I was looking for something in the bailey area that was easy to moderate to take my girl scouts on. Scouring through alltrails and then asking on some women hiking groups on facebook i managed to get a few recommendations. Shadow Pines loop trail is a jefferson county open space trail. It is a 3.9 mile loop with 360 feet of elevation gain. Dogs are welcome on the trail but MUST be on a leash! There are 2 different entrances to this trail. One with a small parking lot and one with a larger parking lot, a bathroom and picnic tables. We started at the one with the smaller parking lot. Its a relatively small and gentle incline. Really this would be good for all skill levels. As you get up on the lollipop portion of the trail, you will begin to get more into the trees and you feel like you are really more in nature. There are some great views along the way as well. The girls were all pleased with the hike. I would do it again if in the area for sure.

Imagine at a busy time of year you would want to get here early. We saw a couple in the parking lot with their dog getting ready to start about same time we were. Walk around the gate and start heading up on the road. You will eventually see a sign on the right for the trail and then start on.dirt or conditions now are snow So much billowy snow and trees!! Lots of beautiful views. We did see some moose tracks but we did not see any moose today. A gentleman who was running did see one however around 2.7 miles in. Trail is mostly snow pack up until 3 miles in. After that, no one has packed it or walked on it. If you want to go further you will need snowshoes and a map. It is just beautiful untouched snow as far as you can see and trees. It was a beautiful day out and very soul filling to be on this trail. This one is definitely a winner!

There's a fun climbing…read moresection towards the summit, but honestly this is a better hike for the rigor versus the sights. Once you see Red Rocks in the beginning, you're pretty much good. Dogs are technically welcome, but I've seen them have to be carried over rocks, which is quite dangerous. The downhill is precarious too, especially if you have bad knees like me. Trekking poles will help you. Mount Morrison is definitely not for the faint of heart. Next time I'll need to be WAY more mentally prepared. Maybe bring more motiviating snacks. Anyways, plan to do nothing after this hike and give your body the rest it will desperately need.

Alpine lakes are my passion. So when I made a mission to hit the trails and relax next to all the…read morealpine bodies of water I could, I added Shelf Lake to the list, and I'm glad I did! Why? Let's break it down. 1. At 7.4 miles and 2,000+ feet of elevation gain, it's bound to get your heart pumping without being too strenuous. I completed the out-and-back trail in just under 3.5 hours. 2. Parts of the trail along Smelter Gulch follows a creek, and until the last mile or so towards the lake it is shaded as well. Makes for a chilly morning for early risers like me, but a great way to beat the afternoon sun for those that like a later start! 3. Wildlife? Check! While I missed out, the group ahead of me saw a moose cow and calf on the trail. There were plenty of pica and marmots too! 4. Wildflowers? Check! While I did this hike towards the "end" of wildflower season, there were still more than enough wildflowers to ooh and awe over. 5. There is ample first come, first served camping along the road, so why not make a weekend of it? Some sites on the South-West side of the road were much more exposed, but they can all host a large group! Shelf Lake was a wonderful way to get some fresh air during the week! **Pro Tip: The road to the trail head is pretty bumpy. You need a vehicle with a bit more than average ground clearance to ensure you aren't zigzagging all over trying to find the flattest route.
