Unprofessional administration seems more interested in financial gain/turning patients in/out than helping resident that gets admitted to its SNF reach full rehabilitation potential. The aides, housekeeping staff, and nurses & most of the therapy staff are more professional than the administrative staff. However, lower level staff can only be as professional as the training and resources allow. For example, if the staff has to be in the dining room assisting residents who dine there that means without adequate staff, the patients who need the most care in their rooms will not get there calls for help answered. The hallways will be deserted. When you get that call from your loved one that they've been waiting 20 minutes for help. The administrative staff consists of a director, an executive director who did not respond to phone messages until corporate office was contacted, a Case Manager who says she's there to help however imo she's there to help the administration. Staff including Director, Case Manager, some therapy staff need training on HIPAA laws so that when a resident says they want/need family/friend to help make decision decisions, their mistaken or intentional response should not be you are competent & can make your own decisions & not act inappropriately to block family advocating for patient who objects to improper staff behavior. The director of therapy is a speech therapist although they say there's a physiatrist there was none. The billing department person did not respond to a request for a itemized list of charges that would be submitted to the insurance company. Don't expect to get any or much service if you're if you're in your room during meal . In the room my loved one was in , the call button is that is a push button at the end of the cord. It's like the end of a window blind cord with the actual button that you need to press at the bottom so difficult for the patient will know they properly pushed it . Patient doesn't know whether it's working or not and nobody is showing up .The light that indicates it's on is on the wall behind their head and that they are medically unable to turn around they will never know if by push pushing the button someone heard their call for help. Until a complaint was registered with the state, I didn't even realize that they have a intercom system where someone should be coming on and saying "can I help you? How can I help you?" imagine if there was an emergency and you're waiting 20 minutes without assurance that they heard you ? Only after addressing this concern with the agency for healthcare administration, did this system start to be used however, still it was only used when someone was staffing the nursing station to specifically answer those calls . Impossible to reach the facility doctor that automatically is assigned to see patients there. In addition to being able to address medical concerns about your loved one , it's important Important because you need to know what he's gonna say about patient's discharge if anything. During an appeal process it's best to get your own doctors to support your discharge concerns, if you feel your loved one is being told that Medicare won't pay for any further therapy or nursing. Know your rights involving right of family members to be consulted. If patient gives permission they will try to claim the HIPAA does not allow it even if the patient wants it. Make sure you get access to the electronic records portal immediately. The admissions folder does not contain information on where you can contact someone if you have a complaint or concern outside of the facility. Make sure you monitor for accuracy in patient's progress, especially in therapy . Ask for therapy notes every week because you won't find them in the patient's portal . Know your discharge rights. Lots of them are up in age, and they don't seem to have many local if any family members to advocate for them. One such lady who had no family members I could not leave her room independently was asking for her missing phone repeatedly for a week, yet it does not appear. Anyone made an attempt to locate it. The admissions package claims says facility has a physiatrist it didn't. Facility admits non Waterford apts residents from hospitals. Nursing Director put false information into patient's chart about family member. So make sure you go into the electronic record frequently and read the notes. If you try to address, legitimate concerns they will try to make you look like the problem. read more

My husband and I are so happy here at The Waterford. We are thoroughly enjoying our retirement years. We have our own 1100 sq foot 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment and enjoy Independent Living here. We recommend a couple who needed to downsize with some health issues and are in their 70's. We accompanied them on their tour and were very impressed with the quality of facilities, staff, and other residents. This is a nonprofit and well rated! They are selling their house and planning to move within a year! Anyone getting older with potential health issues who is ready to let others do the things they no longer like to do around the house should consider moving here. My mother in law has been living at the Waterford for a few years now. At first, it was great. But as soon as she needed more care, things went down hill. She is now in the health center and got sick. After nearly 2 weeks, the staff told us she is fine although she was clearly not. One staff member actually said: what do you expect, she is 100 years old". we insisted she be admitted to hospital. It turns out they were not caring for as they should and were letting her die. I'm am so angry how dare they treat patients with such disrespect. read more

This place is not worth moving to, really consider all options before making the decision. It is NOT assisted living. It is independent living with food and housekeeping services. The yearly cost goes up 7% every year, while not offering anything for it. Any other service is extra on top of high monthly payments. The food is average, a Cheney bros type food. If you order dinner delivered, sometimes it is delivered, sometimes it's not.. It's difficult to get through to speak to anyone in the dining room if you have a problem. The walkway, or bridge as they call it, that runs from the apartments in the south area to the dining room has been closed and out of commission for over a year, preventing elderly folks from easily walking over instead of circling the entire grounds. If you don't used all your food points (dollars) you are charged for the month, the Waterford keeps that money instead of refunding it to the resident! When you buy into the Waterford, you lose that buy in money. It is not refunded once 5 years passes, if you move, it's gone. And that can be upward over hundreds of thousands of dollars. The residents are complaining about many things and many are unhappy. LifeSpace has shown to be a corporate money grab. Beware. read more

I visited the Health Services area. The staff was helpful yet I find they need to improve their quality. Meal was served cold. I visited several times and every single time I was feeling sore throat and immflamation and got sick. It suggest me of poor air quality. Hope it will improve. This place is disgusting. A neighbor went there after hip surgery and was put in the memory ward due to the anesthesia. She eventually came out of that stupor. She was ignored and allowed to sit in a wet diaper for long periods of time. Her bed and the pad on the wheelchair were soaked with urine. The rooms are dark and dank. If you don't have a family member standing by all day, your loved one will be ignored. read more

My father has been held at this facility for over a month, they won't even let me speak with a doctor. Tomorrow I call Medicare and see what I can't arrange for in home care. I also have LTC contract for lots of money per day. There will be a distribution of money for related issues.. I will attempt through current cracks in the 'infrastructure' to bring down this 'retirement community' !! The staff only care about the self-sufficient, not the individuals who need assistance. So far as I can tell via a conversation with my father who is in 'bad shape,' buzzed for a nurse 3 three times while I was on the phone with him for 30 minutes. Before you purchase at The Wateford ask for written protocals on how your loved one can be moved to a level of care. They didnt exhist 2 years ago. They take thousands up front and keep it all afer a couple years. Do a survey of residents; some have threatened legal action, some are almost broke and scared to make a fuss. Be very carefull to ask the questions you would only ask if your family member is very ill, has dementia, etc. read more

My parents invested in The Waterford 20 some years ago. We did that so when they got too old to live independently they would have the healthcare center to move into. My mother, age 96 fell over 4 times, had to have an ambulance come and pick her up and take her to the hospital. after rehabbing twice in the healthcare center they sent her back to her villa and recommended we pay for an aid 8 hours a day. Despite our several phone calls, begging not to send her home (that were never returned) they released her. Within 8 hours she fell again and hurt herself. Now she is right back in the healthcare center. Waterford is negligent in their care and evaluation- and they don't communicate. What a terrible place for a vunerable, aging person. Not to mention, they wanted us to pay for a private aid- cost over 200 dollars a day. What a rip off. read more

I have lived at The Waterford for 18 months. I can attest that the facility is in great condition and will be undergoing a large building expansion in the next 3 years. The staff, most of which know all of the residents by name, is efficient and very attentive. Activities are offered for all levels of mobility without undue pressure to participate. The most pleasurable aspects of living at The Waterford are the extremely friendly residents and staff, and the opportunity to make new friends. Please note that the negative reviews are generally 5 years or older. They certainly do not reflect my experience at The Waterford. The current staff is extremely diligent in caring for the residents and offers an open door policy to resolve issues which arise. read more

The Waterford employees are 100% in my book. The people that work here, I don't know how they know my name, but there is not a person that doesn't call me by name. I cannot rave enough about the people who work here. They are unbelievable. The gardners stop to say hello to me and my dog when we are taking our morning walk. I have been here since February and love every minute. The staff during the pandemic have made me feel safe and comfortable. I can ask any employee for assistance and they always extend a helping hand. The grounds are beautiful. read more

Knowing the restrictions of COVID, i never felt worried when i arrived at The Waterford. The precautions they took at their front gate, making sure everyone answered a few questions and took their temperature. It was comforting to know they were checking everyone who came and went in their campus. All the team members seem to love their job, and are always happy and smiling. A year later. A year of even more abysmal care. My Mother has had four falls on this property with its sloping (down, to the right and to the left and all over) sidewalks. Carpets are not tacked down so that seniors who shuffle (like my Father), grab corners and fall. There is no support for seniors with Dementia or Alzheimer's, and their spouses. while touted as "not for profit" (for tax purposes) the establishment is purely profit driven. The goal is to take as much money from you as possible, while The Waterford gives you as much canned food and poor service as they can get away with. Once you are in, they will not respond to phone calls, emails or any other communication. We found out that a cleaning person pulled the fall cord immediately after my Mother and Father fell in front of their villa. No one from the Waterford showed up to help for close to 45 minutes. A construction worker sitting with my parents, along with another resident, finally called 911. You will not get the services you paid for. Now, my Father is in the Health Center as my Mother heals from hip surgery. Every week brings new struggles, including issues of over-medicating my Father, failing to see that hearing aid batteries are working, leaving my Father sitting alone in a darkened room. The bill include outrageous charges, like $50 per month for gloves that cost $6 for a box of 100. My Aunt was in this Health Center as well, and my cousins believe the lack of good care contributed to her death. Let this serve as a warning: This is a poorly managed facility with equally poor staff training. There is something very, very wrong here. The Waterford cares about profits, not residents. Almost two years ago, my father died in The Waterford Senior Center. His wedding ring was stolen off his dead body within minutes of his death while we were racing across the Waterford property to get to him. Word of Warning: Watch your jewelry at all times no matter where you live within The Waterford. There have been others. My mother continues to live in independent living at The Waterford. Last month, she received four separate but different bills for that month's charges. She paid each one in turn thinking that Accounting had made an error on each one and cancelled payment on her checks. Then she went to the front desk and asked to speak to the Accounting department so she could get the one true amount she owed and pay it.. They accountant would not come out to speak face-to-face but did get on the phone in the lobby. When she hear it was my mother, she hung up on her. I agree with a previous review that the Waterford's tax status is bogus. I don't know much about the Assisted Living side of The Waterford, but can talk about the Health Center, which is the nursing home where my grandmother has lived for about a year. It does seem like a very nice place, but there are a couple of things that have been very disturbing. One is the lack of staff. On a recent visit, there were no employees anywhere. I kept looking around, walking up and down the halls, past the nurses stations. No one was there. The old people were sitting about in wheel chairs, zonked. When I finally found someone, a male nurse, and asked him why there didn't seem to be any staff people around, he got very sniffy with me, saying employees were all in the rooms caring for people. Well, yes of course, but there should be others out watching the folks who are in the common areas. Or available, on stand by, in case any of them needs something. There was no one. But worse...My grandmother, I strongly believe, is being over-medicated. She wants to sleep all of the time. Members of my family say it's because she's old, or because she has Alzheimer's. But neither old age nor Alzheimer's cause this intense fatigue. Medication does. I believe The Waterford and many other nursing homes keep residents medicated so that they are easier to care for. Old folks are "medicated into oblivion" -- as an article in a UK paper put it. If you are reading this...Do whatever it takes to keep an older person in his or her own home, or bring them into your home. Pay someone to come in and help during the day. Put your teenagers to work cutting Grandma's grass, or helping clean her house. Call Meals on Wheels and arrange for them to deliver meals three times a day. Pay a neighbor a little bit to check up on her once a day. Figure it out. Do whatever it takes. read more

I am shocked to see such bad reviews of this place. My beloved grandmother lived the last few years of her life here, where she was very happy. She made a multitude of friends and enjoyed meeting them for dinner, for walks around the grounds, and for the plethora of activities that are planned daily. She even tried Yoga at 88 years old! She ended up having to be moved from her 1 bedroom condo into the fully assisted part of the facility, due to dementia, but even then seemed content. My entire family is local and visited often, and we were also very happy with the level of care she was receiving, the beauty of the grounds, and the food in the dinning room. I am shocked and dismayed at the negative review posted regarding this fine facility. Are we talking about the same place? My 88-year-old mother has lived at the Waterford for 2 years and we agree that these have been the best years of her life. Mom is safe, busy, surrounded by friends, and free of the worries of house maintenance, cleaning, transportation, cooking, etc. etc. etc. Staff plan multitudes of activities, parties, special events, exercise classes of all kinds, and other educational opportunities. The food is delicious and varied, and the chef is talented and engaged (he'd be running a high-end restaurant, except he wants to work at a place with family-friendly hours). Residents tend to be highly educated, hip and eager to interact with their fellow Waterfordians. Because the corporation is non-profit, money is freely spent to maintain the property, upgrade the facilities and provide a fantastic level of service to residents. Financially, it is within reach of people (like Mom) with average incomes. They helped Mom with selling her house, customizing her apartment without additional charges, moving, and becoming integrated into the community. Here's an example of why we love the Waterford so much: Mom had lived in fear through several damaging hurricanes in her 50+ years in her house. She evacuated by herself in her car several times, and had to cope with the aftermath of each (extended power outages, extensive damage to her house and trees, etc.). The Waterford has a hurricane plan in place in which all residents will be transported to safe hotels inland, if necessary. Bingo, no more worry for Mom when hurricane season arrives. In contrast to the previous reviewer, Mom and her friends find the Waterford's health services top-notch. A geriatric specialist MD has office hours right at the facility. Several of Mom's friends have spent time in the Health Center and have been extremely satisfied with their care there. Importantly, the staff of the Health Center communicate well with hospitals and other facilities when patients are transitioning to and from the Waterford's facility. The reviewer seems to think that the Waterford is a skilled nursing facility, rehab center, or dementia treatment center. It is not. It is a retirement community for active seniors, with options for increased care when a resident needs it. I have recommended the Waterford to many friends with aging parents. My siblings and I, who live far away from Mom, are grateful every day that Mom is happily settled in a nurturing, fun community. read more
