There are two reasons I came here: 1. It was relatively close to a friend I was visiting and the Arboretum which is where I needed to be. 2. They have goats here. Civil Goat is the genre of coffee shops that are secluded from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So many shops in Austin are located in districts that are busy and buzzing. The original Civil Goat is quiet and peaceful through the trees. Upon arrival, it looks like there's only 3 parking spots, but as you keep driving, there's a whole lot behind the shop for parking. It's not super expansive, but at 9:30 am on a Wednesday, I had no issue finding a spot. They have a large covered patio and a small interior shop. They have QR codes on tables to order on your phone and stand up kiosks for to go orders as well. You can also order inside from the barista, but I got a feeling they just prefer you order from the kiosk... I ordered a lavender latte that was delightful and warm. Very balanced in its flavors. It was served in a cute seafoam mug. My friend ordered a cappuccino that was served in frankly a cuter cup, so I was immediately jealous. I also ordered one of their specialty sandwiches called the Cuerney Sam with bacon, egg, American cheese, hot sauce (Cholula), and honey on a croissant. It was $12 which would have me on here complaining about SandFlation, but it was a hearty size and very well done. Nothing overpowered anything else, so the sandwich lived in harmony. I decided to order a second coffee to go. I got their Coco Capp with brown sugar and coconut syrup. They offer alternative milks of oat and almond free of charge, which is a huge W and something I don't see anywhere. It's a little out of the way for me, so I don't know how soon I'll return, but it made a quality impact on me and was floor raiser for my day. Plus there were goats! RIYL: Very civilized goats. Such a cute place. Love the amount of outdoor seating. The goats come and go but such a great experience! I ordered an iced cappuccino with oat milk and one pump of vanilla and two pumps of lavender, it was perfect! My friend ordered a regular cappuccino and it was so cute! The avocado toast with peas could have been salted a bit more. The $4 chia pudding is tiny. There is only one restroom so be ready for a line. Also, it's kind of sad that you can't order from a person only your phone or a kiosk. But overall a good experience. read more

As part of my austin adventures, I had first stopped at Civil Goat to get some light bites after hearing some great things from friends. Upon arrival, the indoor and outdoor seating areas were incredibly cute and spacious. It had taken us a few minutes to understand where to order, but once we did, everything was a breeze from there. I ordered a chia pudding and a cinnamon toast and honestly wasn't expecting such a small portion. I guess I should've made the connection when the chia pudding was $3. Despite its quantity, the taste was incredibly delicious and felt very fresh. The cinnamon toast on the other end was quite hard and tasted stale, nothing unique about it. The service honestly wasn't the best either as some of the employees had some kind of attitude. Those could've been because they were somewhat busy in the morning. After eating, we had walked around and saw some goats that they have on the property. The was pretty cool and I really did enjoy that. Overall, my experience was good.. I think next time when I'm back in Austin i'll be sure to give it a second chance! read more

Vibes, Butters the goat and his bestie, and a cozy setup - Civil Goat has the atmosphere. Their coffee can be a hit or miss (love their dirty chai, but their cappuccino is off in ratio so the espresso didn't shine) with their matcha special leaving me sad and $10 out on watery, low grade, separated "matcha" I had to throw out after two sips. An excellent lil cafe in the Cuernavaca neighborhood. There are very few coffee spots out this direction and it is always poppin at Civil Goat - TG they added extra space and parking in the last few years to accommodate the crowds. It would be awesome if they could extend opening hours for early birds and add a bit more signage about ordering & picking up from the patio. I hope they also continue featuring local art on their walls! We love their drip coffee and cappuccino, and have even purchased bags of their beans to enjoy at home. The baristas are great at their craft and always kill it with the latte art (minus the time I had a mediocre matcha latte). Food is solid but slow. My friend and I decided to visit to try out a new place. It's overall cute, especially with the goat, but it's a bit small. I got the seasonal rose matcha while my friend got a matcha latte with lavender. I thought both were okay, but my friend thought both were pleasant. It did take around 20-30 minutes for both of these, so the reviews about wait time unfortunately were true for our experience. My main issue was that I had ordered an açaí bowl that never arrived. We waited for over an hour assuming it would take a while considering the wait time for the matcha and slight rush, but then they started closing. At this point, we had to leave anyways, but it was unfortunate paying 30$ for two items and missing half of my order. 2/10 from me and 4/10 from my friend. read more

This place just gets better and better. I first reviewed civil goat about 3 years ago, and made my first return since moving out of state. The vibe inside is perfect for meeting people for a coffee or getting some writing done. Outside has been completely transformed into this huge gathering outdoor patio with TVs and plenty of room to work or hang. Makes me think Cuernavaca needs a local bar or brewery!!! read more

Whilst the coffee is/was actually good, the service and staff attitude sucks. I ordered a gluten free item; after my friends stuff arrived and was eaten (waiting 25 minutes) I asked for an ETA. Some time later a kitchen person appeared; apparently the bread was defrosting, and he had no ETA. I asked them to change to normal bread - I don't get to eat, but my kid would - and plz bring it asap. 10 minutes later, I ask for an ETA - the guy refunded me, but no ETA, no checking with the kitchen. Another 10 minutes.....and I ask for an ETA...the guy says "from a business point of view, I've done what I can". He eventually went and checked, and my food was there ready to go. To be clear - "from a business point of view, I've done what I can" - lol smh: I never asked or wanted a refund - I just wanted what I payed for, and an ETA. These folks need training. We arrived at Civil Goat a little after 11 am. It was difficult to find a parking spot but we found one! The goats were in the shaded areas of their pen since it was hot. Immediately upon entering we were told to order at our table. When we said we were paying with cash we got a sort of irritated look. I went ahead and ordered at the table and paid by card at table to not be a "pain". ***BE WARNED, they will charge you a 16% "wellness charge" on top of the steep prices.*** They do bring your food and drink to the table but you have to bus your own tables. It's not full service so not sure why we have to pay this fee... My sister accidentally ordered a hot drink instead of iced and the baristas acted like it was such a huge inconvenience to remake it. Then, she received her sandwich with a hair. We asked to have it remade. She happened to walk in to grab a spoon while they were talking crap about her. They have quite a bit of outdoor seating. Indoor seating is limited and this Texas weather is HOT. The food was good but I just can't deal with terrible service. We are not locals, but I definitely wouldn't come back. read more

We came to Civil Goat for the comedy night after seeing it marketed as family-friendly. We brought our family, and there were at least two other families there--including kids around 14 to 16 years old. What happened next was deeply uncomfortable. Some of the comics went into clearly adult material, including sexual jokes about other families in the room. At one point, a dad had to interrupt a comic and say, my son is here, just to shut down a completely inappropriate bit. I've been to comedy clubs across the country--from NYC to LA, big venues to hole-in-the-wall shows. I love stand-up. I've performed improv. I know comics personally. I'm not easily offended. But this wasn't edgy or clever--it was just a total misread of the room. If you're going to promote a show as family-friendly, vet your lineup accordingly. If you're not going to do that, then label it 18+ and set the right expectations. Comedy thrives when it meets the moment. But trapping families in a small room with tone-deaf material and no warning isn't edgy--it's careless. Civil Goat, please do better. read more

What a great vibe and cold brew coffee at the Civil Goat!! I just dropped in to have a quick mtg to exchange ACL tickets, and Cam served up a fantastic cold brew with oat milk! The outdoor seating is large and there is a huge covered patio with four TV screens and music! I'm coming back to go through their menu! Found Civil Goat when in Bee Caves and looking for a place to kick some time with a tasty caffeinated bev before going to an office open house, which would not have tasty caffeine. It was chilly outside, so we were glad to land a couple of seats inside. Was busy, but wasn't too loud. Score! I had a latte with honey and, to quote Agent Cooper, it was "a damn fine cup of coffee!" Technically, it was espresso, but when you have a heavenly sip, it calls on your soul to draw a recognizable pop culture quote from your psyche to express the joy you feel. It was one of the best darn good belly-warming, tastebud tickling lattes I've had in ages. Lastly, I had to go outside to say hi to the civil goat mascot, Butters the Pygmy goat, before leaving. There were two goats, but one was staying inside the little goat shed. The one outside looked like Butters, but was missing a horn. Regardless, he was, indeed, civil that day. Before the self-ordering system, it used to take a very long time for the food to come out, but their new system seems to speed things up. Seems like every where we go these days -it's all through the iPads/kiosks. If I want a person to give customer service I have to sit at the two seater bar! They charge a "wellness fee" & have the nerve to ask for a tip!! A tip? For what ? I just put in the order myself - I have clean up myself. I have to get my own water- like there is ZERO customer service! Also breakfast sandwiches are priced OUTRAGEOUSLY! For an open face slice of bread w/ ONE EGG, one skimpy slice of bacon & some honey $14! C'mon on now! AND their food isn't cooked - it's all warmed up in a rolling toaster. All croissants are bought at Costco's. Eggs are cooked when placed in the toaster. Only can get them sunny side up. (Makes sense now) So there isn't no actual cooking of any food- just warming up! This is a cute little shop with a goat paddock in the back and nice looking drinks. However, the service is rude and the coffee was quite weak. On top of that, they charge a 16% wellness fee which I have never heard of and they provided no explanation. I tried to order at the counter but they told me to go to a table and order from my phone. Even though the order is by the table number, they will not bring it to you, which still means a trip to the counter. I ordered an extra shot in the cappuccino, but it hardly tasted like any coffee, just coffee scented milk. The mocha was just warm chocolate milk. I ordered a 12 oz milk for my daughter, but they only gave me 8 oz. When I asked about the rest, they said that's just how they pour a 12 oz, only 2/3s of the way up. read more

Food was amazing and I love the atmosphere but the service and wait time was too long. 40 minutes for a cold brew and an hour for an açaí bowl. You order from a screen that everyone touches and there's no hand sanitizer next to it. They auction off your food and you have to flag the waiter down. They should just hand out numbers. This week I walked into civil goat to grab a to go order and stood at the counter next to 3 employees and zero other customers to be waited on other than me. This local gem surprised me over and over with the quality of each dish and drink. Somehow they can make the most simple dishes with perfectly balanced flavors. I never really ate scrambled eggs but the Soft Scramble keeps me coming back. They eggs are cheesy but I don't think they have any cheese? I've tried recreating the dish at home but it's just not the same. Notably, the açaí bowls are the best I've had. They have a great dog- friendly covered and uncovered patio area. Of course, the stars of the cafe are the gentile Billy goats out back. WiFi is fast. Although, you'll notice most people who come here are socializing with each other. read more

I'm incredibly disappointed. I've been a loyal customer at Civil Goat for years, but after today's experience, I won't be returning. I drove 45 minutes with my kids to meet a friend for lunch. They've implemented a new system where you can no longer order at the register--you have to use the app. I placed our order and we sat down to wait. After 30 minutes, we still hadn't received our coffee. Concerned that our order hadn't gone through, I asked my kids to check with the barista. She snapped at them, saying they were just showing a screenshot and she needed an order number. So I went up myself and asked if she could confirm our order. She asked for my name, and when I gave it to her, she replied--rudely--that they were "backed up" and it would be at least a 45-minute wait. That alone is unacceptable. If the wait time is that long, customers deserve to be notified before placing an order. We continued waiting in a hot, poorly air-conditioned space with my kids complaining about being hungry. Another 30 minutes passed before they slowly began bringing out two of the meals. Fifteen more minutes passed before the next two arrived. At this point, we had been waiting patiently for nearly an hour. We were still missing one item. When I mentioned this, the barista went to the back and finally brought it out. However, the dish had bacon on it--which we don't eat due to religious reasons. I pointed this out, and instead of offering a simple apology, she gave me attitude and said, "You didn't ask for it without bacon, and we're backed up. I don't know if we have time to remake it." By then, I was deeply frustrated. Whether the mistake was mine or theirs, we had waited over an hour, and the order still wasn't right. I explained that I had a religious dietary restriction and that I couldn't eat pork. Her response was both dismissive and unkind. She said, "I don't know you well enough to know your limitations," then begrudgingly offered to remake it--still without an apology. When she returned with the corrected item, her attitude made it clear that customer service was not a priority. As a business owner myself (I run two Pilates studios), I understand being understaffed or overwhelmed. But that's never an excuse to treat customers with rudeness or disregard. A simple apology and a little empathy would have gone a long way. Instead, the entire experience--from poor communication and excessive wait times to the dismissive attitude--was deeply disappointing. I won't be returning, and I hope Civil Goat reevaluates how they handle customer service during busy times. If you're growing as a business, how you treat people matters more than ever. read more

Went in on a beautiful Sunday morning and the place was hopping!! It was difficult to find a seat but we managed to snag one at the front bar. Ordering was easy enough but the menu was only at the front so couldn't think ahead on what to order. Baristas were busy but did an excellent job on our drinks. I got a hot mocha and my husband got a hot cappuccino. Both were well balanced and great milk texture. Thoroughly enjoyed. The goats were fun to see as well! read more

What a bummer of an experience. Used to be a great spot. Staff was unpleasant and unhelpful. We ordered a sandwich for my 2 year old son, not realizing they doused it in hot sauce (user error, we recognize). When it came over, we couldn't give it to him and as a meltdown began we asked one of the staff if they could possibly remake it for us. They said no. Then we asked if they could even just scramble up a plain egg for him. They said no. We left with a hungry, upset family and won't be back. The unfortunate thing is for the cost of one scrambled egg they could have gained hundreds in repeat business. While we recognize we overlooked the hot sauce option on the menu, most restaurants are understanding enough (especially when they see a crying young child) to help out with a small ask. It's the Texas way to be kind and help a neighbor. To add to it, you can only order on an app which is glitchy, you can't ask questions about menu items easily, they add an automatic surcharge and don't offer personalized service, and you can't easily get items you might need as there's never any servers easily accessible. read more

Civil Goat is one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. This particular location actually has a goat you can watch while you have your coffee! Their matcha is to die for, truly one of the best I've had. I usually get the smashed avocado for breakfast & it hits every single time. The oats are delicious as well. Staff is quick to get your order out to you & helpful with any questions you may have. The outside seating has a covered & an uncovered portion. As a lifelong bathroom connoisseur, I regret to inform you that while the coffee may fuel your day, the bathroom here will flush your hopes down the drain. Upon entering, I was greeted by the sight of a toilet seat that seemed more determined to stay down than a cat refusing to be picked up. For those of us who prefer to stand and aim, it felt like a personal betrayal. I battled it for a good minute--trying to lift, nudge, and finally negotiate--but the seat wouldn't stay up. I've never felt more defeated in my life. Then came the second blow: the soap dispenser. Spoiler alert--it was as empty as my soul after that toilet seat fiasco. I pressed it once, twice, ten times--hoping to get even a whiff of soap. Nada. It was like the final insult to injury, leaving me to rinse my hands with just water and shame. Legit one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. I love their Guadalupe location, but this one is even better. It's really aesthetic and comfy, and their food and coffee is consistently solid. Their avocado toast, while expensive for $9, is delicious, and their acai bowls and egg/arugula salad/avocado plate are also delicious. I would prefer to go to this location to study and sit because it's a lot more comfortable and open, and Butters the goat is at this location. My friend goes to CGC every Sunday with her teenage daughter and now I know why. This neighborhood coffee shop is a hidden gem. While nowhere near my house it was worth the drive. There is limited parking out front but there is a connected parking lot so it was easy to find a spot. There is a covered little side patio and a place for your dog to run around. There is actually a goat on premises but he/she wasn't there today. Hopefully next time I get a chance to see the goat. :) I ordered a cappuccino and it was worth the wait. It arrived in a beautiful little pottery mug and saucer and the the design on top was lovely. My friend and I sat at a low table to chat and catch up, while her two kids sat at a high top table at the window. I also ordered the scramble and it was delicious. The eggs were light and fluffy. It came with a yummy sausage/potato hash and a little side salad with arugula. Ahhhh- arugula! There were several people enjoying their coffee with friends and several more working on laptops.
