MUST READ! Where to begin? I am new to Portland and this has been my worst experience yet. I arrived to my appointment 5 minutes early with a warm welcome of a lady yelling what time my appointment was. While she had me waiting for 15 minutes she was attending a client and gossiping about other clients. When she finally attends me she starts waxing my eyebrows and DOES NOT ask how I would like my eyebrows ( she also doesn't apologize for being late) . She simply just starts waxing my eyebrows. To start, my services from the Wax Shack were almost a year ago (august 2021)...that's how long i've been thinking about what an awful experience I had there. I've finally decided its time to write a proper review to warn off others who are considering going here. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my life and was literally running out the door as soon as I paid. The woman who owns this business subjected me to her racist, conservative political views the entire time I was on her table. When someone is holding hot wax to your vagina, the only thing you can do is smile and nod. I felt trapped. She complained about having to wear a mask, told me covid is being brought over by immigrants, defended Trump as a president and had the AUDACITY to ask me if my boyfriend and I were going to having children. She must have thought I was in agreement with all the things she said (I really just tried to not respond and GTFO) because she said there aren't enough "good people" having children anymore. I'm white for reference. The wax itself was a hot mess, literally. She dripped wax everywhere and it took her well over 40 minutes to do the job because she was talking the entire time about her views. There were wax papers stuck everywhere and I was pulling them off of me after I got up. I wish I could say the wax was even worth the torture but it wasn't anything better I can get literally anywhere else. Everyone is, unfortunately, entitled to their views and political alignment. However, as a business owner, its your responsibility to make people feel welcomed, safe and comfortable. I felt none of these things. When I get a wax I want to chat about good movies i've seen recently, not how you think that democratic Portlanders are ruining your business. This is by far the best waxing shop on the planet. I have mostly been waxed by the owner Angie, and she is extremely talented, professional, and welcoming. I have been waxed a couple times by her friendly associate Maisie who is also wonderful and great at waxing. Every time I get waxed at the Wax Shack, Angie has made me feel comfortable, safe, and taken care of, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. She keeps friendly and engaging conversation, and I always enjoy talking to her. Her shop is clean, beautifully decorated, and just the right temperature. I first started getting waxed by Angie over 2 years ago and continue to come back because of the quality of the waxing services provided, the amazing staff, and the affordable prices. Waxing is an expensive service so it's important to me that the waxing be worth the cost, and the Wax Shack is phenomenal. I also really respect that Angie doesn't charge more for larger clients (some wax places do this and I find it discriminatory and disrespectful). The waxing products Angie uses are kind to my sensitive skin, and I always leave with my legs/Brazilian/underarms/lip areas feeling smooth and free of sticky wax residue. I can be sensitive to scents, but the waxing materials and the hydrating aftercare oil she uses smell nice and are not overpowering. Angie has great attention to detail and makes sure that I leave her shop happy. Also, she has a VERY generous 12 hour cancellation policy and won't charge you if you need to reschedule and call before the 12 hours. I cannot recommend Angie and her shop enough! read more

Where do I start, I really should stop trusting google reviews and come to yelp. This lady is slightly cheaper than others closers to downtown/the pearl. My mistake in trying to save some money because you'll pay in another way. The moment I walked in the room, she was aggressive and rude. For one, she hadn't even cleaned the last person's sheet off before she said several times "put your phone down" 1) as if I'm her child 2) I was very confused as to why she was speaking to a new customer like that, now I know why, because I'm black and she thought I was young. I was donating to a little black boy in the UK who had his finger amputated from bullying. When I told her that , she said "oh". I should've known then to just walk out, again not following my first mind and I paid for it. The underarm wax was fine, but she took so long trying to tell me her life story about her ex boyfriend , and was so excited to tell me about her black boyfriend and how she bought him some Jordans. Her whole conversation had racist undertones & you can just tell that she was born and raised in Oregon with no regards or understanding for the black experience. Now reading the other reviews it makes complete sense. She also was adamant on telling me a " young black girl in her 20's" wrote a review saying she was racist. I'm like hmmm you just feel guilty about that because you are!!!! She was to busy showing me pictures of her boyfriend (I truly did not care at all) that she waxed the same part of my lip THREE TIMES!! The wax was so hot and she stripped a thin layer of my skin and now I have this mark and it burns. Horrible experience. I even tipped her $10 and I regret it, she did not deserve it at all. White people like her are weird and she also got into politics and Joe Biden etc. I just can't. I had such a shocking experience at this place. I was a regular and always had a great experience every time that I went in. This last visit I was 4 minutes late, but less than a block away. The owner called me and I explained that I rode my bike over and encountered a lot of construction so I was a little late, but I would come right in. She immediately started yelling at me over the phone like she was a verbally abusive parent accosting a child. She called me names and completely disrespected me. I understand being late affects her business, but to yell at someone is a horrible and unprofessional business practice. Just to start, I accidentally booked an appointment at the Wax Shack thinking it was the Wax LOFT - which is a couple of blocks away. I had been going to the LOFT(which is great) regularly before the pandemic and was disappointed by my mistake when I realized I had to quickly run over to a different business a had never been to. This was a while ago, and I have waited to write a review until looking at yelp and realizing how many people had the same experience as me. I got into my appointment and was surprised by how unclean the space was but was already half naked and figured I would just suck it up and continue. As I was getting waxed, I was subjected to the woman's relationship drama, as she told me that her ex boyfriend was rich, and she knows she was great in bed and some astrology stuff I really don't care about. All of a sudden I realized she wasn't wearing a mask...and Covid-19 was still very much a fear. I immediately felt nervous(had even taken a risk with the appointment at all). I couldn't wait for the appointment to end while she rattled on about conspiracies and vague conservative trumpisms. The wax was rough/made me much more red than is normal and overall it was a really bad experience. I work in social services and I can't imagine what she would have said to me if I hadn't made it clear from the get go that her racist, Fox News BS wasn't welcome. I am honestly VERY torn about how to review this business. Angie, as many other reviews have stated, is VERY good at what she does. Maisie is also really good, and is lovely to boot! And the prices are the best in the Portland area. However, I must say that Angie's customer service skills are really not for me. On one occasion when I was in the waiting room, a woman who'd been waxed before me was paying her bill--and no sooner did the door shut behind than Angie turned to me and said, "man, she's a BITCH." Maybe this is supposed to establish rapport but all it does is make me wonder what you're going to say about me after I leave? She then proceeded to spend my entire wax complaining about various things including other clients/how they had wronged her by being rude, blind, etc. I don't really like idle chatter while I'm being waxed, so I was quiet, and then she asked me if I was in a bad mood, and basically tried to make me feel bad for not jumping on board with her conversation. I've also had battles with her about trying to move an appointment. No confirmation email was sent, just a text at 6pm the night before the appointment. How, when you've just reminded me as you're closing, am I still supposed to give 24 hours notice for the change? To Angie's credit, she ended up helping me move the appointment, but only after I was flagellated for essentially taking money out of her pocket. Parking is also difficult, so plan ahead if you're coming from across town. You will get a great wax, and maybe you'll click with Angie better than I do.
