We booked a late Sunday lunch and the service and the food was excellent. The best Sunday lunch in that area by miles...well done The Folly.

My husband and I came here for dinner a few weeks ago after much anticipation. We had heard some…read moregreat things about 185 Watling but we also heard so-so things as well, so we decided to find out for ourselves. Let me just preface this with the fact that 185 Watling is probably the nicest restaurant in terms of aesthetics in Towcester. The decor is really fabulous and the energy in the restaurant is certainly bustling. There really is no competition for them, so now I understand why we had to take a 9pm reservation (we didn't book far in advance). Overall, service was great and attentive. We really enjoyed our time here but the food was just hit or miss. For a starter we decided to share the charcuterie board and to be honest, it was basically just like eating some ham slices from Tesco and some other meats. Overall it was a weak dish and typically meat dishes are enough to share - my husband and I were battling each other for the meat (literally two pieces of ham and two pieces of chorizo and then a chunk of foie gras). For the mains, they knocked it out of the park (excuse the expression, it's American for REALLY F'ING GOOD). My husband had the porterhouse steak and I had the fish special. We both were really happy with our meals and were basically licking the plate at the end. The dessert (which I can't remember if it was a special or if it has just been removed from the menu) was some weird merengue with rhubarb and it was just disappointing. It was our anniversary so they gave us a complimentary glass of Prosecco (which was very kind of them) and we were able to sit at our table and polish off a second bottle of wine without feeling rushed. I feel really bad giving them three stars and hope that next time we visit that the food has improved, because the service and the ambieance was really fantastic.

What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

We were sat upstairs near the window and it was nice and quiet there. Everything we ordered was delicious and we enjoyed our time here. Scone with cream and jam. I ordered plain scone. It was delicious. Warm fresh scone served with yummy cream and jam. I also ordered the chocolate cake tea with the scone and it was surprisingly good. Had some chocolate flavor and tasted good with milk. Hubby ordered Mac and cheese and it was served piping hot with a slice of garlic bread. Pretty good too! Kiddo ordered hot chocolate with marshmallows and a chocolate cake. The cake itself was soft and moist and not overly sweet. Went well with the tea and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate seemed standard and she seemed to like it. The place is not overly pricey for a touristy place. Service was also good and friendly.

The jam and cream were significantly superior to others I've had. There was also a wide selection of tea and some really funky and interesting ones as well! If I travel to the Cotswold again, I will surely be visiting Lucy's tearoom. The vibe was also cozy and welcoming. The service was a little slower but probably because we were seated on the second floor.
