they accomodated the best they could to all of them. Gluten-free, high fructose corn syrup free, blueberry pancakes were amazing. Wine time at 5pm was entertaining and delicious. I couldn't eat the daily chocolate chip cookies but I appreciate that they had that and coffee around the clock for everyone to enjoy. I wish I would've spent more time in the sitting area to get more of the full B&B experience. This was my first trip to Galena, and we were going for the skiing at Chestnut Mountain and a short getaway from the city. We selected Farmers' Guest House because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor, and we were not disappointed. In fact, we were very pleasantly surprised by how Susan, the owner, accommodated our vegan diet. We're used to having to fend for ourselves when we travel, and vegan restaurants can be a challenge to find outside of big cities. When we made the reservation via Farmers' website, we mentioned that we were vegan, not thinking anything of it. Susan had vegan cookies ready for us when we arrived, and prepared wonderful vegan breakfasts both of the mornings of our stay. Her cooking was delicious! She also recommended a restaurant in Galena -- Fried Green Tomatoes -- that featured a vegan option on their menu. The guest house itself is pleasantly offbeat, historical and eclectically decorated. It all comes together in a homey, warm atmosphere that makes you feel like you've escaped the rat race. Our room was pitch perfect, in the rear of the building, on the second floor, away from the road. It was quiet and cozy, and the bed was very comfortable. The location is ideal for easy access to downtown Galena, and a fairly short drive to Chestnut Mountain. Many other reviewers have mentioned the 5:00 Wine Time, and I have to mention it as well. A couple of glasses of wine before dinner, and some pleasant conversation with Susan and the other guests, takes the edge off and is a perfect way to prepare for a lovely evening. Overall, Susan and Don made us feel taken care of, looked after, and very, very comfortable. I can't recommend Farmers' Guest House enough. The charming historic town of Galena provides a wonderful backdrop for this little Guest House. The home is located off a busier street and parking is accessed across the street which is a little unusual. We found the hosts to be very knowledgeable and helpful. They guided us aright when it came to dinner reservations. Breakfast is served for approximately an hour which may be a little daunting if you're wanting a more relaxed pace at the start of the day. However, the options were tasty and home made. The meal is served in a communal dining room which provides a great opportunity to meet other guests. We visited the house last year. Our room/suite was quite large. One of the larger rooms that I've stayed in for a bed and breakfast. However, the decor was very Victorian and included a lot of knick knacks which made it a little challenging to figure out where to put your stuff. Overall, a nice experience. read more

Galena was on my list for this fall, and I had never been to a BB before. Darling husband surprised me on my birthday and this is where we stayed. I could not have asked for a better place. The hosts are absolutely terrific. My husband planned the whole thing without letting me know and the owners(Susan and Don) helped him out throughout. Susan even had a midnight cake arranged for my husband to surprise me(THANK YOU!) and next morning I was once again surprised by very warm birthday song and a cupcake. The entire place is extremely warm and neat. The morning breakfast was very delicious fresh egg casserole with coffee, OJ, cut fruits and cinnamon rolls, absolutely yum! We had some great time with Susan and Don during wine time. Did I tell you they had WINE time (and cheese 'n' crackers)? I was promptly offered a second refill by Don. They are both very friendly and gave us a lot of suggestions about the things to see around town. This place is very unique, every room, every wall is a piece of art. Susan, Don and Charlie put a lot of effort and one can easily see and feel it. And lastly, those Farmer's Mugs are beautiful. I got my husband one and he loves it. This was my first B&B and first trip to Galena... I cannot have asked for more! Kathie and Jess were incredibly considerate and sweet, as were their staff members Charles and Carol. Farmers' Inn was clean, adorable, charming and comfortable! My husband, baby and I stayed at the cottage at the Farmer's Guest House recently. It was our first overnight trip since having our baby, and it couldn't have been better. The new owners, Don and Susan, made us feel like family. We got in late at night and they brought us some delicious scones for a snack. The next morning, they brought breakfast to our room. When the weather report called for rain, they left two big umbrellas outside our room door for us to carry while we explored downtown. The rooms are adorable and our bed was comfortable (and I'm very picky about beds). Breakfast was delicious every morning; we especially loved Susan's ham, cheese and green onion croissants. Don and Susan have kept all the great traditions from the old owners, including the bottomless cookie jar, the fridge full of water and soda, and the wine and chat hour. We've decided to make a trip to Galena an annual tradition, and we will never stay anywhere except Farmer's. read more

My husband and I stayed here for a week for our 5 year wedding anniversary (sadly almost 2 years ago now, just getting around to writing the review), and I can't say enough great things about the accommodations or the owners!! They made us feel very comfortable from the moment we arrived. We stayed in the mini cabin (forget the name) on the back of the property. It was very clean, welcoming, and private. The TV in the room was a little old, but we weren't there to sit around and watch tv so we really didn't mind it. The location was in walking distance to everything we wanted to visit in downtown Galena, but far enough away that it wasn't noisy during the day. (I'd say it might not be within walking distance for the elderly or those that don't handle stairs/inclines well.) The weather was great and because everything was so close to the B&B, during our stay we went kayaking, visited a brewery, shopped, and took a day trip over to see the film set for Field of Dreams. The breakfast provided each morning was AMAZING. My husband usually won't touch eggs benedict with a 10 foot pole and he devoured the eggs benedict prepared by the owners. The wine and cheese hour every evening was fun opportunity to mingle with the other guests and they had coffee and freshly baked cookies out around the clock. They also had a cozy little room where guests could work on puzzles, read, etc. It was super cute. Lots of crafts and knick knacks to look at. Also had movies to borrow if you wanted to watch them in your room. The Farmers' Guest house was very charming overall. During the winter holiday, my husband and I like to get away for a few days. This is the first time we chose to stay in Galena, IL and it has been our best winter break yet. We stayed in the Camelot Suite. It was a very large room with a fireplace. The bathroom had a double whirlpool that we both enjoyed using. Everything was very clean, and it felt like we were staying at a relative's home. Breakfast is plated and a different meal is served every morning. The wine and cheese hour is a great time to meet the other guests and have good conversations. It's at 6PM and the perfect time to have some wine before heading out to dinner. My husband and I stayed in Galena for a quick weekend getaway. Farmers Guest House and Don and Susan were amazing. They are very accommodating. We were a little concerned because I have a dairy and gluten intolerance and my husband has a citrus allergy. Susan was more than accommodating with these restrictions. She greeted us on our first day with gluten free cookies and had gluten free crackers for me during wine time. She made gluten free breakfast and pastries for me each morning. She bought us Neutrogena soap, rather than using the lemon soap that is routinely provided. We were incredibly impressed with her and Don's care. Breakfast was amazing - the food was delicious, the pastries were incredibly, and there were even mimosas. It was very relaxing. At 5:00 each night there is wine hour for all of the guests. This was a nice way to connect with people and hear about the town. On our first night, we were surprised to learn that we would have trouble making dinner reservations for the following evening. Susan was quick to pick up the phone and pull a few strings for us. Overall we highly, highly recommend Farmers Guest House. We have already booked our next weekend getaway here. My husband and I found Farmers' Guest House quite by accident but are so glad we did. We were scheduled to stay at a different B&B in the area, but an electrical storm had just blown through town so we were sent to Jess & Kathie's because their power was not out. The rest is history! We just enjoyed our 4th stay at Farmers Guest House and each time is better than the next. We do visit friends in Dubuque, Iowa when we come because it's so close, but otherwise we walk around town and usually watch a few movies from their great collection. What really makes it affordable is the 2 for 1 special Sunday through Thursday night. If you are a "friend" of your local public television station it is highly likely you will find Farmers Guest House in your Members Benefit booklet. Enjoy! read more

My girlfriend and I found this perfect place to getaway in Galena. Our stay was during the New Year's Eve day celebration thru New Year's day. Now during this time anything that could happen to delay and try to,ruin our getaway was happening ( plus it was my girlfriends birthday on nye) . We ran especially late to get to,the hotel to check in . Mark , Elaine, and Luke were so,understanding as in waited for us to arrive plus were so accomadating to us it was so nice and professional how they took us in. This place makes you feel refreshingly at home . The breakfast was amazing plus Mark sat with me to give me company and history on the property. Great pillows and sheets in the Charolette suite we had (which I totally recommend) very clean too. In all a absolute incredible time . Jenny and I would definitely stay here again.
