The Wharf Marina - Our evening ride

    The Wharf Marina

UPDATE: The marina has been rebuilt as The Wharf Marina and is now managed by Oasis. I'll start…read morewith the positives - overall, the new concrete docks are solid and float well. That alone is a huge improvement that earns one additional star. The new marina office is nice, and the mail area is well-built. I agree with Tim B. about the not-so-positives. The dock layout was not well-thought out from a boating perspective. Liveaboard boaters who had been at Gangplank Marina for decades provided input on how the layout should be configured to ensure access to boats from land and for vehicles for delivery of large items necessary for boats and for repairs. This was ignored. We also suggested pilings to aid with docking throughout the marina. Pilings were only installed on Z dock and not installed on all other docks (we assume as a cost-cutting measure), meaning that docking in wind in double-loaded slips creates an added challenge. The facilities are new, which is fantastic, but they are not set up to serve boaters well. Laundry facilities are extremely expensive ($3.00+ per load). Bathroom facilities are not practical (shaving, washing your face, or brushing teeth with an automatic sensor faucet doesn't work well). Shower facilities drain poorly and shower heads seem cheap. Lights are too dim and do not work at all in changing room currently (has been reported numerous times over the past year). As an over 15-year liveaboard boater in the area, I wouldn't mind any of these things. However, the proposed price increases per foot for 2023 don't make sense. The 2023 slip rates and fees put the cost of living at the marina over twice as high all other marina in DC, including Navy Yard and much higher than Capital Yacht Club, the private member club also located at The Wharf. The level of service also doesn't justify the prices. I want Wharf Marina to be a world class marina. There is still much work to be done to get there. If the 2023 prices remain, I'll be looking at other marinas shortly.

From the water it's an absolutely beautiful approach and the docks are brand new…read more Once on land though, it's an absolute nightmare to access your boat and/or ground transportation. The only parking lot is the underground lot for the Wharf which cost you $45 for a half day. There are no carts available and we couldn't seem to figure out where to pay for and get ice. For a "world-class marina" they do very little to help out actual boaters. Buy some carts. Get a launch boat for those tied to moorings. Figure out the parking situation.

It's been an excellent experience. Notably, their team has been easy to work with--consistently responsive, knowledgeable, and transparent about pricing. They tackled our "to do" list of maintenance that we had put off until the winter and kept us in the loop on their progress at each step.

Our past month and a half at the marina have only reinforced our original impressions. The marina is clean and well maintained. Shore power and water are provided at each slip - the only gripe I have here is that there are no "dock boxes" for storing equipment and cleaning supplies for your boat. The amenities are great - there is a restaurant, marina store, showers, bathrooms, and even, event space available for rent. The marina offers full-service repair and maintenance, has a boat lift, and a launch ramp. There is no on-site storage for long term storage of trailers or boats "on hard" - but that's par for the course at many places in NoVA. The staff deserve special mention. Every person I have dealt with has been pleasant, helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile to help with any issue - whether it is scheduling and repairs or just coming down to help with docking and fueling. Restaurant service is a bit slow - but that's a different review! The boating community at the marina is also great. Very friendly folks, many who have been there for years. On any given night there are many boaters and friends, hanging out on their boats or grilling and hanging out in the pavilion which offers free grills, picnic tables, and outdoor televisions for use by slip holders. There is even a monthly "social" event provided by the marina with hot dogs and hamburgers. Overall, Occoquan is a bit pricier than some other marinas in the area, but the amenities and services justify the cost. I expect that we will be keeping our boat there for many seasons.
