The Woods. Claims the best old-fashioned in Orlando. I love drinking an old-fashioned. I order it all the time. The Woods serves up a nice one. Would I say it's the best I've had? No. The garnish is over the top and unnecessary. Points off for me. But the flavor is on point. I like that they served up a glass of water with the cocktail without asking. Service. I like that. The environment has a cozy, upscale, yet laid-back feel. Kinda felt like I was drinking in a lodge - not to be mistake for "The Lodge" next door. Ugh. I feel like I need to delete that comment now. So why so harsh? The bartender. He was a douche. He checked up on us asking how the cocktail was. I gave an honest answer. It was good. Not amazing. My apologies if he took offense. However, he left himself open to criticism. My honest criticism. So it came up that I was from Miami and his smart ass came up with "Do they even make an old-fashioned in Miami?" Why, yes they do jerk. And better than yours. Shame I had such a terrible interaction with the bartender. I really like this bar. It's a little hard to find at first, upstairs from the Lodge via a fairly nondescript doorway. Inside you will find a full bar and bartenders who know how to make a creative beverage. The menu features one drink in particular that I have ordered several times - the Gin Chicky, which includes habanero simple syrup and egg white. They also have a decent craft brew selection - last week, they hosted a Bell's takeover night, featuring many of the Michigan brewery's more unique beers. I really love the upstairs view of the streets below, it makes for some fun people-watching, especially if there is a show going on at the Social across the street. I love visiting this bar. The environment is mellow and simple. Even when it's crowded, it's not hard to have conversation. The decor is awesome if you are looking for a nice date bar. The drinks change up sometimes. I order their seasonal Hot Chocolate Mezcal. I order Pisco Sour, my favorite Peruvian drink. I love this version of the drink as a Peruvian American. The Woods... well to start off, it's a nice place to just sit and unwine (HA!) bc they do have some wine options as well. From my experience it was really easy to just seat yourselves, you can also go there in a decent sized group maybe like 10 people and sit around tables, either high top or low top. Drinks are pretty good, I had my girlfriend's drink called the lotus and I had an imperial stout. If you like Guinness I would recommend that and it's stronger! I think like 11% alcohol. read more

Got to go here for a night, and although their menu was super intimidating for someone who is not familiar with the "fancier" drinks. I asked the server for something sweet, and he recommended the Lotus, and to my surprise, I LOVED it. I ended up downtown on a second date and as we walked around, being indecisive, a small black awning showcased "The Woods". Clearly a "why not" followed and up the stairs we went! Once at the top of the stairs we were greeted by a bartender and luckily a table for 2 was open on the floor, at the window with a great view to people watch...which is a great thing to do on a Friday night in downtown Orlando! We quickly received a beer and cocktails menu, which was nothing crazy extensive or grandiose, but was decent for the scene. I ended up going with a vodka drink and nothing off the specialty menu. The drink was good, quickly served and well priced. The atmosphere was laid back...an open layout with a rustic decor including thick wood tables, a thick bar top and a liquor wall straight out of the forest. The theme of "the woods" is most certainly carried though the bar. Overall, a good place to grab a drink downtown. Will definitely return! read more

If you want to go to an "adult" bar, no not that kind of bar, but a bar with people in there 30s, this is the place for you. I know, I'm getting old, but this place is night and day compared to the sister bar, The Lodge. I have to say it is one of my new favorites in the downtown area. It is located upstairs next to the lodge. I must be getting old when I prefer a laid back smoke free environment to one with a jukebox and people shouting everywhere. With that's aid this place rocks. The bartender was very nice and they have a huge selection of speakeasy style drinks and beers on draught. The bar is beautiful and looks like a split tree trunk. Wow, from one restaurant manager to a bar manager, what a shame. This is an establishment that does not stay up to date in their state IDs, so even if you are 21+, be prepared not to be allowed in. The management is negligent and inconsiderate of guests and does not care to stay in contact with their bouncers in case you request attention of the management staff. If you get in, you may have a fine experience with good friends, but it certainly is not credit to the disappointing management staff. My childhood best friend with a state ID issued in the state of Ohio had to find a police officer to validate her ID so that she could be allowed in. How could you not have a bouncer up to date on current IDs? Pathetic. This establishment clearly does not appreciate honest clientele and all those who are wrongfully and rudely turned away will certainly agree. You'd be better off going to The Lodge where management is lovely and considerate and the music is always fantastic! read more

The Woods is a trendy place that always makes me feel like I am part of the 'crowd'... whatever that may be! I have come here a number of times for the Orlando Whiskey Society events and had a very nice time but I do get to come now and then on my own and enjoy a drink after getting my hair cut down the street. I normally visit when they first open around 5 pm or so on a Wednesday. I will order a basic Manhattan or Old Fashioned and try different Whiskeys or Ryes in the mix. They have one of the best Whiskey varieties in down. My favorite part of when I come there is that they serve bacon along with my drink. Just one slice but its a nice treat and hits the right spot. The Orlando Whiskey Society is always a good time and a great way to try many of the different brands of whiskey out there. Plus you learn lots about the brands. I always find someone to chat with and really enjoy the service from the bartenders. I have met the manager (owners?) a few times but never can remember their names. Maybe this review is more critical because it was my birthday and this place looks really rad. It is off the main drag in Downtown Orlando, above another bar, giving it an almost speakeasy feel as you climb the stairs. However, while aesthetically it looks awesome, there were some major qualms with our evening there. The menu- Hit or Miss. It is experimental (as told to us by our waitress) so maybe not all of the drinks have been approved (?). My husband ordered a bourbon cocktail and said it was fantastic and I ordered a gin cocktail and it tasted like a foot. It was awful. I made the table try it too so I could be sure it wasn't just me. When I told the waitress I would like something else she said she'd take it off of our bill (which was nice as we did not request that) but then she didn't (not nice because she offered). Service- Wrong orders....three of the girls at our table ordered a beer that was on tap. The waitress brought the same beer in bottles (already opened) to our table. We looked disappointed and asked if it wasn't on tap anymore and she said it was she just didn't see it. We were bummed and she said she'd take care of it on our bill. She did not. At that point, we shouldn't have been shocked. We ended up leaving after two drinks to go somewhere else where service was a little better. As we were leaving our waitress explained it was her third night there so that explained many of our issues. We are told that the ownership is really great and friendly and we just got the wrong server for what was supposed to be a really fun night. I've been here several times and always enjoyed their craft cocktails. The first time here I had one of their old fashions which was my first one ever. Normally when I'd try something like this, I'd gag at the taste, but not here. Now, nothing is perfect in life. But this was a pretty amazing old fashion. I've had a few of these at other places and they were watered down and lacked excitement. This evening I enjoyed a Moscow Mule. I've had these so much at other spots, but this one is my favorite so far. The ginger beer and the fresh lime juice make it worth drinking. Crisp & refreshing not goes down way too fast for me. Lol. I love this kind of spot: mood lighting with candles in lanterns on the tables, craft cocktails and a laid back atmosphere. Great spot for after dinner drinks or after work. I have been to this bar a few time now. If you're ever going out on a Saturday night it's definitely a nice peaceful escape from the craziness happening outside. I personally am a big gin drinker and if you are too they have a drink called "snowflake whispers" that is tasty and refreshing. Great service- a gentleman brought us water as soon as we sat down. I've never had a problem the few times I've gone and the drinks are always tasty. I had one drink I didn't really care for the taste of and the server switched it out with something else without any issues. I highly recommend this place for all ages. read more

This is a nice break from the obnoxious downtown Orlando, with drunken teens running amok at night. The place is intimate and mellow filled with normal 25(+) year olds. If you need to drink more than just the basic domestic drafts and in search of craft beers such as IPAs and Hefs this is the right place. Their "specialty cocktails" however are a little too off the wall for me. They infuse many herbs into their cocktails which I guess make them healthier than the normal syrup filled ones, but I could barely finish an entire glass, no matter which ones I tried. They can however make really good classic cocktails. They play acoustic music/90s rock/90s pop, geat for nostalgia. The lighting is very dim and located on the second floor, so try not to get hammered without a designated walker. read more

I don't like The Woods quite as much as The Courtesy or Hanson's but I do appreciate the amount of space The Woods has over the other two. A much better option if you have a larger group. I love The Woods because of its extensive whiskey list! My favorite is an old fashioned using Four Roses bourbon or Woodford Reserve. I once tried a drink with egg whites, amaretto (perhaps some tequila, too) and I decided never to deviate again from my norm while at The Woods. The cocktail was good but the old fashioned drinks are always outstanding. Location The Woods is located on the second floor of a building on Orange Ave. I have never tried sitting near the window to see if there is a good view or not. Atmosphere Darkly lit with wooden tables..not opulent, not pretentious. Great for coworkers, great for casual nights. The happy hour is a great deal, and they do have events often! Sometimes there is catered free food. Service Bartenders have always been friendly, knowledgeable, and very willing to answer ALL questions. I think each one has their own specially created drink. Headed here around 8pm on a Saturday evening and it was very relaxed and surprisingly not packed. Located above The Lodge (see what they did there?), this is a completely different ambiance than what is below. You walk up a set of stairs with this gorgeous tree branch above and you are immediately transported into a dark, intimate, and rustic setting. We took a seat at the bar, which is a gorgeous cut out wood with intricate details. There are also tables at each end and a nice open front area with windows to Orange Ave. There were 3 of us and we all tried a different drink. I tasted two of the signature cocktails off the monthly menu. It appears they change it out each and every month with new bevies. We were informed that they make all of their syrups and mixers in house and were testing some while we were there. I enjoyed my cocktail but I have to say, the staff was not very accommodating, especially for being as slow and well staffed for the evening. There were 2 gentlemen and 3 ladies behind the bar and we were inquiring about all different things and they were very short with us. I get it, a bar is not necessarily supposed to cater to your conversations, however, when you are asking about their business, you would think that they would like to talk about it. Just seemed like they wanted to serve us and then chat amongst themselves. I do appreciate the water upon arrival though, that was nice. With 30 plus bourbons on hand, various craft beers, and some lovely libations to choose from, you can satisfy your pallet with a nice spicy or savory drink. I will definitely be back to check out some more drinks and relax but for cocktail bars downtown, my two favs are still The Courtesy & Hanson's. Very cool vibe and easy to talk (it was great not having to shout at the person I was with) The daytime bartender was super helpful and helped me narrow down the drink for me (menu gives great accurate descriptions of tastes!). This place is tucked away up the staircase to the left of The Lodge Bar. The vibe speaks to the speakeasy era with special cocktails geared toward bourbon and whiskey drinkers. I went to see what this "Bacon Wednesdays" is all about and it is legit, my friends. On Wednesday, you get a hearty, pepper-crusted piece of bacon with each drink order. They have a great classic cocktail menu - I had The Dixie and Blood and Sand - both were great but they disappear quickly. Excellent beer list as well - I had one there I had never seen before, a Cigar City chickory beer. It's a nice size, the tables are gorgeous and made from, shocking, WOOD, but they look like a chunk that just came out of a tree. I like trees. Even when it got a little packed we could still carry on conversation without screaming at each other, which is what I like to do in my old age. I hear the menu changes frequently which is always a plus when trying new cocktails. Or chasing tail. Or on a date, as it appeared The Woods is prime for. My lady and I each had just one drink before bar hopping. Her Manhattan had a great combo of bitters and rye, while I had the Blood and Sand (top shelf scotch mixed with something, I was already 3 sheets and don't fully recall). Whatever you order the waitresses are knowledgeable and give great advise. Side note- we met a chick who designs for Scholastic books. Remember those catalogs? I thought they went dinosaur with advent of Amazon and online bookstores. Nice gal and learned something new. The bar is the place to be, but there are tables scattered throughout the bar with servers walking around. The cocktails are unique and handcrafted. The staff meets regularly in which each staff member brings in their idea for a new drink. The staff votes and the best drink moves into the rotation. Expect to always find something new. The ingredients are high quality down to the olives and cherries in each drink. Drinks will run $10-12, but they are high quality, unique, and made with love. And to be able to enjoy them downtown while still sitting at a comfortable table where it's not too loud to have conversation... That I can support! read more

Now that I am older, downtown Orlando doesn't have the same appeal to me as it once did. However, there are a few places I still like to visit. The Woods being one of them. The Woods is located above the Lodge and has a bit more of sophisticated crowd than those below. I have met up with friends here and sat at the bar, and I recently was on a date with someone and we were able to get the booth in the corner by the bar. Look for this booth if you are with someone you want to have a conversation with. It gets pretty loud in here, and the booth was a ways away from the crowd and allowed us to have a conversation. The bartenders have always been knowledgeable and friendly. They are known for their cocktails, but I always end up ordering a craft beer. They don't have a huge selection, but they do have a nice selection of different beers. read more

I came here for a work function and enjoyed my experience here. After going up a WOOD staircase, you can see the decor was as the bars name states. Woodsy, woody, whatever you wanna call it. The place was really dimly lit. Bartenders take their time with the speciality handcrafted drinks.
