I actually wasn't thrilled with this spot the first couple of times I tried them in years past, but recently came across them and gave them another go and I'm very glad I did. They really seem to have come into their own and everything we had was many tiers above our previous experience. Meat was smoky, juicy, and no sauce was even needed - honestly would have diminished the enjoyment of that perfectly seasoned bark. The menu is both traditional and eclectic with some fun twists like the BBQ nachos I particularly enjoyed. I'd say 3.5 stars. We got the smoked wings, sausage and the bacon sliders to share between 3 people. Hands down, the smoked wings were delicious! Great flavor and super tender. The sausage came precut which included a bunch of pieces of meat. It would have been better to let us cut it ourselves. It got a bit greasy as well and might have been better on a bun instead of a la carte. Flavor wise, my friends enjoyed it more than I did. The bacon sliders had thick cut bacon with slaw. One of them was mostly burnt. The bun was burnt (totally black on one side) and some of the bacon slices were burnt. I couldn't get that taste out of my mouth. My friends had the other one and they said it was better than what I had. The 3 boxes turned out to be about $50 which seems to be standard prices these days. read more

The great food is not even the best part of Thumbs Up. It's Myles, who is such a friendly guy. He forgot to charge me for a soda water and was gracious enough to give it to me for free. Given that restaurants are already struggling with inflation when it comes to food pricing, this was very generous and I made sure to tip him extra to compensate. We got the bacon and corn bread ball's and both were some of the best I've ever had. Myles also kept on checking on us and is just a really friendly guy overall. He is the definition of good vibes and that his food is so tasty is icing on the cake. I'm now back in Seattle and have thought about their food a few times. That's how good it is! read more

Tried the 4 meat/3 side combo at this pop up when we were at an event at Roadies Brewing Co. in Vista. For the meats, we had the brisket, chicken wings, ribs, and pulled pork. For the sides, we had the mac and cheese, collard greens, and the cornbread balls. Everything was outstanding, but my favorites on the meats were probably the ribs and the pulled pork. I also thought the mac and cheese was especially unique and delicious. I hate bbq that's drenched in sauce - Myles makes his bbq dry and you can add the sauce to your liking. He had 3 sauces available that were all tasty. None of the sauces were too sweet (another pet peeve), and one was super spicy which we all loved. Originally had their food a couple years ago at the Burgeon in Escondido and loved it then. Found myself in Carlsbad yesterday and saw they were at the Yarrow location Burgeon and went specifically again for the food. It may have been even better than what I had before. All 3 items I got were seriously perfection and all paired well together. The brisket was fall apart tender, the corn salad had a nice bit of acid to cut through some of the fat of brisket and cream from mac & cheese. If you're in the area give them a visit, it rivals any bbq I've had in the SD County area. To top it off they are both very nice people and make sure you enjoy your food. We were so excited when they started popping up around the county again. The food is made with love and it shows! My favorite part of knowing them, and being a long time supporter of their business is that they are the crazy most fun people, who want you to enjoy the entire experience of your food. Good location, amazing vibes and insanely good eats. We are big fans of any food they offer to our mouths - faves are the brisket, the glow slaw, Mac n cheese, cheese balls, sausages. No matter your bbq tastes, they serve their gorgeously and well prepared meat naked - you can sauce it up or down, and their sauce options are wildly varied enough that you can choose your own delicious adventure. The last time we enjoyed a meal with them was a couple of weeks ago, and Eric was also working. First time trying this place. Some of my employees told me to go here and I would love it. Well, they were not wrong. I haven't had good BBQ since I left Texas. But I have to say, this is amazing. I got the Sasquatch Sandwich and a side of BBQ beans with a taste of brisket. The brisket is smoked and slow cooked to make it good and tender. The pulled pork sandwich was terrific. I love rib tips--and they are very good here--but their pulled pork has converted me. It is amazingly moist and tender and you get a ton of it. I will never order anything else from these folks. It is pulled pork for me until death do we part. It is absolutely delicious. For the sides, we tried the "Glow Slaw," the "Smackaroni" and cheese (hey, I don't make these names up), the cornbread balls, and the BBQ beans. The Glow Slaw is a mustard-based coleslaw and it is tangy and outstanding. The BBQ beans are also terrific. The cornbread balls (and you get a bunch of them) are a great accompaniment to good BBQ. I didn't love the mac and cheese--it was fine but it just wasn't as creamy as I would have liked. I found myself longing a little bit for that box of Kraft mac and cheese back at home. Oh well. I travel for a living and try the best BBQ places in the country. This week I went to Carlsbad CA and tried Thumbs Up! My usual order is brisket, pulled pork and potatoe salad. Here I had to try their bacon and sausage as well. Unfortunately, they don't serve potato salad. The brisket was well seasoned and a smoky flavor, but the texture was a bit disappointing for me. It was rather dry. The stars of the show was all pork. I enjoyed the pulled pork so much on it's own due to amazing flavor, I didn't even need to add BBQ sauce! They're bacon is excellent. I appreciate that the sausage had real texture and the flavor was good. I would maybe go for a bit stronger flavor and add more spices. I love pickled red onions, but I felt that these were missing a tad of sweetness. Also, the pickles were quite different than the pickles I had at other places. I have had my share of bbq around the US but wow, Myles and Hailee are absolutely crushing the bbq game with their pop ups around north county. The smokiness of the rib tips with the most tender fall off the bone flavorful meat I have had anywhere east of Austin. The pulled pork also had great bark AND the variety of bbq sauces? All were so savory, not overly sweet, and packed with flavor. Phenomenal! The sides were both delicious, especially those corn bread balls (crispy edge to cornbread ratio was divine!). Had our first time trying Thumbs Up at Belching Beaver's Oceanside tap room. We come here just about every week and look forward to the rotating food trucks they have daily (as breweries cannot serve booze without food). The menu is quite large with a variety of meats & sides to try. For today, we opted to share a plate of rib tips, with mac n' cheese and their gooey "cheese balls". Our friends got the brisket, corn salad, collard greens with sweet potatoes, cheese balls and they loved it all. Prices may seem high at first, but you have to factor in how much time and effort goes into cooking and smoking BBQ, plus they give you a ton of meat on your plate. I think $14 for 1 main and 2 sides is just fine. Add two more dollars, for $16, and you can get 2 mains plus 2 sides. I didn't even see this option at first otherwise I would have chosen that. Next time I would like to try their sammiches - there's such a variety on the menu. I added photos of their latest menu and prices (during COVID) so check it out and swing by Belching. Okay, hands down, best bbq I've had since moving to North County and a strong contender for best bbq I've had in San Diego. They had their stand up at Dogleg Brew Co. We ordered the Black Garlic Sausage (which they make themselves), Brisket, Rib Tips, Mac n' Cheese, BBQ Beans, and the Cornbread Balls - yes we were hungry :) Every, single, thing we ate was a 10/10. This has to be the best smoked meat I have had here in San Diego! Why did I say smoked meat and not BBQ? Because as their shirts say "Our Meat Come Naked"! So many places smother their meat with sauce, not Thumbs-Up! You get true smoked meat flavor and then can add the sauce of your choice in the amount you need to add to the amazing flavor of the meat profile. Most of the time I just savored the meat in all its natural being. Now don't get the idea that their sauce isn't any good, it's is, but man that smoked meat perfection is heavenly. They had 3 sauces to choose from. The OG which was my personal favorite. The sunshine sauce which is mustard based, and finally the laZer which has a MAJOR kick to it thanks to that reaper chile! You have to have sides with your meal and they didn't disappoint either. The BBQ beans had great flavor and a lil kick to them. And the slaw and Mac and cheese were just as delicious. The owners are equally as amazing with excellent customer service and attitude! If you have a chance to check them out at a local brewery do so, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed!
