I had open communication with the counselor, but the messages never specified an exact date for when appointments would resume. An email was sent with the invite and date, but there were no text reminders -- which is how we normally receive appointment notifications. Because I wasn't aware of the specific date, we missed the session, and I was charged a $145 cancellation fee. I explained that their usual communication process had not been followed and that I had asked them multiple times not to email only me (since I'm at work and not my son). Despite this, they refused to acknowledge their role or adjust the fee. The counselor is great, but the office practices feel more focused on money than on supporting the client. For that reason, I cannot recommend Twin Lake Counseling.

With that being said, the 1 star review is mostly regarding their absolutely ruthless cancellation fees. I got incredibly sick on Sunday, and had to go to urgent care, got heavy prescription medication, etc. This is probably the sickest I have ever been in my life. I emailed my therapist early the following morning saying I believed I would need to cancel our Monday evening appointment, as my ears were so plugged that I could not hear, and I had mostly lost my voice. I received a reply almost 3 hours later indicating that she would cancel the session and that I would incur a $140 fee. I replied exactly 1 minute later asking if insurance would cover any of that fee, or if I would be paying fully out of pocket. I received a reply over 2 hours later stating that insurance would not help, and that the full $140 would be out of pocket. I replied exactly 3 minutes later, saying that, given that information, I would prefer to keep my time slot and just power through it. I received a reply nearly 2 hours later stating that my time slot had been filled. I understand people have busy schedules and busy days, and I try not to read too deep into such things. However this whole ordeal made me feel like nothing but a number attached to dollar signs, and has eroded my trust in this practice as well as therapy as a whole. This whole thing has probably set me back a very very long time with regards to seeking and getting help. Again, she was an outstanding therapist, and it breaks my heart to let her go, but I do not feel that this company is geared towards caring about their patients over profit. Do not consider this practice unless you never get sick or could ever face an emergency, because they will certainly make it worse. Additionally, I have spoken to four people I know who are in therapy, and all of them noted that their practices had much kinder cancellation policies.
