It's not fall without apple cider and apple cider donuts! So of course we had to stop at Thornton River on a recent trip from the DMV area to Shenandoah. They offered us samples of cider which definitely sold us on buying some and they made the donuts fresh. Great treat after hiking in the park all morning. read more

This spot is so conveniently placed on the drive to Shenandoah National Park from the DMV area. You'll see some signs for it and it's pretty hard to miss. We tried some Evercrisp apples which at the time of writing this review, I've only had 2 out of my bag so far, but they might just be the best apples I've ever had. We also got some donuts and some hot cider. They had small sample cups of the cider and that's what convinced us to start buying stuff. They have a couple tables out front but they fill up fast. Stopped by this stand on the way home from driving skyline drive and found a gem!!!! Those donuts were AMAZING! Wish we would've gotten two boxes! They also had gorgeous mums and delicious cider! Great stand definitely worth stopping if you're in the area! read more

Very friendly people who welcomed me with a free cider sample. I came in this past Saturday and to the two ladies who worked there, my wife and I enjoyed the apple fritter more than the apple cider donut. As much as I absolutely go crazy for apple cider donuts, the fritter had great texture and that icing certainly helped. The chunky apples were a pleasant surprise and while the fritter was great on its own, the donut was a bit cakey and needed a drink. Good thing we had their hot apple cider. Picked up some apples and hard pressed sweet cider where Thornton River Orchard had set up a stand outside of Old Rag hike in Sperryville. Really appreciated the free cider sample and it hooked me! The cider was sweet and fresh! The owner was selling the products at the market stand and let me know that it had been pressed by him only 5 days before. Freshness at its finest! He also gave us a solid rundown of all of the apple types he had on offer. When we mentioned we loved honeycrisp apples, he gave us recommendations on what to try. We loved the varieties on offer and left with some new types to try and with cider in hand. A half gallon was $6 and well worth it. Small bottle was $3 (just go for the half, people!) and the full gallon was $12. Great quality and love supporting local businesses! read more

Just bought a peck of soft and mealy Stayman apples this afternoon from Thornton Orchard stand. Definitely not distinctive crisp, tart Stayman I was looking for. Extremely disappointed. Buyer beware: request a sample of apple before buying. Seriously! read more

Buyer beware! They sold me a bushel of peaches. I didn't think to check the quality. When I got home, over half the peaches were completely green. When I called the orchard to complain, I was told they would ripen in a few days. A few days later the peaches were still green and flavorless, since peaches picked too early do not ripen properly. read more
