The Thistle, in Cody Wyoming is a really awesome store. My store is like this- I was shopping for a present for my anniversary. I went in The Thistle and was immediately greeted by the store owner. She had asked me if I was looking for anything in specific. I had stated I was looking for an anniversary gift. She kindly showed me to the cards. She also stated if there was not anything on the rack that I liked, she would bring out some more cards that she had in the back of the storage room. How kind first of all ~ and for her to go to that trouble for some complete stranger, was really top notch for me. So, I found my card, without her having to go to the back room. Then I decided to look for a gift. I found a funny little beer opener key chain that said something on it like "Marriage is a cheap way to get your laundry done." I thought that was funny and I like funny gifts, so I was going to buy it for my husband for our anniversary. Some how, I put it in my pocket. Then I was looking around some more, and I didn't find anything else. I went to the counter and bought 3 cards. She was such a kind lady - and I went out the door, thinking I have not had such a kind experience in a shop in a long, long time. So thank you! So, cut to me going to Walmart and running into a friend. I had my hands full and put my things in her cart. I went to give her a hug and got poked by something in my pants pocket. I put my hand in, and there was the key chain that I wanted to buy, but accidentally left the store without paying....I screamed in Walmart and said to my friend - OMG - I left The Thistle without paying for this keychain! Then another friend walked by and said "I knew you were a shop lifter! LOL!" So I hurried out the checkout line of Walmart and headed straight to the Thistle. I walked in and told the lady about my experience - and she started laughing! She told me one of her life stories and we both had a good laugh. Then, she told me that I could keep the keychain, because of my honesty! Can you believe it! How kind was that! I tell you, in this day and age, she could of had me arrested, but with her heart being so kind, she knew that I was only trying to do the right thing. I've been to Cody many times, but never to this store before. I'll might go back to it next time I'm there, but from someone who owns their own business, some friendly advice: 1)You want to make sure you have great customer service, because you're already at a disadvantage by not being on the main street. 2) If you close at 5, you need to close and lock the door, even if you still have customers in the store. That way, it's obvious you're closed. 3) If you don't close the door and a customer comes in at 5:10, guess what, you're still open. If you tell that person you're closed, that doesn't make a very good first impression. Neither does following them out into the street and asking if there was something specific they wanted. No, they wanted to browse and possibly purchase something from a store they'd never been in before, but now they're annoyed, might not come back, and worst of all for you, they might tell others about their negative experience. 4) You need to find some way to make your store accessible to people with physical challenges. 5) I'm very familiar with Cody. I ate in a restaurant today and purchased items from two stores, one I was familiar with and one new to me. The restaurant and the new store were on the main street; the other store was not. I hope next time I'm in Cody, you're still there. I'd like to give you a second chance. Your store, what I saw of it, had attractive displays and sells things I'm interested in buying.
