This is a beautiful golf course! HUGE plot of land. Like the largest piece of 18 hole property I have ever seen. You could fit 3 full size golf courses out there. If you play from the back tees be ready for a challenge. Even straight drives 280yds or so will still leave some long approach shots. Be mindful of the course layout and study any good phone application's map--the carts don't have GPS. Do this especially on tee shots. Placement is paramount everywhere as the architect has designed many blind tee shots. It's not a tight golf course by any means just a LONG course that requires some quick on the fly shot planning. Get a good golf GPS app on your phone and stay focused for the entire hole. Trust me here. It will save you several strokes. Nice staff, beautiful clubhouse, beautiful holes. You won't see another hole from the one you are on. You could scream at the top of your lungs on each hole and nobody would hear you out there. It's that huge of a place. Also, nobody from the pro shot can see you from any vantage point. Makes for a very private and tranquil experience. Lots of beautiful nature and wildlife out here. One of the best, most well kept and reasonably priced golf courses in Lake County. Why can't Cook County get on board with what they're doing in our sister county? Tee boxes for every level of golfer. Play up in the tee boxes to your abilities to score better and have more fun because this course can reach out and slap you. The further back you go the more difficult you'll find the course to play and more time will be spent looking for lost golf balls which happened to our group yesterday. We waited on every hole and nearly every shot on the back nine last time I played there due to two groups in front of us playing incredibly slow forcing us into a nearly five hour round. read more

A brilliant course, especially for a public course. This means anyone and I mean anyone can play this course. Greens fees are pretty reasonable at about $40. Holes # 9 and 16 are great holes. The rest of the course offers nice fairways with slick greens. I really love that it is part of forest preserve and is under the "Audubon Society" so it is protected. Rated as one of the better public courses in America and deservedly so. read more

I agree with what others have said, this is a great course, as good as it gets for a municipal course. Very challenging layout, long enough to require a good game, doesn't justy bash you over the head with endless 440 yard 4 pars. You are required to think your way around the course to play well as per most RTJ courses. It was in immaculate shape when I was there, although I don't know what it is about most golfers in Lake County, but almost NOBODY replaces their divots on the fairways or fixes their ball-marks on the greens. Despite this, it still looked and played great. Good pace of play on a Sunday when I was there. Very walkable, although I didn't like that they made me pay for the cart anyway. I still chose to walk for the exercise, but I didn't see anyone else doing so.... read more

Course was in beautiful condition last week for a corporate outing. I was surprised at the size of the clubhouse and patio for a county course. Greens in great shape. Not too fast or slow. Holes varied. Love the fescue and the forced carries on a few holes. Driving range is nice. Chipping green is just adequate but at least they have one. Not sure you can walk this with the elevation changes. Can't wait to get back. read more

Played it again this summer and it was in great shape again. Because of the time of year, they did start aerating and top dressing the greens so it was a little slow. But again, great value and a great layout. read more

Dang. Really couldn't get the ball movin like I wanted to out here. My obliques were pretty tight and my back swing was like, way abbreviated. So I kept coming in with too much hip turn torque and not enough of an elongated backswing. Also had some tightness in my wrists, couldn't get em turned over enough. Left a ton of putts on this course, seemed to play pretty fast. Are you kidding me??? 7 three-putts?! This golf course is too tough...it shouldn't take 159 strokes to complete. Had a lot on my mind the throughout the round.../maybe it was my marriage. She just doesn't listen, wants to know what's wrong but when I tell her, she is just looking at TMZ on her stupid internet phone. She'll figure it out one day. One day, she will wake up, and I'll be gone... Bermuda prolly. How the hell can someone play golf while their marriage is falling apart? At the end of the day, I've got money. I have a couple kids in honors classes at a prestigious private school.. I've got a small/medium sized yacht, and I have a C-level position at a Fortune 500 company. I'm rich. Upper six figs. Deffly not struggin. I make more money than 99% of human beings. This is the way I live. Little boy still pushing big wheels. I stack my money, lay low, and chill. Don't need to work hard this the way I feel. I feel, this is the way I live. But golly I sure do love golf. And THUNDERHAWK is a solid course. read more

Played this course yesterday. It was in fantastic condition. I'm a bogey golfer and it is a challenging but satisfying course. Beautifully maintained, gorgeous scenery, everything you would expect from an Audobon certificated, RTJ designed course. Definitely worth a visit. Pro shop staff and marshalls so pleasant. read more

This course is great! It is definitely in the top 3 of all courses I have played, which is not a small amount of courses by any means. I loved every part of the course, and I didn't have a problem with any of the holes. Holes 16, 17 and 18 are a great way to end a round (especially 16). The course was in great shape. The only problem was the greens because they had just been aerated. Because of that, they seemed to be slower than expected. The price to play this course seems very reasonable for how good it is. Even though I played terribly, I will be back a few more times this summer and will be looking forward to seeing how the greens will play when they are in better shape. read more

Love playing here. I've only played here twice with my latest being in 8/2015. The fairways, teeboxes, greens are absolutely pristine. For the money it hands down beats a lot of courses in the Northern IL area. It's worth the extra drive if you are a serious golfer. I also like that they don't jam in groups so there is none of the drama of slow play like other courses where they try to maximize revenue. It's truly a gem. read more

I have played a good number of public courses within 90 minutes of Chicago, and after playing Thunderhawk yesterday I have a new favorite. As Steven mentions below, the strength of this course is the variety of holes. Winds were at a sustained 20+ mph yesterday in what seemed to be the prevailing direction based on the bend of the trees. This made the first two holes play longer, and the third and fourth into a crosswind, but the payoff was the short par 5 7th and short par 4 8th. Both presented great birdie opportunities. The par 5 16th also stood out as a great hole, and every par 3 on the course was interesting. A couple of holes had great greens that were extremely deep (I think 48 yards in one case) with multiple tiers. Overall, it is just a fun course. I can't wait to go back. read more

I'm rating this course 4 1/2 stars which I consider to be one of the best public courses in Chicagoland area in terms of toughness and conditioning. There is a par 5 in the back 9 that is stunning. I felt like I knew what pros face at a major with this hole. I pay only $45 on weekdays and $36 in Autumn. The greens are not too fast but break hard. It would be nice if they have a GPS system although distance markers are easy to find. read more

This review is regarding weddings at this venue. Oh my gosh, where to start. Jody is THE best! She is so organized and always keeps on top of things for you. There were check in email to make sure we were on the same page, which made me feel comfortable through out the planning process. Chef Ann is awesome as well! My guests all said the food was phenomenal!! And the venue is just beautiful, outdoor and indoor are perfect places to have your special day. Cannot recommend enough! read more

For the money, about $65, Thunderhawk is about as good as it gets. But, with many long carries over marshes and very high grass and other natural areas along the fairways any misfit can turn into a lost ball. It is not a course for high handicappers. But for low to mid handicappers it is wonderful. Every hole is distinct though some are quirky but fun. There isn't a single hole on the course that doesn't force you to think. For a county course it is in excellent shape. Greens are pretty smooth and reasonably fast. Fairways are in excellent shape. Only issue are the chewed up par three tee boxes. Why they don't have equipment for the golfers to repair divots amazes me! Rounds take a good 4.5 hours and I'm sure more on busy days. We played the front in two hours but got bogged down on the back nine and all of our scores ballooned from all the waiting. But, it is an outstanding track and well worth the drive up close to the Wisconsin border. If Thunderhawk were private and closer to where I live I'd join it in a minute. read more

Just played a Labor Day Sunday afternoon round. Still one of the best public golf courses in Illinois! 3hrs and 15min on a Sunday = UNBELIEVABLE! Greens were smooth and stimping around 9. Well worth the trip! read more

One could argue this is the best public course in Illinois. If you throw in "for the money" it's almost a guaranteed lock. If you haven't played here do yourself a favor and book a tee time. Good beer selection in the clubhouse to boot. read more

We had a great experience at the beginning. The starter was very informative about the course and which holes were challenging and why. We enjoyed the golf course and hearing the rooster! Things changed when we got back to the pro shop and restaurant. The pro shop smelled like cigars due to the employee that was supposed to be working the pro shop was standing holding the front door open smoking a cigar. The Illinois law states that the minimum distance to smoke at any public building is 15'. We then proceeded to the bar to have a drink. The bar tender made us the wrong drinks. When we told her she commented that she didn't know there was a difference between club soda and tonic water. We told her she needed to pour both in a glass and try them. She would know the difference. Our experience of the course was great. Our experience of the pro shop and bar area was poor. If you want to buy a shirt, skirt or any of the clothes in the pro shop please smell them first. read more

Golf may be great, but if you are looking to host a tournament there, watch out. I put in 3 phone calls over 7 days to try and just set up our tournament and no return phone call. We were ready to spend money and no phone call. I even spoke to the head pro who put me in the voice mail of the person who handles events. No phone call. Very disappointing. read more

This course has been a favorite of me and my mates for the past few years. Obviously the forest preserve has figured that out and raised their green fees. I really hope that the increase goes into maintenance and not into the State budget deficit. I think that we will give it a chance again soon to see if it remains a go-to course. read more

The new 2015 early bird rate now requires a 4some. So disappointed. This is a fantastic course but the new policy isn't going to help business in the early morning. Hopefully they realize this and go back to the way it has been. read more
