After my study time at Kru Coffee, I spent about an hour at Thorn and Roots, which is also a cool spot to study. In addition to a sheik modern garden decor, the drinks are delicious - well the drink I had was delicious. It is pricey, the cost of my 20oz beet juice drink cost as much as my 20oz drink and breakfast sandwich combined at the coffee house. That being said, you can get food at Thorn and Root for a similar cost. Also, that juice filled me for hours. So I viewed it as a meal replacement. read more

I first discovered this place through a delivery app while looking for something healthy to eat during my lunch break. I was blown away by how something so healthy could taste so good, and have been hooked ever since! The ingredients are so fresh and worth the price for what you get. I usually order pick-up or delivery or go in to order takeout and they have never messed up my order and it has always been ready on time. They do have a nice small area to eat inside with cafe style seating and play low music. Love, love, love their Tzatziki that comes in with the Mediterranean Grain Bowl. Pairs so beautifully I opt for extra. I like to order the grain bowl with their Mr. Rogers smoothie which is made with cold brew from the lovely Kru Coffee shop next door. This place really isn't what it used to be. They took the best items off the menu (rip the burrata avocado toast, the blue smoothie bowl, and more) and the BLT toast has definitely been downgraded. The menu had AI graphics, which is funny because they charge enough that they should certainly be able to hire a real human artist. This place used to be one of my favorites and it was a disappointment to return to it having become more generic and less delicious. Bummer! read more

Twas warm out, so I was in the mood for a healthy yet tasty treat. I stopped in for a bite at Thorn + Roots and I am always torn between getting something sweet or savory. My friend had a savory Santa Fe chicken grain bowl and I had a tropical berry smoothie bowl. Both options were substantial and filling but in a good way. I promptly placed my order and sat at a table waiting no more than a few minutes. The seating area is a little bigger than people think as the establishment extends back a bit which might seem surprising. It's a tidy and uncluttered space to hang out in while you have a relaxing bite or get work done. Or do some reading if you are inclined. I don't mind tables being wiped down all around me as it makes me feel that they care about overall cleanliness. However it was rather noisy that day and it sounded like a loud industrial sized blender or chopper was going off intermittently as I was eating and chatting away with my friend. The noise level was quite loud and it made it difficult to have conversation as I could barely hear over the grinding, chopping blending sounds that came out of the back kitchen prep area. Their menu items are rather on the pricey side but I do understand that you are getting quality nutritious ingredients, so just a heads up. All in all I was satisfied with the portion size and it was all very tasty. Go here if you want something healthy and good for you. We were in the area visiting a college. One of the staff at the college recommended Thorn and Roots. We decided to try it because it was close to our location and we were hungry! We each ordered a full salad- chicken Caesar and Buffalo chicken. We also ordered the mixed berry smoothie. The salads did not disappoint. In fact, if you are only mildly hungry get the half. There was so much awesome stuff in each bite. Enough chicken, grape tomatoes, shredded Parmesan, and bacon for each bit! The tahini Caesar dressing was delicious! My dining partner said the Buffalo chicken salad was equally jam packed with chicken and fixings. We ordered take out and it was ready super fast! The entire place appears clean, well lit, with a fresh modern feel to it. The staff are great! They have a to go shelf where they place your order so you can walk in and grab it and go. All this despite someone in the establishment needing an ambulance- which pulled up as we arrived. I was skeptical about a place that bases most of the menu on avocado. But, I love avocado and happened to be passing by earlier this week. We were hungry and decided to forego the unhealthy smashburger option (I've never been there) in the same shopping center and find something good for us. Avocado toast is one of those fads that I get...and I make it at home fairly frequently. Trendy? Perhaps. But, this version of avocado toast was seriously off the hook. There are a few other options that I'd like to try in the future...but I went with the simplest one (and asked for no seeds/seedless bread due to a temporary medical situation). They served it on sourdough (but I'm going back to try the multi grain when I can have seeds again!!). The fresh, delicious, decadent, generous schmear of avocado was topped with some avocado oil, salt and pepper. I loved every minute of eating this simple dish. By the way, it was huge. Not a teeny tiny piece of store bought bread...this is a hearty portion. If you're counting carbs or can't have bread, just choose the salad option. Fresh greens (spinach) will take the place of said bread. Yes - it costs extra ($1.50). So do tomatoes ($.75). The Avocado and Burrata choice was enjoyed thoroughly - even though it's the most expensive item on the menu ($13). All of the ingredients were extremely fresh and the staff was awesome. We tried one of the cold pressed beverages (I think this one put us back about $7). It was a lemon-black-charcoal concoction that was very "puckery" but also sweetened with agave. If you dig tart, check this bev out. It's also really clean and in a surprisingly large space. There's a "regular" table in the back with some more casual seating along the side (and a few high top chairs/tables). I decided to join the rewards program and started following them on social media. With tip....the toast, salad and cold pressed juice (a single bottle)...total was about $40. Yea...that's a bit expensive for toast and salad. But, I will say this...the ingredients were top notch and the portions were not, by any means, skimpy. Probably can't afford to eat here daily, but once in a while, I'll definitely indulge in the (mostly) healthy treats here. read more

I think they have done a fantastic job during COVID and being safe while still allowing indoor seating. They have little cards on the table to indicate that the table has been sanitized, and once a customer uses a table they simply flip the card over to indicate that it needs to be cleaned. Tables are spaces apart as well. All staff have gloves on as well as masks. I modified the banana smoothie, and that is where they lost a star. The smoothie itself was fantastic - made with quality ingredients and well blended. I added spinach, kale and protein powder to the smoothie however, and it went from an $8 smoothie to a $13 one. That I think is a little outrageous. I also ordered the avocado toast and although price was pretty standard, for my preference i would have liked a little more avocado and a little less toast. If you aren't looking to make any modifications, I think that their menu is priced competitively to other restaurants with similar items and you'd be satisfied with your order. read more

I don't order things out that I can easily make at home because that seems to defeat the purpose for me. So avocado toast rarely gets ordered. Urban roots changed that today. I have to mention that I did just recently order some at another new location in the capital district out of necessity and it was very small and unfulfilling. This toast however was the opposite. In fact I brought about 1/4 of it home. The sliced avocado was beautiful to look at and perfectly ripened. The poached egg was almost perfect. The bacon crumbles a great addition and the bread perfectly crunchy. It was also seasoned perfectly. My toddler downed his smoothie before I got to try it but clearly it had his approval. The pb&j toast I did get to try and while it's a bit pricey for what it is, it was also yummy. For me the star of the show is certainly the avocado toast. It's bigger and better than anywhere else I've tried. I imagine most people grab and go but a couple tables would be nice. There was one in back. The eggs aren't really poached. They are solid. The toast is not toast, it's wet/soft sourdough. The smoothie was ok. When this was addressed to the employees, they didn't even bother to give a new egg. That was the first and last visit. Let's see if management responds to this because maybe the employees don't care enough but the owner might. I would update my review for an excellent managerial response. read more

Although a great option for what's available in Saratoga, I believe Quality and even quantity has gone down since they've opened. You barley get any base, or very little compared to when they first opened or other options in the capital region. It can't come as a surprise to them. Look at the bowl before you give it to the customer, for example the açai bowl. For the price, it should be a good portion and filling. Never the case. By far the most expensive bowl I've had in the capital region and I can't say the best. Hopefully my opinion is understood by simply looking at the açai bowl when you order one. I can sum up my review in one sentence - I do not buy takeout anywhere else. Seriously; that's no exaggeration. I was heart broken during Covid when I thought they may close. If my kids want food from somewhere else, sure, we will eat there. But when I have my choice, it is T+R. Every. Single. Time. My husband is a chef and I was a server for 10 years. This place invests in ingredients. Yes, a smoothie bowl costs more than a Big Mac meal. But the quality (and quantity) more than justifies the price. The staff are friendly, the vibe is chill and, most importantly, the food is perfection. The Blue My Mind and Kale Me Crazy are both out of the world. So is the Veggie Avocado Toast and Mediterranean Bowl. I am really struggling with these one star reviews. I have had nothing but a 5 star experience here.
