We've done our neighbourhood walks many times and had been meaning to stop into The Wolf and Hound every time, but it hadn't been the right time! Well, the sun finally shone down on us several times in the past month and we've stopped a few times! This review is based off of a stroll by and decide to stop for a quick bite and a drink - NOT a sit down meal kind of thing. Well, first I'll get the BIG QUESTION out of the way...... of course they have Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. If you're not a beer fan, they have Ireland's famous Magner's as well! I thought I should answer those questions right away. They have a happy hour, and they have some cheap beers during those times that DON'T cover the Irish beers (at least not that I recall). We've had their deep friend pickles as a delightful snack - something I'd never make for myself and they are goooooooood. I can't wait to go back for a live music Sunday Irish night jam session! NOT SO HAPPY HAPPY HOUR We popped into the Wolf and Hound Irish Pub, which boasts on its website that it's "a good place to hide from the yogis" (not the smartest way to endear itself to this particular neighbourhood!) for some mid-afternoon scran. Between the two of us we ordered deep-fried pickles, poutine, "slow-roasted Angus beef yorkies with crisp onions and au jus", a side of fries and one soft drink. For $8, we got 4 slices of dill pickle (likely one pickle in total) breaded and deep-fried with ranch dip. This was the most successful item because it seemed to be freshly made and hot. At $2 a piece it was wildly overpriced. The mini poutine ($7) was disappointing. The chips were okay, but the cheese was clearly not the required "squeakers", more likely plain old mozzarella, and the gravy was oddly flavoured and unsatisfying. Half of it was left in the bowl uneaten. The so-called yorkies ($9) with so-called slow-roasted Angus beef were a joke. Straight out of the freezer via the microwave without a doubt. The two tiny yorkies were flat and tough. If they'd ever had the famous yorkie puff and lightness it was long gone. The beef was tough and lifeless. And the "au jus" - extremely salty and my guess is it was, not long ago, a powder in a packet to which hot water was added before arriving at our table in a tiny pitcher. I would honestly be embarrassed to serve that dish to anyone. The side chips ($4) were adequate. They arrived hot, at least. One soft drink ($3.25) was served in a glass with a few small ice cubes. It was not cold. At least we didn't get a can plopped down in front of us like at many places. Service: he took our order and he delivered it to our table. No inquiry how everything was, no "Would you like anything else?" No "How was everything?" when we paid. (We gave up waiting for a bill at the table and went to the bar to pay.) He seemed to be the only server in the place and there were several people at the bar, so perhaps they kept him busy. Servings were small and are perhaps mini versions of what is served at full price during non-Happy Hour. I hope so. Our total bill for a decidedly unsatisfactory repast was $33.04 with tax. The Wolf and Hound is in our neighbourhood and we wanted to give it a try. We like to avoid the chain restaurants and want to patronize local independents. Food is truly terrible, but it's pub food, you don't expect a Michelin star. I've worked my way down most of the menu hoping for a miracle, but haven't had much luck. The pot pie is edible! My friend is celiac and 100% cannot eat here so when we come for music or trivia they can only have a few drinks. The service can be hit or miss. It seems like every time they have a good staff member they end up leaving within a year. Only the not great ones stay. One of the female servers has a downright crap attitude and the super tattooed guy with the mullet is moody af and you never know if he's gonna be nice or not. BUT ... this pub is great for the music! It's also great if you just want to have a quiet pint on a rainy Vancouver day. No other pub like it left in the city so I keep coming back. Wonderful warm spacious authentic-feeling place with excellent live Irish music. We were served by a charming and helpful young woman with an Irish accent. Have been here a couple of times and wonder why we keep coming back. This place is a dive - wobbly, shitty tables, chipped paint on the walls, years of dust and filth everywhere. Ordered the corned beef hash for breakfast today. It's not actually hash (which literally means to chop into cubes) - instead, it's a pile of oily potatoes with undercooked peppers and onions, to which a bit of deli lunch meat is added. The "hollandaise" is thick and gelatinous and is obviously from a powder. Disgusting. The attached photo is the plate after I had eaten the poached eggs and few bits of lunch meat. After my previous review, the owner contacted me to advise that they had an issue in the kitchen which did not allow the cheese to melt, that they had now addressed it and also that one could order the nachos without the wonton crisps. So we decided to give The Wolf & Hound another try. Returned on a Thursday evening and it was quite busy. Ordered the nachos without the wonton crisps this time around. It was a much better product than our previous experience...all the cheese was melted and they had cheese layered between the nachos...all good. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Pub food is always a hit or miss! I'm happy to report that this is a HIT! Went in on a weekday afternoon, the place is almost empty; which is normal on a regular workday! As an Irish Pub themed waterhole, this place can be anywhere in UK, which is a compliment, it really takes you to that feeling of an old neighbourhood pub where regulars hang out and have a few drinks over a football match etc. Foodwise, this is as good as any pub can get; the thick cut Pork Chop was done just right; will the meat being juicy and cooked to perfection as the centre is just a very slight hint of pink, sauce is robust and made this a perfect match! My burger came in a Brioche, meat texture was also juicy and full of flavour, comes with side salad and with a cool pint you can almost call this Heaven on Earth! So if you want to relax and have something that reaches to your Soul, come in on a weekday, have the place to yourself and may be bring a friend or two and enjoy a lazy afternoon! Since we're still in a pandemic, this is a delivery order review. What we got was standard pub food. The fried pickles are great, fries standard, and wings just okay (good flavour but needed more sauce). It was all a little soggy, but that comes with the delivery territory. Happy to turn this into a four or five star when we can all hang out in bars again. read more

Being an Irish pub in the West end, it really has a good true pub vibe, one that doesn't feel the need to be pretentious like a lot of other Vancouver restaurants. It has an excellent, genuine pub feel! We had fried Brussels sprouts with lemon and parmesan shavings, it has a clean and simple taste. Meals included Shepherd's pie, a really big portion and for a person who dislikes potatoes, especially mashed, I had more than a few bites :) Also a beef dip with Poutine. I've got mixed feelings about the Wolf & Hound resulting from poor service on a most recent visit, but the staples of the place win out here. The interior of the pub is beautiful: bright varnished wood, upholstered seats, and a spacious layout. There are more than a dozen delightfully smooth beers on tap, including cream ales, pale ales, and stouts. The list of mix ups are enlightening: Black & Berry = Guinness and Ribenna; Black Velvet = Guiness and Champagne. I love that they have a Maritime kitchen party weekly on Friday nights and plenty of other live music throughout the week. The Wolf & Hound does a great job of being a neighborhood pub. The menu supports this with classic pub favorites. Most recently, the Sheppard's Pie hit a good spot on a rainy Vancouver night. But our waitress was forgetful: forgetting two parts of the order and our water. I don't understand why some people persist in trying to (or their managers persist in making them) remember the entire table's order. Write it down, improve your tips, and make the service better! We are visiting from the USA and found this place by accident. The food is very good and the service was great. However the best part of this experience was the atmosphere. The place is so cozy, charming and extremely inviting. If your looking for a place to just relax and kick back, this seems like a great place. They have indoor and outdoor seating and when it's nice out they open the large doors to let the outside in! Basic neighborhood pub. Nothing terribly fancy and nothing terribly bad. Just a basic pub, with an Irish theme. Came here on a Monday evening - yeah, I really know how to start my week off! =D It was kind of quiet when I was here. Not much of a wine list, since this is an Irish pub. They do have the standard Guinness beer as well as Magners Irish cider. When I walk by on the weekends, I do see a lot of students since it's close to UBC. They have daily specials that are on a chalk board at the entrance. Didn't try the food but maybe one day I'll venture to try it out. I have cravings for the Poutine with the Pulled Pork option. It's a big bowl, and the balance of flavours between the cheese and gravy are just highlighted with the pork. For non-alcoholic drinks, the Phillips Soda Works' Sparkmouth Ginger Ale is amazing. It smells of ginger and tastes better than any "manufactured" Ginger Ale. There is a large array of alcoholic drinks, it is an Irish Pub after all. My group is usually there Thursday nights when they have live music. read more

I have never written a review before but because of the appalling treatment myself, my husband and 17 of our friends received from the Wolf and Hound on December 15th 2018, I felt compelled to. Around a month before the date I made a reservation for the couch room with a large flat screen. No problem I was told and we chatted about who the Canucks were playing that night, clear that we wanted to watch the game and enjoy our get together. I confirmed the reservation the day before, again no problem, couch room; 17 people to watch the hockey game. We arrived at 6:30 and were told promptly we were bumped to another area for a larger party of 30 that were to be there at 8:00. As you can guess we were dumbfounded and very angry. The area they had for us showcases the band and not hockey. The Wolf and Hound could at least had the courtesy to call us and let us know of the change. To be told at the last minute with all our friends coming was unacceptable. The manager in charge that night could not have been more obnoxious and condescending in her approach. So fake and uncaring. I also felt the other staff members were snickering and laughing about the situation. My husband walked down to Elwood's to see if they had any room for a large party and luckily they did. Long story short, we ended up having a great night at Elwood's. The service and food there was great. The Wolf and Hound was always our go to place. A local bar we could walk to and enjoy the game and have a beer and I loved the old world atmosphere. But after our experience, I have to say we will never set foot in that place again, as well as our friends. I feel they don't deserve our business and if anyone mentions them I will be sure to share this story. read more

Coming from Montreal, where I probably had poutine almost every week, I've been trying to find my go-to poutine place. Unfortunately, this will not be it. I've never not wanted to finish a poutine until I had the poutine at The Wolf & Hound. The gravy was not poutine sauce. It tasted like the kind of packet gravy my family would make with mashed potatoes every Sunday. Only much saltier and chunkier. The cheese curds were not really true cheese curds and melted almost immediately. The fries were actually okay, but hard to eat with the overwhelming saltiness of the gravy and the thickness that surrounded it. I didn't get the textures of the curds and fries, which I love so much. The cheese was so melted, I could barely even identify it within the gravy. All I'm saying is that if you want a really good poutine and are set on it, don't come here. I'm sure the menu has some other items that are good, but the poutine was pretty awful. The dark corners, the pillows, the music, it all makes me feel like I'm somewhere else...Ireland perhaps? And with a pint or two or three in me (or a snakebite!) how can you go wrong? Fantastic atmosphere and great brew. This is what an Irish pub should be. The decor is spot on and the selection of beer is extremely wide ranging; from local micros to Irish big names. The price isn't great, but I didn't have a single drink that I didn't approve of. The menu items were also excellent. Lots of pub food, but they also have plenty of lamb dishes rounding it out. They usually have rugby or soccer (the Raptors were on when I walked in) on the two big screen TVs, but they're easy to ignore. This is definitely a place for locals. The service was way slow all night. I didn't care a great deal, but I did find myself wanting another drink occasionally without any waitstaff to be found. I sat at the bar while waiting for my friends to show up and got to witness the bartender work his trade. I was struck by how odd his pour technique seemed to be. More than once I saw him pour off what I considered a perfectly good head to try to get less of one. Seemed a little wasteful and unnecessary to me, but I also saw some simply awful pours (with WAY too much foam) come to the next table over, so it could have been worse. They get docked for the service and the price, but I'll certainly be back. read more

The wolf and hound has been a part of our Vancouver lives for 7+ years. The wait staff are super friendly and always remember us. They've hosted our birthdays, graduations and they unknowingly hosted our clandestine wedding reception. They have a good selection of local craft beers on tap to satisfy the beer connoisseur in you, and when they have live music you can count on some wild dancing taking place late into the night. Roll in on a Sunday morning for a great brunch, followed by the best late afternoon sun anywhere on Broadway. The low buildings across the street mean the patio keeps natural light longer than expected. The food is slightly better than standard Irish pub fare, with the barnyard burger being the standout. read more

This popular bar and restaurant is large and with lots of seating choices. By the fireplace? at the bar? or a table for scarfing down the grub. We chose table and scarf we did. There's so many beers on tap that our server couldn't remember them all. The fries come in a small bucket and I don't think one person could finish that bucket. C'mon, I dare ya! There are Yam fries, (although personally I just think 8 bux is waay over the top.) and I noticed that they do NOT come in a bucket. Are Yams so special? (note to self... add to Google search list.) The burger is delicious although it looked dwarfed by the bun. The Caesar salad was super yummy, and I must add this to my Gluten Free list with a special note that the aged Parmesan did not sound any alarms in my barren lactose enzymes dept. But what I always find most amusing is that you're just as likely to see a prof here drinking, as you are one of their students. Young and old, they go here. And I was really surprised to see how many parents come with kids - it is nice to see a kid-friendly establishment (but I must admit, it's also nice when the pub is loud enough to block out the sounds of kid's cries too...call me a curmudgeon). want bangers & mash that are close to what you get in England? try here. Atmosphere/Location: Looking for a British pub? Then look no further! This place is as authentic as they come. True, it has its fair share of Guinness advertisements that add to the kitschy feel of the place, but what makes it authentic is that it's a place where you will find people of all ages all drinking and celebrating life together. On (Fridays?) there's live music and people from around the neighborhood will bring their kids in to dance. At the next table, a few kids from UBC will be sharing a pitcher of beer, and sitting behind them will be an elderly couple enjoying the music. It's a fun, happy environment and you should stop by to check it out one of these days! Great place for a big group of friends to meet up as the place never seems to be short on tables and comfy seating. Food/Drink: Food is pretty standard and a bit expensive if what you're getting isn't on the daily special. Beer is the same story though a bit of a better deal, try to find out what's on special, but avoid the Lynch Lager because it's no good. They serve some Driftwood and other craft beers at liquor store prices, so I'd recommend going for them; best value you will find drink wise. Service: Always nice and willing to deal with large parties, they are also flexible iand helpful in setting up strange seating arrangements. Recommendations: Craft Beers, Special Beers, Savory French Toast (Brunch Special!), French Onion Soup. This is my go-to spot for any sort of sporting event. read more

I saw this in passing back in December 22 and book marked it for future reference. It also helped that the picture of the nachos looked awesome. I am a nacho person. Firstly this place is amazing on the nacho front as there was loads of cheese...I mean a lot of cheese! of course they charged in accordance as the bill for a large plate is $20, however, you do get what you pay for in terms of the cheese they give you. Normally there are naked nachos underneath that you use for the dip, however, all the chips had cheese!!!! There was a big coach in the back, therefore, we had and hung out on the couch as if it was our living room and watched some sports highlights (not me mostly him) and we felt comfortable hanging out. Nice place. Kind of noisy but a friendly gathering hole where things aren't ever anything but jolly. Scotch is available and pricy ($19 for a double Talisker 15?) but whatever. The beer is very reasonably priced and I approve of that. When there was a spill, the servers rushed over with towels immediately even though the place was hopping on a Friday night. We got there at 7 and left at 11:30. They didn't even hint once at us leaving. That is good considerate service. I like this place, though I'm not really a bar person. I ate before coming here but some of my friends had burgers and fries which looked nice - fresh, warm and not too oily. They have great live music too. A band with a blind fiddler was playing Irish tunes perfectly and it matched the liveliness of the joint. Superb! read more

The beer selection is pretty good. You can't go wrong with Granville Island on tap, but there's a good amount more variety if you care to look. I had heard good things about the food but I was not very impressed. I had the Guinness Steak, which is actually something like a pot pie. It tasted, well, like a pot pie. There was no Guinness to be found. My buddy had the fish and chips and reported a tentative thumbs up. There was a guy with a guitar doing fair renditions of Neil Young, Eric Clapton, etc. It was alright. All in all, a good place to knock back a few beers. read more
