He is very knowledgeable of the traditions and has a very easy-going manner that draws kids in. This is the practical Kung Fu like Jackie Chan/Bruce Lee tradition, but obviously more basic defense moves. Teaches balance, strategy, focus, and commitment. Enthusiastic assistants help on some days. They are still doing the "soft opening" so they welcome folks to come and try it out. I…read morestumbled upon USSD on Facebook and they were offering two weeks for free and so I decided to check it out. I liked that during the pandemic they taught the classes outside or virtual. Both my son, and now my 5 year old daughter, have been taking classes here for almost a year now. Our first encounter was with Sensei Christine. She is so friendly and easy to talk to, and basically the administrative backbone of this place. Whenever I had a question, schedule change, or whatever, she has always been so accommodating and makes you feel like you a part of a family. My kids absolutely love Sensei Jack! He always makes classes engaging and funny. He is really good with the kids. I like how they not only teach karate, but also the principles of karate and how to deal with every day life situations, like dealing with a bully. I have learned some life lessons myself while watching in on his group classes! The program itself consists of a 30-minute one-on-one with a trainer and then 3 optional 45-minute group classes (based on age). They earn stripes on their belts depending on what they have learned for that particular belt. Once they receive 4 stripes they can test for the next color belt. Tests are usually done once a month. The kids have incentives to earn "ninja dollars" which they can collect to redeem for toys at the "ninja store." The kids really loves this and gives them an opportunity to work harder and be more engaged.

I was initially drawn to Russ when I competed in his "sub only" tournament in August. I told myself in that moment that I would be in to just "check out his gym" before the end of the year. Russ' kindness and energy inspired me to sign up after my very first class. There's an apparent family vibe radiating through the gym - and I leave happier than when I arrived - every single time. Russ' teaching style is so unique in that he is able to convey the most advanced techniques in a digestible, perspicuous format. Last, this gym is the cleanest, most well kept facility that I've ever trained in. I am so honored and grateful to be a student of Russ', and to have found my jiu jitsu home. In 24 years of training Jiu Jitsu, I've come to know what the differences are regarding Instructors. Ok-Instructors are like Road Maps. You learn what they have to show you & then you decide what your path will be. Some students will find their path, while others may still be looking for the best route. Good-Instructors are like Treasure Maps. You learn what they have to show you & then they show you their pathways. They may not be the best pathways for you initially, but having direction is good and eventually you'll fit into the route. Amazing-Instructors like Russ Miura are like a Road Map with GPS. You learn what he has to show you & once you choose your path, Russ will help you refine it as he guides you through it, even though it's different from his path. Hopefully this is helpful.
