My daughter was in crisis. We were referred to Thrive and received assistance from Dr Anne Sarpy. My daughter was placed on meds and saw Dr Sarpy 4 or 5 times. She seemed to be getting better. Out of the blue my daughters appts were cancelled and she was told because she lives in Chicago (just across from Oak Park) Thrive cannot help her. ??? I called and asked "Can Dr Sarpy at least help us to find a physician who'll cointinue to treat my daughter?" Nope no ceremony, no meds, no referral. I'd give a zero if I could. Not only was the waitlist long, it wasn't worth it. These are the most unqualified, incompetent, unprofessional people around. They're not knowledgeable or resourceful and you'll leave disappointed wondering why you just wasted your time. My therapist Samantha Buhai-Jacobus was a joke, she's one of those that just nods and agrees and offers no real help or guidance. Also these people are a scam and will use any excuse to Bill you $50. My mom also goes here and her therapist has been out for months leaving her with no help during a time she needs it most and her Psychologist was extremely disrespectful, rude and caused her more anxiety and hopelessness. Thanks to thrive my ptsd and anxiety is worse. Seriously, do yourself a favor and go anywhere else unless you want to walk out of here needing more therapy just save yourself the energy and go somewhere else. read more

So, going along with previous reviews.... This place is a joke. Their staff is under trained and yes, horrible bed side manner here. I don't know where they get there social workers or therapists from, but holy crap! Rude, immature, terrible people skills! I feel bad for those that are so sick that they need this low-income help, but there it is. They need the help and the help here is terrible. The guy who runs this place, the President or whatever, is totally under educated about mental health in general. Who put this guy in charge?! Worst experience trying to set up mental health care. Called and was told it would be a two month wait, two months pass by and I check in and they've added two more months to the wait. Strangely they had someone contact me after I told them I wasn't interested and proceeded to tell me I got it wrong and that I could continue to wait. I used to go here and moved away in that time it has gone downhill- for lack of a better term an absolute shit show. Don't bother, they don't really care. read more

Mental health is way under-rated. My dad was a psychiatrist, so it goes without saying that I'm slightly nuts. Doing just fine, though -- no worries. But as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Oldest child, who has more issues than Natiional Geographic, got in trouble at his high school for being verbally abusive to more than one student. His dean sent him for six counseling sessions here. This kid hates anyone trying to help him. Parents, teachers, shrinks -- he just wants them to go away and leave him alone. So the fact that he doesn't hate his counselor is very impressive. The building is modern and cheery, the staff is friendly, and there are "Behavioral Healthcare Services" for youth, adults, couples, families, you name it. read more

In the context that I just now received a bulk email from Thrive begging for donations: Yes, normally I'd be thinking generosity but in the case of Thrive Counseling Center then a bad taste is brought to my mouth. I am a former client from years ago before the name change and though I am very grateful for your help way back then - I have to say that I consider Thrive to have dropped the ball on me several times since (for years) There has been about four occasions when I was in a deepest dark place in my mind (depression) and when I reached out to Thrive for help then I was either ignored (no call back) or I was just coldly told "We Aren't Accepting New Patients" I have to ask then, if you haven't been accepting new patients for years now then what have you been doing ? ...and WHY would someone donate to you when you apparently are fiddling around as non responsive to the mental health needs of your (our) community? When someone such as myself calls and is coldly turned away for YEARS now then apparently Thrive appears only good looking on paper but is useless in real life to the people you are purporting to help only in order to receive greater donations. Is there something I'm not understanding here? Oh, and NO, I'm sure that I'm not getting turned away due to my poor attitude. How do I know? Because I've always been a perfect gentleman when I called seeking help (honestly) The attitude I'm displaying in this review is only expressing my frustration due to years of getting disappointed EVERY time I had called in my 'hour of need' only to find out that once again you (Thrive) is just about to drop the ball on me AGAIN. over all the years that we have tried Thrive, sub-standard. it is TOP, typical oak park, where there is a slight arrogance, and casual atmosphere due to lack of competition. they dont return phone calls, and the quality I feel is moderate at best. outcomes questionable. After several years of being a patient at Thrive I feel I need to warn people. There are major systemic problems here. True, they have temporary interns doing counselling and many of them are great. Ive also had very good experiences with caseworkers. The problem with Oak Park Thrive is in management and with the medical director. Im going to mention a few names only because if these individuals are no longer at Thrive in the future I dont want there to be any confusion. I wont go into my personal detail here but the problems start at the top with Sidney Wax, medical director Ann K. Sarpy, and Rebecca Fallert. All three have made it impossible for me to have any confidence in this center. My experiences with all three have resulted in me having to find therapy elsewhere where I first had to deal with the emotional damage they created. Be careful people, Thrive Oak Park needs an overhaul. read more

Do not attempt to get any help from Thrive Counseling unless you have months and months to wait, and the time to give them repeat phone calls. I sent my friend there because she lives in Oak Park and although I knew they could be sticky, I did hear there were some good people there. She called and they took all her information. She never rec'd a call back. When she finally called them they told her that although her name was on their list, they had "lost" her information. Today I tried to get my son in as he is in a crisis; with Dr. Sarpy. He has seen her for YEARS, but has not seen her in almost a year, due to moving out of the area. He has not seen another psychiatrist in that time period. I called in crisis mode on a Saturday. No one called me back. Today I called to try and make an appointment for him. He signed the "HIPPA form" for me to able to do this. I JUST WANTED AN APPOINTMENT. They said he would have to re-do all admissions info beause it had been a certain time period. Anyway the whole situation was sad, and particularily ironic since this place is supposed to be about helping people and mental health. IT IS NOT. They care about forms, money and rules. They do not care about the patient at all. No concerns at all. Sure, I understand forms and things that must be done!! But first if you are a caring good mental health provider, get your patient a time to be seen and then continue with the rest of the "paperwork". I find this place to be another example of the sad state of mental health in this country. read more

I am very upset with this facility. I know someone who traveled miles and miles on trains and buses and foot to get there. This person suffers from debilitating depression. Upon arriving there 7 minutes late he was told that the psychiatrist would not see him. I find this deplorable, not to mention uncaring and as for customer service, yikes! read more

OK...so I never write reviews..but I feel that I would be doing a great injustice to the people who plan on coming to Thrive, in hopes of receiving caring treatment - if didn't at least caution them first. Let me just state right off the bat, this is not a review from a person who has dealt with them once, or even a handful of times. I have been attending Thrive for the last 6 months, and my friend has been going there for over 3 years. The treatment my friend has received is nothing short of deplorable. He see's two staff members there, one is the clinical director, and the other is the Dr. who writes the scripts. He sees the therapist 1 x a week, even though he has repeatedly asked to be seen twice a week. He was diagnosed originally with Bi-Polar disorder, and at times has severe episodes of mania. When my friend goes to see this counselor - he tells me this "therapist" is constantly watching the clock, and is cutting their appointment short by at least 5 - 10 minutes EVERYTIME. Apparently this therapist, doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with making your patients feel like an inconvenience, and a waste of your precious time. The therapist and the Dr. NEVER communicate with each other, so my friend is constantly having to update each one of them before they really begin their session (time consuming and totally unnecessary especially when other pressing issues can be addressed). I mean seriously..don't you guys take notes on your patients and pass them along to the Dr. - so everyone is on the same page? To top it all off - my friend just recently went to go see the Dr. who can't seem to make up her mind on what condition(s) he suffers from - then gives him medication which has had adverse effects on him - in hopes that it will help...I'm sorry - I know in mental health there are no hard and fast rules for treatment, and everyone is different, but since when do they feel it's acceptable to treat people like guinea pigs? Oh, and here's the kicker - she asks you what medication you want to be put on!!! WHAT? Yes - you heard correctly folks- the Dr. is asking her patients what they'd like to be put on. Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't it YOUR job to know what medication a patient should be put on!!??? Not sure if they're just lazy - or just don't care about people's well being. I mean really - if that's the case..why would these people ever think they would make good therapists/doctors? You always feel rushed during your appointments, you never receive a response back from the Dr. if you request she call you...apparently if you have a question about medication/therapy you either need to research it yourself, or talk to a pharmacist - because they don't give you the time of day - they sure don't hesitate to hand you a bill for their services though. Oh and just to let you all know 3 years and counting and my friend still hasn't received an accurate diagnosis - or treatment that has made any noticeable difference. PEOPLE AT THRIVE YOU NEED TO GET YOUR SH_ _ TOGETHER! I think I'm going to suggest that my friend start his therapy somewhere else in the area..I hear Pillars is pretty good. Maybe they'll have time to care about people and do their jobs. The only one good thing about this establishment is the woman who greets you at the front desk. I think her name is Eileen. She's always kind, smiling and willing to do whatever she can to help out...too bad the other staff member's don't follow her example. read more

I was recommended a nurse at my job and a co-worker. It took almost a month to schedule me an appointment to see a therapist. Never was I told there was a waiting list until I called two weeks later to find out what was taking so long to schedule me with a therapist. When I arrived I was excited but at the same time nervous to speak to someone about my issues. The lady at the front desk gave me papers to fill out. On one of the forms I had to sign stated I needed to pay 30 co pay. I didnt have any money on me. The lady at the desk said how about half. I said I didn't bring any money. The coordinater came and spoke to me and had a very nasty tone. I ask her can I pay friday and she said no. I said to her I was never told to have 30 dollars. If so Iwould have came with money or rescheduled. Why would I come there knowing I have to pay and don't have any money. She was go back and fourth with me. So unprofessional. I let her know she was stressing me out more. I called mom to bring me 30 dollars because i really need counseling.Then I thought about it and said I'm paying them. That lady was being very nasty toward me. The bulk of the money they were gonna get from my insurance and they refused to see me over 30 dollars. I will find another facility. read more
