History

Established in 1988.

The Thrifty Nickel came to Mobile, Alabama in 1988 as an 8 page paper. In 2001 the name was changed to American Classifieds seamlessly providing an effective low cost alternative 52 weeks a year to the high priced daily papers. We are audited yearly by the Circulation Verification Council. This audit is sent to SRDS, AdWeek & other national media directories. The origination of this part of American ingenuity began in the basement of one man's home around 1970 with an idea and mimeograph machine. Classified ads were sold for a quarter. Copies of the small classified paper, then called "Thrifty Nickel" were distributed free from the back of a volkswagen. The classified paper caught on and quickly began franchising to communities, cities and towns across the U.S. Today's papers operate across the country under American Classifieds and Thrifty Nickel with a large affiliate network of shopper papers. Meet the Manager: Karen V.

I started with this company in 1994 after working for myself for many years. I worked in sales for several years and then added distribution. After becoming distribution manager, I continued to work in sales training for our Gulfport, MS office. After Hurricane Katrina I returned to Mississippi, performing sales, distribution and distribution for the Mobile office. Today I handle a variety of duties including distribution, sales, and social marketing.
