I mostly come in here for energy drinks and snacks, they have a good selection for a gas station. They also have clean-ish cans. Have you ever actually looked at the can when you buy from these refrigerated sections at gas stations? They are often caked in dust and grime right on top where you put your mouth, seriously it's disgusting. I always wipe them down anyway, but they keep their storage clean here and that shows a level of care you won't get at other local stations. The down side is how busy this place gets, and how poorly the staff seem to handle it. It's frustrating when a line is so long it's extending into the aisles, people can't browse the items and often cant tell where the line actually ends. To summarize they have a solid selection and prices, they also offer a rewards card I believe, but are dragged down by poor customer service. This location is the worst. Even though it's the closet location to me, I will no longer go there. The card readers at the pumps are often malfunctioning. And the air machine is often broken. They also don't know how to crank through a long line at the counter. Then there was the time the cashier was yelling at a customer in front of a line of at least 12 of us--and she was in the wrong on top of it! This chain could really benefit from visiting some Quik Trip stores in St. Louis & Kansas City to see how well run a convenience store can be. This location is still the worst. Went there because I needed to go to the nearby post office. Long line inside and they don't know how to move through it. Thornton's needs to take some scouting trips to the Missouri Quik Trip stores to learn how to run a good convenience store. read more

Sometimes I hear people bagging on Thornton's gas but I'm actually not sure why. Watered down? I'm not sure I'd know the difference but I've never had any problems with it, and it is usually the least expensive in the Round Lake and Gurnee area, at least in my experiences. The store itself is really great. It always seems bright, clean and has a vast array of fountain drinks and additional syrups, my fave being vanilla. You can dispense individual flavored syrups (vanilla, cherry, etc.) into your fountain soda. Prices for these hover around a dollar depending on the size you choose, pretty typical. As someone else said, the staff is really friendly and jovial. One female clerk recently apologized to me on behalf of another customer for cutting in front of me, which I think was just a communication because I was actually going to get something else; but it's just nice that they notice things like that and care enough to mention it five minutes later, when I was being rung up in a separate line with a different cashier. How nice. :) It just the little things that make a difference sometimes. One of the things I like best is that because of how new and well-lit the last remodel was, I always feel safe. It may sound stupid, but I just feel safer here late nights than at other establishments at the same time of night. Oh, and I THINK this location is 24/7. read more

Before I update this I have to say this review isn't for any of the staff in the place. The people who work there are the best. Really--every time we're there they've got smiles on their faces, are friendly and helpful. The one star is for a really disturbing company policy they have. We stopped in for a beverage last night after the gym and watched them throw about twenty doughnuts in the garbage. The woman just kept grabbing trays and dumping them in a trash can--WHACK-THUMP! We were like, "Woa! That's kind of wasteful." "I know she said," WHACK-THUMP! "I hate doing it, but any doughnuts that don't sell during the day have to go in the garbage." WHACK-THUMP! My partner asked her: "Do you ever donate any?" "I think so," she said as she tossed another tray full: WHACK-THUMP! It was only six o'clock. The irony is, We've been in there at night and wanted a doughnut but they didn't have any. "You got chocolate cake in there--you can't throw those away," I said teasingly "That's sinful." She laughed and grabbed another tray. WHACK-THUMP! Six Boston creams. WHACK-THUMP! Three long johns. WHACK-THUMP! Four old fashioned. "If you want anything you'd better grab it!" she said. A little kid was standing there watching this and asked if she meant he could have a doughnut. "No," she said to him, laughing. "You can't HAVE it for FREE. You still have to pay for it." WHACK-THUMP! Now, this was the really disturbing part. The kid got a couple of messages here: First, it's OK to waste food. And second: We'd rather throw this in the garbage than give it to you for free. Ouch. That one was really hard to watch. All and all, it was a really disturbing thing to witness all around. It makes me wonder how it is that we have people starving in this country, and yet we continually support this sort of business and social model that says it's OK to throw food away rather than do something useful with it. Not only that, but we are supporting models that teach the next generation that's the way the world is supposed to work. Meanwhile we cry about how we don't have enough and how we have to be more sustainable. Now, I have a feeling Thornton's would say it was the worker's fault for doing this. But she made it perfectly clear that this was Thornton's policy to throw away all doughnuts not eaten by the end of the day. Not hers. I believe they also do that with all the uneaten roller dogs and Tornadoes. Think about it for a minute. If someone doesn't give them a useless piece of paper--something that has value only because we all choose to agree to. A real item of nourishment that could relieve someone else's pain or hunger (or just brighten their day) is thrown in the garbage. Wow. That's really says a lot about what we've become. read more

"Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned." A small sliding sound ends in a soft clunk. "Um. I'm not a priest, I'm the ghost of James Beard." I clear my throat. "Well... I didn't know what else to say." Uncomfortable silence spins out between us. I hear him sigh. "Why have you disturbed me?" says James, testily. "I have to confess..." "Confess what... uh... my child?" He sounds dubious. "I love roller dogs." "What?!" "Roller dogs... y'know... hot dogs cooked on those little roller things at the gas station." Choked coughing sounds from the other side of the grate. "Mr. Beard? You still there?" Silence... Ah well; it was worth a try. I guess I won't get absolution from one of the worlds' best loved foodies... but my hinky bend for "slumming" with gas station food continues unabated. God knows, I've lived on the stuff until my gut can't take it anymore -- but still... I gotta have it. It's like... culinary "crack." This place is my local supplier. Two roller dogs for $2.22, and coffee and coffee-like substances for $0.89 -- any size. I'm not shy. I get the 24 ouncer. Of course I do. My heart races just thinking about it. Or maybe that's caffeine-induced tachycardia. Gas prices are low, so there's always a little left over for an... indulgence of some kind. Icees in the summer, hotter stuff in the winter. And the staff here tends to be ready for a joke and a smile. So hey, maybe I like a "pusher" with a charming smile. Sue me. read more

I'm not an expert at mini-marts, but this particular fuel and snack stop has been serving my needs off-and-on for a year now. They have proven to be consistently friendly, clean and well stocked. Their prices are competitive and they appear to try and have the kinds of things that their customers need. They are attentive to the concept of "friendly conveniance", something more stores could stand to learn something about. read more

You need to have more than one person working during these hours at this location. I wanted nachos but the cheese machine was broken and there was a constant never ending line due to only ONE person working. I'm probably not the only customer you'll lose tonight. read more

Kelly is a worker who works there. She accused my sons of being in the store earlier in the day and said that they were unruly and was asked to leave. My sons were never in the store earlier that day. They went to football practice and to the stores with me afterwards. I was told by my sons that she addressed them as the black boys that was asked to leave the store earlier in the day. My sons told her they were not in the store none earlier that day and that she has them mistaken for someone else. My sons said that they feel that they were racially profiled and I'll be sure to call the corporate office in the morning. read more

Always has the cheapest gas compared to the other gas stations in RLB and has a nice food center too

Personally I would never get gas here but the coffee is always good and stocked. I always get the pumpkin spice, very tasty.
