I enjoyed a Sprinboard class here (using Classpass). I do think the workout could be a bit more challenging but it was still great! The space (in the backroom for upperbody workouts) is beautiful! There is so much sunlight coming in, shiny wooden floors, it felt so therapeutic to be there! If Pilates wasn't so expensive in Rittenhouse, I'd come here again! But it's such a trend right now, and the demand is high, that it is absolutely expensive. But I love Pilates equipment and the workout! read more

Joined the Pilates reformer class for the first time with a friend of mine. Mind you, I joined the intermediate/more intense class as a beginner so really felt the burn haha. The instructor was really helpful knowing that I was beginner by putting me in the right form and helping me with the machine. Thought she was really considerate! So I attended my first sound bath meditation here and I was beyond happy I did. I kind of had an idea of what it might be like but what it actually was far surpassed what I expected it to be like. I had a taste of Tibetan singing bowl meditation when I graduated from my yoga teacher certification several years ago, but this was a more formal event, specifically meant to evoke healing and restoration through Yin Yoga and Singing Bowls. It was truly a transformative experience. Eumi was an amazing teacher. I felt at peace. She arranged the mats (along with the props) in the class to gracefully drape and surround her at the center of the class. She adorned her space with pretty white strong lights and a ceiling moon and Starlight. The best part was that there were other instruments she used for the meditation which were chimes, a bead drum, and the Native American Flute. This is a very loving place to find yourself and I never regret coming here for class even though I have a busy schedule. I only do the yoga classes and they are pretty frequent throughout the week from morning until late at night. There's a good mix of teachers and the ones I've run into have been very friendly and supportive. The facilities are high quality and they'll rent you mats if you don't have one yourself. Beyond the new member special of a month free of yoga for only $49, I think a membership here is quite expensive. My recommendation is to go on to Groupon and look for 10 or 20 pack classes. I love the feeling of stepping into this business as it's very calming. Also I've done their hot yoga classes and to prevent slipping and sliding I bought one of the Jade yoga mats they sell at the studio. The room for yoga was large but the class that I attended was super packed, to the point where we needed to stagger and it was hard to sprawl out. I tried to like yoga for a really long time and I finally do thanks to Lisa O' Rear! I signed up for ClassPass this summer and have tried out studios all over the city, but I just couldn't find a class that gave me just the right amount of challenge and instruction. Lisa does such a great job of explaining how to do each pose properly and any modifications (easier or more challenging) that people can take. I have not tried any of the other instructors at this studio yet, but I can certainly vouch for Lisa and her 6:30am class on Thursdays. read more

Imagine being a novice exerciser, spotting a groupon to do yoga-great! Imagine signing up for your first class: so exciting! Imagine walking in to the studio and being blasted with hot air: this is...confusing...?? Philly Power Yoga is no joke. It's hot but not Bikram hot, and the instructors are seriously intense. I remember Troy's class completely kicking my ass. Didn't know I could get such a cardio workout from yoga. Did my first class there free and then I did their $35 for 5 class intro package, although from their website it looks like they now have a $40 intro month deal which is awesome. They have classes late night which is great when you work late, however, they can get pretty crowded. I'm tallking literally 2 inches between mats crowded. That's my only critique of this place. Another great thing about them (which is how I found out about them) is that they've donated a few monthly/ten class passes to my school's yearly auction which is really generous of them. read more

I bought some classes from groupon and Rue La La, and finally had the chance to take advantage of them. I've tried yoga before, but not recently, and I had never done hot yoga. At first I found the heat overpowering, but I got used to it, and I'd like to think it made my muscles warmer/more flexible because I'm basically totally inflexible. I went to a beginners class with Troy. He was great, he kept saying we were doing fine, and not to worry about how we were doing. I was familiar with basically all the poses we did, and we spent a pretty long time in each pose. Although it was a beginners class, it seemed like there was a fair amount of non-beginners who took advantage of modifications to make the poses more advanced. It did seem like the class was a little crowded, but otherwise I enjoyed it and plan to fit it in to my workout schedule. read more

I got to try this place because of a living social deal that I found and all I can say is that I wish I had more classes in the package that I had bought! I went to a few of the regular heater power yoga sessions and I really liked them. My favorite thing is that they have windows in the classroom that let in an amazing amount of natural light. While I love shavasana in a dark room, there was something entirely rejuvenating about the natural sunlight that morning during class that my whole day was seemingly better! I've also tried the yoga sculpt class - I've heard about these classes from friends that participate in other studios and I was a little worried. BUT this class was AWESOME! I really liked it and I was SO sore the next morning, so I knew I had gotten a good workout in. I just wish that the class was offered during more time slots throughout the week (Monday mornings and 4pm on Thursdays) as I would have attended more often. Check this place out if you're looking for a new yoga studio - it's great! Teachers and classes are awesome, the front desk girl today? Not so great. I arrived early to the 9am class because I thought better early then late, it happened to be 8:30am. If no one was there I would have been perfectly happy sitting outside. When this miserable lady rang me in, the first thing I said was "sorry I'm here to early." Not trying to listen and looking annoyed, she said "no ones usually here at 8:30." So I repeated again, sorry I'm here so early. After a nice class, I leave and forget my water bottle, I come back and another class is occurring. I told her I forgot my water bottle and she doesn't say anything so I walked up towards the glass to peek through and see if I spot my water bottle, not touching the door. She immediately yells at me and says I can't walk in the class. Seriously? If you bothered to actually help me you wouldn't assume I was doing that. I firmly tell her my intentions, then she yells at me and says I can't stand there because it makes the class nervous. Okay, relax lady. By now the teacher notices me and waves. I move away from the door and look at my phone so not to "make the class nervous." She meanwhile is talking to two other women making gestures at me saying I have to leave. The teacher pokes his head out with my water bottle and a smile, I thank him and I'm on my way. Receptionist lady, all you had to do was treat me like an actual patron and maybe offer to help by: -letting me know what time to come back? -getting the teacher's attention and letting him know for me? (Then you wouldn't have to question what the hell I was doing) -not sit there and do nothing then talk about me to the other students/teachers as I was standing there. When I left I didn't bother to say anything to the rude receptionist, but the ladies she was talking to did make a point to smile and say bye to me. Maybe they thought she overreacting too. I am so thankful for this yoga studio! I tried it on a whim having minimal yoga experience last October and after many months here, I have come to love so much what this studio adds to my everyday life. It's the perfect fusion of a strengthening practice that is also restful and refreshing. The instructors are friendly and encouraging. Most importantly, they create a space where I feel comfortable pushing myself while knowing that if I fail or it's a - that move just ain't happening today - there's no judgement. So overall I really like this place. My favorite classes are with Lisa and Ewa. The classes are very challenging but they do a good job of motivating you to get through the class. They are very sweet people and I appreciate that they will show you a correction or instruct you how to change positions. The only thing is that the classroom is very small and they fill the classes to maximum capacity of 35 which is WAY too many people for that small room. You dont really have space to move when there are that any people. Also, I really don't care for the owner. He is not as friendly/welcoming as the instructors or the receptionists. After a recommendation from a friend, I bought the groupon for this place where you get 20 yoga classes for $59. I went to my first class today, which was Power Yoga with Troy. I absolutely loved it here! The class was sufficiently challenging and I feel like I got a great stretch and workout; I felt fantastic afterwards. Troy was also a really great and encouraging teacher who made me feel comfortable, which was great because I was a little shy coming there for the first time and also coming off a yoga hiatus for several years. The studio is 90 degrees so you definitely need to bring water and a towel, but thankfully it didn't smell sweaty in there even though everyone was sweating. I highly recommend this place to anyone interested in yoga. The class I went to was not beginner; I managed to get by on my previous yoga knowledge of the poses and proper posture (I struggled just a bit, but I wasn't made to feel ashamed of it by the instructor or the flow of the class), but if you are completely new to yoga, it would probably be best to try the beginner classes since they explained the poses in the class a little but did not give the full tutorial on them like you'd get in a beginner class. But no matter your skill or flexibility or fitness level, you'll definitely feel welcome. Can't wait to go back! read more

I've tried a lot of hot yoga studios in Philly. Like did the whole $10 for 30 day trial at almost every hot yoga studio in town (it's a deal that can't be beat, so why not). I'm gonna be honest, out of all the studios I've tried, this is probably my favorite one. There's a lot of teachers for this studio, but honestly, I think they're all great. There's never one specific instructor I try to stick with, because no matter what time or day I go, I know it will be a good class. This studio does go through a faster flow (which I prefer) and focuses a lot on building strength in addition to twists/openings. If you haven't checked this studio out, definitely give it a shot! "Power yoga" isn't really yoga. Not only just factually speaking to the intentions of yogis in ancient India, but here's just my opinion. When I go to a yoga class, I am more so going to stretch, get some serenity, meditate, etc. These classes don't get me much of any of these. 75% of the class is spent in the usual sun salutation series (downward dog, plank, low plank, up dog, up, down, flat back, and repeat 1000 times). The other 25% is spent doing ab workouts disguised as yoga. Side planks and scissor kicks are killer, but they're just not yoga. My recommendation is to go if you're trying to get a workout in while being gentle on your joints, but just don't expect to get a zen yoga experience. read more

I really didn't like Philly Power Yoga. I'm a yoga teacher in LA, and come to visit my boyfriend in Philly quite often. I was craving yoga one weekend, and so I went to check out Philly Power Yoga. To me, this type of yoga really overlooks much of what's important about yoga. Throughout the class, I was horrified to see a majority of the class in terrible alignment, and the teacher was doing nothing about it. She was "walking around", but really just for the sake of "walking around." Some people were in extremely precarious positions, to the point where I'd be afraid that they might hurt themselves! The first thing I learned during my teacher training was safety, and I know firsthand, that during hot yoga one really has the capability of hurting themselves. I was a dancer for most of my life, and my extreme flexibility was quite dangerous in a hot yoga room. Because I had an instructor that wasn't paying attention to my alignment, I hurt my hip badly, and it's never been the same. Especially for all the beginners I saw in the room, it was so scary to me that the teacher wasn't giving them more attention. I also find it brutal for the body to just do pose after pose after pose etc. In the glory of getting the class to sweat, you're sacrificing alignment! The class I went to was extremely disappointing. If you want great yoga, please PLEASE please go to Dhyana Yoga. The flow is nice and smooth, and you sweat through the heat of your own body, not by the 110 degree room. The teachers there are extraordinary, especially at their daily 9:45 a.m. class. read more

I am pretty regular at Philly Power Yoga. I got semester passes since last year and have been doing yoga for 2 semesters. Overall I am very happy with the classes but since I am going here for pretty long time, I am also seeing some downsides. Pros: - A lot of time options (6am to 8pm) - Good location near Rittenhouse sq. - You actually feel like you are working out! I recommend Steve, Troy, Sara's class - The room is little bit heated but it's not HOT. Good temperature to sweat out. Cons: - They don't really teach you new poses. They charge you for workshop to learn new poses, which is pretty disappointing. - Class is usually pretty repetitive. So after almost a year, I am little bit bored. - The space gets VERY crowded for classes between 5pm-8pm. - If you are thinking of Pilates, I think the program here is pretty weak. I attended a Power class. I have never taken a Pilates class. This rating is for Yoga only. This place is small and they over sell the classes. I had some chicks foot in my face the whole time and one inch from my neighbor on each side. I am sure they need to oversell because of the real estate they have. Drop in classes are expensive and they charge 3 dollars to rent a mat. They didn't even clean the mat after we used it. The class was not as good of a work out as I got at a similar yoga style studio in University City. Shop around people you are not getting the best work out for your dollar. Instructor was nice, but her instructions were unclear and it was hard to know what pose was next. If I never had taken yoga at another studio this place might have gotten a better rating. If you are a beginner this is probably a great place to start. If you have a Groupon it is probably worth the deal. I was hoping to find a yoga studio closer to home so that I don't have to lug myself up to University City on the weekends to do yoga. For now I will stick to the commute. read more

Since my last review over 1 year ago, philly power yoga still amazes me. They accepted feedback and many things keep evolving. They have added new classes, increased frequency of some, and added varying degrees of levels of others such as yoga sculpt/meditation/ and stretch and restore etc, renovated the inside for more storage for clothes,shoes and coats, increased merchandise line, offer more workshops, and added lot more discounts and packages available for students and new and old members. The thing I have noticed that HAS NOT changed is how the staff and members of the yoga community treat the people. If it's your first time going or your 500th, The best way I can put it is they treat you like a old friend. They make you feel respected, valued, and comfortable. They genuinely care about the well-being of each person individually and are authentic. The staff is knowledgeable, attentive, and helpful, but more importantly they build relationships and connect with every single person. It all starts with the owner and founder, Steve Gold, who is truly an inspirational to his staff and in the yoga world. His strong leadership skills, guidance, and encouragement is reflected throughout all of ppy. He and his staff are always available for questions and concerns so you can ask Steve or any of them about anything really. The experience doesn't end when class is over! They are always helping people before and after class, outside the studio, pretty much anytime. It's fresh to see a place that still puts in such effort in helping others change their life and I am writing this just out of authentic appreciation for what they have done for me. Honestly, best yoga studio I've ever been to. These guys have gotten me through many a meh day while plugging through my PhD and I figured it's about time for me to write my dear friends/gurus/spirit guides/cheery asskickers at PPY a review. I've been doing yoga off and on for over 10 years now and gone to some great studios in a variety of cities I've lived in - LA, Colorado, NYC, Boston, and now Philly - as well as visited some gorgeous studios in Indonesia and Costa Rica. Let me tell you, though PPY may not have the frills of some of these spots (though it is definitely a beautiful studio too), the mental and physical workout aka "yoga high" you get here simply can not be beat. Most importantly, as has been mentioned in the reviews below, the instructors and the owner Steve are all just absolute gems. They make me think, laugh, and cry (no, not out of physical pain though Troy's goddess pose/push-up sequences have gotten me close). They also know how to be quiet and let you zone out during the wind-down and savasana at the end of the class. I've been living here for 3 and a half years and dropped off the radar for a bit a couple times - due to injuries, trips, and personal stuff - but they always welcome me back with open arms and a big smile. Great yoga studio for beginners. There's only one style of yoga here - hot vinyasa. The have a great range of class times. I always got a great sweat coming here but after a while, it gets boring. Some of the teachers will change it up just a little with the poses but the overall flow was pretty much the same and didn't have enough variety for me to want to continue going here. I practiced here for close to 2 years and even though I was starting to get bored, Teagan was the reason I continued to come here; she is also the reason I didn't realize how bored I was getting with the classes. Her Sunday morning classes were different from the regular vinyasa flow. She would mix in time to experiment and do something different each time. After she left, I continued to go there for a month or two but eventually stopped. The classes are good and get you moving and sweaty but don't have enough variety to keep going 3 times a week. Also it's right off rittenhouse sq which is a great location but soooo hard to find parking. After a while I got sick of going and searching for parking for 30-40 minutes before class. It ended up being too costly, time consuming, and I ended up irritated more than anything. Like I said before, great studio for beginners but as you get more advanced into yoga you'll find yourself bored. Variety is the key to workouts. My muscles got bored and eventually I didn't see any changes in my body. Price wise it's very reasonable and one of the cheapest in the city. The class packages are most cost effective and they do run specials from time to time. The staff is very friendly and I really liked them. The studio is very clean and well maintained. On first impression, I liked the space. It was clean and bright and the check in process was seamless (signed up online ahead of time). The studio itself is average size, but they crammed students in there like sardines - mats touching, no room for true swan dives or other arm movements of any real breadth. I didn't get kicked in the head, but came pretty close to getting smacked in the face a few times by my neighbor's twisting wingspan. Not a big deal, but a bit of a distraction. The class itself was taught quite well by Troy. I always appreciate when instructors place emphasis on breathing. It helps me zone out and get the most of the practice, which I really happened to need that day. There weren't a lot of advanced poses offered, but I usually add my own flair as I go. Still, it would have been nice to have some guided challenges. I usually go to another hot yoga studio that's a bit less expensive, but they didn't have a class in my time frame, so I opted to try this place. Overall, I think I'll try it again, especially since everyone was so nice (staff and fellow yogis included)! read more

I've been to yoga a handful of times in my life, and had done bikram only once before coming here. I was really scared because bikram is super intense (I felt like I wanted to die the first time), but wanted to try to get into it again. A lot of comparisons are made between this place and college of india, and I'll say now that I think both are really great, but they serve different purposes. Philly Power Yoga heats their room to only 90 degrees, which is a considerable difference from the standard 105 of bikram. Their sessions are also a little shorter, by about 15 mins. This structure is really helpful for people who are beginners or who want to go on a regular basis but can't take the full on intensity of regular bikram. I find the environment much more relaxing, the instructors more chill, and it's also a much higher end studio (read: yuppy, but not necessarily in a bad way). The only downside is that if you're looking for super intense workout to drop major pounds, this place will help but you may get more dramatic results with school of india. First time is free, so why not go? read more

My cousin introduced me to this place a year and a half ago and I try to schedule a visit here as often as I can. I absolutely detest any sort of Bikram yoga; it's all the moves I can't do! But the first time I set foot in this place I felt such an immense sense of relief, of non-judgment, I realized I may actually be able to accomplish 100+ degree yoga classes. And the reason is... power yoga seems to consist of all the moves I CAN do! Yay!! All the warriors, some triangle, maybe some pigeon... My legs definitely feel they've gotten a work out the next day. Steve and Troy are my favs. They correct you without making you feel like you've been corrected. The also have a beginner class which I highly recommend for newbies. And I know the studio has some pilates classes but I haven't ventured to those as of yet. You can easily change into your yoga garb at the studio but the showers aren't that conducive to a quick getaway. The last time I was there they hadn't yet started accepting credit cards so def bring cash and try to make it exact. FYI - grab a free class coupon off their internet site if you're strapped for cash but desperate for some downward dog in your life. Oh, and the class schedule which consists of a few each day. Had Troy for Thursday night Beginners Yoga and he rocked my sweat off. I really enjoyed his approach of not being competitive with others in the class but concentrating on your own practice and getting the most of your time there. He really emphasized that it was okay to make mistakes and to not worry about it because it would be adding stress when yoga should be doing the opposite of that. It really centered me. And I took 3 people who are new to yoga with me and they all loved the class as well. He was good to correct when needed and challenged individuals who were more advanced beginners. I find that newbies often comment on how it's hard to follow the moves because many times the names of poses are called out and you have to look around to figure out what's going on. I find that's true for 9/10 beginner classes I've gone to in all different studios. Unless you sign up for a 10 week beginners course, often the instructors are not doing all the moves with you so you have to rely on those attending to see what the moves are. I think this way of learning can be a little distressing, but once you realize that that's just how it is, it's okay to take a deep breath, look around to see what the move should look like, and take a stab at it. You're not cheating. :) And he'll come over and tweak you. This studio is great for those who like a very heated studio but not as hot as Bikram. I totally recommend this place and especially this class-- you spend a lot of time perfecting your stances instead of trying to cram many moves into one time period. If you're more advanced you may benefit from coming, but you won't be as challenged (we didn't do binding, or very many complicated variations of poses)-- an all levels class at this place would suit you better. read more
