All of the teachers are supportive and inspiring role models and we appreciate that she has learned principles of respect and good sportsmanship through her ongoing practice at this place. When I joined Colhado, I was anxious and didn't know what to expect. I mean, I knew how to shrimp from my 1 semester in Judo at SJSU, but even that I needed to work on. My first class was great, there were folks there that recognized I was a completely clueless white belt (still am) and they took me under their wing. During drills and sparring, people were very accommodating of my wrist and made sure I was okay, which I appreciated. Even though I had a 1 week free trial, I signed-up the next day because I knew I wanted to continue training here. Colhado's is a family oriented gym. Everyone treats others like family and there's only positive vibes here. I've been training here for 3+ months now and I've enjoyed every single day that I've been on the mats. Professor Matheus cares about his student's growth and has created a friendly environment for everyone to train at. Whether it's the morning class, early-afternoon, evening or weekend classes (I've done most of them!) you're going to get an A+ education in the art of Jiu Jitsu, along with other super positive people training right beside you. See you on the mats.

The coaches teach the details behind each technique instead of just showing moves, so you learn not only what to do, but why it works. That approach has made a huge difference in my own understanding of jiu-jitsu. The atmosphere is welcoming and respectful. Whether you're brand new or have years of experience, everyone is treated like they're part of the team. The advanced belts are approachable, the training is challenging without feeling intimidating, and there is a genuine culture of helping each other improve. One thing I really appreciate is that standards are high. Progress and promotions feel earned, which creates an environment where people are motivated to keep learning and getting better. At the end of the day, a great academy isn't just measured by how good the instructors are--it's measured by the kind of community they build. This is a place where people enjoy training, support one another, and continue growing both on and off the mats. If you're looking for a jiu-jitsu academy with outstanding instruction, a winning competition team, a positive culture, and teammates who genuinely want to see you succeed, I highly recommend giving this place a try.

I really wanted to love this place because, to be fair, the quality of the Brazilian jiu jitsu…read moretraining here is excellent. The instructors clearly know what they're doing, and the kids' program is well-structured and engaging. However, as a parent, the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest issue? No WiFi for parents. If you're going to have parents sitting around for an hour or more during classes, it's pretty unreasonable not to provide even basic internet access. Not everyone can just disconnect from work or responsibilities during that time. The waiting area is minimal, and without WiFi, you're essentially stuck doing nothing or burning through your mobile data. In this day and age, that feels like a pretty basic amenity that should be standard--especially for a place that otherwise operates at a high level. So yes, great training--but not a very parent-friendly environment. Until they address this, it's hard to fully recommend.

What sets Coach Mike apart from other martial arts masters is that he is able to infuse his pragmatic teaching style with an epic sense of humor that makes everyone feel great about training at his gym. He is honest and direct with you, and does not BS you about your skill level just so you can be a returning and paying customer. He tells you the truth so you can practically improve your strengths and fix your weaknesses. He cares deeply about his students and has shown such kindness and hospitality to us which is so convicting to me as a young man who wants to help make this world a better place. One of the key things Coach Mike has told me is that Jiu Jitsu can help you with all aspects of your life, since it helps you be more disciplined, consistent and persevering in never giving up to solve different problems. This has proven to be true since coming back to law school, I felt more confident and ready to tackle my studies more than I ever have before. And I honestly could not have written that if I had not joined his gym under the invitation of my dear friend Sandeep Singh, who is also an amazing instructor at Coach Mike's gym. Coach Mike has created a family culture of warriors, and I am deeply humbled and honored to be a part of it.

Hello fellow people,…read more I tried this place out long enough to form my opinion. I would recommend spending your time wisely by going elsewhere. To begin this place has a striking training once a week. I watched in amazement as people punched a punching bag full of recycled rubber tires and sand. It reminded me of a funny cartoon seeing the energy wave transfer back on the striker. I saw attempts at kickboxing by instructors that obviously had no Muay Thai or Kickboxing experience. Now onto the reason why I came to this place, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The BJJ training did not meet my expectations of a professional BJJ training academy. The business owner seemed distracted by his cell phone or negativity most of the time. The were small but there seemed to be a high count of injuries, including the owner who may not spar, due to having had his arm broken doing BJJ. Good, lively and intelligent students were routinely knocked down a peg, or brow beat, so to speak, when they were doing well. This seemed to serve no efficient purpose as these were not belligerent or lazy students. It seems counterproductive. this is not a tough love, it's like Pinnochio being trained by the going nowhere boys. There seemed to be an air of insecurity in the owner and staff. The women that courageously came to the place once, probably never came back for a reason. Most people that attend BJJ classes are not broken people and do not want or need that. We want proper professional training which is a fair trade for payments. So in my opinion go find a dojo that meets your expectations. In the martial arts world there are always people looking for a place to belong, a home, a club and those people could be professional trained, not neglected of professional training. This type of training in the short term wastes time. In the long term it will crutch or starve growth. It may not be healthy for youth or adults. Not for me, and maybe not for you. Thank you for reading my review. Good day or good night.
