Service was upbeat and attentive from Alex from the moment we sat down. The short rib pasta was one of the best pasta dishes I've had in a long time, rich, balanced, and clearly made with a lot of care. You can tell there's real pride coming out of the kitchen. The beer and spirits list is also excellent, especially if you appreciate good craft beer. Having Russian River Brewing Company on tap all the time is a huge plus and not something you find everywhere. Definitely a spot worth coming back to. read more

This is one of our favorite spots for a nice casual date. We live in Del Mar and will drive for good food. I typically order the beef ribs and ask for light bbq sauce. They are AMAZING!!! I consider myself a connoisseur of beef ribs.... They are perfectly rendered and most importantly, they are CONSISTENT! The sides are good, I like the Cajun or steak fries. They also have a good happy hour menu. The ranch is homemade and that is super important lol. Typically the service is pretty good. This last time we went we were served by Andy, he is a happy person, very attentive and proactive. I'm literally going to ask for him every time. He made our experience wonderful. Happy hour prices are great. Enzos old fashioned was perfect and flavorful The food came out fast for everything The staff was hospitablre, friendly and attentive The bbq sauce was really good! I expected the meat on the baby back ribs to fall off the bone. The service and staff were great!! We were a party of 10 and they took really good care of us!! The setting is a fun sports bar setting. The three stars are for the food. We ordered almost every kind of meat and none were that good. The fried pickles, nachos, and cornbread were good but everything else was bleh. I'm pretty sure everything is pre prepared buffet style because things came out minutes after we ordered them. I have been lucky enough to eat some pretty great barbecue in my life from Franklin's barbecue in Austin to a bunch of random spots all over the south. I'm a brisket guy so today when I saw this restaurant that apparently is new I thought hey, let's give it a try. Easy parking, nice service and a really nice big interior with a good bar. Everything lined up including the option to get burnt ends brisket sandwich. That's my fave. When it came out with big chunks of brisket so I want let's eat. The problem started When my big chunks of brisket were mostly fat and uneditable. Sauce seemed pretty good, portion pretty good and again good service. I think I would probably give it one more chance and be very specific about how I like my brisket lean meaty 80% meat 20% fat. Happy hour menu looked pretty good so maybe I'll do that. I might drive 100 miles, or in this case about 10 miles, for great barbecue. Either you love it or you don't. San Diego is hardly known for its barbecue but there are a few very good spots, if you know where to look. This specific location of Enzo's--in Encinitas, on a very busy corner--may be a little haunted. There have been a number of different businesses here over the years. It is a prime location but I am sure the rent is sky high. You walk in and it is just one big room. Interestingly, they have a large refrigerator at the front with beers for sale. I suspect this is mostly for take-out orders. There is no floor covering inside--it's just a slab--so it can get noisy. I'm good with that. It's a barbecue joint. It should be loud and a little rough around the edges. Leave your suit and tie at home. You get about 12 menus at the start--the regular (double-sided) menu, specials menu, drinks menu , etc.--and it can take some time to navigate all of them. Oddly, they also offer Italian food and pizzas, but ok, if that's what you want, you can get that here. The draft beer options are extensive and excellent. Many very good local beers are represented. We didn't want to gorge on giant appetizers so we ordered the onion rings--normally a side dish--for an appetizer. They were good and crispy and not greasy. I liked them. To get a sense of their greatest hits, we ordered the "American Feast." It says it can serve two to three people and I agree with that. It is a LOT of food. You get baby back ribs, tri-tip, brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and hot links. The pulled pork was good. The hot links consisted of a few slices of a hot link, instead of a full link or "links" like the menu said. Nothing was bad. Everything was ok. Separately, we tried the pulled pork sandwich and that was good. All of the sandwiches and barbecue platters come with beans and coleslaw. The beans and coleslaw were fine. The cornbread which came with the Feast was just a tad sweet and was very nice. Here's a gripe: most barbecue places allow you to pick your sides. Here, you are stuck with beans and coleslaw. Want mac and cheese or a different side instead? Extra charge. Our service was very good. The portions were generous. The food was fine but I think there is some room for improvement. Went there first time to watch the Chargers Chiefs game. On YouTube so a bit complicated for them to show, eventually got the game up. Happy Hour was good although mixed drinks ave. Stick with beer. Good selection. Pulled pork best flavor and great sweet potato fries. Beef rib just ok. Brisket above average and tasty. Waitress was very good and put up Padres game for us also. Another perfect dinner here! You can't miss with the Italian menu or the BBQ menu. The service was perfect, thank you, Alex! The food could easily save for lunch tomorrow, but it's too good to stop eating. Our favorites for tonight were huge portions made with fresh ingredients, as always! See the pics below. Passed by here a few times, had the urge for BBQ and we were close, so it was perfect. Large building, ample seating, no wait, nice size smoker out front, quick service. We were seated really quickly; the waitress was nice. We ordered and shared Texas smoked brisket platter, 1/2 lb. of burnt ends (I mean you have to order if they are on the menu, right?) smoked sausage, for our sides we went with Cornbread, mac and cheese and the beans. The positives: the brisket was cooked well; the sausage had a nice snap to it and good flavor. The negatives: About half the burnt ends, were just fat. Yes, I know that Burn ends are "fatty" I always make burnt ends when I smoke a brisket, but it should be "meat candy" not "fat candy". I understand that here and there you get a few not as great pieces, but it was about half of them here. The other negative is that everything was doused in BBQ sauce. I am used to BBQ sauce coming on the side or to table, if I were to go back, I would make sure to order it on the side as I was not 100% keen on the sauce. The Ok's: The sides, both the beans and the mac and cheese were ok, not great, not terrible. The cornbread tasted more out of the box than scratch. read more

We love this place! The brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwich are favorites. The beans are amazing. I also love the salad that they do that has a huge scoop of bbq in it. AMAZING! A pretty typical San Diego dining spot, with all its plusses and minuses. If you're in the mood for casual, slightly loud bar-like vibes with ample, if run-of-the-mill bbq, then you could do worse. Prices are reasonable, given the location. But if you would like to eat quality bbq, then you could almost certainly do better. It comes down to the preparation itself: unfortunately it is not that great. The trip-tip was leathery (and drowning in sauce), the pulled chicken and burnt ends were both dry. I hope that this is only due to prep and not the quality of the meat they are using. I also should say something about service. I recognize how hard waitstaff work and they are told to be positive and upbeat if they want to remain employed and get decent tips (which I also know is not a given). But the two folks who waited on our large party of ten were just a bit too plastic in their positivity. Normally, I like to give more thorough reviews, but Enzo's BBQ and Ale House is so much of what dining in San Diego normally is: playing that same song over and over and over again. After losing our beloved BDUBs (this location was just special, trust me), I couldn't ask for a better spot to open up in its place. The beer menu is fantastic, providing lots of stout options, which are a critical component of any solid "ale house." The most important things I should note is that they cooked my burger rare to perfection upon request & have fried pickles beyond imagination. Chips for fried pickles are always superior. Lastly, I was delighted to see our favorite bartender from Breakwater Brewing works here. What more could you ask for? As a BBQ restaurant, it 's pretty mediocre and expensive. My $11 beef rib was described as a large Wagyu rib by the waitress, but was very disappointing. The portion was not the large rib described, but a small rib with a little meat and a second part of a bone with no meat at all. There was no hint of a smokey taste, so I question whether they were fully cooked on a smoker. To make matters worse, it came smothered with a sweet BBQ sauce that was corn syrup based. Much too much sauce. Got about 5 or 6 small bites total. Surprised they would serve something so different from what was described. On the other hand, the bbq salad with pulled chicken was very good. Went here for work lunch. Co-worker ordered the half slab ribs platter and I ordered the burnt ends platter where I subbed the beans with fries with side of blue cheese dressing. Service was quick even though there was only the one bartender and one waiter and maybe a manager on the floor. We beat the lunch crowd so there were not many diners yet. My co-worker said the ribs were good. The burnt ends was a bit chewy to me and a little dry on some. The fries were crispy, like how I like them. The coleslaw was good as well. The barbecue sauce they use is a little on the sweet side...good for those who like their sauces sweet, not good for those who like their sauces more on the tangy side. Would I eat here again, yes. This is a new restaurant to the area and I had high hopes. But since it is new and maybe working out some kinks, I will give it another try and update accordingly. I called for a takeout order. The girl on the phone initially didn't understand me. Said I was calling the wrong place. Odd since I used the auto dial feature off of the internet page. Called again, same girl, now says yes this is Enzos. I requested an order for pickup and she said they don't do that. They only take orders if you are there in person. Well their website specifically states to call restaurant for takeout. When I arrived, the same girl was upfront and took my order. This is a new place so it does make sense that maybe the employees are in a learning curve so I'll give her grace. I got my food home and was excited to try and i liked the first rib. Then after that one, they all tasted like they had been reheated in a microwave. It was tender and the sauce was good, but wasn't impressed with the ribs themselves. As sides I ordered mashed potatoes, corn on the cob and cornbread. Mashed potatoes were good but very small portion for the price. Cornbread was dry and the corn on the cob was mush. The corn on the cob should not have been served. If I had dined in I would have sent it back. And I've sent food back like twice in my life. I had the cheesecake for dessert. It was cheesecake. We stopped by Enzos barbecue today for lunch we had heard from some neighbors that it was open so we stopped by. My husband and I shared a platter of baby back ribs with a side of coleslaw cornbread and we opted to upgrade to onion rings. All of the food was very very good, I personally like a lot of smoky flavor to my meat and a nice crisp outside of the ribs. The onion rings were very good and crispy I would highly recommend those! They do have a killer happy hour menu that we will be coming back to check out in the near future. This is a family run place with another location in Oceanside I'm stoked that there's going to be a good barbecue place with a great happy hour close by us now.
