The charcuterie board was very tasty and we loved the dragon cheese (I forget the full name of it lol). We liked the other two cheeses as well, especially when one of them warmed to room tamp. The bread was good and the salami was very tasty. I liked the spicy one the most! The atmosphere was super nice and tavern like, I know they have live music which is cool. Great ambiance and live music from AmyNoel. My mom and I stopped in for "girls night" and really enjoyed the laid back feel. We enjoyed their wines and doing a cheese + meat charcuterie board was the perfect light dinner. We would definitely come back again especially for live music on Saturdays. This winery was how we treated ourselves after a good hike at General Butler. There's so many perks to this place, such as: - they are open until 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays - in downtown so super easy to access and walk to - tastings are free! - big, cozy space to hang out in I have been to a hundred wineries, but I have to say that this one had some of the most unique wines that I've tasted. They have a drier selection - we tasted some with caramel notes, a dry version of a Niagara, and a spicier wine, to name a few. The bartender working during our tasting was wonderful. He would tell us the origin and story of each wine, and had me very interested to hear about what the next one would be like. The bottles ran roughly in the $15-20 price range, so not too bad. Quick and dirty: Started as 5 stars but service after our tasting was lacking. (3.5 true rating) Slow and clean: My forever favorite weekend activity is a long hike followed by day drinking. So, after deciding that it was time to return to Clifty Falls for some nature, we decided to actually go in to Madison and see what it was all about...and get in some day drinking. We got a good 7+ hike in and then head down to the main street to find parking in between the two in-town wineries (so we could walk to both without having to move the car). A couple blocks off the main drag, Thomas Family Winery is in a charming building near to the river. It has a cozy, bistro-like, welcoming atmosphere inside, and a cute little patio out to the side. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately and invited to sidle up at the small tasting bar with a group that had only just started their experience. It was a bit crowded, but I would have been cranky if I had had to wait for them to finish, when they were only on the first pour. What is wonderful (and dangerous) is that many wine tastings in Indiana are FREE and you are welcome to try any number of their offerings...up to and including ALL. So having a DD or a plan to eat a big meal after a couple tastings would be a good idea. Thankfully, TFW has a manageable list of wines, number-wise. Our tasting experience was WONDERFUL. The woman acting as tasting host was friendly and fun, full of information, and able to keep things moving. If we had left after the tasting, this review would be sitting pretty at 5 stars. But we enjoyed ourselves so much and liked some of the wines we tried, that with the opportunity to build-your-own charcuterie board...we decided we wanted to sit for a bit and have a glass of wine and some cheese before moving on. This is where service fell through. The other woman working on this day seemed to be responsible for serving the folks sitting at tables wanting to eat and drink and stay a while. We specifically asked if there was table service, and if that table service extended to the outdoor seating area. We were told "yes" and that someone would come to our table in no time. Instead, we sat for quite some time, with not a soul coming outside. Until another couple came out on to the patio to sit down. Great, we thought. With two groups out here, they are bound to come serve us in no time! Wrong. Within a few minutes, their glasses of wine were brought out to them. I guess they ordered at the tasting bar? Then the server took their order for a charcuterie board. I honestly thought she would then come over to us to at least establish contact with our table. I turned around to try and get her attention via polite eye contact and a non-rude indication that we see you, and we are ready to order. Instead...she didn't look over to us at all and went inside. They cut the cheese to order for the BYO-charcuterie, so it took a little longer than one might expect for these orders to come out. But then, I was SURE that once the other table had their cheese delivered, we would be approached and be able to place our order. Instead...again...she never even looked over at our table and went back inside. Fine. My Fella was still interested in getting a glass of one of their wines, and we had our heart set on a couple of the cheeses they had to offer. So we went inside to get a seat and try and get some service in there. A plan that *eventually* worked, but again a table that seated themselves long after us got served first. It left a very sour taste in my mouth. I would have been more than ok with slower service, but we almost walked out without anything because we were completely ignored. Eventually we got to enjoy a glass of wine each and some cheese and crackers. But after such a great tasting experience, the rest of our visit left a lot to be desired and really left us disappointed. Go for a tasting. But if you want anything beyond that...buy what you want, to go. And then go. read more

I visited this winery with a friend after hiking at Clifty Falls. We were late to join, with tastings starting with informal groups are gathered. Both times I have been here, the owner has done the tastings himself. It appears his wife and co-owner manages guests that are hanging out and food. Anyway, we were disappointed to miss 2 whites and the ciders but happy to catch most of the tasting. We had a great experience! Each tasting came with a description and suggestions for pairing. Questions were answered thoroughly. It's obvious there's a lot of passion for wine making and interest in sharing with others. After the flight, we asked about a couple of the wines we missed and were given tastings of those, too! This place was our best tasting experience for the day. The choose your own charcuterie includes generous portions-especially for the cheeses-and can include your choice of one of the breads baked onsite. If you're in Madison for a friends weekend or hiking nearby, do yourself a favor and stop in for a (free) tasting then get yourself a glass of your favorite wine or cider and build a charcuterie board with your friends (or for yourself if you're hungry!) to enjoy. read more

We have been coming to Thomas Family Winery for the last 6-7 years. The wine is great and Steve and Elizabeth give the most informational tastings I've experienced. It's no frills, come in, do a tasting, buy a bottle or two and sit and enjoy a meat and cheese plate with their in-house baked rustic breads. After already visiting the other winery in town I didn't have super high expectations for this winery. Was I wrong! This place stepped up their game. A charming atmosphere with music (and live music some nights too!) and a fireplace and lots of seating to enjoy your drink. Normally, they offer fresh bread varieties (I wish I could have tried) but it was so cold the outside oven wouldn't get hot enough, cant blame them for that. They offer a variety of meats & cheeses for nibbling on while you sip your wine too. Different from the other winery they specialize is dry wine and I was thrilled. We tried a bunch of them and even a cider and meade. Ended up with multiple bottles of wine and cider to go and even enjoyed a glass of wine after our free tasting. We visited in the afternoon and ended up coming back at night since they were supposed to have a jazz musician. He ended up cancelling last minute but we got to know the owners and had some wine with them and it was a delight! Great hospitality! read more

My girlfriend and I have been there at least once a year for the past 5 years, always an enjoyable place to go. We always get the wine that is named "Saks." We went there a couple months ago on a Saturday afternoon and it was closed, I don't know why. Went there again today on a Saturday afternoon and it was almost empty. Ordered a bottle of Saks and a charcuterie board. We were told by the guy that they didn't have anything prepared. Gave the excuse that someone didn't show up. Ok, we got some bread, instead. Asked if we could get the bread heated and the guy put it in the microwave. How do you microwave bread and bring it out cold? It was still good, but cold. We both took a sip of wine and looked at each other with the same look. She said, "does this taste right?" I said, "no, it tastes old." I took the bottle up to the counter and told the guy that the wine wasn't good. He said, and I quote, "The cash register would beg to differ." Needless to say, we did not enjoy our experience in an empty winery with old wine. We went down the road to another winery and I will give my review on that one (Lanthier) next. If I would have given this a place a review a few years ago, it would have been at least a 4 star. read more

My lovely wife and I spent an entire Sunday afternoon here and had a great time. You can do a tasting of all their wines and ciders for free to see what you like, then order by the bottle or glass and lounge either inside or out on the patio. The Native American Blush is reason enough to visit, IMO - it is a well-balanced blend of Concord and Niagara grapes that I haven't seen available anywhere else. Their charcuterie boards are truly top notch also - they have a wide variety of gourmet / rare cheeses to choose from at reasonable prices. We would definitely visit again. read more

This spot is a jewel of the town. The ambience is quaint, reminds me of small, rural pubs and tasting rooms I've come across in Europe. The owners are almost always there, and the staff are attentive, funny, and make you feel right at home. Local and regional music talent play every Saturday night, Americana, Celtic, Irish are popular genres. Friday nights are typically open mic night. They also support area artists by exhibiting works of art, which rotate out every month or so. They have a modest selection of wines, their sweetest being the Native American Blush, which is what I typically get. I'm not as familiar with their other wines. They also carry a hard cider, for those who may not be in to wine, which is a popular choice for many. I most recently had a seasonal cider they offered called the Scrumby, made with cherries from Michigan I believe. It was delicious, had a slight tartness about it which I liked. Their breads are made fresh. And they have some of the best selection of cheeses, which change frequently along with the seasons. There is outdoor seating in the warmer months, and they often play host to a myriad of celebrations and activities encouraging patrons to participate...toga night, steampunk, hot and fiery foods, a large Halloween party, among others. read more

Came in for late afternoon wine tasting. End up having the Niagara and the white sangria. Both very good. The owner was kind & spent some time talking to us about the making of the Wine and that they made their own breads. We had the semolina bread loaf with a charcuterie tray of meats and cheeses. One of the Cheese's very Welsh like but made here in Indiana all or very good. Nice atmosphere more like a pub than a winery but great place to visit nice Garden in the back. We will come back again sometime and we even end up bringing home a couple bottles of the white Niagara. Liked it very much because it's hard to find a good Niagara wine that's not overly sweet. read more

The Thomas family winery is such a great spot in a nice town. If you are looking for a nice spot on the Indiana Wine Trail this is a great stop! The wines are not super sweet so if you enjoy wines of a more dry nature this is a great spot! Even the "sweeter" wines are only semi-sweet. It was our first trip to Madison so we were on a mission to find the best spots in town. We ran into a local downtown and she recommended Thomas Family Winery so of course we had to check it out! The building is off the Main Street toward the water and it is just wonderful. Cute, cozy and inviting. We have visited tons of wineries during our travels and this one has to be the most unique. The decor was fantastic - the best Halloween decor I have ever seen! Cindie Vanderbur's art was fabulous - a series featuring characters from some of the best horror films! The outdoor space was large and peaceful. We decided to do the tasting because we had never been here before. All their wines and ciders are really unique and not the usual sugar bombs (although I enjoy those once in a while as well ;) ). The recipes hearken back to an era when settlers were first coming to America - ciders made with crab apples and barrel aging the wines...safe drinking water was hard to find back then so distilling was the way to go! Everything we tasted came with a beautifully told story by the owner herself. After sampling, we each got a full glass of wine and cider and the owner offered to put together a meat and cheese plate that would compliment our drinks. We were not one bit disappointed! The warm (and in-house baked) bread was wonderful with the smoked duck, salami, and various cheeses. We were in heaven! I came here with my boyfriend tonight and I really enjoyed my experience here. It was my first time going to a winery and I loved how cozy, intimate, and homey the atmosphere was inside. It gave cottage-like energy with lots of dark wood and comfortable seating. It seems like a very sociable place where you can go and mingle with people you don't know or choose to focus on being with your party. My boyfriend got a hard cider and I got a glass of the Niagra. I am newer to the alcohol scene (I'm only 22 so not an experienced drinker), but this was perhaps the best wine that I have tasted. It smelled very fruity and it was incredibly smooth. I had my boyfriend try it and it was the first white wine that he has ever liked. The person who was working the bar was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly very passionate about the business. We also ordered a charcuterie board for 2 and it was reasonably priced with a wonderful selection. We ended up getting extra bread with it because I am more of a focaccia person while my boyfriend prefers sourdough and they both were divine. You can tell it was made with a lot of love and care - they truly have mastered the recipe. The focaccia was very moist which is very difficult to find and the sourdough had a wonderful bite and flavor to it. Both breads were very crusty on the outside and deliciously moist on the inside. We ended up buying another loaf of the sourdough to take home with us back to Ohio. The cheeses were also quite excellent - my favorites were the sheep milk cheese and the Irish cheddar. My husband and I are still discussing our disappointment with our experience at this winery last night. As soon as we walked in, my husband was looking around to see where he was wanting to sit for the evening... (since social distancing is now a solid game changer as far as bar seating etc) and with them having live music for the evening, we were hoping to have gotten there early enough to have gotten a table for our anniversary evening! Then we were literally barked at by the man behind the tasting bar " hold on, have you been here before, do you know what you're doing?" Which, obviously caught us both a little offguard. We thought that we were going to secure a place to sit for the evening, and then sit down for a tasting. He quickly cleared that up for us as well. Since they had live music that evening, he didn't want to do tastings, because of limited staff. My husband explained that we are new to the wine world, and this was our fourth winery experience. Which, only seemed to irritate him more because we didn't know how to answer the first 3 or 4 questions he asked us. To make a long story short, by the time he was done with us, the inside table that we wanted had of course been taken, we went outside for a bit but it was really cold, and they didn't have any gas for their heaters. So, we ended up coming inside again and sitting at the bar which was not very comfortable for a long period of time. So we ended up leaving after a short while. Now that we have talked about it the next morning, instead of staying because we didn't want to be rude, we should've just left because he was very rude and unwelcoming. read more

Lovely winery nestled into Madison. We stopped in for samplings and delighted by the experience. Tasting was more of walk through all of their ciders and wines. Great explanation on what cider is and how it is different from beer and wine. They had two offerings that were better than expected. For wines, they encourage you to try them all, even if you don't like something. Our staff member was very knowledgeable about the wines. Her descriptions were on point. One wine she noted smelled overly sweet, but don't let it fool you. The wine is dry. She was right. The building is very old world style. They offer a great patio option and a bakery. One of two wineries in Madison and a solid choice for tasting and atmosphere. Great outdoor seating and some unique outdoor items/experiences that you wouldn't expect; wood fire brick oven, smoke shop, live music patio and an artist painting a canvas in the courtyard. On a Tuesday afternoon in January, I was the only visitor. Steve was very enthusiastic about his wine and went into great detail about each ones origins. I tasted most of the current offerings and purchased six bottles. I also had a glass of the Rio Red 2010 and some cheese and salami - Steve's choice. One of the cheeses was a cheddar and I bought the last of it. Ha ha. Tastings end at 5pm and people stop in, purchase a glass or two and chat. The tasting room is not fancy but is comfortable in a homey way. I'm going to drag my husband in for a pre-dinner drink before we leave town.
