I think Little Free Libraries are a fabulous way to encourage reading and literacy. I've seen…read morehundreds of them around the USA and around the world. This one in Meyer Park near the playground is in good shape. It appears to be a repurposed newspaper dispenser though it needs some attention. The "window" is no longer attached and would not protect the books inside from rain. The library is also empty. Someone has put some love into this. Now it just needs books. It was a clever idea to repurpose a hard plastic paper box, for lots of reasons, and I will be contributing and visiting it in the future. Todd H. On the second floor are rooms where they have crafts and other meetings.. I have been to the craft classes and they are wonderful and the librarian who teaches them is awesome ..She is so helpful, friendly and makes the classes a fun time.. They have a dept that helps you with tracing your ancestry and I need to fill those papers out again .. You can renew your books online and reserve books.. By the return book window there is a memorial garden where people who paint rocks can place them in memory of loved ones.. It is really a cool idea and lots of rocks there.. I paint rocks so a few of mine are there.. They also have a lot of videos and cds and a cute childrens section.. Five stars I love this library

We like this library a lot. It's got a decent sized children's section, a large collection of dvds,…read moreaudiobooks, and a large selection of books on the second floor - don't miss that! They also have meeting rooms and a large variety of activities. It's kind of sad that they had to cut back hours, so some days of the week they open later. But Such is the state of our world now. The librarians are helpful and it's nice that you can check out your own books without waiting in line. Four stars.

Our recent RV trip had us staying here for three nights and it was definitely a little bitter sweet when we broke camp and headed home after enjoying a month long trip on the road but there's no doubt we'll be back hopefully for a longer stay next time. There's so much to see and do in and around the area, the beaches are gorgeous and there's some pretty good food options as well. I was a little taken back by the amount of growth this area has seen in the past 5 years or so I guess everyone is trying to get their little piece of paradise we are seeing similar migration in Florida hopefully the vibe here never changes...

At the…read moresouthernmost point (or close to it) in Alabama, Gulf Shores is on the barrier island and so it benefits/suffers from the influx of beach goers, retirees and other transients who enjoy the warmer weather but don't want to go to Florida or Texas. Gulf Shores has managed to get slammed by a bunch of hurricanes in the last couple of years (Ivan, Katrina, Sally) but on my visit, I didn't notice any particular damage. The beach is lovely and the people are friendly. Expect to see lots of businesses catering to the beach and the tourists. Mini golf, ice cream, glossy-menu seafood restaurants and such. But if you get off the beaten track, you'll find proper locals who are happy to see you. And don't miss out on meeting up with Barrett O. He's "Mister Yelp Gulf Shores" for sure! It was on that sail that I discovered Pirates Cove, home of the cheeseburger in paradise so that's one thing that's kept me coming back :-) Since retiring in the area I've discovered a lot more than the beautiful scenery and burgers but first a little history. The Town of Elberta is a small, historically agricultural community, situated 25 minutes from the Alabama Gulf Coast, 35 minutes from historic downtown Pensacola, FL and 45 minutes from Mobile. The first settlers arrived here in 1904 and the community was founded by farmers who had immigrate from Germany. I wasn't sure about the phrase on their welcome sign "für das gut leben" so I asked my dear Düsseldorf friend, Klaus-Dieter who tells me the best interpretation is "For the good life". In the 1930s through the 1940s, the town boasted a farmer's hall where dancing and singing were enjoyed, a hotel, and a movie theatre, as well as a butcher shop, grocery and drug store. Many of the residents spoke German, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church offered German-language services until 1976. Current the latest census shows fewer than 1500 residents and I've come to realize that it's a warm and friendly place that's all about community. One great example is the support the town's volunteer fire department gets with the Elberta German Sausage Festival which was started in the mid-1970s. I attend every one of them that's held the last weekend of March and the last weekend of October and features polka music, Elberta German sausage Sausage, and 250 arts and crafts vendors with over 40,000 visitors during the fall festival alone. It's a good time for a great cause. There's only a couple stop lights but there's a lot more stuff here than the size might indicate. Aside from the aforementioned Pirates Cove, there's Bamahenge, Baldwin County Heritage Museum, Lady in the Lake, a golf course, as well as locally owned and operated shops and restaurants like the Roadkill Cafe. It's also where we go to our meetings and events at Amvets. Bottom line: You can spend your days picking fresh berries at Hillcrest Farm or sampling the homemade cheese at Sweet Home Farm but don't forget Bamahenge and those cheeseburgers, it's paradise indeed.
