Went here for the premiere of Michael Moore's new movie, Fahrenheit 11/9 (excellent movie, btw). Easy to find and get to from Detroit, with plentiful and free parking. No problem getting my tickets at the will-call window. Was happy that they had beer/wine for purchase. Cute old theater, comfy seats, would come back for an event, no problem. read more

Home to much of the city's cultural happenings. This is a top flight performing arts venue located smack dab in the heart of the cultural center. It boasts not only a central location, but high quality productions throughout the year, ranging from Flint Symphony Orchestra performances, ballets and musicals to plays and concerts and comedy tours. Everything from Riverdance and Macbeth to the Nutcracker, Holiday Pops and performances by rock bands, such as Pretty Reckless is at your fingertips at the Whiting. Nutcracker performances here are among some of my fondest childhood memories and I rarely miss one of its annual productions at Whiting. It's one of the city's coolest things to do at Christmas. The FSO calls Whiting home and has for many years. It rivals that of a larger symphony and is one of the city's true highlights. Whiting is truly a world-class facility, considering its size and the city in which it's located. Ticket for most events are moderately priced and they offer plenty of seating options to accommodate everyone's budget. On top of that, they offer sharply discounted rates for students and seniors, with tickets in the cheap seats (i.e. nosebleed seats) going for as low as $8. Typical seats in the orchestra for most FSO performances or Shakespeare productions run substantially higher at roughly $40 and up. Recently, the management started allowing patrons to bring their drinks into the auditorium with them to sip during the performance. I'm not sure if that is a good idea yet. We had a couple of uncouth private school students sitting in front of us during a performance of Romeo and Juliet last fall and they kept dropping their empty soda cans and water bottles throughout the evening. Their chaperone was appalled and it was clearly distraction to everyone sitting nearby. read more

A beautiful theatre perfect for a holiday concert! Came here for a Chris Isaak show (which was part Christmas show, part regular old concert) and I was certainly in the holiday spirit! The seats are comfy, it's not a huge venue so it seems every seat is a winner, and the sound was amazing. We got there early for a meet and greet (squueeeee!) so parking was super easy, the venue has a really beautiful lobby with a comfy lounge area to chill in before doors open. There isn't a lot of seating in that part but we managed to snag a table and I happily sipped on champagne until they let us in. Staff was amazingly nice, as were all our fellow concert goers. I haven't had that pleasant of an experience in YEARS. Maybe ever? Not sure if it was the Christmas spirit or everyone in Flint is just awesome but we were all a bunch of happy elves--chatting with one another and enjoying the company of strangers. My only complaint, and this keeps me from giving it a full 5 stars, is that the bar closes pretty soon after the show starts and you can't take beverages into the theatre. I'm not a huge drinker but I was happily sipping a glass of holiday champagne and when I went back for more during the show they were closing up the bar and they told me I could only drink in the lobby. I didn't want to miss any more of the show so I declined but I found it very odd. I've been to loads of theatres more historic than the Whiting and been allowed a beverage or two at my seat. So while it didn't ruin my night I did certainly lose the nice buzz I was working on! Yet still--awesome venue that I'd love to see another show at very soon. read more

I used to work as an usher for the Whiting when I was younger and I was lucky enough to catch some shows that will never be seen again, including Johnny Cash and James Brown! The Whiting is located in Flint's Cultural Center. One very interesting fact about the Cultural Center is that it is home for the Joffrey Midwest Workshop. (Joffrey is a famous and highly respected Ballet School in New York.) It is an intensive residential ballet workshop during the summer, and the final showcase is shown at the Whiting. I was able to watch one of these performances when a friend of mine was in it -- it was phenomenal and definitely got me more interested in (watching) ballet. At this stage in my life, it's still not my kind of venue. It's huge, it has a beautiful ceiling, many seats. It's a theater. I like more intimate settings with a small dance floor and a few seats at the bar. As an institution, however, the Whiting is awesome and I love it that Flint has it. They host a range of perfomances from musicals to performers like Margaret Cho and Jeff Daniels. It's a gorgeous place. I forgot I also had my high school graduation here! Believe me, the sound is excellent because when my family cheered for me (embarrassing!) it sounded like the whole room was applauding. read more

Our first experience with The Whiting. I took my mom and aunt for The "All American Christmas show" this past Saturday 11.19.16, moms birthday. Bought 3 front row seats. They were excited! We got there and found a camera man was put in our seat so they bumped us back to the 18th row. Beautiful show but very disappointed about our seats and their lack of concern. The theatre is old, some might say vintage, stale smelling. Lots of old folks. Plenty of parking. No valet. Loved the booster cushions. Worked well for my mom. Crowded restrooms. Refreshments limited. Seating not slanted well enough, struggled to see. Good sounds system. I'd give the show we saw a 4 but because of the careless, unfair way we were treated, I'm going with 2. We might give them another try as the river dancers look interesting. I'll review again then. read more

A classic place in Flint, Michigan. People lose the sight of the nice places in Flint after hearing all the bad things that go around in this area. The Whiting is definitely a place to be at when you want to see a show, musical, orchestra, dance performances etc. There are a variety of shows offered throughout the year, fit for people of all ages and all seasons. I've been here to see the Flint Symphony Orchestra, musicals, and holiday concerts. The facility is kept clean and organized. They continue to hold top notch performances throughout the years.
