I cannot say enough great things about Tustin Shaolin! I feel incredibly grateful to have found this place while searching for somewhere to learn Tai Chi. From day one, I was welcomed into a warm, supportive community that truly cares about its students. Since starting Tai Chi here, I've noticed a real improvement in my breathing (I have asthma) and my body feels stronger, more balanced, and more at ease overall. The benefits have been both physical and calming, and I look forward to class every week. Doug, the owner, is absolutely amazing. His passion for Tai Chi and Shaolin arts is obvious, and he genuinely cares about every person in the class. He takes the time to give thoughtful corrections, explains movements clearly, and always offers alternatives if you have any physical limitations. His depth of knowledge and care really set this place apart. When I first became interested in Tai Chi, I tried checked out tik tok or YouTube videos but it was all over the place so I began my search for an in person place (in December) it's not February and taking an in-person class is a completely different experience. The personalized guidance, hands-on corrections, and insight you receive here are things you simply cannot get from a video. It has made all the difference in my progress and confidence. I just started a 2-week trial of Tai Chi, and after only one hour of practice, I can already feel a difference in both my mind and body. I've been meditating for about 5 years, and beyond sitting meditation, I was looking for a practice that could support and deepen it. Tai Chi turned out to be exactly that. Training at Tustin Shaolin Martial Arts has been positively transformative. I originally started with tai chi lessons, but within three weeks I began attending the shaolin kung fu classes, as well. The flat monthly tuition for each style allows me to get as much value as I want by showing up to as many classes as I want. Through consistently high expectations, firm and insightful instruction, and help from senior students in a family-style model, I've gained skill, strength, and confidence in my physical abilities over the last couple of years. It is the worst place and Doug who is the sensei and owner of this place is the worst person. My children, one 7 years old and the other 6 years old, were here until yesterday Friday, March 4, 2022. When I enrolled my oldest son, the first three months were ok, there were days that I stayed inside the classroom to see how he taught to my child and other days I did not stay. My oldest boy told me that the sensei was always disappointed of him. I told this to Doug and he told me that it is in the beginning that he give time for my son to learn the routines that are difficult. I believed him. Shortly after I enrolled my youngest son and he told me that the sensei yelled at him a lot. Yesterday my husband parks in front of the place and sees how this PSEUDO sensei YELLED AT MY YOUNGET SON AND SLAPPED ON THE BACK HEAD AND KICKED MY YOUNGEST SON'S HEEL so that my son would put him in the correct position. If I had seen that with my eyes I would surely get out of the car and go in to get my children out of this place. I couldn't sleep all night because I can't believe how a pseudo sensei yelled and slapped my son on the head. Today March 5, 2022 I went to talk to Doug and he ACCEPTED that he hits my son on his head. My children didn't tell me anything out of fear. That is what he did with my children, he turned them into a bunch of fears, abusing them because they are small and defenseless and buying them with a candy that he gave them at the end of their class. This place is the worst experience of our life. My children no longer want to attend any martial arts classes for fear of history repeating itself. I know it will take time for us to heal from this bad experience. I only leave this review to alert other parents about this pseudo sensei since here his children will not be treated with respect but quite the opposite here Doug will destroy his self-esteem completely. read more

I am grateful to have found Tustin Shaolin Martial Arts. We enrolled our our two youngest children in the Kung Fu class. At 8 and 10 years old, they both have learned to control themselves better both mentally and physically. What started out as a "fun" option has grown into a discipline and learning experience that they both look forward to. As a plus, we have even seen more focus and respect from them at home. The entire student body has been very helpful and welcoming and the "family" environment is perfect for the kids. I highly recommend this school. read more

I love the classes here! This school offers traditional Shaolin Kung Fu instruction. The teacher truly cares about the progress of the students and is always there to provide pointers if needed. Shaolin is physically and mentally challenging, and needless to say you also get an incredible work-out. Classes are open to men and women of all ages and are small enough to allow for ample personalized attention. It doesn't feel like those martial arts places that are so commercialized. It's a flat fee for which you can train/attend as many classes as you like. I am hooked. So glad I found this school - it's in Old Town Tustin. read more

This is the Tai Chi school I was looking for. Master Doug is a great teacher and motivator. He is very knowledgeable and cares about his students. My 10 year old son and 7 year old son have been really enjoying Doug's Shaolin lesson. The teacher is strict, which make us see results in a short period of time. The first lesson my 10 year old was so sloppy, legs were never straight, couldn't squat low enough, and rest whenever he could. That was after 6 months of Karate! Now after 3 weeks of training, the moves are so smooth and pretty, especially the attitude and ethics are positive and inspiring. Unbelievable! As parents, besides the teacher, we also really appreciate how wonderful Doug's senior students are. They treat the boys with respect (like they are adults) and responsibility (correct every single move). I told the boys it's very easy to be a sloppy instructor but very difficult to be a strict instructor, which requires heart pouring. At Doug's gym, every one is responsible with heart, which is very rare to see elsewhere. The morale is right and priceless at this place. We are so lucky to find this place! We take the boys 5 times a week to this place and never felt wasting time. Before we took the boys to Karate 3 times a week and it is always a drag for us! We have decided to enroll our 3 year old daughters when they can learn. They don't learn just physical here, more importantly they learn life lessons here! read more

I noticed this school when it originally opened and wondered what it was all about. Later when I was reading a book about Chi Gung (Qigong) and Tai Chi, I came home one day and found an ad for this school hanging from my door knob. It was obviously meant to be that I at least check it out. Since I am very serious about what I wish to do with martial arts and who I am willing to train under, I made several trips to watch the classes and to speak with the instructor. The approachability and sincere concern by Doug sold me on this place. I find that I connect very well with the him and the school, and in the three (nearly four) months I've been training there, it's made a significant improvement in my overall quality of life. Doug is not only a great instructor, he is also a great coach for life, and let's face it, we can all use that kind of help! Our children went to a big name martial arts studio but we felt that they weren't learning much and that they wouldn't be able to defend themselves in real life situations. Found out about Tustin Shaolin and sat in on 2 classes before we decided to switch. The main determining factor was how incredibly dedicated the Laoshi ("teacher) and his group of students were. There was a newbie training and I was in total disbelief that she only started a few months prior. (We had 1 month training with nothing to show for in comparison) Laoshi not only teaches them Kung Fu, but also discipline and valuable life lessons. My favorite.."Stay awake. Always. If bad guys come at you- you need to be awake." I am super busy but can never pull myself away from watching their training-especially their beautiful forms. If you are looking for a no frills school that is passionate about teaching rather then making a ton of money off of you this is it (one monthly flat fee for unlimited training- wow! ) Best class to check out for kids is 5pm class. *warning to the weak at heart- your child will be reprimanded if they don't try their best every time. As a rookie's mom, it's not easy to watch. However, the amazing end result is undeniable. My 6 year old quotes his Laoshi "a day of training you miss is a day you never get back!" Really, truly a wonderful school run by a headmaster with tons of experience and passion. read more

I have been going for almost a year now and love it! It is a very supportive environment while still pushing students to excel. The instructor is extremely knowledgeable and has extensive personal experience and is quite possibly the most approachable martial arts instructor I have encountered. I like that the instructor knows me by name and cares about how well I am doing, even caring how I am doing outside of Kung Fu. I have studied some martial arts before, I studied Aikido, but I have found Kung Fu to be more suited for me personally due to the well rounded training offered at Tustin Shaolin Martial Arts. Classes are open to men, women and children and are offered six days a week. Rates are very reasonable and signing up does not mean only being offered a few classes a week you are allowed to attend. You can show up for as many classes as you think you can handle, really the more classes you attend the more you are getting out of your money. As busy as I can be during the week, there is always a class open to go train when I need a break. Bad experience with the instructor. Not polite, and very rude. Puts down numerous people. DO NOT go to this school if you cannot handle an absolute non-sympathetic atmosphere and a place where the instructor is very rigid and not caring, where he thinks it's acceptable to always put down his students and be rude. I quit this place after he accused me of something very much irrelevant to what I needed to talk about to him. Never coming back again; do not recommend this place. read more
