But thanks to Andrew P on Yelp and his recommendation for the coffee at Icons I have defied all travel conventions and actually found a delightful coffee shop in an airport. I always thought of Icons as the place to get that last minute true blue SA gift for a friend or family member landing in Adelaide or at the other end of your journey. What better way to convince others that Adelaide isn't that bad by bribing them with Haighs, Fruchocs, Maggie Beer sauces and SA wine packs right? They certainly make the most of monopoly here though and I've always spent a fair bit of money here on gifts that I've never really noticed the cafe and coffee here until now... It was one rainy day in Adelaide, I was heading to Brisbane and had this place on my list to try to compare with Cibo (which I have always thought was the best of all evils available if you are in need for a non-alcoholic pick-me up in the airport). So what does one do when excitedly waiting to try airport coffee? Get to the airport an extra hour early to give this place a try of course! Well it lived up to the hype and my $3.90 Campos coffee was strong, hot and and didn't taste like a MYO pod blend or a burnt mess in a cup. Bravo Icons for not just being a great gift shop but also for being the best coffee shop in the airport now too!

You can sample a few of the smaller boutique breweries beers here. All around $8 a bottle which isn't a ridiculous mark up. They also have a huge selection of SA wines, Udder Delights Cheeses and Scala Bread. A winning trio for a delayed flight. They also have Campos coffee, friands, muffins and banana bread( only $5, toasted and with butter, slightly sweet though)! And if you forgot a present from home or have a soft spot for Haighs, they got you covered there too! Stop in and drink and wait at Icons, it's worth it. (That's what I would say if I was their slogan)

Not surprisingly, they also have German beer available, though I should point out that the German Beer is only from a single brewery, and also seems to be much more crafty than the ones at the other pubs. Still, this is a pretty cool pub with a great atmosphere, and the staff are really nice as well.

Later in the day, also walked into the hahndorf inn pub part for a drink and quick bite before catching the metro bus back to the city. Split a beer tasting flight with my husband and the pretzel/2 dips appetizer. Delicious pretzel with a red pepper dip and then some type of rocket/bean dip. The flight showcased 4 classic German beers. They were mostly light, crisp, and refreshing with the exception of a darker ale. Nice spot to grab a beer and bite to eat if you like German pub fare.

I assume the patrons didn't know they would be waiting over an hour for their food. Oh! And the bathroom?! Filthy! You can tell a lot by an establishment by how they keep their bathroom, and the bathroom was directly next to the dirty dishes pile up. I don't know about you, but I want nothing to do with a restaurant that has dishes, clean or dirty, near the toilet!! Yuk!! Avoid this place if you want good food, good service, and don't want to get sick!

While at first glance it may appear that this is a vegetarian/vegan cafe, you can get chicken, eggs and haloumi added to dishes so don't fear bringing your meat-o-saur friends with you. I had the daily salad plate and added in haloumi thinking that I'd need something a bit more that roughage. I shouldn't have worried though as the salad itself was generous and filling with a good mix of green, grains and carbs. Simple, yet delicious, the haloumi was very salty (I assume it wasn't rinsed) and actually didn't add anything to the salad. I should have gone without as I certainly wasn't hungry after polishing off the entire plate of salad. If you fancy just popping in for morning or afternoon tea, get stuck in to the juices or the cherry iced tea. Tea fiends will love that their brew it is served either in a mug or in a pot, depending on how much tea they're in the mood for.

Ask the staff to make up a juice of the day for you to take away after your meal for a perfect pick me up. My favourite they have made so far is the watermelon, orange and mint on a hot summers day! Meals are huge and very well priced, leaving you stuffed but not feeling guilty because you've probably just consumed double the serving of fruit and veg you required in the one meal. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're in a rush, but I would highly recommend taking a meeting, a special brekky with a friend or a group and sit back and relax gazing out onto Rymill Park for the morning/afternoon.

This is really awesome for this end of town as there is not another bottleo that offers this big of a range. Next stop for crafties would be closer to town. Correct me if I am wrong! All of these bottle shops are Australian owned and are connected to a pub so it's no like a freestanding Fassina, Dan Murphy's or a BWS. What I like about it besides being Aussie owned, is the name is so apt and the logo is very outback ocker displaying a camel and I think their prices are not too bad. They also run several competitions and offer a discount card where points can be earned towards a reduction on normal prices. Once you drive in there are lanes for express and browsing, as there's nothing worse than being stuck behind a dawdler especially when you're late for a party and all you want is a slab and get the hell out of there! Thirsty Camels have sprung up everywhere and there are many locations throughout South Australia, so have a look in the White Pages or go online to find where they are and support an Australian owned business. Did you know the Highway Inn had the 'world's' first drive through bottle shop! How's that for trivia. Adelaide really was forward in their thinking at the time anyway.

I saw a picture of the gin cured trout and knew that was what I had to order before I arrived. It was just so pretty! I was right, it was almost to pretty to eat. I couldn't bare digging into it without taking a few snaps. The trout was cured well. I feel like it could have been cured a little longer to have a deeper flavour. Maybe more salt and sugar was needed. But, that does not mean that it was not tasty! It was really lovely. The egg was poached well, crème fraîche was a great edition and lifted the dish. An added surprise was the sea greens. I really loved them. I think that not many people are used to them, but they are really tasty. The carrots were nice, but felt a little out of place. I think what the dish needed was a sauce. The crème fraîche was great, but something with a deeper flavour or seasoning. The rest of the menu looked great! I look forward to test more items. In fact, be sure to try out the coffee. I think we may have another great coffee destination in Adelaide. They offer a couple of filter options and cold drip. I have had some of their beers before, namely because I wandered into a bottle shop, but it was great to actually visit the brewery itself. Yeah, the beers are pretty awesome, and the service wasn't bad at all. It may be a bit of a trek to get to, but it is definitely worth it.
