I had an annuity with this company from 2005 to the present. I began making withdrawals after retirement with good results until I requested the final withdrawal. The customer service reps were pollte, as always. When I received the request for signature, my checking account number was wrong. I spoke with four reps who insisted that the account number was the same as previous withdrawals. I finally signed a document with the correct number and it was still forwarded to my bank with the wrong number. I contacted my bank who changed the account number and deposited it. I called Thrivent who informed me that if the transfer was rejected, which it would have been, it would be 8 to 9 days to resend it. I alledge that this company deliberately tried to squeeze out a few more days. Tell me I am wrong about my conclusions. I'm obviously done with them. read more

Thrivent is too hard to work with. I opened an account on-line and it took over a month to receive a debit card in the mail. They are always pleasant on the phone but never seem to know how to help or get the answers to help you. I attempted to close the account due to not being able to easily make deposit at a Co-op affiliated ATM which Thrivent claims to be part of and was told that if I were to close my account there would be a fee. A fee for what? Not being able to deposit money in my account. To hell with this shady assed company. Save your frustrations and find a local credit union that has a branch in your town. read more

I see three reviews here that are not good. That is certainly not encouraging, but they seem to be at odds with what I have researched about this company. I have just purchased a Medicare Supplemental High Deductible Plan F policy. The plan does not become effective until June 1st, therefore I have not yet experienced claims service. I will only comment on the excellent, courteous and helpful conversation with Jessie Fish. I do not recall if she works at the Appleton, Wisconsin Operations Center or the Minneapolis, Minnesota Corporate Offices. She spent a considerable amount of time with me on the phone answering all of my questions about the policy, and I decided to purchase. Should I discover as time goes by that my claims experience (or anything else) is below par, I will update this review. However, just based on the expert and knowledgeable help I received, along with "A++ A.M. Best" review as well as a low-cost policy premium, I am willing to try them out. For the excellent help and information about their policy that I received on the phone, I give a 5-star review. The FTC states that mortgage applicants have the right to hear back on an application within 30 days, and this turned into a 7+ week ordeal. We provided all of the necessary documents within the first day they were requested, and as the weeks went by we would go 8+ days without hearing back, or would receive requests for documents that were not initially requested, told that we were the ones slowing the process (in the hottest real estate market since the early 2000s, may I add). When these lags would happen, I would try calling..no call back! At the end of this 7-8 week saga, we ended up getting denied for ever-changing reasons that were never really made clear. For those wondering about the end of this story, we ended up getting approved by a couple of other lenders and were able to pull the trigger on successfully making an offer, but Thrivent CU ended up being a hindrance more than anything. This isn't a dig at Thrivent as a whole, their banking and investment team is second to none, but the Credit Union seems to be on a different page. If you know someone personally here, by all means go for it because you may receive excellent service; however, for first time home buyers, I would stay far far away. read more

Avoid Thrivent at all costs. Be ready to surrender half your life to prove you have a valid claim. Awful customer service. They won't answer you back on the telephone - despite their claim of being a "fraternal" organization. They have no common courtesy. The agent walked away from providing needed assistance... he claimed Thrivent's "legal department" told him to not get involved. Thrivent deserves zero stars. Whose money is it, anyway? Worst. Customer. Service. Ever. For years I've heard my mom talk about "that nice Steve from Thrivent". Recently, due to cognitive impairment, her POA went into effect. I contacted "Steve", sent him all of the POA paperwork, changed her address, email, and phone number (she moved from FL to WI). I asked him to send a statement listing all of the accounts she had with him (1 month ago). He was indeed nice, and assured me the info would arrive within a week. Still waiting! I tried to log onto her Thrivent account. It wouldn't let me log in. I called. I was told that as POA, I wasn't allowed access to her account online. Weird, huh? Makes it hard (impossible) to manage my mom's finances when I have no access to her accounts. She currently has a checking and savings account with Thrivent with $1 in each account. They are charging her $12/account/quarter for being "under the required amount". I called them last week and asked that these two accounts be closed out. I also requested that the money in her other savings/checking account (yes, she has 4 checking/savings accounts with Thrivent) be mailed to her, and that those accounts be closed out as well (total amount of money in the combined accounts? Less than $1000). I instructed them to take her RMD out of her IRA now, as we are trying to consolidate things and get all of her financial affairs in order. They assured me this would be done within 2 business days, and signed off with a "God bless", which is apparently code for "f you". Over 1 week later, after checking her US Bank online accounts (which US Bank graciously allows me access to) and the mail, it became apparent that none of the above actions have been taken. I called Thrivent again. First, the lady in the credit union told me their computer system was being updated so she couldn't give me any information, and suggested I "try back tomorrow". Hmmm. So I called another department (annuities), identified myself and my concern, and was put on hold for 15 minutes. Strange...I hadn't had long hold times in the past. I hung up, called back, and immediately got a person...until I identified myself. He then put me on hold for 45 minutes. When he came back, he said there had been some "suspicious activity" on my mom's account last week, so he couldn't provide me with any information over the phone. From what I can see, there has been no activity of any kind on her accounts, suspicious or otherwise. Apparently, one of Thrivent's associates had concerns that she wasn't actually speaking to my mom/me. Did he need my POA sent again? No, he knew it was in effect and that he was speaking to me. What if my (demented) mom called for info on her accounts, could she get information? "No can do. No information can be given over the phone. Or internet." I'm not sure if this is temporary or forever, but I suspect the latter. He said I was welcome to fax them. I'll try that today, but based upon my dealings with Thrivent, I'm about 0.0000009% confident that it will work. I asked about the "suspicious activity". "I can't give any info over the phone". I informed him of my phone call to Thrivent last week, and asked him if her RMD had been taken, or her accounts closed as requested. "Sorry, no info can be given". As POA, why wasn't I notified of the "identity theft"? I can tell you why...because they know darn well that they were talking to me last week, and I requested to close out accounts. Apparently you're allowed to put money in, but not allowed to take it out. That is considered "suspicious activity". They know that they spoke to me last week, but are refusing to take the requested actions on my mom's account. Maybe they plan on collecting her $12 quarterly fees for all of eternity?! I have dealt with numerous financial institutions over the past few months getting my mother's financial affairs in order. Pleasant companies, professional companies. I have not had any experience remotely resembling the one I've had with Thrivent. Thrivent doesn't call, take, or return calls when they disapprove of what you're doing (with your own money). They'll chastise you, give you the runaround, lie, be rude, put you on interminable holds, and refuse to provide you with any information on your own accounts. They say they'll mail things to you, but they don't. All of this from a "Christian" company. I cannot get my mom's money out of there soon enough. Terrible customer service, absolutely terrible. "God bless", Thrivent. UPDATE: over 1 week since sending them all of the requested info via fax, and nothing has been done. When I call they transfer me from one person to another, but nobody can tell me a thing. I'd give them zero stars if it were possible. Definitely contacting FINRA and filing a complaint. read more

Thrivent Financial sells various forms of insurance and concentrates on people of the Lutheran faith. Once the policy was purchased and numerous payments were made over numerous years, the Midwest agent did not answer phone call messages, did not follow up on questions delivered in writing to his office and will not and does not update the policy holder of changes to the policy. These are egrigious failures. Worse than these failures, Thrivent Financial Staff at the corporate offices in Appleton, WI make changes to the policy and DOES NOT notify the policyholder via mail or phone calls. I have all of the documentation. Even worse, Thrivent sells Long Term Care Insurance. Long Term Care policies are sold to the very Elderly and needed by the very Elderly when they are suffering from illnesses or conditions associated with being the very Elderly. Do not conduct insurance business with this financial firm. They cannot be trusted. read more
