I was here for a week-long business trip, and I had a lot of bad experiences at this hotel (and I feel like I rarely have much to complain about). I don't think I'll return.
When I checked in, they were unable to find my reservation. The lady at the desk basically gave up and demanded that I produce my reservation confirmation number. Well, the only way for me to do that was to empty my bag to find my laptop, get online, etc. etc. Doing that right at the front desk was borderline humiliating. (It turned out that they swapped my first and last name, somehow. I'm not sure what they should have done in that situation---but I think decorum dictates that it's their problem, not mine, so long as I didn't make a genuine major error.) This was made worse by the fact that the lobby is really just a tiny desk with not enough room to maneuver in.
With that resolved, I headed up to my room, which was a huge disappointment. There was *no natural light of any sort* and the room was absurdly small even for European standards. There was no hint of a closet or coat rack---just a few coat hangers on the wall. There was no stand for my suitcase. The AC system used degrees (celsius, which as an American is absolutely meaningless, but whatever) and I couldn't seem to get to a point where I could just make it (kinda loud and whiny-sounding) shut off so I could get to sleep. Worst of all, there was no natural light of any sort. I wouldn't have guessed that I'd care that much, but it left me absolutely miserable, and I had an unbelievably hard time falling asleep---and getting up at a sensible hour. I thought of eating my reservation and checking out after the first night---and I still sorta wish I did.
Another huge issue was the shower. I could not get the water hot enough to tolerate. I asked the desk to look into it, and they said they would, but it was the same the next day. There was also a really poor selection of soaps etc. They just provide two things: a bar of hand soap, and a baggy of body wash / shampoo. Point 1: there's no such thing as a body wash that's also a shampoo...nobody with four brain cells to rub together wants to put body soap in their hair. Point 2: Conditioner?...lots of people condition daily---I am no snob but I condition more often than I shampoo. And I travel from the US with a compact bag. Even cheap Eastern European hostels have better options. For shame.
Lastly, I had a week-long allergy attack---the worst I've probably had in a decade---the entire time I was staying there. Not sure if that was just a combination of jetlag and London---believe it or not, the pollution metrics are worse than NYC, where I live---or maybe the hotel just doesn't have good HEPA filters or has problems with new construction-related things outgassing.
The one thing I liked is the cafe happy hour wasn't bad. Of course it's infected with depressed middle-aged couples and shouty bros in businesswear---would be nicer if it was a bar or lounge so people felt like they could mingle (and get away from the worst folks).
I really wonder what people who like this place like about it. read more
