The bathroom was updated with more modern equipment. The kitchen of course is small, but still great for preparing a meal. We enjoyed the charcoal grill and the Adirondack rocking chairs. The trails are nice. The lake is quite charming. The only downside is the amount of goose poop near the beach area and leading to the walkway across the water. It would be great to put some sort of goose deterrent or power wash the sidewalks on a regular basis in order to fix this issue. The check in process was quick and easy and the rangers were helpful. It is nice being off the grid. The Wi-Fi is very weak in the cabins, but we actually appreciated that because technology shouldn't be the focus of your weekend away from home.

The park offers horse trails, bike trails, two picnic pavilions, boating, fishing, paddling, 28 primitive campsites, a visitor's center, and an observation tower. There's over 30 miles of trails, including the Azalea Spring Day Loop (2.95 mi), the Big Hill Pond Access Trail (0.30 mi), the Big Hill Pond Trail (4.75 mi), the Dogwood Point Trail (3.10 mi), the Dry Ridge Trail (2.85 mi), the Fox Hollow Trail (.65 mi), the Horse (& Mtn Bike) Trail (6.0 mi), the Rocky Knob Trail (2.40 mi), the Turkey Call Trail (2.45 mi), and the Tuscumbia Trail (2.30 mi). They also offer rentals of kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards in the summer. When we went, the trail to the observation tower was out of pocket due to flooding, so we definitely want to go back.

The trails are decently marked and there are over 30 miles to be hiked of varying difficulty. The observation tower is worth seeing and the trail to get there isn't terribly long. Camp sites are a little close to each other but I don't think it's ever busy here so it's a mute point. Bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen in a TN state park!! You have to use wood from the park and there is plenty of it, but bring a hatchet, you'll need it to split the big pieces! The staff were also very welcoming! Park is horse and pet friendly! I will be visiting again soon!!

Beautiful !!! We only stayed 1 night but wish we had more…read moretime. We got sight #52 which has a water view right above the swim beach. The concrete pad was pretty level and long enough for a 28' trailer and truck. The crushed gravel patio area had a nice CLEAN table, fire pit, and a pole with 2 hooks (to hang trash bags, lights, towels, etc). The bathroom, shower, and laundry were just a short walk and were very clean. The swim area has a nice beach and there is a roped off area that goes out to 6' deep. The water was warm and the bottom was sandy. The trails wander through the woods and have old asphalt paving which does not detract from the beautiful natural surroundings but feels good underfoot and isn't muddy. The caretakers are super nice people. They give you a large trash bag when you check in. USE IT! We saw a family take a grocery bag of trash to the dumpster and leave the rest of their trash scattered around their site when they left. You shouldn't pay more and stay at a commercial campground that packs you in a parking lot with hardly any trees. Check out our federal campgrounds. They're awesome.

Even though the beach area is in a 'No Wake' zone…read morethere is a pier, close enough to keep the waters churned up on days with heavy boat traffic. There are no lifeguards. There are clean showers, water fountains, restrooms, vending and soda machines. There is a play area for children to burn off energy. Water related activities draw a lot of visitors and at peak dates or holidays, getting into the water is difficult and even impossible. Old Bridge Beach and Piney Grove Beach both offer picnic shelters and volleyball courts along with the restroom facilities, and showers. Overnight camping is available at two campgrounds, the Piney Grove Campground run by the Corps of Engineers and the Whippoorwill Campground run by the Bay Spring Marina. Piney Grove Campground offers 139 Class A campsites with water and electrical service as well as restrooms with shower facilities, a fish cleaning station, playground and fishing piers and an amphitheater. Fishing on Bay Springs Lake is very popular and productive. There are fishing tournaments throughout the year, with the exception of winter. There was a state record 6 lb 4 oz chain pickerel at Bay Springs Lake in 1986, and Scott Wood snagged a 4.66-pound saugeye here in 2000. It isn't unusual to catch 20-30 fish a day. We always did the 'catch and release' after we had enough to feed us and our friend.

The campground offers over 60 sites, plus six cozy cabins. Three of these are rustic stone cabins with two rooms each, while the other three are smaller, single-room cabins. Cabin Six has been beautifully updated with new floors, furniture, appliances, and a modern bathroom. For larger groups, the park also has three group camp cabins--each with 20 bunk beds and spacious bathrooms that include showers, toilets, and sinks. The park is full of history and adventure. Visitors can explore the Pioneer Cabin and its nearby waterfall, or cross the famous swinging bridge--a suspension bridge that stretches 25 feet over Bear Creek. On the other side, you'll find two trails perfect for bouldering, rock climbing, or simply wandering through the forest. Outdoor fun continues with three disc golf courses designed for different skill levels. And when it's time to clean up, the campground features two bathhouses that are always kept tidy by the hardworking park staff. Russ explained that he had a spot and let him know when I get close. I called Russ at 1:30 am on my arrival date. Russ came out and help me set up my fifth wheel. That is the kind of service you get at country critter. Very friendly, always there to help. I stayed for 4 months. I hated to go but it was time to move on to the next spot. I will always remember Country Critters.

There's also an RV area with about 30 sites, and at only $20 a day, it's a fantastic deal. It wasn't full during our stay, which made it feel peaceful and uncrowded. My husband did complain about the mosquitoes, but oddly enough, they don't bother me as long as I'm sitting next to him, he's nature's bug spray, I guess. The camp host was incredibly sweet and welcoming, and we loved the little camp cats roaming around. One of them, Shadow, was especially adorable and even let us pet him. All in all, a great campsite with a relaxed vibe and some charming furry company. Would happily stay again.
