    Steak and kidney pie.
    Petra E.

Most fun pies I've found since moving to the area. This place is sort of a combination corner store/pie shop/butcher shop and the small, personal size, pies are the highlight. They have a large variety, hot and cold, and we got two warm case pies (Quebec style tourtiere and chicken) two warm case Scotch eggs, and two cold case items for later (steak and kidney pie and shepherd's pie). We loved all of these. The Scotch eggs were cooked just right and balanced the sausage coating and egg perfectly. Our favorite pies were the chicken and steak and kidney, but we loved them all. It was kind of funny when the owner (?) checked to make sure I knew they weren't kidney beans in the pie - haha! I guess be aware if you don't already know. Staff/owner very helpful and friendly and even made sure I had the "key" to tell which pies are which from the markings (see image). The gorton we got from their sides cooler and had with breakfast. Excellent and the other sides, including mashed potatoes, all looked good. We like a bit of green with our meals so added broccoli one day and salad the next to balance out the pie. All around great options here. Parking was easier than I imagined from the maps. What seems like quite sufficient parking out front. Final note - be aware these are individual hand pie style - tender and flavorful but designed not to make a mess so if you are looking for a ton of gravy in the pie these are maybe not your style or at least you may want to add gravy. They do sell large pies as well.

After reading reviews about this market and their meat pie's I had to take a little drive out here. It's located on the corner of a pretty busy street. There's a decent amount of parking with signs so it's very helpful. Inside the market they sell all types of things including meats you'd buy at a butcher shop and of course the pies. So they have warmed pies and ones that you need to bake to warm up when you get home. your choice. I decided to try the teriyaki pie, Shepard's pie, then asked them what's the most popular. They told me chicken and pork are the most popular pies, so I tried those two as well. All the pies were make really well and baked to perfection. My only gripe was the fillings were toooooo salty. I don't know if I have to get use to it but to me I had a hard time eating them. I even tried squeezing some lemon on top to counter act the saltiness but it didn't work. I'm going to give them another try and just hope and pray they accidentally put too much salt. The pricing though was very reasonable for the pies.

Friendly service and a long history. Those are the positives. I tried a pork pie and was very underwhelmed. Small, (size of a hockey puck), dry, flavorless, and value for money just isn't there.

Did you ever try KOA Pies on A st. In Southie. They we're billed as Australian meat pies but we're really derived from the English Pork Pie. They had an array of different meat filled buttery pastry shelled hand held warm savory pillows of goodness. My favorite was the Irish Beef Stew Pie. Sadly, they closed as well as the one in Eastie. I was lost. Now I'm found. It was an hour ride but I'd do it again. Thwaite's in Methuen. They were sold out of a bunch I wanted to try. I went too late in the day. They did have their signature Pork Pie. I grabbed a couple others, hamburger and onion, chicken pot pie, etc.... the pork pie was in my hand before I got back in the car. Dense perfectly cooked pie crust encased a juicy ( not too much ) spicy ( again, not too much ), ground seasoned pork. It needed nothing. No salt nor pepper nor sauce. Worth the trip. The world is right again.

As a neighborhood market, it's cute! As a handmade handheld pie place?... oh my god these things are good.

But I decided that I can give my opinion of the management of Mr. Steer. They are the rudest, most unhelpul people that you can imagine. Not every employee but I am specifically talking about the owner/manager, his son behind the meat counter, occasionally the check-out clerk and even sometimes the deli counter person. I live within a mile of the store and have been here many times. I'll admit that they do have great meat and prepared foods. But it's not worth the abuse that you get from the above named employees, I went there a couple of Sundays ago and went into the store at 3:50, ten minutes before closing, to just pick up some steak tips for grilling. I immediately got some hated looks. They had already taken all of the meat out of the meat cases and the manager was replacing the butcher paper that lines the bottom of the case. I wanted to see what they had but all they could say was "What do you want?" I said that I wanted to see the tips they had, and all he said was "Well, what do you want"? I walked out never to return. I don't know how they stay in business when they treat their customers like that!

I used a couple of small pieces of hickory on the coals for a bit of smoke. These may have been the nicest steaks I've ever grilled. Tender, juicy, beefy, a nice bone to gnaw on. Couldn't have been better. I'm going to go to these guys for a Christmas rib roast. salt, pepper, a little garlic, some dry mustard and a long slooooooowwwwww cooking time. mmmmmmm.....meat!

Made a visit to the Tewksbury location (due to the great Stoneham location no longer in business)…read more Business location is hard to find as it's located on the backside of a row of storefronts. Walked in on a Thursday afternoon and was the only customer there. Looked for their famous Caribelo wings but there was only one package left. Bummer. All the other wing styles had plenty. Got tips and potatoes. Why three stars? We know the Caribelo wings are the most popular yet they either didn't stock correctly or someone bought extreme amounts of these. Secondly, the employees don't really seemed to be enthusiastic about being there. No can I help you, no interaction. Maybe it's the location ? Kind of out of the way. My advice, move to the rt 38 side or maybe closer to the brewery. Your beer drinkers are bbq guys.... As a frequent visitor of the Stoneham store, that location had a lot of foot traffic, visibility and across from a liquor store so one stop shopping once you park. Also the employees there were always helpful, motivated and knowledgeable . I'm hopeful that they stick around as their meats are flavorful and tasty.
