Appears to be a late afternoon watering hole gathering with a few comfortable couches but mainly table seating. I have to say, after all the talking up of Glasgow mac n cheese by others, this was way better than for example Sloans, it was really nice, not too thin and creamy, properly cheesy, firm and toasted on top. This is mac n cheese like my mother used to make. The chips were chunky and crispy and there were plenty of them. My only criticism, salad, why put salad with mac n cheese, it just doesn't go, but everywhere seems to do it. I left the salad, but I was content.

It should be noted that I'm not from the UK so I don't really know what to expect for pub food in general. The fries tasted dull, old and dry. The burger contained some sad, sad lettuce and a slice of tomato. But what did it for me, was the flat piece of minced beef (??), which obviously was shaped at a factory. That in itself could be acceptable. But the very strange texture and the taste of freezer and microwave defrosting was non-acceptable. The service was however average-nice, but I'll never come back and will never recommend this place.

Started with a large field mushroom topped with haggis and local Lockerbie Cheddar. Delicious. For my main I had the steak burger which was also tasty, the highlight being the side of handmade chunky chips. You don't see those available in enough places nowadays! The landlord Chris is a friendly fella and explained to us the lengths he goes to in order to select the best locally available potatoes. A couple of pints of Black Sheep ale made the meal complete. Others in my party had the Steak Pie (I sneaked a mouthful and was glad I did. The steak was fall apart in your mouth tender). The Chicken and Leek pie was well received with a very generous filling. Portions were satisfying all round with three large slices of thick cut Ham served with egg and those chips again for the final diner in our group. Only one had dessert, which was a Pavlova polished off very quickly. It's not what you'd call a country pub really, but the food and ales are excellent and the host offers a very warm welcome. I'll no doubt make a return visit when I'm next passing.

Staff are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was nice too. We loved the lakes so much we will be going back and without a doubt will visit Captain Nelson Tavern too. To think we only picked it because we live in Portsmouth, the home of Nelson's ship HMS Victory!
