We have eaten in or taken out food from the Yellow Carrot for at least three years. Tonight, went to Yellow Carrot with three visitors to Durango. The entire experience was horrible. We wanted to order the Fish and Chips ($33) so the seven year old in the party could have some of it without the accompanying sauce. But the general manager insisted that the sauce simply could not be served on the side. The chef forbids it. We ordered it anyway, hoping the fish would still serve its purpose. But when it came it was extremely over cooked and could barely be eaten. Another person in our party ordered the tofu curry, This arrived in the form of two tiny cubes of tofu -- about 1/2 inch in each dimension -- with a few drops of sauce. No rice. About two very small bites. Another dish, the alleged Portobello Mushroom Lasagna (with artichokes), arrived with one small Portobello Muchroom, four little leaves of artichoke, all swimming in a strange green sauce. When I asked the manager where the pasta was, his response was that I obviously had not read the part of the menu that said "no noodles." His whole tone throughout was that it was outrageous not to accept with thanks whatever the chef and he had come up with. No apology. No offer of any substitute dish. Just supercilious nastiness. Overall, one of the worst eating experiences we have had in many decades. This combination of nasty attitude and meagre and poor food must explain why (in contrast to the past) the restaurant was nearly empty on a Friday night. read more

$3.50 extra for gluten-free bread... I've never seen anything this expensive, and I live in Boulder... I've been to multiple restaurants that serve homemade GF bread and have never seen more than $1.50 up-charge. I may have let this go this was a spectacular, holds-together GF delight, but alas it was not. It was as if someone had altered a recipe for a cheddar cheese scone (tastes oddly like this) to be gluten free and called it sandwich bread. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which seemed like a safe option. Boy was I wrong. The 'pulled pork' was somehow dry and tough like shredded jerky even though it was soaked it some kind of tamari or soy sauce to the point of not tasting anything but too much salt. I will start by saying I was very nervous about taking my party of 13, including 5 grandchildren ranging from 2 to 7 years of age, out to a sit down dinner. The experience was delightful! The restaurant was open and pleasant, the service was exceptional. Starters were brought out within 5 minutes of seating. Portions were large. The dinners were brought out in a very timely manner. Food was remarkable. Even my most critical eaters were very positive of all the food. Notably the Brussels Sprouts, Surf and Turf, Scallops, Tomato Bisque, Macaroni and Cheese were commented as DELICIOUS! The children were allowed to stand and walk around the pastry window admiring all the cupcakes....which really allowed the adults to relax a bit more. Everyone was very accommodating. This place you can tell has lots of fun character and can tell right when you first walk in. Monday night is burger night there and they had interesting & awesome burgers you won't get from any other place which is eye catching. I ordered the smash burger & was disappointing to find it honestly not even medium rare. It was raw and the middle of it was spongy as I had other adults testify to that as well. The waiter offered to remake but honestly it sort of ruined my appetite because I've had bad experience with raw meat in the past. We get the check and they didn't even offer to take it off the bill. I've been in customer service for many years and for a place like this you would think they would offer that as there food came raw. But other than that good environment!! read more

We stopped in around lunchtime to get a birthday dessert for the brother. The cupcake varieties were amazing and each looked delicious and made with care. The food and experience was quite good. What killed it for me was at the end of a pricey meal they add 3% for using a credit card regardless if you offered it as a debit. Who brings cash to a pricey restaurant?! Then when when we're leaving, no thank you or have a nice night. Just grabbing the bucks and tips at high prices. Overheard extra fees added for a neighboring guest asking for a to-go order with their meal. I bet it doesn't last long. I ordered the dish that had been the reason for making me want to come back for weeks!...it was NOT anywhere near as good, nor the same as before. When I inquired as to why I was told "well maybe they just left some things out today bc it is busy in the kitchen". No offer to fix it or make it up in any way whatsoever. Long review ahead, but please read it if you are considering the Yellow Carrot for your wedding or special event: My husband and I hired the Yellow Carrot to cater our wedding in Telluride. We didn't have a planner, so the fact that they could handle our food, bar, flowers/decor, cakes, and rentals all together was a major selling point for us. Unfortunately, the lack of organization or attention to detail really caused certain aspects of our event to suffer. The planning process felt terribly flustered from the start. Sari (the owner) is a fast, super bubbly talker and always seemed to rush me off the phone when we spoke, constantly assuring me that "everything will be so awesome, you'll love it!" without really giving me any details. It was my job to catch her errors as we updated our contract (example: at one point she changed the guest count from 60 to 45 by mistake, so I had to have her fix it - but the correction was only reflected on the food, not the tables/seating, so I had to have her fix that, too, then the amount of table decorations, etc). I never really felt "heard" throughout the process - she just has her way of doing things and that's how it's going to be done. I had no idea what my flowers or cake were even going to look like until I arrived at my wedding - all I knew is that they would be "so awesome." Thankfully, they were beautiful, but my bridesmaids' bouquets were MUCH smaller than I anticipated for the cost, and she forgot a groomsman's boutonniere. Our guests commented on how delicious the food was and how gorgeous the decor looked, so we're grateful for that! But there were still several issues that really put a damper on the event for us. For starters, we wanted a champagne bar available to our guests before the ceremony. Sari ran with it, told us she would bring an "awesome" basil (green) lemonade option for the non-drinkers and "everyone would love it." We provided the champagne, but instead of giving guests a choice of champagne or lemonade, the staff was mixing them together - very odd, and not at all what I had in mind. A few of our close friends commented on it ("what was that toxic waste green champagne you were handing out?") And that was everyone's first impression upon arriving to our wedding! Other little issues included dinner service ending much earlier than expected (they packed it up because Sari had to leave early, even though there was TONS of food left - which I assume ended up in the trash), there weren't any cake cutting utensils as promised, etc. One little girl's night was ruined because we'd planned (and paid for) a special allergy-friendly meal for her, which was cross-contaminated and completely inedible. We also paid for a few gluten-free, dairy-free cupcakes specifically for the same girl, and they were never put out at all. We found them in the venue's refrigerator the next day. Because we technically only had the venue rented for one day, our arrangement was for the staff to clean up that night, leaving only their tables and chairs to be picked up the next morning. Instead, the staff just stood around for the rest of the reception (after Sari left), with seemingly nothing to do, and left at the same time we did. None of that cleanup had been done. Thankfully they took care of it the next morning and it wasn't an issue with the venue, but a week later, I received an email from Sari saying that we owed an additional $800 for her staff's extra time the day after the wedding. I asked Sari to call me before charging my card so we could chat about the above issues, and I instead got a call from a member of her staff asking if she could charge my card. So, I just decided to pay it and sent Sari an email explaining why I had a sour taste in my mouth, and again, I got a canned response from a member of the staff. I asked to make sure that my note reached Sari, and Sari later responded WORD FOR WORD the exact same email I'd just gotten from her staff member: "We would love to extend our gratitude of your payment and gratuity to our awesome staff, who loved so much being a part of your event, blah blah blah." Word for word. There was no acknowledgement of my complaints. It was obvious that she had my money and she was done with me. I just felt very unimportant and unappreciated - not how you want to feel after paying someone a huge chunk of your savings! I will never be hiring Sari or the Yellow Carrot ever again. read more

My husband and I chose The Yellow Carrot to cater our wedding on June 22, 2013 at Blue Lake Ranch's Ridgewood Event Center. The experience with Sari and her staff was amazing. They offered us a phenomenal tasting well in advance of our event we were able to try multiple apps, entree and side items from their catering menu to help make our own menu decisions. They offered unique items such as a chip and popcorn bar for our cocktail hour and a macaroni and grits bar for our dinner service. They responded to emails within a day and responses were thorough. When our baker fell through, The Yellow Carrot was more than willing to help us create an amazing wedding cake at the last minute. The day of their service was flawless. They arrived and set up with ample time for my photographer to get pictures well before guests arrived for our ceremony. The staff was courteous and efficient. The food was AMAZING! We've had almost all of our guests tell us this was the best wedding food they'd ever had. The Yellow Carrot completely designed all the buffets themselves - they truly understood our concept because everything they did matched flawlessly with the rest of the event even though we didn't see any of their designs ahead of time. Their prices were comparable to other caterers in the area, but I really feel their service, food and creative design were superior to anyone else we could have hired. At the end of the day, my rating is a reflection of the entire experience my husband and I had from the moment we signed the contract and the feedback we've received from all of our guests. This restaurant is not located where you can find it easily. I wonder if they will survive, because they seem to care little about their customers and more about being "AWESOME". As locals, we have visited The Yellow Carrot several times for lunch and once for Brunch. The first thing you notice is the cool decor. It truly is a very attractive place. When you get a menu you notice that everything is very overpriced, including the split charge. One of our party asked the owner who was waiting tables that day for some hot sauce. She offered him some "special, made by me personally and awesome " (of course ) hot sauce. When the check came there was an overpriced charge for that hot sauce...which was never mentioned when she sold him on it. He did not complain, but that was it for him-he will never go back. The salmon salad was mostly lettuce with very little salmon in it. The Cuban sandwich is different every time you order it. it's like no other Cuban sandwich you've ever seen. The only consistent thing about the Cuban is that we take half home and eat it as leftovers-twice! It looks like a hot mess on the plate and it definitely requires a knife and fork. The Italian chicken salad wasn't anything special. The fries are delicious-I agree about that. But they are also way over priced. The Monday "specially priced burger" is $12. Oh, you want fries with that? If you want fries they are an additional $8. So really, this is a $20 burger and fries. Some folks really like the way the owner bustles around, chatting and posturing as she intrudes on your meal. I do not. I am put off by her oversized personality and breathe a sigh of relief if she is not there when I go in. The waitstaff has been excellent every time. But the owner and everyone else spend so much time displaying their "awesome" personalities, we feel like we've been watching a performance of some kind.....and we've paid a big price for it. The Brunch menu was so weird that none of us could find anything to eat. We ordered from the lunch menu. Don't expect anything resembling Brunch food if you go for Brunch. When we left last time, we all agreed that every time we come out of this restaurant we feel like we have been taken advantage of. The whole experience is A BIT MUCH. There are so many more enjoyable dining experiences offering a better value in Durango. We have finally given up on The Carrot. We just can't justify ever going back. read more

Heard good reviews so we ventured in on a Monday mid afternoon. Unfortunately, we cannot comment on the food (very expensive food). It was a beautiful day outside and preferred to sit at an outside table, although it's nothing special, views of the parked cars and noisy highway. Nope, not serving outside even though no patrons were dining inside, it was a slow time. After perusing the menu, our waiter explained that there were no changes or substitutions for any of the menu selections... so you cannot get a burger without cheese?? My husband doesn't like cheese, and we are not vegan or vegetarian or dairy free. So our waiter only suggested the vegan side of the menu and raved about every item that we were not interested in. We cannot comment on the food since we decided it wasn't the place for us. Far too many places for excellent food choices in Durango, go to James Ranch for burgers any way you want them!! read more

I used to be a huge fan of The Yellow Carrot before they opened their new location. I would bring friends and family visiting from out of town cause I knew it would always be a hit! I don't think they were prepared for opening a restaurant alongside the catering business. Staff seems inexperienced and frazzled, as well as unwelcoming. Sari is still sweet and helpful but she can't do it on her own. I work for a business that relies on Yellow Carrot to provide boxed lunches for customers, and they arrive hurriedly put-together, often soggy and with wilted greens. Not only have WE noticed the lack of quality, our clients have as well. I would love to support the Yellow Carrot again so I hope they turn it around. The restaurant needs serious work or it will fail. Also disappointing reading other reviews saying that they will not remove individual items (cheese, sauces, etc) from menu items. We have had macaroni and cheese, curried cauliflower, glazed carrots, mashed potatoes, Moroccan lamb chops, chipotle chicken, and the best-ever (and that is saying a lot) shepherds pie. With advance notice, We can order special dishes that are tailored to avoid my food allergens. Each dish ordered is plenty for the two of us for dinner and at least a meal or two of leftovers that give leftovers a whole new great meaning. We got a dark chocolate and peanut butter dessert that we savored for a couple of days. It was huge and scrumptious. I really encourage everyone to try the take-and-bake meals right now. A great find! Unlike restaurants in downtown Durango, it has plenty of parking. The ambiance casual but nice, with the added benefit of a beautiful display of pastries. The food was exceptional from beginning to end. We had a party of 13 people, and everybody was very happy with their meal, even those of us with the highest expectations. The bronuts seem to be an invention of their own, a savory donut that comes with a garlic dipping sauce. It was worth every single calorie. We also started with the brussels sprouts, which come in three ways. The brussels sprouts were a great starter, but for me a little bit soft. The surf and turf entrée was one of the best ones we've seen. The steak was incredibly tender and cooked to perfection, and the scallops were also done perfectly. Two people at our table ordered this option, and both of them were incredibly impressed. I ordered the buttered sea scallops, and couldn't have been happier. It was served over squid ink pasta with farm fresh vegetables. My daughter ordered the Thai coconut impossible meatballs. The curry sauce was delicious, and the vegetables were very fresh. The meatballs were a little bit dry. Two people at our table ordered their creamy twist on Bolognese. We thought it was very delicious, but honestly by then I was so full I could only try a couple bites. It's rich, and in my opinion it could serve four people if you ordered appetizers with it. I didn't try the tomato bisque, but the people who did said it was the best one they've ever had. We ordered mac & cheese for some of the little kids. It was, again, delicious and very rich. One order was enough for four children easily. We all wish we could've seen photos of the food before ordering, so we took some photos so you guys can all get an idea of what to expect. I love pie. My wife, knowing that I love pie ordered a coconut cream pie from here for my birthday. It was not good! It was as if someone who had never made a pie before made this one. The crust was one that would have paired well with a fresh fruit pie, it was 3/4 inches thick, hard as a rock, and completely absent of taste - I literally thought I chipped a tooth when I bite into it. Cutting it was an act of God, I think Moses parted the Red Sea easier than I cut a slice of this pie. Then comes to the filling, now they call it coconut cream because there is supposed to be cream in it. In this, there was none. It was actually like someone had taken cornstarch and water and dumped an entire pound of coconut shreds in and then drop it into a rockhard piecrust. Needless to say, I didn't get through one piece and the whole $50 pie went in the garbage. Please don't reward this company by going to their store and buying something. This business should fail and feel bad for swindling their customers! read more

I have very mixed feeling on this place... I had a cupcake hankering and decided to give the Yellow Carrot a try. I was ASTOUNDED by the cupcake case when I walked in - the flavor selection and staggering size/height is enough to make you gasp! I ordered a Samoa Islander and E the Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake. All of the Carrot's cupcakes are filled in the middle, and E's had a delicious velvety lemon-blueberry cheesecake well in the middle. Mine, which was supposed to taste like a Girl Scout Samoa, I assume, but really didn't, had a gooey coconut mix in the middle which had soaked/baked into the surrounding cupcake so much that it was hard to tell what was filling. Another problem with my cupcake was that the frosting was rock hard, like it was a day old. E's was soft and creamy and perfect. I guess he got a freshly baked one... I was a little surprised by their prices...$6 is steep for any cupcake, regardless of the height of the frosting and decoration. They had $9-11 sandwiches and salads, and a delicious-sounding selection of take-and-bake meals that, sadly, I could probably make at home for cheaper. The housemade beet and sweet potato chips were a little plastic-y tasting, but the salsa verde that E took home was yummy, with a perfect amount of heat and kick. The Basil Limeade was to die for, but at $12 for a Mason jar, it's not something I'm willing to splurge on. I really want to like the Yellow Carrot, and I really think they have the potential to be awesome. But tone down those prices...it's Durango, for pete's sake! read more

Writting this review is difficult, mainly because I can't think where to start because it is all so unbelievably amazing. I have yet to taste or see something that comes out of that kitchen that isn't the definition of unique and delicious with the levels of creativity one would only find in a 5 diamond high end place. I am in the F&B/hospitality industry and have yet to work with a chef who is as talented as Sari... A few of my favorites... well for starters all of her cakes, I mean the style and decor' is untouchable, and they actually taste as good as they look. How many of you have been to a wedding with a gorgeous cake and then you bite into it and it is flavorless and dry? This is not the case with The Yellow Carrot. The most unique flavors and decorating you will ever enjoy! Just grab a cupcake when you are around and you will see. Chocolate macaroons- nothing beats these, every time I'm in town I must have them. Basil Limeaid is a signature along with beet and sweet potato chips that display the perfect sweet/salty flavors. As far as the take and bake goes- Shrimp and Grits, shepards pie, mac n cheese, lasagna with a TO DIE FOR SAUCE, including the green chilie lasagna (which I haven't seen in a while)! My absolute favorite still remains to be the pot pies, veggie or chicken! She has such a perfect spin on soul food! I also love the great selection of gluten free items, I'm not gluten free but when I travel to visit friends, many of them are gluten free and we are able to accomodate everyone when we stop in there! And I have tried a few gluten free items, and the flavor is never compromised by a dietary need. On top of everything she offers in the shop, I have had the pleasure of enjoying many events that she has catered in town... Not only is the presentation a work of art all of the food I have had is fresh and combined in a way that will knock your socks off. The food pairing she has are stellar and you will never find them anywhere else! Ate lunch at their new location. The interior was very nice and lots more seating than before, unfortunately that's where the compliments stop. You aren't allowed to make substitutions or changes to menu items (I.e. no cheese) the service was unapologetic when my order came out a salad and not a sandwich. The salad was then dumped on a plate with two pieces of bread, all taking too long to fix because "the cook had to step out." Some girlfriends and I went out for apps and drinks to this establishment on a Saturday night. Our server accidentally brought us a wrong app and when we addressed it he owned his mistake and appropriately offered us the item we ordered. We said "yes please " and he left the mistaken item on the table while we waited for the correct item. The owner brought our correct item and took the barely touched mistaken item from our table. At the end of our meal the waiter apologized and said the owner said he had to charge us for both items ..we all.thought that was inappropriate. Why should we pay for something we did not order or eat?. Had we known we were paying for it, we would have taken it home with us. Again, yellow carrot, not a customer centered business practice. $81 - take and bake We got the small pans of veggie lasagna, mac and cheese, and one brownie. While it was a lot of food (enough for 2-dinners and left-overs) it seemed massively expensive. And I could overlook that if it was spectacular but it was SALTY. Every bite was salty both dinners ...I'm not sure what the spice blend is but I couldn't finish either of my meals because of the saltness. The brownie was good but more like a light fluffy cake than a brownie. I've had their lemonades and beet chips and they are great but this was disappointing, expensive, and salty.
