Shout out to Dulce for helping us grab some tables for our large party of almost 20 people, and to Alejandro for being such a great server! Stopped in last night to celebrate my husband's birthday. Although Del's doesn't take reservations, we were able to snag a few tables right next to the kids play area. It was perfect since we had so many kids in our party. All the food was delicious -- from their baked beans, corn bread, onion rings, and to their barbecue selection. We ordered the 12 party meal plus some appetizers for the kids such as the Mac & cheese and chicken tenders. Everyone was commenting on how good everything was. Honestly, this has become one of our favorite barbecue spots! Their bbq sauce is also really good, it had the right amount of sweetness and slight tang without being too thick. Visiting San Diego and the fam needed lunch after a visit at SDSU. Looked on yelp and this came up as highly rated. When I drove up, I was a little nervous because the location seemed odd with it being primary residential apartments but there were a lot of cars especially for mid day Tuesday so we went with it. It was taco Tuesday so I got three tacos and the house margarita. Chicken breast taco was so good and the crispy cod was even better. Margarita was good, simple traditional flavor and for $6 it was a steal! We also ordered the street corn, burger with fries and Cobb salad. Cobb was one of the best and chicken was very flavorful rather than bland and dry. Service was fast and super friendly! Never had to wait looking for water, food, check. I was craving a pastrami sandwich, and a friend suggested checking out Del's, located where Nicolsi's used to be on Highway 8. It's a great little spot. I was welcomed by a nice selection of local draft beers, which is always a plus. I ordered the Reuben, and it was done very well. The bread was great, and the sauerkraut had good flavor--I just wished there had been a bit more of it, same with the pastrami. Still, the flavor was excellent. For my side, I chose the coleslaw, which was fresh and had a nice crunch. They also offer a solid selection of BBQ meats that I definitely plan to come back and try. We found out about this place in restaurant week. First plus point for them is they have the areas for the kids to play. My kids had a lot of fun. All of the staffs are very nice and friendly. To be honest, I didn't put too much expectation on the food before I came but it was a surprise for us. All of the food are delicious and the portion is big too. For appetizers we got brisket chili and best mac and cheese. It was so good. The classic burger is great. The meat is well seasoned and juicy. I really appreciate how clean this restaurant is for a BBQ place. Too many of them get dirty and sticky but this place is clean and nice. They have their own parking lot which is perfect and it's accessible for people with disabilities. The service was amazing. Kind and knowledgeable staff all around. We got the platter for 2 that included chicken, pulled pork, brisket, corn bread, jalapeno hominy gratin, Mac and cheese, and beans. All about 60 bucks which is well worth it. The pork was by far the best, so juicy and flavorful. We also loved the chicken and brisket even if it was a tad on the dry side. The jalapeno hominy was AMAZING. Totally worth the up charge. What a unique little side dish, definitely something to try. The beans were also great and the Mac and cheese was pretty standard. I was craving comfort food at the end of the year, December 31st, 2025. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but I decided on a barbecue place by the name of Del's Hideout in San Diego, off of Waring Road. It's the perfect place for comfort food, any kind of barbecue you could possibly want. They have everything and anything barbecue. I didn't want to feel really full or sick to my stomach, so I ordered two brisket sliders. I am not much of a meat eater; I usually eat chicken or fish, but I decided to try the brisket sliders. I also ordered a little cup of mac and cheese. Everything was flavorful, tasty, tangy, and very delicious. I had a very friendly waitress, and the decor is relaxed and casual. They play a great selection of pop and country for a pleasant atmosphere. They had their Christmas tree up and TVs throughout the restaurant with sports on, plus a good-sized bar area. We arrived at Del's at about 5:30. It was pretty busy and we were seated at the last four-top table next to the noisy and bright arcade games. This was not the ideal place to enjoy a meal, but we didn't have a choice at that moment. So we perused the menu and made some important meal choices. M. opted for the two meat combo plate with tri-tip and brisket, collard greens, bacon potato salad & corn bread. I ordered the SOB Salad and a side of Mac n' Cheese. Waters w/ lemon to drink. Our waiter was friendly and gave us good service up until our food was delivered, and then he got a few new tables and got a bit swamped. Sadly, although our food came out promptly, it was pretty meh. M. said the tri-tip was mostly fat, the brisket lacked seasoning, and the BBQ sauce was underwhelming and ketchup-forward. He liked the collard greens and the cornbread. I tried the pickles and they were quite sweet and they had a strong and unpleasant aftertaste. I normally love pickles, but these were not it. My salad was huge, and the portion of crispy chicken was generous. I'm honestly not mad about the salad. The mac n' cheese was mild and tasty, but it was lukewarm. I would have enjoyed it more if it was hot. The arcade games got kind of busy while we were eating, and it felt like being in a Dave & Buster's which was not the vibe I was going for. M. nearly got hit in the head by a Dad toting a huge Trader Joe's bag and playing a Ninja Turtles game with his kiddo. So the ambiance of this place is part sports bar - part BBQ resto - and part kid-friendly family funhouse. It's super if that is what you are looking for. After finishing our food, we sat idly for ten minutes, and then a Manager inquired how were were doing. We asked for a to-go cup for the Mac and the check. She asked one of her co-workers to take care of that for us. The co-worker Dulce (sp) came by with the little electronic Toast card reader and said that our bill was $68.34. That didn't seem right to me even with tax, so I asked her to print it out. She came back with a printout and handed it to me. Turns out that the restaurant charges a 5% supplemental fee to "offset rising costs." At the time, I didn't realize (until I researched it while writing this review) that there was a note at the very bottom of the menu that indicated that this charge would be added to checks, but we could opt out if we wanted... so keep in mind that this fee is added, but no one tells you about it. So, long story short, the food is quite expensive for what you get, and the actual taste & quality of the food is hit or miss. I really wanted to like Del's because I'd heard and read good things & we were looking for a great BBQ spot because M. loves it, but unfortunately, today's visit will be our last. read more

Came on a Wednesday as did not realize it was "kids eat free day" so the restaurant was packed with families. My friend and I sat at the bar. They have quick the extensive list of beers and I got a hazy ipa that was delicious. For food I got the pulled pork sandwich and opted for the street corn side. The food was delicious! The pulled pork had such a good flavor and didn't feel super fatty. Bbq sauce wasn't overloaded and the slaw added a nice crunch. The street corn was also surprising in a good way. Del's Hideout is one the many Cohn restaurants that provides great service and delicious food. It's located in a semi-weird spot in between hotels and residential area but pretty easy to find. There's enough on-site parking as well as street parking so that should not be an issue even on busier times. The restaurant has a fun vibe to it, arcades along the wall, a nice decent size bar and a play area for kids. We ordered a variety of things to share and they were all on-point. Del's got a full bar with several beers on tap as well as canned beers. We finished our meal with a Mexican Candy Shot which taste just like the real candy. Yum! read more

Loved this place! It truly is a "hideout." Such an adventure getting to this place . There is lots of parking in both the lot & on the street. We got there right at opening & got some food to go. It was all out in less than ten minutes. The plan was to stay & play but the play area for the kids was under construction at the time. They've got some fun arcade games in there too that helped keep the kids occupied. Our waitress was super sweet & attentive during the time that we were in there. It was a little too cooked for me. The onion rings were bomb so good. I also ordered a side of collard greens, which were also very good not bitter at all. First of all our server Maki was the best! She never left our drinks empty, she checked on us at appropriate times where it wasn't overbearing or where we had to search for her, and SHE is what pushed my rating to 5 otherwise it would've been a 4 because of the food and price. The onion rings were good enough to share with 3-4 people and we absolutely loved the deviled eggs. We got the 4 meat with brisket, tri tip and 2 of the ribs. As for the sides we ordered the cheesy hominy, (texture wise it threw me off and it was too starchy), the tri tip chili was good, would've been great with some sour cream, the street corn and greens were great. We should've just stuck with those instead of upgrading. As for the dessert, I should've went with what Maki suggested, but I like warm desserts with ice cream. We got the bread pudding and she was right, it would be great with a sauce. A great sauce would've been the sauce they put on the blondie at Applebees. As an SDSU grad and 'Aztec For Life' I was more than familiar with the location of Del's Hideout. As I recall, it used to be Nicolosi's back in the day, resplendent with Aztec and San Diego State pennants and memorabilia. Hooboy, has this neighborhood grown up ! I thought perhaps I was lost amid the new apartment buildings and condos, but sure enough, the restaurant showed up right where I remembered it to be. It is less a college hangout now and more a family barbecue restaurant, a few token Aztec reminders here and there, and way more TVs. There are daily specials, and families love the Wednesday Special, Kids Eat Free. Since it was Thursday, I chose the special, a draft beer, fries and a cheeseburger for about $19. The beer was served in an ice cold glass, but the fries were mediocre, not exactly hot and somewhat hard. The star of this show was definitely the cheeseburger, which was outstanding. A fresh bun, pickles, lettuce, cheese and a nice juicy meat patty. Unfortunately the seating is fast food quality, hard seats designed more for turnover than comfort. I came here twice now for Restaurant Week 2 years in a row because this place is BEYOND WORTH the price. I cannot even express how cheap the food is in comparison to other bbq places... not to mention, that this place also has deals monthly or even daily depending on the season/day. The sandwich always comes with a TON of fries. I feel like I always get full with the amount that they offer. The alcohol is always tasty and sweet. I would say that the onion rings are not my favorite, but I can see others who really enjoy it because of the batter. The bbq always hits, is juicy, seasoned well, and saucey! The ambiance is very much casual and can totally see a mixture of college students, sports lovers, bbq lovers, etc. dining at this spot. This place offers 10+ televisions so a sports day is a must here. Not to mention that there is also a kid section for the little ones. The bathrooms are clean but the extra door in the women's big stall always freaks me out for some reason. The parking is not the greatest, and sometimes you do have to parallel park on the street if none are available in the tiny lot that they have. The bbq sauce is SO tasty, so tasty that I even witnessed an elderly man squeeze the whole bottle into his to-go box. I do like how they put a squeeze bottle, role of paper towel, and utensils at each table. The dessert is the best way to end the meal here! Hideout is right!!! Del's Hideout is tucked among other businesses and apartment complexes. Found this place scrolling through our phones for Cohn restaurants. We definitely would have missed it if we were just driving by. Loved being greeted effusively by Alicia the second we stepped inside. It wasn't just us. She greeted everyone that way. She also checked in on us , so she was quickly on hand to order additional Texas Toast for us. We asked what her favorite menu items were and brisket rolled off her tongue like that delicious sweet tea they serve. We wanted this meal to double as a late lunch/early dinner, so we listened carefully to how Alejandro responded to our questions about menu items. Between the two them, Alicia and Alejandro wisely spoke highly of the brisket as their favorite meat item. Every item was cooked or prepared to perfection. No joke. Even the bread and butter pickles they served on the side were delicious. The baby back ribs and brisket plate were awesome. Maggie had - and loved Jeremy's Rueben. Underneath the sports vibe of the decor and TV offerings is this really groovy vibe in the pictures, posters. Even the women's bathroom had great pictures and quotes. Loved seeing families having a meal here. This is clearly a local favorite. We didn't have room to eat dessert on the spot, so we ordered banana pudding to go. I was really excited to try this place out. But if I'm being honest, it's not that great. Food was okay 5/10. Brisket and sausage were on the dry side. And the onion rings had no meat! We love our classic old fashioneds but love variations just as well and Del's had some delicious ones. I got Tim's and she got the Aztec version. Both had great "other" flavors but maintained the tried and true character and flavor of the classic. Because we weren't that hungry we decided to order 1 plate to share of their brisket w/ sides of collared greens and potato salad. The brisket was tender and had very nice flavor and seasoning. The collared greens had decent amount of tanginess and tenderness that I like. The potato salad just fit with the brisket. I really enjoyed the potato salad. I love the BBQ here, but today. Wow, I was very embarrassed, already an old, and ugly gal that I am, and eating alone. So, I also forget my sell phone to entertain myself while waiting, so, yes, awkward, and all my fault. But my waiter made me feel like a tiny, and awkward woman, alone, and having to ask for help FOUR TIMES. I am usually not this kind of person. Ok, I am a recluse. But when I spend this kind of money on myself, I want to be treated nicer than a Small, little spoiled child. He gave me a SIPPY cup to drink my mai tai with, he first sat, me almost in the two men's laps, where I could hear every word, which I promptly moved myself. I think he maybe was trying to show me, how annoyed I was by moving to a larger table. By giving me a SIPPY CUP, LIKE my children had when they were small. I asked for it to be in a grown up glass. I said, no one else is using a child's sippy cup! Check. Anyways, by the time my food came, I asked for my silverware, because it was hiding behind the center items. Well, he promptly pulled that away from me, so I was unable to report, feeling humiliated, and maybe even discriminated against, being an old ugly, gal, and im ok with it. Being from Texas, my wife and I are very picky when it comes to barbecue. We've tried a lot of BBQ spots in California, and most just don't get it right. But Del's Hideout really surprised us in the best way. The vibe is more modern than traditional southern spots, but it still feels like a true "hideout." It's relaxed, clean, and inviting. We sat outside, which worked out perfectly because they have a kids' play area right next to the patio. As parents with a toddler, that little touch made a huge difference. It let us actually enjoy our food without the usual chaos. We shared a barbecue platter and everything was genuinely delicious. The meat was cooked right, flavorful, and juicy. The sides held up just as well. You can tell they care about the food here, which is rare for a lot of places trying to serve barbecue outside of the south. The staff was great too. The woman who helped us was super nice, very attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Overall, Del's Hideout delivered across the board.
