I contacted Gene several weeks in advance of our trip and he managed to address all of our varied interests. Specifically, we were interested in learning more about the winemaking process, biodynamic wineries, and tasting bold reds and some sparkling wine. Gene put together the following schedule for us, and we could not be more thrilled. Stonestreet Winery - Pretty good, but pricey, Cabernet Sauvignon. Too bad because the tasting room staff were really knowledgeable and friendly. Lancaster Estate - Our favorite! Here Gene scheduled a private tour of the estate and wine cave (where the barrels are stored). They only make four wines (sauvignon blanc, a cuvee, a cab, and a signature bordeaux blend), all of which are absolutely impeccable. We even considered joining the wine club, but the waiting list was too long for my patience. Robert Young Estate - Good scion; also known for their chardonnay but I personally found it too buttery. Tasting room staff was kinda tipsy too... Truett Hurst - A biodynamic winery specializing in zinfandel. I especially love their 2006 Red Rooster zin, which is really spicy and unusual (think cloves and cardamom). Montemaggiore - A small (10 acre), organic, estate winery owned by a family that's recently entered the winemaking trade. Gene scheduled an hour-long private chat with the owner/winemaker, and it was a phenomenal educational experience! Highly recommended. He's most familiar with the Sonoma side of wine country (and he's very honest about that), but he was also helpful and knowledgeable during our days in Yountville and Calistoga/St Helena. He pays great attention to the group and schedule... If you're really enjoying a particular place, he'll help rearrange the schedule to allow for more time, and not rush you off to the next place. We setup an appointment through her service and she recommends a handful of them based upon your region (Sonoma/Napa/Etc). She helps setup a winery with lunch recommendations nearby or on premises. You then pick as many wineries as you want for the days you have her. We averaged 4 per day including having a nice lunch at two wineries. Brigit is very friendly and helpful when it comes to wines. She is very fun during our drive time with her. When things get a little carried away, she reigns us back in to keep our scheduled appointments. So Fun! Their shop…read moreis easy to find near the traffic circle coming into/out of the main thoroughfare not far from the main plaza. (Tip about parking.... don't park in the main "plaza" area as they have 3 hour limits and will ticket you. There are areas just off the main part of town that have free parking as well as paid parking lots. Definitely cheaper than the parking ticket we heard could be $200.) Chris set us up with bikes easily and quickly and then Shannon took us out on a lovely 15 mile-ish ride with 2 winery stops - Mounts and Mill Creek as well as a brief stop at the Dry Creek market in case you need to use the bathroom or grab a snack. (Our tour included Big John sandwiches, so we were set there. But if you wanted a sweet treat, the Dry Creek market had all kinds of goodies.) As it was a Friday morning, the roads were not super congested (thankfully) so we didn't have to deal with a lot of cars. On the way back, we encountered more cars but still not too bad. I would not want to do this on a weekend as I'm not super comfortable riding with cars zooming past. The ebikes were great and handled smoothly. I'm a newbie for the most part as this was my second time on an ebike and it was easy to use. So if you've not tried it yet, I highly recommend it. I mean..... As long as you know how to ride a normal bike that is. The helmets come with built in speakers and a microphone so you can talk to each other and listen to Shannon as she shares local tidbits. The bikes have a bag that you can put your water bottle in and your purse. And if you buy any wine at the wineries, Shannon can carry a couple bottles or Chris will go get them and bring them back to the shop. If you need to buy a travel wine box, they sell those too at the shop. As I'm traveling on Alaska, I get to check a free case of wine. Woohoo! You don't have to take a tour with them. You can just rent ebikes from them for the day if you want. But I like the tour because they know the area, the locals and you don't have to think of where to go. He gave us a quick tutorial on the e-bikes, making sure we were all up to speed and comfortable before we hit the road. Throughout the entire ride, James was constantly checking in to make sure we were doing okay, enjoying ourselves, and taking in the experience. The e-bikes were a blast to ride, but honestly, a huge part of what made the afternoon so enjoyable was the time we spent talking and getting to know James. James has an incredible wealth of knowledge about the Napa wine industry, and he was able to share so much interesting information along the way. But what really stood out was that his knowledge went far beyond wine. He was genuinely interesting to talk to, incredibly personable, and clearly someone who has a lot of experience and perspective on life. It felt less like we were simply on a guided bike tour and more like we were spending an afternoon with a great person who happened to know Napa incredibly well. We returned to Sonoma in 2026 with a small group and booked another tour. Booking and communication was a breeze. Very good. Ends up the property I rented offered a wine passport and we were to receive a discount. I called to confirm and they let me know the driver would apply the discount when we paid him the day of the tour. All sounded wonderful and was very clearly communicated. The tour in 2026 only went to 3 wineries. Two were just ok and one was not good. I don't think anyone on our tour purchased anything here. The time at each winery was like a typical tasting with some information on their winery. But no real information on Sonoma and Napa and the history of the area. At the end our driver had no clue on our discount and kept telling me he would get in trouble for charging me less. He insinuated I was making it all up. In the end he did honor the discount but seemed he did it as a favor not that it was a program that Platypus participates in. All in all I was disappointed in this wine tour and would no go on a platypus tour again and would not recommend them. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. Luckily all the people on our tour were delightful so that made for a nice day.
