As a british expat i was very surprised to stumble across a celtic store in a small town in central Texas! It has a good selection of gifts, trinkets, kitchenwares, kilts, hand crafted items and even some food from across the pond. The shop owners are very welcoming and friendly to talk to. This is a super nice little shop with all sorts of neat things from clothing, to toys, to pins and more. The shop owner was super friendly and talkative and helped me look for some things. She was even cool about letting us wait out the rain that started pouring when we were inside. Parking is on the street and pretty easy. read more

Having gone to Notre Dame, I've embraced my Irish heritage in ways above and beyond our football team. Today is my mom's birthday so when I heard she wanted a silver cross, I headed to things celtic to see what I could dig up. The place is chock-a-block full of gaelic goodies and irish inspiration. Woolen sweaters and pewter chalices and silver jewelry and poetry and cookbooks and haunting music and a small area out back with grinning fairies and a little stage. Stop by this shop and take a minute to enjoy, look around and buy something pretty for a friend. It's pretty unique in the grand scheme of things and hell, everyone could use a little more irish in their lives. And that is not a euphemism for booze. This time at least. read more

Before moving to Austin, I used to drive in from the Hill Country to visit this store... the owner and her employees have never been anything but extremely helpful and friendly. Now that I live in town, I make weekly visits to see what new shipments have come in and to find out about the latest events. As to 'Plastic Paddy'... yeah, there is a little bit of knock-off souvenir stuff on the shelves... ask the owner why. It's because enough 'Target' shoppers have complained there wasn't anything 'cheap' to buy. The owner makes a couple of trips a year to Ireland and Scotland to personally meet with many of the artisans whose wares she carries, and this past year even went to the Isle of Mann. It was wonderful talking to the staff about places we knew in common in Donegal and Galway. This place gets 5 stars from me because its a 5 star kind of place! Edit: This is the only place in Texas to walk in and buy a Utilikilt if you are looking for one!!! read more

Things Celtic is one of my all-time favorite stores, and you totally don't have to be of Celtic descent to appreciate a visit here. They have a wonderful variety of items for sale--pottery, decorations, stained glass hangings, clothing, food, bath and perfume items, blankets, baby stuff, yard decorations, calendars, books, music, jewelry--OH, THE JEWELRY!!! Four large cases of brooches, rings, necklaces, earrings, kilt pins, you name it. I have drooled over so many items in those cases over the years and been extremely fortunate enough to be able to own a few of the shiny things. Lenora is a gracious owner who always takes the time to chat with us. She (and anyone who works there, they're all very nice) will answer any question you have about anything there and be able to tell you specifically where she got it from or who hand-makes it. They can help you plan a Celtic wedding, or just size you for kilt rental if you'd like. There's almost always hot tea and cookies available as well, so you can nibble while you look through everything. There's also a cute-as-a-button store cat named Druscilla who is often wandering through the store or sacked out on the chair behind the register. Things Celtic is also a huge supporter of the Austin-area Celtic community, and they frequently donate items and/or their store for local Celtic events. I have loved Things Celtic for many years, and I hope they stay around for many many more to come. read more

I discovered Things Celtic in 1999 when I first began my research into Celtic musical traditions. I was thoroughly impressed with the selection and knowledge of the the owners and the staff. They have a wide variety of hand made clothing, decorations, tableware, games, as well as history books, recorded and sheet music, heirlooms, and food items (teas, cookies, etc). If you're proud of your Celtic heritage, this is the shop for you. You will love the selection! The store is very easy to find and easily accessed from 35th St. in the Jefferson Square area. Firstly, they have closed and moved to another town in Texas, maybe to Dublin, Texas? They had a great store that will be sadly missed by many people. I will miss this store very much -- it is scheduled to move to Dublin, TX, in May 2018 -- it was very handy to have a local shop that carried Celtic jewelry and clothing items and CDs and gee-gaws rather than be dependent on mail order or online stores. They even sometimes stocked some bagpipe practice chanters and piping supplies for the local bands. (Nothing from Brittany, though, sad to say.) Where will I go now for haggis in a can? I don't know why Dublin is going to be a better hub than Austin, but I can easily relate to and sympathize with the horrible Austin tax burden that is driving out established local businesses and homeowners alike. Good luck in your future incarnation, Things Celtic, and local PBS advertising will not be the same without you! read more

I really wanted to like this store. My husband (then fiance) and I went in to look at their jewelry selection, as I really wanted a claddagh ring as my wedding band. We browsed the store for a while, since the lady at the counter seemed to be focused on an elderly couple looking at various items. When the couple moved on to another area of the store, we politely stood there for a few minutes, waiting for some sort of acknowledgment while we browsed the jewelry counter. We were never greeted or even given a brief smile and/or nod to acknowledge our presence, when she obviously saw us. After waiting a few minutes, we said "excuse me" a few times, and finally she came over. She seemed to have no interest in helping us, partly answered a question that I asked, then walked away, before I was able to ask another question. An earlier review from R.V.B. on here may have stated it best "If you are not dressed right or don't look right, you don't 'count' as a customer". The complete and utter lack of customer service was highly disappointing. It really is a shame, because we were prepared to spend a good amount of money at this store. read more

Nice quiet little shop off the beaten path with plenty of celtic finds. Family crest, clan crest, and clan pins were plentiful as well as food and house hold goods. Jewelery selection was gorgeous. Wish i had been able to buy everything i saw but was on vacation and wouldnt have had room to pack it all. The woman behind the counter was very friendly with her responses to our questions and very knowledgable about everything in store and what could be ordered. She was even kind enough to inform us of the renaissance fair starting that weekend. All in all i loved the store, the atmosphere, and rhe craftsmen ship of the products sold here. read more

One of my friends wanted to stop there while she was also visiting. For having one of the most common Irish surnames, I didn't see my name anywhere in the store. Odd. We've been in a few times and have been greeted by the staff each time, offered help, and been treated very nicely. Both times I happened to be in t-shirt and workout pants (and not the cute suburban mom yoga bra and tight pants and perfectly pony-tailed highlighted hair either) and had my four kids with me (one reviewer suggested he/she wasn't dressed well enough to get good service). They were nice to my kids, didn't hover in fear of my boys' hands knocking things over. They offered help to my sons, who were shopping for kilts for their Scottish Country Dance ball, and the owner spent about 20 minutes fetching and swapping items from their kilt rental bins to come up with an assortment that matched and fit him properly. My sons are 8 and 10, ages that many shopkeepers would perhaps rather not be wandering their stores, yet the folks here treated them just like adults. The women's clothing is from India, however the owner knew the clothes were sweat-shop free and from a small store rather than a large factory; she has met the owner and I believe visited the manufacturing facility. I would have liked to have seen ghillies and other dance shoes, and if they had those then it would rate 5 stars as it would truly be "as good as it gets." Besides the trinkets that one reviewer explained were there at request, there are music books, CDs, books on Scotland and Ireland, kids' books and nice Dover coloring books, cards, European candies and snacks. They also had jewelry, nicer crosses, boxes, decorative items. It was indeed a good source for all of our Scottish needs that day and I look forward to shopping again. read more

The parking lot is hard to get into and there's very little parking. We lucked out when we pulled in, a car was backing out to leave. It's a very small store and the owner/manager was there with a cashier, neither of them bothered to even look at my husband and I when we walked in, much less greeted us. I think they could have at least acknowledged us when we went in. Everything in this store was overpriced. Stickers/decals for more than a few bucks, majorly overpriced imported items, like crisps and drinks. The selection was very small. They had a TON of garb, but it was massively overpriced, as were the wall decorations. Honestly, the whole thing was just a disappointment. read more

I have never been treated more rudely then I was treated at this store when I walked in on August 24th at 3 pm. I read the other reviews and I would have loved to meet the other kind people that work yhere but unfortunately I won't be back. The cat was friendlier. I asked to look at rings and it would seem I asked for her first born. No words at all came from her mouth, she just stood there. I cant' even believe she works anywhere that people would go, She seems to really hate her job and working with people. I absolutely love going to this store. It's clean, bright, and always has great celtic music playing softly in the background. They've managed to create a really nice ambiance for browsing, and the store is set up so that shopping is rather pleasant (it's easy to see things, stuff isn't crowded together,etc). The things the store carries are high quality, and the staff is super nice and really knowledgeable about it all (I like the fact that I always see the same people when I go in - it speaks well that they have essentially no turnover in staff). I've never been able to go in there and not buy something! If you're looking for gifts with a Celtic/Irish flair, you will definitely find something that 'works'. And if you're looking for kilts/kilt accessories, it's THE place to go. I've lost track of the number of my friends who own traditional kilts and utilikilts from them. I've been coming frequently to Things Celtic since it opened in 1997; they always have some new wonderful item to tempt me with, whether it be a particularly striking piece of jewelry, or a new Irish-language book, or some new music. As to that, Things Celtic has made a point of featuring music from many of our local Celtic musicians, either recordings or live in-store performances. It does a great deal to support our local Celtic community, providing space for our local craobh of the Gaelic League to meet, as well as a monthly song session. The staff itself is knowledgeable of the various Celtic traditions, and quite friendly. Come see for yourself! read more
