like most people, i didn't have a good experience. the customer service agent i worked with was very rude and constantly stared at me like i was supposed to know what he was trying to say when he wasn't opening his mouth. when he did speak, it was very low and hard to hear. i will say it was easy to extend when i needed to, but that's likely because i could do it online without needing to go in. when i returned it, i forgot to refuel (yeah, i know, that one's on me) and they charged me as if there was an empty tank when it was a quarter left. they also charged me for 28 gallons when the vehicle's capacity was 26.5. not cool. i know there was 6.5 gallons left so it should've been a charge for 19 gallons. that's pretty gross. will never return, budget is way better. oh and budget doesn't charge for the spouse to be an additional driver like thrifty does. not so thrifty in my opinion, they nickel and dime you for every little thing. i can't say enough bad about them. read more

Worst experience ever it's been more than 10 days to get your deposit back. 14 days out and nothing has been resolved. I have Call everyday. No resolution. I keep getting the run around. They told me to call my credit card company I called them they told me monies have not been release back to my card. It's like they just want you to forget about your deposit. $200 deposit. Arrived a day after Christmas and approached the counter to be informed our rental would not be available due to overlooking and wait can exceed 2 hours. While families with young children and elderly couples waiting, how can this happened? Is it due to the 3rd party companies who is at fault. I returned the vehicle with a full tank and was charged over $200 in fuel. I filed out a complaint online to the email listed on their support page and the email was rejected. My vehicle had a maintenance due light on as soon as I got in and came on every time I started the car. That was a shocker. The car rental rate at Thrifty/Dollar will be cheaper than other places by a few dollars. DO NOT BE FOOLED. You will end up paying more after all is said and done. The attendant at Thrifty added car insurance that we did not ask for. This was on me, as I should have noticed sooner. However, as soon as I found out what he did, I called and told customer service what happened. I explained that I was willing to accept the extra insurance for that day, as I did not catch it in time, but I requested that, from that point on, remove the charges for the rest of the rental. Charles in customer service told me that the charge would be removed by the rental location, but only after the car was returned. Of course this set off warning bells in my head. I expressed my doubt and customer service then provided a confirmation number to confirm that the charge would be removed. Two days later, I returned the car and visited the front desk, where the attendant told me that the charge could only have been removed within 15 minutes of executing the contract. The attendant (did not get his name but he had dark hair and very light blue eyes) said that we could ask the manager. We went to the manager, Burt, where, instead of asking the manager, the attendant quickly told him what to say (i.e., they cannot remove the charge because it was more than 15 minutes, customer service was wrong, etc.). The manager merely confirmed the attendant. I asked what was the confirmation number that customer service provided. They looked it up and said it was blank. After that, they said there was nothing they could do. I know you will be tempted to get the lowest rental rate, particularly if you do your homework and research rates through third-party vendors like Expedia. Do yourself a favor; pay a little more on the front-end so to avoid "accidental" charges which will cost you more on the backend. read more

I'm floored by how terrible this experience was. First of all, they advertise a "manager's special" on their website, which they say could be any car they have in stock. When I got to pick up my car, they said it would be an electric vehicle, which would not work for me since I was driving somewhere with no electric hookup. But here's the good part: the counter rep said the manager's special is ALL electric vehicles, since no one will rent them otherwise. He said that every customer is mad about it when they find out, and that management knows that, but they just keep doing it to make money, and let the counter reps deal with the fall out. So I had to pay hundreds of dollars more to get a car I could use. In addition to that, so many things were broken: - They ask you to check in online ahead of time, which includes taking photos of your license and everything, but it turns out that doesn't work. The counter rep says it hasn't worked in ages, but they still have you go through it. - The battery died on the car key fob, so the car wouldn't start. I had to buy a battery to fix it myself. - I kept getting an "oil change required" alert while driving. - The car was dirty on the outside when I picked it up (which I don't really care about, but just another thing). Wow. Tried to reserve 10:30 PM pickup (I was careful because some rental places are closed by then), got reset somehow to 10:30 AM (probably before I confirmed--so that's on me I guess). Realized this day of leaving on plane and no help from thrifty. Can't even find a way to contact a human via "change reservation" process on expedia but finally found support chat. Chat guy I talked with seemed helpful/friendly but claimed couldn't "negotiate" with thrifty policy so now I have no rental car waiting for family when I get off the plane. Out the money I (stupidly) prepaid. DON'T PREPAY. And don't use Expedia or Thrifty who could have easily fixed this up, good night I've gotten changes like this 10 times when it was 100 percent my fault and could have canceled on travelocity until the last minute. read more

There's a 30 minute wait today for everyone - even Bluechip, even those with a reservation, even though my flight is as delayed and I got here 20 minutes after the time I was supposed to pick up a car. I was told when we reserved the van that having my 40-year-old son be on the contract would not add any additional fees. We had gone through Costco to rent the van in advance, which having the second driver be on the car at no extra cost. When we got to the rental facility, they said they would not honor that and charged us for the extra driver. This was a real disappointment. Also, arranging to coordinate my son and myself being at the desk at the same time, due to his flying schedule, and it had to be done within a narrow window of time. Arrived at Thrifty fresh off of our flight to the ABQ airport. Had a reservation for a midsize SUV. Of course they had none, so they offered us a car in another class. However, their faulty credit credit card machine was unable to read the chip on any of my boyfriend's credit cards. He was supposed to be the primary driver, so according to the person checking us out, the car would have to go on his card. However, he would not be able to swipe or tap his card. Only use chip. And he refused to try my boyfriend's cards again. This resulted in us having to use my card, making me the primary driver and pay almost $100 extra to add my boyfriend on as a secondary driver. And of course my boyfriend's cards worked just fine everywhere else we went on our 8-day vacation all over New Mexico. Never renting from Thrifty again. read more

I wish I had read reviews, I never would have rented here. I booked through expedia for $31 a day. When I arrived I was told I was on the "manager's special" and I had to get an electric car. On expedia, the listing said "Compact or larger or similar" "special vehicle". NOWHERE did it say electric. The fact that other people had this complaint before me and reviewed online, you think the manager would change the listing? I returned the electric car and paid an extra $15 a day for a standard vehicle on the second day of my trip, because I do not know how to charge and electric car. They charged me for 4 days of the new car, when it was only 3 days of the "upgrade". We had scheduled a 2-week road trip around the Grand Circle, departing and returning to ABQ Thrifty Car Rental facility. Forcing us to rent an EV was impractical and insulting. The surly painted-fingernailed "male" who handled our rental car asserted that Expedia should have included it in the "fine print" of the rental car agreement. Rented a car Laguardia air port 9/12/23. I declined PLATEPASS because we were only going to use the bridge once. Being from New Mexico which has NO toll roads or bridges I was definitely challenged. It would have been great customer service if the woman at the desk had asked me if I might need info on navigating the toll lanes (I've heard other rental co do this). First time in Albuquerque, don't know where anything is, much less fast charging EV stations, and what kind of travel experience involves downloading EV apps and sitting at EV stations for 30+ minutes waiting for a charge??? So their solution ... only one other vehicle available for a $70 upgrade fee, which was a 50% higher cost than what I originally reserved (which oh by the way, I was to pick up from Hertz lot). Are you kidding me??? My hunch tells me this is done on purpose to put people in a predicament, and force them under duress into an expensive upgrade. My wife and I recently rented a car from the Albuquerque Airport Thrifty Rent A Car. I explicitly told the rental agent that we did NOT accept the Loss Waiver Damage option (with my wife as a witness), but when we were already on the road (it was well after dark after a long flight) to our ultimate destination 2.5 hours away, we noticed on our receipt that the agent added the option anyway for an extra $167.96. We tried several times to call him at Thrifty, but only got a nationwide Thrifty number with options that did not apply to our issue and instead sent us in circles and ultimately kept dropping the call. Since we initially made the reservation through Expedia, I then entered into an online chat with Expedia. Expedia told me that they were able to speak with someone at Thrifty who told them that nothing could be done now but that I could discuss reimbursement with Thrifty when I returned the car. When we returned the car to Thrifty at the Albuquerque Airport, the same agent who rented the car to us was at the desk there, and I explained the situation to him. He said that it was too late to do anything to correct the situation; that we had only 30 minutes after initially renting the car to make any changes in the rental agreement. His tone of voice was extremely rude and arrogant when he stated this, so I walked away very, very angry. I wish I had taken this Thrifty employee's name because, when initially renting the car, he talked a mile a minute like someone high on drugs and seemed to pay little attention to anything I said. It made me wonder if his pay was based in part on a commission, especially after I read a review on the Expedia website by another car renter at this same Thrifty location who had the exact same experience (not surprisingly, the overall rating of this Thrifty location on Expedia was 2.7/5, and even lower on other websites, with many giving it a 1 rating having had similarly terrible customer service). I explained our experience on a customer form to Hertz, of which Thrifty is a subsidiary, requesting them to do the right thing by refunding the $167.96 for services we explicitly declined. Their response was basically, 'tough luck--you should have read the contract before signing it.' I will never rent from Hertz or its subsidiaries Thrifty or Dollar again, as their employees are untrustworthy at best and con-men liars and cheats out to maximize their commissions by any means at worst. read more

Reserved a Chevy Malibu through Expedia from Thrifty ABQ for October 5, 2024 , 7 pm through October 12, 2024 at 5am, total $286.65. We opted to prepay for a full tank of gas so our total was $350, plus the $200 refundable deposit. Picked up car around 7:30 pm. Car would not start. Agent said they only had one car available, a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The exchange was made and we proceeded with our visit. We were provided an exchange for that stated "all terms and conditions from the original invoice were in effect. The car was returned on October 5 at 4:45 am as instructed. Upon landing in Chicago, I had an email from Thrifty containing a final invoice for $1219. They added $99 per day for an "upgrade". At no point during the process did I ask for an upgrade nor was it mentioned that they were offering the replacement vehicle as "an upgrade". I have fought it through Visa to no avail. Thrifty claims I received the services as invoiced. So the scam is I reserved an 8 day rental for $286.65 and am stuck with additional fraudulent charges bringing the total $1219. Good luck reaching customer service. Hertz needs to shut this place down. Next stop BBB and letter to New Mexico attorney general's office. Beware of bait and switch on "mystery car" option! Upon checking in to the airport counter to rent our "mystery car", the aloof counterperson informed us that we would be receiving.... A TRANSIT VAN. This is what this huge van was called, so we declined. We did not want a huge van for our weekend. Next comes the "mandatory" swap charge of an additional $80. The beginning of my nightmare with Thrifty's began when I entered the queue line at the Albuquerque airport with my son and our 4 suitcases and 2 backpacks. The representative at the counter had his feet up on the counter and appeared to be eating or chewing something. Because his mouth was full, he motioned for me to approach the counter with his hand like a dog and never verbally addressed me or welcomed me. Not wanting to bother him, I explained to him that I had received a text in the air saying that my car was ready but that it resulted in an error code due to my still being in the air, I was guessing, and I wasn't sure how to proceed now. I told him I that I was a "skip the counter" customer, something I had done in the past with other rental car companies and truly enjoyed due to its ease and ability for me to start my vacations as quickly as possible. The man told me that I'd need to wait and first, he would need my Driver's License, which I provided. I handed him my military ID and Driver's License. He finally stood up from his chair and examined my identification. He then told me he would need my credit card. I provided him with a credit card and he said it needed to be the one I purchased the car with. I told him I didn't have it on me and that I never got any emails or texts or saw anything on the computer saying I would need my original credit card and that I am aware of companies that do state that, in which case I bring the original card and had I know i would have done so. The man sighed and huffed and told me he wouldn't be able to rent me a car without it. I was shocked because there are many valid reasons someone may not have an original card on their person (fraud, expired, closed account, lost, stolen, etc.) and never have I ever heard of it preventing a company from completing a paid transaction. I told the man that I find this hard to believe and he told me there was nothing he could do without my original credit card and that I would need to call the Thrifty's hotline for help. I explained to him that I already paid and I am a "skip the counter" customer and I'm just here to pick up my keys and leave. I offered him my phone to show one of the many texts I had received before ever even renting my car began and he refused saying it would be of no help to him. He told me he couldn't rent me a car without the original credit card and I needed to call the number. I asked him if he could call the number because I had been traveling all day and my phone was about to die. He said no, he could not call for me and that I would need to handle it on my own phone. I asked him for his manager and he said the manager would not help me either and she would tell me the exact same thing. I told him that's fine and to please get her and let her tell me that for herself. He said no and sat back down, kicked his feet up on the desk and went back to sitting and doing nothing. To the man's right was Dollar and the representative there was also sitting in a chair, doing nothing but reading a book, and didn't seem appalled at the level of customer service I had been receiving from this man at all. To his left was Sixt and they had been busy helping customers since my arrival. I looked over at the agents at Sixt who did seem aware of the horrible service I was receiving and told them that I had rented a car from them last month and it was a fantastic experience, not at all like the experience I was currently receiving from Thrifty's. They both said smiled and shouted "Thank you!" This interaction seemed to bother the man at the Thrifty's counter but he continued to sit in his chair and do nothing, with his feet propped up on the counter as he stretched back with his arms and hands behind his head. I proceeded to make the phone call only because I was at his mercy. The hotline said there would be a 10 minute wait and I looked at the man and repeated that, waiting for him to realize it wouldn't be worth either of our times since I was a "skip the counter" customer. He simply shrugged and went back to not caring at all. As the phone rolled through its many prompts, I asked the man what to press so that I could get to an agent quickest. He shrugged and said he didn't know and it didn't matter and to just press anything because I needed to talk to an agent. I explained to him that I didn't know what to press because I wasn't canceling a reservation, I wasn't making a reservation, my phone was about to die, etc. and I didn't even know which sequence to enter. He said he didn't know and he wasn't familiar with the phone system. Beyond frustrated with his total lack of customer service, I asked him if we could simply cancel the order and start a new reservation - he said no. I spoke to both Expedia and Thrift and they kept pointing the fingers at each other. Regardless of who is working, I have always had great service. I'm bad with names and I apologize, but the guy that works the counter during the late nights is one cool dude. Every time I have arrived to pick up my car, he's there waiting and even remembers me. Returning a vehicle here is pretty easy. I rarely have to wait and their shuttle back to the airport runs all the time. Overall, renting from this Thrifty is quick, prices are competitively inexpensive, and there's usually a good selection of cars ready for me, even during the late evenings. I flew in to finalize my wedding plans. It was Mother's Day and I walked up to thrifty customer service with no line which was awesome. Said hello and happy Mother's Day, even though I'm not a mother of lil humans I'm a fur baby momma. Didn't think anything of it. Unfortunately, the teller Tiffany did and was incredibly rude and condescending. I am in customer service and have never been treated the way I was. After the first rude comment I was put off but just continued on with the process. She was going over where the cars were and I simply said "they are outside to the left right?" Tiffany then proceeded to say "would you like to guess or do you want me to tell you." Seriously?!? Who talks to strangers like that. I just couldn't stand by and asked why she was being so rude. She went on to say cuz I assumed she was a mother (which she admitted she was, so what was the problem? I will NEVER rent from this place!! After a long flight, on January 13, 2022, we arrived here and had to wait, while the girl was using the restroom! The girl came in and had the most longest nails, I have ever seen! My sister had reserved a rental and the receptionist seemed to be having issues entering stuff in. When she finally got everything entered, she proceeded to say "Okay we can't rent to you today, so you are going to have to call this number! We can't do anything for you because you were put on a list!" It was 6 in the evening. My sister went ahead and called the customer service line to Thrifty, and the office was closed! While my sister was on the phone, the girl helped the next customer and she seemed to be having issues as well, entering the customers information. The receptionist, with her ratchet nails, had to call her manager in, because obviously she didn't know what she was doing! The manager came in, and he started to help the customer that ratchet nails couldn't seem to help. The ratchet nail receptionist, then said to my sister," How can I help you? " my sister then said , "The office is closed, so what are my options?" The ratchet nail receptionist then told my sister," There is nothing we can do for you! You can't rent from us, or the rental places linked with us. Your payment probably didn't go through! The customer service office opens tomorrow from 9 am to 5 pm. " The manger then asked what was wrong and the ratchet nail receptionist said that my sister was "DNR!" WTF!? The manger then explained that DNR meant Do not rent! Lol that the only thing we could do was go to another rental place, not associated with them! Wow, had there not been other rental options, we would have been stranded at the airport until the next day! We then went to Enterprise, and they helped us. Yes, we had to pay more, but my sisters credit card, that she used for the Thrifty rental, went through, with no problems. My sister called the Thrifty customer service line the next morning and they told my sister that she was not on any list!!! They also refunded my sister her money, and apologized for the mistake of the ratchet nail girl, who must have entered my sisters information in wrong! Beware, because Thrifty, obviously didn't care that we would have been left stranded there until the next day!
