Don't go if they're expecting to be busy. Understaffed and overwhelmed business during the weekend brunch hours. Waited forever, and the brunch menu takes a very refined taste- definitely not for the kids. I'm sure the regular menu on a normal day is terrific, but the brunch can't be everyone's cup of tea. The food wasn't bad, it was ok, but as a person born from an Eastern culture, European tastes are just too exotic for me, as my culture is for them. The service was great and our server was a hunk with amazing blonde hair. The drinks were phenomenal and it wasn't too long of a waiting time. The problem then came when they did start bringing in the food. The starters were doused in so much oil, the government was filing a warrant to harvest it. There was also only 2 servers, the hunk and the other server, it'd be rather sad if they had more customers. Not only was everything oily, the spices were not nose-friendly, maybe it's just on the first time.. I hope. I mean, I think they served us the entire harvest if Italy's rosemary and spices. Now these are just minor inconviences, nothing too bad. I probably could've eaten 30% if 1.) I didn't eat snacks before coming in and 2.) If the portion size didn't make Jesus' bread and fish look like a kindergarten's snack time. We, of course, realized that finishing rations for the winter was not possible to be gobbled down in an hour and a half. The prices were also higher than the Rockies, and it seems like it's only that high because the portion size could feed the African continent. So, naturally, we told them we wanted takeout, because the food was, again, fine. I also didn't understand what the theme was-- European archtecture with a traditional Italian layout, Spanish music and a Mediterranean menu-- which would've been ok if the next part didn't happen. After we got our things and upped and left, Ms. Other server comes rushing out, knocking on our car window and said the following line, "Was everything ok? You tipped $7... and that kind of stings. That doesn't really pay the bills. Usually it's a 15% or 20% tip. This is like split for 10 people." First of all, we aren't even required to tip you a certain amount. Remember that. We also understand servers make most of their money on tips, but if you're business is centralized on tips, that's not US making your income hard to deal with. Second, don't make us feel like assholes just because we didn't want to give you a higher tip amount after giving us food that we didn't enjoy and portion sizes that intimidates even the most obese. Seriously, I thought they brang me a bowl to wash my face with. And lastly, we paid almost $300. $300 for food unenjoyed, served with the Western hemisphere's entire stock of pasta and cheese. We found this place literally driving on the highway. And it was a GEM of a place!! Customers who have food allergies do not go to this restaurant. My adolescent grandson has severe food allergies to eggs that are not fully cooked and ALL NUTS EXCEPT PEANUTS. This information was given clearly to the owner/ server that we had.The egg issue was resolved by ordering well cooked pancakes. As an aside as she described the "awesome" pancakes she added with enthusiasm, that they were made with ALMOND FLOUR! Are almonds not nuts and had we not just told her that he was allergic to ALL nuts except peanuts? it would not have been so "Awesome" to have someone have an anaphylactic reaction in her restaurant due to lack of responsibility on her part. My suggestion to her that her menu needed to have every item labeled with NUTS if they contained them and her answer was outstandingly defensive and it was clear she was uninterested and said it was not necessary. If you have any food allergies I would suggest that you go elsewhere for your meal. read more

I absolutely LOVE this restaurant from the first day I walked into their new location. I'm always excited to take friends and family to this place and know they will enjoy it's unique menu and festive atmosphere. Love that they have so many yummy options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and you can't forget about the homemade desserts selection!) Another thing I love and have commented on numerous of times is the presence of the owner at the location every time I've been there. I've worked in the service industry for many years and it's wonderful to see a passionate owner who cares about the quality of the food, the service, and meeting each customer. Just awful in every respect. For starters, both waitresses were new and totally untrained. Wife and I ordered two different dinners. What was supposed to be beef stroganoff was a nearly raw piece of beef in a bowl of gravy with some mashed potatoes. My wife couldn't chew it and gave it to me to try. I couldn't eat it either and gave her my fish and chips. The fries were cold and sent those back. The fish was fine. When the owner came bye I told her that the stroganoff couldn't be eaten and she offered a replacement meal. Figured another fish order would be the safest best and she said it would only take a few minutes. A while later they were clearing the plates from the other two couples at the table and she said the fish would be out shortly. I told her that everyone else was done and that I no longer wanted to start another meal when everyone else was ready to leave. She insisted that it would only be a few more minutes and I said no thanks again. She then became hostile and said she was doing all she could and said she would package the meal to go and that I would have to pay for it. We paid for both meals, left the packaged one on the table and left. You won't want to dine here and be subject to overpriced, poorly prepared meals and an extremely rude host. Other meals at our table also had issues and I doubt that any of us will ever return. read more

Allow me to preface this review by saying I just walked through the door to my home. This is my first food review I've ever written. This is how compelled I was by the sandwich/baked goods I just experienced. Preface over. The story begins with me and my culinary partner driving through downtown Durango, stomachs a-rumblin', brainstorming the location of our impending ingestion. We've been staying in Durango for about a month, and we agreed to finally go to the Yellow Carrot, which actually sits right around the corner from us. I just...don't understand...why we didn't go sooner. Can you tell this is a positive review yet? Okay. Enough of that. Immediately upon entry you are delighted by the pleasant and bright ambience that exudes from the storefront, all the way to the back of the kitchen, the latter of which can be fully observed, and fully respected. From the action in the kitchen, to the personalities of the staff, to the diverse selection of all foods, you can easily see that everything here is made with great passion, and great creativity. My sandwich was phenomenal (I got the Pimped Out Turkey: roasted turkey, cherry habanero chutney, walnut pesto, and brie). Every ingredient of this intelligently crafted sandwich was very fresh...but it was the melding of all the elements that put it over the top. The turkey was hot and juicy. The sweetness of the chutney provides a perfect counterpoint, which is followed shortly by the awesome kick of the habanero. The heat was more than I thought- which I totally dug. Not overwhelming; just enough to keep you on your toes. But then, the heat is cut out by the herb imbued, earthy, creamy hybrid created by the pesto and the brie. Every bite was stellar. Sandwich analysis complete. Dessert: Jack Daniels double fudge brownie. Yep. Essentially, it is a traditional fudge brownie......except for the higher quality ingredients and care put into it. So it's better than a traditional brownie. I honestly don't get brownies too often, but the woman helping me out insisted upon it. Touche, Yellow Carrot employee...touche. To my delight, the brownie was not overly rich/sweet. The depth was right on point. But atop the brownie rests this decadent blanket of chocolate ganache, drizzled with what is called Jack Daniels caramel. Ay. There's the rub. Subtle notes of coffee added a great essence to the brownie, which I felt was smart. ...and it tasted good. The friendly and appreciative guy I am, I wound up chatting it up with the woman behind the counter. After wrapping up our little convo, she surprised me, to my delight, with some complimentary cookies. Wow. Pretty awesome. These things don't go unnoticed. People mention it in reviews. In conclusion, go to the Yellow Carrot. I can only speak on behalf of my experience. And I have. Keep eating, friends. read more

Before i begin, i would like to mention that you have to be willing to pay the prices. 8-10$ sandwiches and 4-7$ desserts. Its expensive to eat here, but for people who go out rarey, this is a great treat! If I could mark this as 4.5 stars I would because of high prices. I don't come here too often because of the prices but I am never disappointed! I first tried the yellow carrot because I had heard that they had gluten free bread. The bread is great! At first I didnt really like it but thats only because I was not used to pepitas being cooked in bread. These sandwiches are huge! They are full of ingredients! My favs are the Hot Blue Chick and the Wild Philly. They are also super messy but that is a plus in my opinion. GF bread costs extra. The desserts are fantastic in my opinion. I usually go for the macaroons which are huge, dipped in chocolate, and are made with vanilla bean powder. The samoan macaroons are a macaroon sandwich with caramel and dipped. Since this weekend was my birthday, and i was so busy I didnt get any cake, I decided to get myself a cupcake. This started out as a one time purchase (because they are 7$) but I am thinking there will be weak cupcake moments in my future. They had five gluten free cupcakes of the 9 or so varieties in the case. Yes they are rich, but they are enough for two desserts. I have visited Yellow Carrot many more times than I should have. I am gluten-free and the amount of gluten-free options is phenomenal. The prices are very pricey. The past two times I have gone and ordered the gluten-free mac and cheese by phone with 3 extras is has cost 15 WHOPPING dollars each time. Don't get me wrong the mac and cheese is delicious. I have called ahead both times and they said it would take about 15-20 minutes. I got there about 15 minutes later and had to wait an extra 30 minutes. The gluten-free cupcakes are dry and very rich. I enjoy the strawberry gluten-free cupcake but that's the only cupcake. The costumer service is not so great either. Last time I was waiting my extra 30 minutes, a lady came in asking for a cake for a shower of some sort. Sari came from the back and told the lady she should have gone online. Sari politely said "But here you can look at an order form". My question is, how is someone supposed to know anything about your work if you don't show them what you have previously done. Not trying to say how to run her business but. Concluding, I am very disappointed in the costumer service and the prices at Yellow Carrot. read more

This place came highly recommended so I thought coming here would be a nice option one evening. Well let me tell you this might be the worst and most over priced meals I've had in a longtime. I ordered the Surf & Turf and I ordered it medium and the waitress argued with me and said they could only cook it medium rare. When you order a steak and ask it to be cooked a certain way it should be done that way. When my food comes out and I cut into my steak it's beyond medium rare and wasn't hardly cooked at all and my shrimp and scallops are cold. I politely ask the waitress to send it back to have my steak cooked properly and I wait patiently. When it does come back out it's not even the same cut of meat it's a dried out microwaved feeling and tasting sirloin if I was to guess, but I can tell you it wasn't a filet like it's was supposed to be. This was quite possibly one of the worst meals I've ever had and it wasn't fresh at all. The food was terrible and didn't meet the standards that the restaurant portrays. I live near this restaurant and have been going there since it was in its old location nearby. At the old location I would get some take n bake dinners and if you knew which ones to get they were ok, although never worth the huge price tag. Since they moved to the new location and have become more of a restaurant I have given them chance after chance after chance. They are always training new staff, obviously they can't hold onto waitstaff for one reason or another (probably that it's usually dead in there), and the food is very hit and miss. When it's a hit it's decent at best. When it's a miss it's nearly inedible. They try way too hard to be some elite foodie restaurant and they are miles away from being able to achieve that goal. There's no need to add 20 ingredients into a breakfast sandwich in my opinion, and if you do, it better taste good instead of being a weird thing that has different flavors in each bite. And everything is crazy expensive which doesn't help their cause with me either I was super hopeful that this would be a new go to spot on the north end of town. And like I said I've tried sooo hard to like it. But on it's bad days it is the worst restaurant in Durango, on good days it's in the bottom 10%. I'm sure the catering is great but as for the restaurant in my opinion, avoid it at all costs. It's a waste of time and money. read more

I just had lunch at the Yellow Carrot. The waitstaff didn't approach us until we had been in the restaurant for 15 minutes. That should have been our tip to leave. Be aware the marinated tenderloin steak sandwich is just roast beef luncheon meat with melted gobs of some kind of cheese (the menu said Gorgonzola but I didn't recognize it as that). The waitstaff served us a Cobb salad rather than the Caesar salad we had ordered but never returned to check on our meal until we had put the credit card on the table to leave. When we told them about the problem she brought a dried out cookie to the table and never apologized for the problem. Rather the waitstaff said "I hope this doesn't kill you". The piles of trash on the sidewalk should have been our cue to have lunch elsewhere. read more

I love the yellow carrot. It is not a super affordable meal but we will often go for special occasions and birthdays. I will be getting married in August and need a special cake made that is dairy free and gluten free. I was extremely bummed that when I called their bakery (it says online to call to order) they are no longer taking special orders for bakery items. My only option is to come see what they have in their bakery case the day before or day of my wedding. I am not able to order a cake from them even if I pay in advance. Im sorry, but this is terrible customer service. What's even the point of having a bakery if you can't order things from them. I am super disappointed and probably won't be back to yellow carrot. Its obvious they don't care about their customers or want the business. Is this a sign they are not going to make it after this year or are they just too lazy to make the bakery items people want to order? Very frustrated. read more

For an 8" cake with nothing too special about it, this is a ridiculous price to pay. Bought a birthday cake recently and found the icing to be rock hard and flavorless. Then the "carrot" cake had blueberries in it!!! I tried taking it back to have them look at it and and find out why the cake was so lacking. However, I found the customer service to be lacking when I did come back. Not only did the lady cut a size able slice into my cake, she then proceeded to try and convince me the icing should be that hard. I was at a loss for why you would cut into the cake that way, why the icing would be so hard and why there was blueberries in it. She offered to only give us back the cake but it was so bad I just told her to keep it! The biggest shame is they lost a loyal customer. What a waste of $26 dollars. read more

Just in Durango for a few hours and had dinner and lunch here. Wow! It was so delicious I could cry. I am passionate about food that is nourishing that also tastes amazing and let me tell you this place is A++! For lunch I had the guacamole edamame with fried beet salad. And it was all so delicious it felt like I had been transported to a magical place where vegetables are the most delicious thing you could ever want. I was so satisfied after lunch I couldn't get dessert but I wanted to. All the desserts looked so amazing! For dinner I had the vegetarian meatballs and wow! They were so delicious and the layering of textures and flavors was unprecedented. I had a lovely glass of red wine and for dessert the lemon ginger cake. Unbelievably yummy! The service is fast and friendly and obviously they love their job because they are wonderful. I live several thousand miles away from here but can't wait to come back! We wanted to bring "high heel cupcakes' to my daughter's wedding in Dunton Colorado. We called the Yellow Carrot and Sari said she could do the cupcakes and had done them before. I wanted to pick them up on the way to Dunton on a Thursday morning at 7 AM. We arrived and they were not ready. We came back over an hour later and they still were not ready. Finally we took the one dozen cupcakes at $10 per cupcake and headed out. Every one of the cupcakes fell apart and they could not be fixed.
