Decent pub, decent beer, a bit busy. Came here to get a pint before passing out after my wife joined me on a trip to London. The place was pretty packed, which I guess makes sense on a Friday night. While pretty common for a british pub, we had to walk all the way around the bar to figure out what all was on on top. In the end, it was all pretty much a wash except for Guinness, Beaverton neck oil, and Beaverton lunar haze. Not terribly disappointing, but not fantastic. Maybe it would be better if we came on a less busy night and/or were looking for food in addition to beer, but a somewhat meh pub from my experience. read more

Food: 10/10. Incredible. I really really enjoyed the halloumi fries. The dip that came with it was so delicious. The cheeseburger was also really yummy, and was much more fulfilling than your typical pub burger. The steak pie was my fiancé's entrée and he absolutely loved it. I have to shoutout the halloumi fries again though, they were phenomenal. If there's one thing you should get here, it's these halloumi fries!!! Service: 10/10. The right amount of attentiveness where they're there when you need them and out of sight when you don't. Not overbearing. Super friendly and welcoming. Very accommodating. We had asked to see the dessert menu, but we didn't know the kitchen had closed. The waitress let us see it anyway saying since she didn't tell us beforehand about the kitchen closing soon, they were willing to make us dessert if we wanted. We ended up not taking up the offer, but it was incredibly generous of the staff. Atmosphere: Dimly lit like any pub would be, but not too dark. Intimate setting. Music wasn't obnoxiously loud where you can't hear yourself talk. Really cozy. This place really embodied the pub culture I love so much and wish it existed in the US. Here's what I want from a British pub: pulled pints, preferably a strong selection of obscure bitters. Genuinely friendly, but hardly noticeable servers and bartenders. A solid menu of hefty bites that'll soak up those pints. No televisions, save one or two they might flip on during the World Cup. Soft cushions, dark woods, the type of place you could just snuggle into. The Washington absolutely delivered on all of these aspects (sans food, didn't try any, but it looked good coming out of the kitchen), and as a general rule for the novice, when in doubt, stick with classic beer selections. While the British did, indeed, invent the India Pale Ale, as a general rule they have no business brewing it; stick with room temperature pours that aren't bubbly and gulp like water. Bring mates. Don't be a rowdy git on your walk home. read more

Sat snuggled in the heart of picturesque Belsize Park, this beautiful pub (part of the Mitchells and Butler group) is a real North London treasure. Serving an amazing selection of beer, ales and wine within the stunning Victorian interior, the only down side to this place is that it gets EXTREMELY busy. Come Sunday, the Washington boasts some of the best roasts in London, and at around £8 a pop they're reasonable too. They do a weekly quiz, with a cash prize. The questions are very music orientated as the manager used to be a singer; If you're lucky he'll come sit with you, tell you a few stories and maybe even help you out! As if that's not enough, if you part with £1 you can play on one of the many board games there; don't be concerned that the pound you're giving goes straight into managements pocket though - it gets donated to a local playgroup so a worthy cause. Terrific service and food. The menu is varied and includes a kids selection. The pub is clean and has a classic look.

We went for a friend's party in the hidden private bar of the pub. When we walked in, it was nowhere to be seen, but was behind a set of bookshelves much like a speakeasy. The venue was very cool and hip, with plenty of space for a reasonably big party. Really liked the decor and the ambience. Food and drinks were okay. The drinks were generally good, even if not much differentiated, and the first round of nibbles (mainly deep fried vegetable) got the job done. Would consider hosting my own event too. read more

The Wash is a good solid pub. It does good food, not expensive for the area. It has a nice wine selection and decent ales, always Doombar which is excellent. I had Sunday roast and couldn't finish it all ( pretty unusual for me). They let kids in, dogs in and all are welcome. Worth the walk from Chalk Farm. read more

What a true neighbourhood pub the Washington is! The bar pretty much takes up half the real-estate, but that's okay because it is expertly carved and fully stocked. It's always a surprise when I step into this pub as there's bound to be some ecclectic mix of regulars both young and old and even a dog or two. In any case, everyone has always been so friendly! The menu may look pretty standard but the food is actually really good. I've never really seen it empty and I walk past it at least once a day! read more

Went back again on a saturday night with a friend. Place was packed and filled with trendy hep people. Got our drinks fairly quick, got some elbow space at the bar before eyeing a semi empty table. Ended up sharing a table with two other people opposite us and we all chatted together for a while. Lovely evening. It's become my friend's local and I am totally ok with that. read more

Gastro type menu with locals eating. Relaxed atmosphere with a good mixed north London crowd, a million miles away in vibe from Camden Town but half a mile in distance. read more

The Washington is a welcoming, warm, inclusive pub, its bar lined with a range of different beers and ciders on tap and staffed by friendlies. The bar itself takes centre stage. This gives a clear focus to the pub, while also dividing it into different areas. The interior itself is earthy old-school: wooden floors, panels, high-ceilings and ornate glass. I am really sad to say that my experience at The Washington last Sunday for roast was a disappointment. When I moved to London 3.5 years ago, The Washington was one of the first pubs I went to and it was immediately my favorite. The location, right by the lovely Primrose Hill, the decoration (which has changed significantly since) the ambiance and the food. It was at this pub where I had my first Sunday roast and one of the best I've had since in London. Until last week... The roast was very average. The meat wasn't as succulent, the Yorkshire pudding was less puffy and the potatoes just weren't all that edible (they were quite dry). I was quite disappointed. I hope that they restore my faith in this pub again because I do love using it as an excuse to go to Primrose Hill, but after this experience, I doubt I'll go back anytime soon. read more

Chose this pub for its great Yelp reviews and nice vegetarian selection, but at 12:45pm on a Saturday afternoon, it was pretty empty and the blonde girl at the bar never acknowledged our presence, much less welcome us with a hospitable "hello", like all the other places on England Lane do. There was only a handful of people there, all nursing their beers, none eating and one creepy guy kept staring straight at us. I thought that perhaps the bar tender was busy and would eventually take our brunch orders, but after 20 minutes, she still continued to ignore us, even though I made eye contact with her several times and approached the bar, but she continued to just put away glasses, refill beers, etc. So, we left. Later I realized that I forgot my sunglasses and went back to retrieve them from the table. The bartender was still busy, texting away, not even lifting her head to see who came in, or again, even a "hello". A complete let down and I really wanted to experience a nice, non touristy neighborhood pub during our visit. Perhaps there are other staff that makes this place great, but she earned a one star for the pub, zero if Yelp would allow it. read more

Everything you could want from a classic English pub. We arrived in time for the Tuesday night Pub Quiz (very fun, even if we American idiots failed miserably) and finished our last night in London in this beautiful space. Great choice of beers and the food was very, very good. Husband's fish and chips were perfect and my grilled veg dish was to die for. I live around the corner from this fine place, yet don't seem to get here often enough. The pub has room for four ales, yet I've only ever seen 2 on at a time. The usuals are Timothy Taylor Landlord, London Pride, and Sharp's Doom Bar - all well-kept when available. They have a nice selection of ciders as well, including Aspall's Blush - personal favourite of both the wife and myself. The food is more gastro - you have your normal burgers and fish & chips, but with the extra few ounces of quality that are lacking in most run-of-the-mill pubs. I've not had a bad meal there yet. The staff are friendly but not too much so. Good in that you don't feel like you're getting upsold, but bad in that you have to sometimes interrupt a chat in order to get a pint. Perhaps best of all, they are dog-friendly, so Figgy has gotten to enjoy the vapours from our meals and catch the odd scrap that just so happens to fall from my plate. Set in leafy north London, off on a quiet road is The Washington. A great place to go for a relaxed drink or one of those long pub meals. Set in a listed building, its interior is a mix of old (mosaic flooring, etched glass windows) and new. Find yourself a good seat, preferably in one of their booths and sit yourself with some good drink and food. You'll find such dishes as steak, fish pie and macaroni and cheese on the menu. All quite simple, but very good. The pub fills up with locals and all sorts of interesting, eccentric faces. I only wish that I had a place like this closer to where I live! read more

Nice little local pub, that attracts a steady mix of young and old. The bar space is fairly dark but welcoming, and the does take up a lot of room, but then it's the main reason you're there eh? They serve up pretty solid gastropub grub, and bonus points for the haddock being sustainably harvested. It's a pity that there isn't a beer garden where we can enjoy both a beer and the sun while our toddler plays, it would probably give the Engineer in Primrose Hill a good run for it's money. read more

My first impression when I came into this place was 'gah!'. It was just too busy for my taste. I guess that's an indication that it's doing well but I am a big user of the phrase 'victim of its own success'. It was quiz night though so maybe that is why it was quite so packed, although from the look of the advertising round the pub it looks like they do a few event nights of one kind or another. It does have a nice villagey feel mind you, particularly out on the street around the pub. The décor is quite old fashioned which doesn't seem quite in keeping with the general vibe of the establishment as it feels like quite a modern place. There were a couple of ales available. I tried a glass of Piddle first, but while it didn't taste as bad as it sounds, I preferred to go with a safe Landlord next. They also had Fruli, which is particularly nice in summer. Hmmm..maybe I could go back after checking their events calendar and avoiding a busy night. read more

I love the Washington. It's a great place to meet up with others for a drink or a meal. I've gone so many times in the past as it was easy as a meetup. Not far from either Belsize or Swiss Cottage tube stations, the Washington is on a row of lovely shops. It has a great variety of beers, wines and other drinks on offer, as well as a good menu of food. I was disappointed with the roast the last time I went, though it wasn't horrible. One of the barmaid's was overtly rude to me for no reason. She actively behaved on the aggressive side of passive aggressive. This was two years ago and I'm still upset about, I'm only writing this review to hopefully get it out of my system and move on, and to my knowledge she still works there. read more

I am updating my review from 4 stars to 2 stars. The overall vibe here has went incredibly downhill. The food is no good. You need to offer more vegetarian options and pay better attention to the food quality you are serving customers. Sad to say, this once pleasant pub has gone totally downhill recently. The new manager is rude and offensive and has managed to bar or alienate 90% of the regulars. The atmosphere is terrible amongst the staff (amazing turnover in the last few weeks), you are likely to receive short measure, the food is overpriced crap (maybe this is why they turn the lighting down so low), there is no live music and very limited seating. Quite a grand old affair in side that's had a bit of a gastro makeover, which means you might struggle to get a seat at the weekend and everyone is eating. Very pleasant pub in between Chalk Farm and Belsize Park. The house wine is a surprisingly good merlot and the roast dinners are huge. Probably not quite enough seating but there is lots of room to stand, and I guess it makes the place seem bigger! Nice decor, perfect for a drink with friends. read more

One of my favourite places to drink in Belsize Park. I've even spent a drunken new year's eve in here. The food is decent, not quite gastro, but you can eat some good hearty nosh while sipping beer with your mates. Good decor - a bit grand actually. Can get a bit busy at weekends. Massive disappointment. Is this 'pub' or a restaurant? I popped in for a pint at Sunday lunchtime (12:30) and as I went for my second I was informed by a member of staff that they would need my table (apparently someone had messed up the bookings). She never said please or any other kind of common courtesy, I was simply told and then asked to share a table with a bunch of strangers. The customer service was non existent.
