Hard for me to give poor reviews but I asked for a favor after purchasing a bunch of different liquors for my holiday party. I sent two messages to their contact link on their website and got no reply. So I called and asked if I could exchange two unopened sealed items for something I would use. I get put on hold and this youngster comes back to me with some 10 day return rule which sounded totally bogus. Especially with the manner in which he presented it. It was insulting. They have my purchases on record as I buy all my wines and liquors there. But this was Mickey Mouse and handled poorly. Their communication skills suck and why have a contact widget on your site if you don't respond. Sorry. But you (wine) guys get an F. read more

So happy I found this liquor/wine store. I always buy a case of Beach House wine to give to my travelers who rent my home in Cape Cod. I did not have to order the wine in advance like the other wine/liquor store. The wine guy had 3 cases of this wine. I was impressed with what they have in stock. I wrote this review in 2013, I've been coming here for a few years now and its time for a fresh perspective. I highly recommend joining Super Saver club. (It's free) I've been contacted about Scotch tastings (???) and other great tasting events. The Bourbon, Scotch and Whiskey selections are very competitive. They have great selections compared to much smaller liquor stores that concentrate on the thoughtless "Grab a cheap bottle" and not much thought on premium liquors. Wines? It's in their name. There are so many regional selections, there is no way you'll be leaving without a good bottle of wine. I know a guy, a wine guy. If I need a good bottle of Scotch, tequila or a Pinot Noir, the wine guy will not disappoint. read more

Was blatantly hung up on multiple times for asking if an item was in stock. In store is no better workers don't even know the store and can't even help you find what your looking for. If I didn't live so close to the LI Wine Merchant, this would probably be my go to spot for wine and liquor. This place looks decievingly small from the outside front, but upon walking in one would blown away at the size and inventory The Wine Guy has. Some of the reviewers point out that they find the disbursement of the wines confusing or not aligned by "regions". Sort of the everything thrown together. This actually done on purpose as explained to me by one of the employees as I too found it a little odd. Apparently, according to store's philosphy, this encourages interaction and dialogue between their knowledgable staff and it's customers. Weather or not this is a working strategy...who knows? Wine selections and varieties are pretty good. Their hard liquor and mixer section is even better. Prices are about as competetive as "Bottle Bargains" and the like. One reason I will drive an extra mile to come here is for their own Bordeaux-style blended wine, "The Wine Guy". Priced at $5.99 this drinks like $20.00 botlle of wine..seriously smooth finish! Frequent wine and liquor tasting, so get on their mailing list and join their "Super Saver Club". Highly recommend!! read more

This place is a wine lover's dream! Wine on wine on wine!! Aisles and aisles of it, so many choices to choose from, its amazing! My boyfriend and I go here often when we're at his house. We like to choose a different wine each time to keep it interesting, and with this place, it seems like that will be possible for a long time!! The service here is pretty friendly and on weekends they usually have a table set up for tasting which is great! Disappointed with their customer service.. during the holidays I sent my daughter and her boyfriend both over 21 for a bottle of champagne. I was a regular shopper there, spent a lot of money buying cases of wine on a regular basis. To my surprise my daughter calls me to tell me the staff implied that her boyfriends ID was fake, note the iD was out of state. Granted with no proof nor experience in validating the OOS IDs they refused to sell.. the cashier/ staff was rude... who BTW looked underage herself. What's upset IF the staff is not familiar with out of state IDs then they need to post a sign .. "out of state are not acceptable" this would avoid any misunderstandings. JUST FOR THE RECORD MGR TOM, HE'S ID WAS NOT FAKE AND INFACT YOUR SO-CALLED GOOGLE SEARCH WAS TOTAL BULL. Maybe you need a course in Identifying real IDs for your entire underage looking staff! read more

Wine. I have to admit, I had high hopes for this place. The Wine Guy is well known in the area and I have heard from more than one person that this is the go-to place for all things wine related. My answer to that is: Not so much. I can be a wine snob when required, but in fact I know quite a bit about wines. I also know what I am looking for and this place just did not seem to be able to deliver. There is practically zero organization to the wines... You wander around and although there are plenty of shelves, they *seem* to run in country of origin groupings; but then you find unexpected bottles and varieties in the mix. The people working there seemingly know where things are though, which is fine if you are just looking for the basic trifecta of wines: Cab, Merlot and Pinot Grigio, but anything deeper than that is like an Easter egg hunt. I was specifically looking for some Portuguese wines, and although I know that they are hard to find outside of Mineola, NY, I did expect more than two bottles from that region- and would it kill them to at least put the two that they had maybe close to the few Spanish reds? Huh? Why would you mix them in with the California stuff? Speaking of the California stuff, that seems to be the predominate offering there. Shelf after shelf of Cali wines, great. Some Aussie stuff, the Italians and French were represented and that was about all I could find. I guess I could be thankful that the Long Island crap wasn't all over the place, but still the French & Italian sections were a joke. The other reviewers on here who claim that this is the best place for wine, simply have never been to a proper wine store. If you are looking for the basics, no problem - anything deeper, good luck. Aside from the offerings, the staff is helpful (at least in telling you what they do not carry) and the place is large and well lit. I bought a bottle just out of curiosity and headed on out. Great selection of wine and spirits, and very nice over the phone from when I called earlier to check on availability, but employees are absolute brats. I came in and bought a $130 bottle for my boss for Christmas, walked in and asked where the bottle was and they pointed me to a display case as if I could just go in and grab it. Three of them were standing at the front of the store just staring at me while I tried to get the bottle (case was clearly locked) then I finally asked "is this locked or can I just not open it?!" It was then that they had someone unlock the case for me and grab the bottle... then didn't speak a word to me during checkout. Is it just me or is this just really weird?! Simply the absolute best Prices on Wine and Liquor in Suffolk, and probably Nassau. The person that chooses their wine selection has been upping his game (I think it is the young bearded guy that always says hello to me) over the past two years or so, and I can't get out of this store without spending a couple hundred. Not good for the wallet, but the wine selection here, at ANY PRICE POINT is unbeatable. I also really enjoy the fact that they list the wine points/ratings from various different publications directly below the display bottle. You can go absolutely NUTS in this store and just MELT YOUR CREDIT CARD, but having an awesome experience both buying and drinking the wine is what this is all about. The FTR from PJ pretty much says it all, but I will add a little: Inventory-wise, this place is massive and carries a big selection. For the size, they are a little thin on LI regional wines, but they local stuff they do carry is at a fantastic price point. They really only carry the latest vintages from their global supply, so if you're looking for an '05 or an '07 but the latest vintage is '09, you'll be stuck with the '09! They have so many great values here that I don't think I've ever left this store with anything less than 4 bottles of wine. If they can find a way to wriggle in a vintner's catalog of some premium select vintages, they will get that extra star from me. read more

Great selection and prices! I've shopped at The Wine Guy several times when I'm in the area. I'm a big fan of whiskey and bourbons and I was not disappointed with their selection. The prices were also much better than I expected being that Smithtown is an upscale neighborhood. I'm not as knowledgeable on wine as I am on liquor and any time I've had a question about picking out a specific wine, the staff there are extremely helpful. Purchased two 750ml bottles of Casamigos blanco tequila recently. On sale for $35.92 each. Returned home and looked at receipt. Each was charged at $37.92. I called and they confirmed my card scanned but blamed problem on an alleged "computer glitch that happens from time to time". Told me to return for a refund of the difference. I find that to be a really poor excuse. Anyone who does not fix a "known" problem will be labeled a scammer. Next time it happens will be the last time my family does business there. read more

Quick tips: Join their "Super Saver" club (free) because they'll occasionally email you info about pretty decent sales and tasting events. Also, ASK one of the helpful employees for help finding stuff in this place; it's a big store, and (as others have mentioned) can be a bit confusing as to where stuff may be. While my tastes run more towards the hoppy-end of the alcohol spectrum, I do find myself in need of some grapey goodness from time to time. I'm an admitted dilettante concerning wine, but I do know I like Cabernet Franc (I know, it's not as complex as them thar other grapes - but I'm a simple man) and have a hard time finding it at most of the small stores around my area. Wine Guy was able to provide me with it from Raphael, as well as give me the names of a few from out in Cali that I should check out. A decent choice for wine and liquor on the North Shore. This certainly isn't an upscale boutique or wine connoisseurs dream but it will certainly do the job. With an OK variety, decent prices and convenient location The Wine Guy is a good choice to stop and stock up. Sure, they could use a lesson in organization and things aren't in their perfect place, but it's still semi-organized and you can find what you're looking for with relative ease. The wines are somewhat organized by country on the outer fringes of the store with an assortment of "values and sales" in the middle of the store. The liquor is located on one side of the store everything from Popov to Johnnie Walker Blue Label. If you're in the area it's a pretty good place to stop, but it's certainly not worth traveling out of your way for. read more

This place has unreal prices. For my favorite whiskey, they are literally 20 dollars cheaper than anywhere else around (which is like a 25% discount). Even a big chain liquor place I used to shop at in Vegas (used to live there) was 20 dollars more expensive than The Wine Guy. I will literally not shop anywhere else with a deal like that. I honestly thought they made a mistake when I asked them on the phone. They also have a huge wine collection and some good options at dirt cheap prices. With 2 for $10 including some Yellowtail bottles, it's a great place to pick up some cheap wine. The staff was helpful, although their inventory system is apparently unreliable (as someone else mentioned). The first time we went they were out of the whiskey even though the system told them there were 2 cases somewhere in the store. They searched diligently for 15 minutes, and then gave up. Make sure to CALL AHEAD and ask them to physically check the shelf if you live far away. They also have a rewards program. I'm not entirely sure what it gets you, but I'm all for a rewards program at my favorite liquor store! read more

Went in during the Holiday weekend while visiting home to pick up some things for my family. Showed the cashier and the manager (I think) my Florida ID. My ID was brought into the back to be scanned I assumed and they came to to tell me they wouldn't sell to me and needed to see a "real" ID or a passport which I personally don't think anyone carries around with them. I am 22 and have never had an issue with my ID while visiting home. The manager wouldn't even listen to me when I tried to show her any other forms I had on me. Ridiculous and rude of her to straight up ask me for a "real" ID. I understand it being from a different state but isn't that what the scanners are for ..... read more

I stopped going in Because of the young staff who have no knowledge at all and a manager or owner who saw me and did not approach me or ask me if I needed help . I finally found a young boy who basically could not answer my question and instead of looking for help simply walked away from me . The girl at the register today with the bun in her hair and a gray top had dirt under her fingernails and hands looked dirty . I felt sick ! It's a factory at best and try to sell you what they purchased most of . I would rather go to local small shop owner who is knowledgeable then this place . When the wine guy first opened you were able to find good wine at fair or attractive value. Now, it is difficult to find any real value for a nice bottle of wine. Also, I have noticed more than once that they will show an independent rating on a bottle that is not the same wine as in the rating; which often means you over-pay for the bottle that they are selling. The Owner had 3 locations(illegal in NY) and was warned regarding this and ignored them. Well they came down hard on him. My go to wine and spirits shop on Long Island. The staff are all knowledgable about their wines and spirits and happy to help you find what you're looking for in their well stocked shop. The shop is larger than many in the area and, while they stock wine and spirits at a number of price points, they are unpretentious. I appreciate that they respect that cost is a factor when I'm making my selections and they are great at recommending options at multiple price points. Yesterday, I was in picking up some Spanish wine for holiday sangria. I didn't need something too fancy, but they were happy to offer recommendations based on what I was looking for and planning to make. I've also gotten some great recommendations for better small batch bourbons and as well as gin. The shop also offers tastings from time to time. It's definitely worth joining their Super Save Club (it's free!). You'll get weekly emails advertising sales and shop events including the tastings as well as discounts on some products. read more

Since moving to Smithtown, I quickly discovered The Wine Guy. Since then it has soon become the only liquor store I frequent. They have great low prices and offer many tastings. I cannot speak on the wine selection, though it is quite vast, I am not very knowledgeable in that field. They have a pretty good selection of liquor and the prices are the lowest I have seen in a store. The floor staff are pretty knowledgeable and friendly, quickly offering advice and answering questions. The store is clean and well kept and that is a mark that management takes pride in their work. It only loses one star for lack of selection in the liquor department. They could offer more there. A few more vodkas and rums. read more
