I grew up in the Greater Lawrence Area, Thwaites always was and still is a great place to shop. Their pork pies and their tomato sausage pies are the best! (The other varieties are notable too!) The butcher shop has the freshest and best cuts of meat. All around a winner. As for ambiance, Thwaites is like a warm hug. It's a "Mom and Pop" store in the best sense. Blatantly overcharged me for 2 pies and a Powerade. Then charged my coworker who ordered the same thing a completely different price than I paid. And once I actually ate the pies the chicken was good but the pork was honestly scary. Wouldn't come back. read more

Most fun pies I've found since moving to the area. This place is sort of a combination corner store/pie shop/butcher shop and the small, personal size, pies are the highlight. They have a large variety, hot and cold, and we got two warm case pies (Quebec style tourtiere and chicken) two warm case Scotch eggs, and two cold case items for later (steak and kidney pie and shepherd's pie). We loved all of these. The Scotch eggs were cooked just right and balanced the sausage coating and egg perfectly. Our favorite pies were the chicken and steak and kidney, but we loved them all. It was kind of funny when the owner (?) checked to make sure I knew they weren't kidney beans in the pie - haha! I guess be aware if you don't already know. Staff/owner very helpful and friendly and even made sure I had the "key" to tell which pies are which from the markings (see image). The gorton we got from their sides cooler and had with breakfast. Excellent and the other sides, including mashed potatoes, all looked good. We like a bit of green with our meals so added broccoli one day and salad the next to balance out the pie. All around great options here. Parking was easier than I imagined from the maps. What seems like quite sufficient parking out front. Final note - be aware these are individual hand pie style - tender and flavorful but designed not to make a mess so if you are looking for a ton of gravy in the pie these are maybe not your style or at least you may want to add gravy. After reading reviews about this market and their meat pie's I had to take a little drive out here. It's located on the corner of a pretty busy street. There's a decent amount of parking with signs so it's very helpful. Inside the market they sell all types of things including meats you'd buy at a butcher shop and of course the pies. So they have warmed pies and ones that you need to bake to warm up when you get home. your choice. I decided to try the teriyaki pie, Shepard's pie, then asked them what's the most popular. They told me chicken and pork are the most popular pies, so I tried those two as well. All the pies were make really well and baked to perfection. My only gripe was the fillings were toooooo salty. I don't know if I have to get use to it but to me I had a hard time eating them. I even tried squeezing some lemon on top to counter act the saltiness but it didn't work. I'm going to give them another try and just hope and pray they accidentally put too much salt. The pricing though was very reasonable for the pies. read more

Did you ever try KOA Pies on A st. In Southie. They we're billed as Australian meat pies but we're really derived from the English Pork Pie. They had an array of different meat filled buttery pastry shelled hand held warm savory pillows of goodness. My favorite was the Irish Beef Stew Pie. Sadly, they closed as well as the one in Eastie. I was lost. Now I'm found. It was an hour ride but I'd do it again. Thwaite's in Methuen. They were sold out of a bunch I wanted to try. I went too late in the day. They did have their signature Pork Pie. I grabbed a couple others, hamburger and onion, chicken pot pie, etc.... the pork pie was in my hand before I got back in the car. Dense perfectly cooked pie crust encased a juicy ( not too much ) spicy ( again, not too much ), ground seasoned pork. It needed nothing. No salt nor pepper nor sauce. Worth the trip. Resupplied. I have a 2 hour drive to this WONDERFUL shop so need to make it worth while. The weather was perfect, traffic, as expected. I called ahead a week earlier to place my order of Cumberland Sausages and to make sure, also ordered some English bangers, 15 lbs of each and 1 lb of each not frozen so I would have some for easy cooking. Had a cooler with me which carried all inside. While picking up my order of course added some pork pies, the best i have found out side of Yorkshire in the UK. These for me are the highlight and do have to make sure of them so have a couple in the car park before driving back. Thank you Thwaites for having THE BEST place around. Truthfully, it's been a long time since I've visited thwaits only because of time. But today, I said enough. I'm going. So I was there about 9:30 with a list of pie flavors we wanted and a large chicken pie. Well, I got my chicken pie, but they only had 3-4 flavors of the mini pies none of which were on my list. That was very disappointing. I did substitute with what they had and, of course, they were absolutely fantastic. But expecting all the other flavors and not having them was a low. That's the only reason for the minus 1 star. I can remember going 3-4 times a month, and finding a full case of mini pies ready to roll. read more

I'm probably not the right person to review this place, being from England that have some of the best pork butchers in the world i'm a hard customer to please. If you grew up with this then its going to have great memories for you as some of the local butchers in England do for me, but i'm glad i got to try it. I found the pork pies to be lacking flavor and under seasoned, the pastry was also a disappointment a little to light, pork pie pastry should sit like a lead weight in your stomach!. My wife got the chicken and broccoli pie and that was really tasty, much better than the pork pie as the lighter crust made the filling pop. I ordered some sausage to try at home, the breakfast sausage was pretty tasty, not over seasoned which is usually the case that i have found, and overall were very good. I also got the tomato sausage, utterly disappointed, the sausage tuned mealy when i cooked it and was incredibly fatty, the skins were inedible, maybe i over cooked them. I'm glad i went to try it after seeing it advertised so much, but if i want traditional pork pies and sausage from home i'll order online from Parkers British shop. read more

Can I just say that I used to get chicken pot pies from Thwaites on the regular when I lived in methuen. I've been in California for 4 years now and miss it every day. Well I got the ridiculous idea to ask if they could overnight me a dozen pies and Abby from Thwaites was more than helpful with this dorky endeavor. After chatting back and forth I finally placed an order and one day later it was on my porch waiting for me. If you're local to methuen you can just go get them, no need to overnight ship it. Beautiful old school butcher shop that has wonderful made in house meat pies. The pies are more English than French,but there is some nice French Canadian items here. (Gordon (creton), baked beans, etc) I like the pork pie, chicken pie, and broccoli & cheese. Pies are available warm or frozen. Pro: Made in house sausages. They have it fresh or frozen ($1.00 off) which is great. They also have some typical groceries and sundries. Fantastic customer service. Very friendly and helpful. Stumbled in for my first time recently and discovered a wide selection of savory hand pies warm and ready to eat. I took home a variety to share with the family, nine pies total. I don't remember every type I tried but there was chicken broccoli, tomato, sausage, chicken parm, and (my favorite) pork. They had crazy flavors like General Gao's and mac n cheese. I had heard of Thwaites from a friend who highly recommended their sausages but a friend and I came instead for their meat pies. I had heard about their meat pies on a food podcast and then from my hairdresser. A friend and I were in the neighborhood so we decided to venture in to see what these meat pies were all about. Upon driving up, the store is nestled in a residential neighborhood and thank goodness for GPS! As you enter, you immediately see the meat case toward the rear of the store and to the right of that, a deli case that has pre-made ready to heat larger pies and on this day, the top refrigerated shelf looked a little bare ... only with a few meat pies to the right. On top of this refrigerated case is another heated display case that holds the hot meat pies. That case also looked 95% empty ... only with a few items on the top shelf. A younger gentleman caught my eye and asked if we needed help. We told him it was our first time there and we were interested in their meat pies so we asked "how does this work"? He began to explain the hot vs. cold meat pies and then said a fresh batch of chicken and pork pies were being made. They were essentially ready and he could go out back to get us some. He asked how many we wanted and as he went back and came out, he announced there were 3 more specialty pies that were also ready: Kielbasa, Chicken and Broccoli and Italian ... to which I said, I'll take one of each of those too! It didn't take him long to box up my pies: 2 chicken, 2 pork, 1 each f the three specialty ones. My friend also ended up getting 4 pies: 1 pork, 1 chicken, 1 chicken and broccoli and 1 of the cold kung pao chicken pies. We had already had a light lunch but the smell of the hot pies were killing us so we had to split one (the chicken and broccoli) in the car. The inside of the pie was SO hot that we had to be very careful biting into it. The crust was fantastic, crunchy on the outside and flaky on top and inside. There was ample filling in the pie; however, with a few bites I detected a fishy taste and no sooner did I taste it my friend said "i just took a bite that tasted like tuna". Good thing we both like tuna but that was a little strange. I'm giving this market 5 stars because of the exceptional service we received from the gentleman who retrieved and boxed our pies. It was very busy there but he could not have been more patient explaining the pies, he also gave us a cheat sheet/legend that explains the markings on the top crusts of each pie that indicates what kind of pie you have. He also went back and forth to the back several times to retrieve the pies - always returning with a smile and a "what else can I do for you?" Our first pie was good and I'm looking forward to diving into the other 6 I brought home. We love supporting hard-working, small, local shops! read more
