In the last couple of years, I have tried beans from many specialty coffee roasters ranging from the best local options to mail order from all over the country. Third Coast has become my 'daily driver' for espresso, as their beans offer the best combination of quality, value, and service. El Guapo has been the top choice so far with classic caramel, chocolate notes and a nice syrupy mouthfeel. Every bag has been consistently-roasted and quick to dial-in. Third Coast has so far resisted the insane shrinkflation that has affected many coffee options. As a comparison, local roaster Greater Goods is nearly 2x more expensive, and Third Coast is better. You can smell the roasting beans from outside when you pull up. The staff is very friendly on explaining the different bean types/locations, and then breaking down the type of flavor I want in my brew. I don't have a grinder at home but of course, they had one on site and ready to brew to my specific needs (cold brewing at home). Austin is the "Live Food Truck Capital of the World." 2. Austin is the "Live Whole Foods Capital of the World." 3. Austin is the "Live Texans-who-eat-BBQ-but-vote-Democrat Capital of the World." Oh yeah, and maybe one more: Austin is the "Live Coffee Roasting Capital of the World." Seattle & San Francisco may have more boutique roasters, but they're not capitals & grunge is so 1990. If you've had a really good cup of coffee from an Austin coffeehouse or hipster restaurant recently, it's probably from one of our own local roasters. You won't confuse their stuff with Folgers. And I'm starting to bore myself - the bottom line is Third Coast Coffee beans will cost you $11.99 for twelve ounces at Whole Foods or Central Market, but $9 for sixteen ounces at their South Congress roasting facility. For the exact same stuff. I think Forrest Gump once said, "I'm not a smart man, but I know what a good coffee deal is." They're open weekdays until 6, you won't go wrong with the Yirgacheffe, and I'm just a big fan of their Third Coast Blend & classic Double French. Third Coast isn't a cafe but rather a coffee roaster. When you walk in, you can see the roasting machines at work. Although they do not sell cups of coffee, lattes, etc., free samples are available. The cold brew, Frios Mio, is brewed from a blend of coffee, and is very smooth with a pleasant acidity. It also has a slight thickness, and chocolatey character, which is nice. The Double French is one of the darkest roasts I've ever had. It is taken as far as coffee can go before being burnt. But it is surprisingly pleasant for such dark coffee. The Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Natural is the absolute standout. Very light, distinct floral character and pleasant acidity. This is an excellent coffee to drink black. I recommend a visit to Third Coast. read more

I am extremely picky about my coffee and I love this place. I regularly order their Decaf Peru. It's a wonderful, dark medium-full bodied decaf. Rich flavor and mouthfeel. Great brewed as pour-over or as part of a latte. USDA organic, water processed, and fair trade. And good news for us non-Austin locals -- they ship! Michael knows my order -- 2 lbs every 2 weeks -- and is super awesome and friendly, but then again everyone I've been in contact with at Third Coast has been awesome. Y'all rock. I love their coffee, as does my better half, and have been buying it for a year or so from whole foods and central market in Dallas. Their website is very informative and I have called and asked questions and they are always so helpful. We went well out of our way on the way back from vacation to stop by their roasting facility. We purchased fresh coffee (roasted 2 days before) and although they dont sell coffees like Americanos etc., they offered me some coffee to try and told us to help ourselves to creamer. Again, so nice. I was slightly disappointed in the facility. All you can see at the front are pounds of coffee for sale. I had envisioned the front area to be more like the coffee areas in whole-foods, nicely decorated and nice counter where I could purchase some coffee and chill for a while. But, they are a roasters and not a coffee store so the fault was in my expectations. It also seems some yelpers were offered a tour, which we weren't. I've been drinking coffee since I was 8 (it's okay, I'm South American). I like a nice dark roast and I drink it black. One problem that you can encounter is bitterness when you drink your coffee in this fashion. When I met Linda who had a stand set up at Fresh Plus, that was how she got me. "Our dark roast is not bitter." She's right. It's not. I sampled and purchased the Italian Dark Roast and I'm a happy woman. I have a coffee maker that has the grinder built in and every time I pass through the kitchen to the back of the house I will stop dead in my tracks as the scent of the beans reach my nose. It's so arresting. I've actually forgotten why I was headed to the other part of the house thanks to the beans. I need to stop by one day and check out the facility as I would love to see it. We spent a morning visiting the roasting company and were pleasantly surprised by how friendly and helpful they were! We met Logan, one of their roasters, who took time to show us around and gave us a tour of the facility. We also met several of the other staff who helped us choose beans based on our preferences. We tasted two of the samples they had on that day and ended up buying four pounds of coffee to take home with us (Colombian, Vino Negro, and two pounds of the "frio mio" cold brew blend), along with a Third Coast mug! We will definitely be back the next time we are in Austin and hope to see them expand beyond Texas in the next few years. If you guys see this - thanks for showing us around! read more

I order about 8 pounds a month from Third coast to feed my espresso addiction. I've never received any coffee roasted more than a week before I received it via shipment ( I live in North Austin). The roasts are perfectly consistent from batch to batch and I love the fact that they are about half the cost of other local roasters so I'm more inclined to spend 9 bucks to try a pound of something I normally wouldn't try. Such a cool place. I love that we got to go behind the bar and make up cups of coffee just like we were family or friends. I got the milk out of the fridge and the hanging chipped coffee cup off the wall. It just made it feel so inviting. They have the roasting going on out in the open so you can see what's up, smell beans and talk coffee with the other coffee nerds. We grabbed a couple of bags to bring home. Both smelled really unique and I am dying to put them in my mouth :) The coffee we tried when we were there was the Nicaragua. It was bright without being overly acidic and tasted like something you would want to drink with a good book and a cat in your lap. Think comfort food coffee. Third Coast Coffee is a shining example. From their modest storefront, you'd hardly expect to leave with cherished black gold in a cup, but that's precisely what you'll get. You may also come away with an thoughtful discussion, and make a friend or two, but that's just part of the total experience that Third Coast has to offer. They even gave my 6 year old son a lesson in coffee roasting on one visit, which not remotely the type of education you'll earn at your local Starbucks. I luxuriated in several of their outstanding coffees before landing on the El Salvador, which is an intoxicatingly deep and satin-smooth brew that sits on an entirely distinct, divine plane from other beans. No matter how challenging my day may look in the morning, just the thought of this coffee (freshly ground and paired with my Aeropress) is enough to put a spring in my step and throw a sanguine outlook on my day. If this all sounds like too much, then you probably just haven't had the chance for such an experience yet through Third Coast. I hope you do. UPDATE 1/2/13: I'm a scientist, so I love to experiment. I had read raves about super high-end "Bulletproof" Coffee, which seems to be almost universally lauded. Stuff costs $23 for 0.75 lb (with shipping). So I tried it ( using my Aeropress, of course). Unroasted green coffee beans at $5.50/lb. Roasted beans at $9/lb. The guy asked me what kind of coffee I like. I said: Funky, earthy, leathery, aged, monsooned. He then recommended the Ethiopian Sidamo dry-processed, which I grabbed 2 unroasted pounds of for a great price. They had some of it brewed up - it smelled and tasted like goat cheese - how's that for funky?! I love it. I also bought a half-pound of the roasted wet-processed Sidamo, which wasn't funky but had very bright notes, like eating ripe fruit - great stuff. While they don't have a huge selection, what they do have is top notch. It's worth a visit here to get the beans at a good discount. read more

TO MY HOUSTON PEEPS: I just drank some of the best coffee I've ever had! I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any means, but I do like good coffee. I usually stick to basic medium-roast blends, and not a fan of artificially flavored coffee. I recently heard good things about Austin's Third Coast Coffee, and you could get it at Whole Foods in Houston where I live. I finally found it at the Alabama/Kirby location in 12 ounce packages. Just by the look of the package, you could tell it was locally roasted and packaged. When I picked up a package, you could smell the wonderful aroma of the coffee beans through the package...it smelled like heaven! I looked on the bottom of the package and saw the coffee was roasted on July 23, 2013...and the date I was in Whole Foods was FOUR DAYS LATER...Saturday, July 27!! No wonder it smelled so fresh! I ended up purchasing the Columbia roast. On the package you will find a description of the specific coffee roast, the batch lot number and the actual farm in Columbia where it was grown. You can even trace your coffee on the Third Coast website. I only drink coffee in the morning, so I couldn't wait until the next morning (Sunday) to try it. Wow. This had to be the smoothest-tasting, well-balanced coffee I ever had! It was a true medium roast with a slight caramel, buttery taste that lingered on your taste buds after you drank it. And I don't have a fancy-schmancy ultra-expensive or exotic coffee maker or grinder. I have a ten year-old Krups ProAroma coffee maker, and a $20 Krups grinder. When using freshly ground coffee beans, I do use Melitta #4 super premium natural brown cone filters (instead of the Krups gold filter) that doesn't leave sediment at the bottom of the pot. The 12-ounce bag at Whole Foods sold for $12.49. But when you consider it was just roasted four days earlier (in Austin) and how wonderful it tasted, it was well worth it! The staff is super friendly and passionate about coffee while being entirely unpretentious. Third Coast Coffee is the best! A friend from work (Thanks Judy) turned me on to Third Coast. Finished the gift pound, then went to their South Congress location for more. It's addictive. They didn't have the coffee that I wanted available there, but there were plenty more to choose from. I bought a pound of Italian Roast, and a pound of Mexico beans. We were looking for something I would like, and they let me smell the Mexico beans. I stuck my head in the bucket (if that paints a weird picture, it was really over the bucket, not deep inside), and didn't want to take it out. It was a smell directly from heaven. Needless to say, both the Italian and Mexico beans are being thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. I recommend going by their store. Great people, great buckets. Their coffee is unbelievable. read more
