Can't recommend this place highly enough. Located right on the Carthage Square, the place is beautiful. We held my father's Celebration of Life there after his funeral at Oak Hill Cemetery. We arrived somewhat early as it was raining and it wasn't completely set up yet, but Cherry and her staff moved quickly to get all ready. Great ambiance, went in at 2:30 and found everyone to be friendly and courteous. Our waitress was quick to wait on us and give us refills. My wife had the catfish platter and I had the Reuben sandwich. Food was served quickly and was hot. Sweet tea was perfect. Prices were very reasonable. Food was delicious and very large portions. Recommend to everyone. Coleslaw was very unique and delicious. Would a great addition to Reuben sandwich, maybe that is what I do next time we go. read more

I might be a KC girl but this was one of the BEST burgers I've ever shoveled into my mouth! I was headed back from a work trip and me and my boss, neither one were feeling well and neither one of us were overly hungry, so I know this is not a "she must have been really hungry" kind of review. The burger was tender and flavorful, the pulled pork was juicy and absolutely mouth watering (I can attest to this because I'm writing this a week later and am drooling on my thumbs!) How in the world have I driven past Carthage, MO so many times and never been directed to this restaurant. This is a 10 star restaurant! Their hours may make it tough to eat if hopping off the road fo a bite but if you are able to time things right you won't be disappointed. Very unique setup and immaculately clean. Very cool art and frame shop in the front of the downtown store front with restaurant in the back. They even have a great Whiskey selection in their small liquor store. Located on the Carthage Square, this hidden gem was the perfect spot to enjoy lunch. I had the fish & chips. The slaw was finely shredded and not "soupy". So, I was reeeeally close to giving this place a 5 star rating, but there was a couple of things that kept me at a 4. The EU Burger was OUTSTANDING! Such an unusual combination of flavors that I absolutely loved. The Strawberry and Pecan Salad was also great, but was extremely difficult to eat because of the size of the lettuce. Not sure why restaurants don't either tear or cut the lettuce into smaller pieces? And the Bloody Mary was very uninspiring. Not bad per se, but definitely didn't measure up to the food served . This is my favorite "go to" local restaurant for a casual Friday night (thank goodness their hours have extended again!). It's located in the back of an art gallery on the square in Carthage so you know to know what you're looking for. It has a great bar and a basic menu with just a little variety but not extensive. Probably one of the best steaks around, Cherry doesn't mess around with her quality of meat! I also love the chicken sandwich, it's ENORMOUS! The burger is also very popular and my husband loves the Reuben. It's worth calling ahead because they regularly have private events so you might wind up showing up and they are closed. read more

Place started by framing pictures. Then started selling art and opened up the restaurant when they moved to this location. People working there were very attentive and had some good conversations. Wish all restaurants had folks like that. French fries were a good pre-seasoned variety. Good cornbread. Tartar sauce was a good crunchy scallion variety. Fish batter was more of a panko style vs cornbread. Went well with the sauce. Chicken sandwich was good. A bit over cooked. Beautiful old building. Estimate 150 years old. Nicely restored floors and walls. Americana on the square. Come here to shop the square and eat here. Restaurant is in the back of the art work store. They also have a lot of great bourbons and cigars. They will pour samples of some of the more interesting flavored whiskies. Got a parking spot right in front of this local institution. Table for three for lunch (weekday) no waiting. Two chardonnays, one draft Dunkel, all icy cold. We ordered two entree Santa Fe salads and a chicken fried chicken sandwich. The salads included lots of detailed touches (grilled corn, fried avocado slices, homemade croutons), and the fried chicken was spectacular - no exaggeration. The server said it's a *fresh* chicken breast, buttermilk soak, dredged in flour, cooked at high heat until just done. Simplicity itself. After lunch, we browsed the (affiliated) general store, ended up purchasing a bottle of Wyoming Whiskey, and a Rombauer Chardonnay. Both prices were a few bucks higher than regular retail, but it was nice to have such a quality array from which to choose. read more

I had heard good things regarding this place from multiple people. I may have put higher expectations than needed, but overall I was not too impressed with the overall experience. Sure, the food is pretty good, however, I did not think it was worth the price. Most of the burgers run between $10-$12, which is pretty steep for the ingredients provided. The fries were okay, but mostly just filler. In regards to service, it was neither good nor bad. I did however enjoy the ambiance of the place as it is located behind an art gallery/store and had a good home feel! It may be tough to find though if you are not familiar with the area. Overall, decent food but probably wouldn't go back unless prices were better. read more

My wife and I stopped here as we were passing through on our way south. Read the reviews and it looked quaint and nice. We both ordered burgers and my wife ordered hers "no pink". Came out rare/medium rare at best, and mine was no better, but I ate it anyway. We are not complainers, but she couldn't eat hers, so we had to send it back. Instead of remaking it, it appeared that they laid it back on the grill on the "cut in half" edge of the burger patty to get the pink out of the middle edge and sent it back to us. I was in Carthage this weekend for an event hosted by The Woodshed. What an awesome venue and restaurant! I went in on Saturday for breakfast, the morning after the event, and had the "June Bug" pancakes. A delightful combination of fresh made pancake batter with blueberries and wait for it, .....CHEERIOS!! It was nothing short of fabulous. The only down side was listening to some hillbilly at the next table complaining about how his bacon was cooked and making it clear that he was simply disgruntled with life in general. I don't think they could have served this clown and his party anything he would have liked. But he mentioned he lived in Raymore, so I guess he needs a pass in general for his lot in life. Some people wouldn't be happy if you hung them with a new rope! The breakfast was so good I came back for lunch with local friends. I had the burger topped with cheese and pulled pork! I'm not sure who came up with that combo because it's as hard to imagine as Cheerios in your pancakes... but it was ANOTHER winner. We ended up spending a good deal of the afternoon just hanging out and enjoying a couple of adult beverages. The owner, Cherry, camesat with us and visited for far more time than I'm sure she had, along with chef and author of these concoctions, her son, Issac. The hospitality and service were first class, the food over the top great....and the price, more than reasonable. Where else can you eat, but on the way in, you're treated by walking through her other business, an art gallery? If you're doing the Route 66 tour or just passing through anywhere within driving distance, do yourself a favor; take the Carthage exit and visit The Woodshed. You absolutely will NOT regret it. First of all, what a neat little place. It's all the way in the back of an art gallery, so the walk back to the restaurant is very pretty! Anyway, I went to the Woodshed one day on my lunch and ordered a turkey melt. Service was fast and friendly (I must have beat the lunch rush, because I had my sandwich in less than 5 minutes) and the sandwich was simple, but very good. Served with steak cut fries. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for lunch or dinner! I do think they had different ours during the week, so that would be worth checking out before going. read more

Hidden behind an art gallery is a burger gem. Went to this place for lunch today and it was fantastic! The burgers were great. We each had a different kind of burger and all were very good. I loved my maple burger as it had a sweet onion maple jam on it that made it really unique. I hear they have shows on Friday nights. Would definitely be back on my next visit to Carthage. read more

This place is all-around great! The ambiance is eclectic - having and art gallery and restaurant in the same location. You can view some wonderful local artists and then stop in for a great burger and have a cold drink! The burgers might seem pricey when looking at the menu, but when you receive it, you see it is well worth the cost (hot, juicy and absolutely delicious)!!
