The therapist I had was wonderful....But when they charged my debit card without my permission, I got livid! And apparently...I'm not the only person that this company has done this to. My husband and I were seeing a marriage counselor through Thriveworks. She was amazing. However, the billing department was a nightmare. They did unauthorized debits from my account not once but numerous times. After 3 months of not having counseling, again they took out money without me authorizing it or knowing why. You get the runaround from billing. Then they deny taking the money out even though you have clear proof (account transactions). I was even told that they removed my card from file and they STILL took money out of my account. It's a real shame because the counselor was wonderful. Thriveworks needs to stop taking money out of people's accounts without prior authorization and not lie about taking the credit card off file. read more

There is , however , one Counselor who stands above the rest . Her name is Kathleen Liakos LICSW . Most counselors recieve the same education , not all are blessed with the ability to connect with their clients . No one , in my opinion , does it better than Kathleen . How good is she ? If I could rate Thriveworks with zero stars, I would. When looking for a therapist, I found Thriveworks. I asked if they took my insurance, and they stated that they did (Anthem). Both providers accepted my insurance. After only two sessions, I received a bill. The bill stated that my insurance does not cover this provider. I contacted my provider and she stated that they do in fact take my insurance. She said that they would take care of the issue. I went once more, and again found out that they had not resolved the issue. For only THREE sessions, my bill was $985!!! And to add insult to injury, they automatically took out $500 from my account without my consent or permission. They did this less than two weeks after I brought up the concern about insurance not covering my sessions. I do not believe this is ethical. When I contacted them about this, I received no response. Thriveworks was certainly quick to get sessions booked for me, but their customer service is NON EXISTENT. I will be looking into legal recourse. Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews till after they had scam me and I see many people have had the same experience. fraudulent billing deducting money from your bank account without notification and billing for Appointments that were never made or completed. They also deducted money from my account 10 months after I stop going there with no notification and no explanation. It's funny all of the Thriveworks locations seem to have fairly bad reviews, going on years yet nothing has been done but a copy and paste apology that most companies have. I tried to use Thriveworks for my dissociation issues but the person I saw didn't seem to understand my issues and printed out sheets that one could easily Google on techniques on how to stay grounded, on top of that to get a proper diagnosis costs so much out of pocket that I couldn't afford it. And she hinted to that saying it's 600 something dollars to get a full mental evaluation, already assuming I couldn't afford it. We need to fix the mental health care system, I just have to deal with my problems on my own, I could've used Google too instead of spending 150 to have a "therapist" tell me the same. I should've searched for someone who understands my problems, the issue lies with not being able to get a proper diagnosis due to the price. read more

This companies billing department is completely clueless. Over the last 6 months of using them for my sessions they have miss billed me and doubled billed me and the wrong insurance. I am now being forced to pay insurance for the amount thriveworks billed. What did the billing department say? "We are sorry. I'll make a note" no solutions or plans of action to correct THEIR error. I was hospitalized for an eating disorder last year, and started my outpatient with Thriveworks because the NP's description said she had experience with these concerns. Not only was she extremely dismissive and non-empathetic, but she asked for my weight every session (knowing I have been medically stable for a while) and even praised me for losing weight. In ED recovery, clients should be encouraged to throw their scales out, not continue to weigh themselves. I would absolutely not recommend this company based on my experience. read more

Do Not Use This Company! Corporate called us less than 24 hours before our appointment to tell us the provider was no longer accepting Tricare (military healthcare). Our visit was canceled, but we were still charged. They did eventually make the correction, but informed us that there were no other alternative counselors in the area. So we verbally canceled our account. 8 months later we found out that they were still charging us the monthly online fee. When we talked to billing and asked for a reimbursement they denied us. Beware - they only want your money. They don't really care about you as a patient. Thrive was recommended to me for treatment for an eating disorder. I made my appointment and gave them my credit card number so they could charge a one time $99 intake fee (Really? I've been to therapy before and have never heard anything of the sort). I talked to the receptionist about wanting to come in to talk about food related issues. She assigned me to a therapist who does not treat eating disorders or food issues. I felt bad for the guy. Neither one of us had any clue about what to do for the hour except for us to talk about my behavior and for him to let me know that I definitely have an eating disorder. Thanks! I've already been told that by five other doctors and therapists. I wasn't looking for a diagnosis. I was looking for treatment. Do yourself a favor. Finding a therapist who is available in the evenings or weekends is a pain so I was happy when I found this practice. I saw a therapist here a few months back, but I didn't click with her and decided to seek a different one. However, when I called to make an appointment with someone else, I was told I need to subscribe and pay an exorbitant fee if I wanted to see someone outside of regular business hours. I was told this was a new policy. It seems this practice is more about nickeling and diming people who want to see a therapist rather than getting them help. Thriveworks is proof that you can't run a counselling business as a massive-scale enterprise. The counselor I met was fine, even though it was not a professional environment. It looked like a break room at Home Depot. There was little privacy. However, by main issues came from trying to secure a refund of the absurd $99 enrollment fee. I called 2 days after my appointment to request a refund. I was told they would confirm the refund by phone or email, but no confirmation arrived. I called the next week, same conversation, same lack of result. I called a 3rd time, same old same old. I started getting stern by the 4th email and someone told me they would escalate it to an owner, who finally fulfilled my request. I know they would have rather me gone away, but come on, they should have done better than this. read more

The therapist that they put us in touch with for my daughter was absolutely fabulous and we were seeing signs of improvement. The problem relied in Thriveworks that they refused to charge my insurance when the visits were 100% covered and started charging our credit cards without our approval. Therapy started for my daughter in September 2021 and charges started immediately after. When you call customer service their hands are tied and have NO access to credit the account. After 4 months of no relief, contacted the BBB only to find out Thriveworks has an F rating and is not accredited by the BBB. They tried contacting the company and had no solution. If your insurance covers any therapist and the company Thriveworks is the middleman company be very careful! read more

I have been a patron of therapists/life coaches for the past 15 years or so and I would NOT recommend this office. I have been seeing a doctor here for a year or perhaps a little more than a year and called to cancel a same day appointment last week. I called at 11am to cancel a 6:15pm appointment. I have NEVER missed an appointment in a year or more of going there. I am not a flaky patient and although I felt bad cancelling same day, I had an impromptu/emergency meeting with the CFO of the college I work for and really did not have much choice. The meeting ended up being 6 hours long and I was glad I had cancelled as I never would have made it from Boston to Cambridge, using public transport at rush hour. I knew that there was a financial penalty for cancelling BUT I never thought it would be ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! If I were to cancel same day at my dermatologists office the charge is $24 but $100?!?!?! I am going to need therapy just from this source of aggravation! I also found it weird that even if you had been on the same meds for a year or MORE they still wanted to see you every month.... Obviously more $$$$ (insurance) for them! One would hope that mental health doctors would be a bit kinder and a bit less financially motivated! read more

I never felt so strongly about something to the point of writing a negative review. I usually read them lol that's how you know it's bad. Billing department gets 1 star. My therapist gets 5 stars. It was sad to move on from such a wonderful therapist but the issues I experienced with the billing department were so out of this world stressful that it didn't make sense to pay for therapy only to have endless stress and anxiety about safeguarding my money from these people. I would get billed at random times for random amounts and no one at Billing had an answer why it was happening. After hours long conversations with the head of the department and my health insurance they still couldn't figure it out and decided to give me 3 sessions co-pay free for all my troubles. Then it happened again, I got charged a $99 no-show fee out of no where!! Then I was told I had zero balance by a representative and a week later told I owed $150. They messed up the co-pay amount several times...long story short I've about had it. The insurmountable time spent on safeguarding my money just wasn't worth it anymore. They were billing me $40 for a membership fee, $175 for my 12 year old to attend each counseling session (my insurance supposedly covered $70 of it. My boyfriend and I are seeing a relationship counselor at Thrive Boston right now. We just had our second appointment the other day, and had pretty good "homework" to work on over the past few weeks since our first appointment. Overall, we think it's going pretty well. We like the atmosphere of the office, and also how it caters to working individuals, like my boyfriend and myself. Our first appointment was a little awkward because I think we frightened our counselor a bit since we couldn't stop bickering for an hour, but I'm sure he has seen worse. haha... We do see many couples go in and out of the office whenever we are there, so it shows Thrive Boston has a large patient population - good sign. My boyfriend and I are probably the "only" couple in our 20s who are seeking a counselor, and it's great that we don't feel like we're discriminated against since we are young; and most couples who seek relationship/marriage counseling tend to be older, married, or have children (we have a dog, so that sort of counts). We (my boyfriend and I) think Thrive Boston are very prompt and also specifically, our counselor is very honest and unbiased. Looking forward to our 3rd appointment. read more

A friend recommended this place to me when I wanted to talk to someone after a (lame!) breakup. I'm not great with directions and thought I might have a hard time finding the office inside the building but there were a lot of signs and I found my way up easier than anticipated. Nice waiting area- keurig coffee and comfy seating but no secretary/staff to greet you. That ended up being no big deal because one of the Counselors came out to greet me (I was a little early). Without too much detail- I really really appreciated my time with my counselor. I was nervous but I found her to be really nice and easy to talk to. Also insightful- provided a new perspective that helped a lot. Great experience. read more

I called this place after trying to call 3 other counseling centers and only reaching voicemails. The girl on the phone was super nice and I scheduled an appointment for two days later. I think that's sort of their thing, they can get you in to see a counselor without waiting, which is pretty great. The call to schedule an appointment did take at least 20 minutes, as I had to give them my insurance info, and a credit card as a deposit for the appointment. The practice is in an older building, but the actual office space is really warm and inviting. Without getting too personal, I was pleasantly surprised to find my counselor to be really helpful and insightful. I've had 2 appointments and so far so good! read more

I would NEVER recommend anyone to go through this company to see a therapist!!! The therapists are ok, how ever the company is HORRIBLE! When I called to set up an appointment the guy on the phone told me I was covered with the insurance and information I had given him. Well...after about 3 visits I received a bill stating I owed them about $300, now mind you, I was already paying a $30 copay each time. Which I found out from my insurance company that was wrong. I saw on their webpage no waiting and frequently same day appointments. A young woman called to book me an appt. at the Takoma Park facility *note: there are three other facilities in the area. In a flash, she responded in a haughty pitch, "They arent taking clients". What happened to no waiting and same day appts.? She further did not explore appts. at the other locations with me. I've tried to set up an appointment at Thriveworks twice now, and both times, the person on the phone left me feeling unsafe. One answered the phone simply with "HELLO." I felt put off by the lack of professionalism, but I called back at a later date to see if perhaps I'd just caught someone on a bad day. The second person helped set me up with an appointment, but she wouldn't give me the full name of the person she assigned my intake with, and when I asked additional questions about this person's areas of expertise, she reacted as though I were at fault for asking. I just asked a simple question. I wanted further information to determine the suitability of a counselor or therapist for my needs. She explained why my new question should have been asked earlier, and that I would need to ask these things now to the person she'd assigned to me. Questions frustrated her. My needs were not important. She quickly recreated the abusive dynamic I was hoping to seek treatment and healing from. That's just my best explanation of what happened and my experience. The main issue is that twice now, the people taking phone calls for Thriveworks left me feeling unsafe. If that is how potential clients are treated, I would feel even less safe discovering how the company treats clients in therapy. Good luck to anyone who gives them a shot. This company told me in the beginning that the cost for their counseling would be 99$ as an initial fee and 39$ per month thereafter. They took my insurance information and stated that it would not be used but they needed it to keep a record of me in file. The initial sessions were fine but sometimes I could not get the right appt. Or they would not cancel an appt for me or when I did cancel they would charge me for it any ways. There have been times where I was charged for sessions that never took place and would cause addition stress on me to call and be on the phone with them for hours trying to remove a charge. The billing dept cannot ever be contacted under any circumstances. They will not connect me even through a representative or manager and I could not get a clear explanation about things. I decided it was not worth they headache too try and keep going with then it was too stressful so decided to cancel my membership in January. Today I get my insurance claims statement in the mail to see Thriveworks has been filing claims through my insurance company all through this year until now 10 claims filed fraudulently and insurance did not cover any of the cost and now they are trying to foot me with a huge bill that should have never been processed. I don't think the billing dept is able to be contacted in the phone because that is where all the fraud is taking place. I closed my credit card and requested a new one so they don't take my money and I also called my insurance and reported this company as fraudulent and to not process any claims through them any more. Very easy to work with. It's wonderful that they have so many evening openings so you can't work your counseling around your schedule. I also had trouble in the past with other counseling offices with setting up my first appointment, so I was very thankful to Thriveworks for making it pretty painless to get started. Some people have complained about the $99 yearly fee, but it was explained to me as being the money out of which the 24/7 on call counselors are paid, which I understood. Well, you get told something about it being for admin fees and other services such as being able to talk to your therapist over email. SO IS IT FAIR TO TAKE SUCH A FEE when your therapist right off the bat tells you that she does NOT do email sessions or any type of session at any time other than appointment times during a very small window on a Wednesday or Saturday night? NO, it's NOT FAIR and IT's NOT RIGHT and people in the 'business' of 'helping' others should NOT try to pull this nonsense. And when you write a polite email asking for confirmation of cancelled appointments to ensure you are NOT charged you should receive a REPLY. You should NOT BE IGNORED and then have to talk to some very indifferent and slow person in the accounts section because NOBODY COULD BE BOTHERED TO ANSWER YOUR EMAIL. Also: The building is full of smoke on a Saturday so if you like inhaling that great! If late because your cab driver claimed to be confused by the address and the therapist has nobody coming in after and you are a new patient, the counselor will still not choose to give you any extra time. Tell me about another profession where you don't have to put in extra time sometimes? If it was an ongoing situation you'd tell your client they must be on time but honestly make a little effort for a first visit with a person who obviously arrived late through no fault of their own. I'll keep searching for services which don't make me feel worried about getting ripped off, where my therapist is more available that two nights a week for a two-three hour period - cause that is actually ridiculous. read more
