All their cuts are so good, nothing needs long braising to be tender. The Filet Mignon and Kansas or Club steaks are better than some U.S. Prime in California, and their beef tenderloin and prime rib roasts are without compare. Their turkeys are the best not needing any brining imho. The store itself has first vegetables, cheeses, prepared marinated meats and steak tips in many marinades and I've tried them all! I've been a loyal customer at Butcher Boy for about a year now. This past weekend a friend of mine went in and bought me some "NY" Strip steaks and was charged $12.99 a lb, but what was received was "Beef Top Round" London Broil steak. When she returned with the steaks and removed the wrapping I informed her that the steak she purchased were not "NY" Strip Steaks. She then told me there was a sign in front of the beef displayed stating that the steaks purchased were "NY" Strip Steaks, and NOT "Beef Top Round" London Broil. This isn't the 1st time this has happened. 3 months ago she went to Butcher Boy and purchased 4 what were supposed to be "NY" Strip Steaks and they gave her "Beef Top Round" London Broil as well. It was for a friend of mine and immediately she was able to point out that the steaks were NOT "NY" Strip Steaks. We live in the Boston area so we didn't think about driving all the way back to North Andover just to return the items so we just kept them. Overall the quality off their meat is great but this kind of trickery is NOT good for business. I hope someone in the company can quickly correct this error because paying for an item at a premium price and getting lower quality cut for a steak is "unacceptable"! I've attached some photos below to show the difference between steaks, even though my frozen "beef top round" is marked NY strip, it's NOT a NY strip. Let me know what you guys think. I got some wings "bell & evans" cryovac and a bone-in ribeye on the 2.5# side I left pics .. they also cryovac that for me as well so I could sous vide .. they also had some beautiful bouquet arrangements my daughter had to get my wife. Butcher Boy is 'The BEST' !! I sent a gift certificate to a friend in North Andover and she said that they are the premier market for fresh meats and prepared dishes. They are only 3-4 minutes from her home in North Andover. She bought her entire Thanksgiving meal there for two and it was better than she could have cooked! The staff answering the phone is so nice and helpful. There is a plethora of mains and sides to choose from and prices are reasonable. The good: A decent (but a little small) selection of specialty food items, cured meats, cheeses, prepared foods, beer, wine, and spirits, and deli meats. The bad: Very pricey even for average/common goods which means EVERYTHING is marked way up. You can't get out of there without producing an unexpected deep dent in the wallet. Worse than Whole Paycheck. The meats are just okay. I grew up on a grass fed cattle ranch and so I'm not completely unfamiliar with a good cut of beef. Sure they have some nice thick cuts if you don't mind the second mortgage, but their beef quality is just average for what you pay and looks almost entirely grain fed. All of which would be tolerable if the staff could just bring themselves to smile once and awhile and make you feel welcome on occasion. Instead, practically everyone who works there wears a permanent scowl and gives every impression of being in a forced labor camp. It's literally as if they train their staff NOT to be too friendly or welcoming because it's virtually universal. Some other reviewer put this way: "They act as if you are lucky to be allowed to shop there.....like they are passengers in the first class section and you've come from coach to use their restroom." Today I went into BUTCHER BOY like I do EVERY WEEKEND- I bought some meat for my family as I am the chef for 6 of us. I planned on an amazing dinner for the family. First, however, I noticed that their prices have risen considerably. Now this may be due to a meat shortage BUT THE DIFFERENCE WAS STAGGERING I was told by an employee "Oh well, that's what's happening in our country" a sweet cashier later told me that it was indeed because of the meat plants being in crisis. I digress. As I left the building, much to my dismay, I realized that my car battery had died! In a panic, and leaving my jumper cables in my other car, I asked a very sweet employee outside if he had jumper cables. He did not, but assured me that if I walked with him into the management office, they would do everything in their power to help a stranded customer...... Well, that turned out to be naïveté at its absolute finest. Upon being escorted into the managers office i was thrilled to see the same two women who seem to always be there, sitting, delegating and directing yet seemingly not doing anything else. I told them my problem with heart and asked if someone, anyone in the establishment might be able to help a fellow human being in turmoil. But apparently, it was too much of an imposition to ask for someone in company "LEADERSHIP" to get out of a comfortable "SITTING POSITION" and make any sort of effort AT ALL, to help a not only paying customer, but one who has brought this business a prolific patronage! To my surprise, this woman who was perfectly happy to not lift even a pinky finger, insisted that I call AAA. She continued "This happens a couple times a week and they might say it takes a while but they arrive in about 20 minutes" Any one of the employees could have assisted me for five minutes and the problem would have been solved. Furthermore, when called, AAA INSISTED help would not arrive for over an hour to an hour and a half! As the business manager of not one BUT THREE overwhelmingly successful DOCTORS OFFICES I am mortified to be even writing this review, nevermind having to go through such a heartless, callous, horrible customer service situation! From here on out, every single one of the epic advisements that I have given to peers and family to convert over to Butcher Boy for their quality and service will now be an overwhelming "NO, DO NOT GO THERE.." followed by this story of CUSTOMER SERVICE HELL. read more

The good: Super tasty cuts of meat, some tasty charcuterie specialties, a small selection of wine, and lots of bakery items, including the most exceptional whoopie pies, in my opinion. The bad: This place is SO SMALL. Perhaps because of this, it seems like there is always an employee in every aisle restocking something and you just feel like you are in the way, or they are in the way, or maybe both. The prices are hefty, even for non-specialty items. The cheese selection is small and not very diverse. The clientele will not tolerate you standing in an aisle for any longer than necessary while shopping. I know some people have complained about the employees but I personally felt like they were fine and helpful enough; it was more the other shoppers who made it intolerable. I'm nitpicking here, but I really hate going someplace that is supposed to be FUN to shop at, picking out specialty cheeses and snacks at leisure, and feeling like I have to rush to make my purchase and get out. read more

Plenty of choices. plenty of helping hands to tell you how to cook, suggestions abound, the pace can be furious, sometimes you just grab what you need and go, other times you can have time to poke around, space is limited, but once you know what you want you can get someone to help out. I'm very disappointed in Butcher Boy. Specifically the bakery dept. a friend of mine went there before Christmas, and purchased a Konditameister cake. She noticed that the fruit on top was a little dry but she purchased the cake because she needed it for a get together. Upon opening the cake she proceeded to cut the cake into individual slices. As each person tried the cake and some of them taking a bite and spitting it out, they put the slices back well my friend herself tried a piece and said it tasted. Awful. So she took the cake back and told them of the problem. The bakery manager instructed her to take it to" Pam" ( one. Of the owners) she just shouted out to the cash register to give her $45.00 and that was it! No apology, No I'm so sorry please take another cake. Not anything! I realize this is a busy time of year for them but customer service means everything to this sort of business. "Pam" should be ashamed of herself! She lost at least 2 customers that day! read more

I visit butcher boy 3/4 times per week and live near by. The food and service is excellent and we are blessed to have such a great market near by. I am writing bc of my last experience purchasing my easter ham. This was a bone in ham which was not cheap. i consulted with the butcher who explained the cooking process and gave instructions which was followed exact. The ham looked awesome coming out of the oven amd looked great. When we went to eat it, it, you couldn't. This was so salty you Couldn't eat one bite. this was a butcher boy label packed in a clear bag. absolutely disappointing and sort of embarrassing. Two butchers in cornered, white paper hats and crisp white aprons, happily grabbed the right meats from the display case and slapped them down on top of the glass counter to make their pts. So I can cut away the ends on most any meat, but it's best if I start with a long filet. I got the inside scoop that tougher cuts can also be used on those occassions when unpopular relatives come for dinner. Just marinate the beef pieces a few hours or more so the meat tenderizes in the juice before cooking. First the good news. I drove an hour and a half round trip to place my order for a 'prime rib' roast directly with one of the butchers. On Dec. 23rd I did the same hour and a half round trip to pick up my 'prime rib'. The staff were very helpful and cautious as I picked up my order. Now the less good news. The roast looked good when I took it out of the store packaging and I cooked it for Christmas dinner. However, my family including my self felt that the quality of the roast was sub-par. After spending $150 for a 9 pound roast we expected something special. It was special in the wrong direction. Note that on the Butcher Boy's web site that they describe the 'prime rib' as Angus Beef. That really doesn't tell you the actual grade of the meat. I expected as least a Choice grade but can't imagine that's what I got. If I decide to an expensive roast next year, I'll shop someplace else. read more

I grew up with Butcher Boy, and as a fussy eater- especially when it came to meat- this place was one of the only that I would eat steak, pork, etc. from. Lately, though, their meat has been sub par. On three separate occasions, stuffed chicken, stuffed pork chops, and bourbon steak tips have been tough, and in the case of the first two, completely tasteless. Additionally, the one item from the bakery that has been even mildly enjoyable are the lemon poppy cupcakes. Other than that, it seems that Butcher Boy is attempting a cheap, grotesque knock-off of the Tripoli pastries and desserts that they used to carry. I've never seen such a vast selection of fresh quality meat. Prices are a bit high, but it really is the best. They also have lots of import beers that are hard to find in many places. When I go here it's usually because I can't find the same thing elsewhere, like ghost pepper hot sauce for example, or English and Belgian import ales / lagers. Those prices on beer actually tend to be pretty reasonable. It had a lot of fat on it and was very hard to cut because it had not been presliced the way most spirals are, so we had to spend additional time hacking off mini slices. I've been here a few times. The ingredients are quality but the price is high. Based on food alone I would give 5 stars. But based on the attitude of the people who shop here (think whole foods) and the attitude of some of the staff I'm not impressed. I was hoping to find a good Italian deli since I'm pretty picky because I worked in an high scale Italian deli for 5 years. When I went to the deli I asked for thin cut salami he showed me a semi thin slice (from a pile of precut salami) when I said no he looked visibly irritated and said maybe. At the end I asked for a 1/4 lb of provolone and said I had to get a 1/2 lb of precut cheese. I was not impressed. I would think that if I'm paying such high prices I would get everything fresh cut. There is also to ticket system and someone who had just arrived was helped before I was. I gave three stars because I do think the quality of meat they have in the butcher area is of the highest quality and the staff in that portion of the store are very pleasant. My 3 favorite syllables? Besides "I love boobs"? Porterhouse. (I see you countin' out the syllables on your fingers...) I am serial here folks...Butcher Boy has the best cuts of meat...picked up a nice 1.5" thick cut the other night and grilled it up on ye ol' Weber Q. High Heat...2 min pointing the steak at 10 o'clock...2 min on the other side pointing at 2 o'clock...then 2 more minutes on each side and you have a killer medium-rare steak. Now, DON'T you go cuttin into that meat to see if it's done...trust me. And let the thing rest for 5 minutes once you pull it off the grill...trust me again. Some peeps prefer medium heat, 8 mins on each side...to each their own, but they will concur... Don't cut that cow. Leave it be. Top that off with a little seasoning of your choice...I favor just some kosher salt and fresh ground pepper...with some mushrooms that have been sauteed with butter and a lil' garlic salt...then maybe about a dozen grilled asparagus, (see footnote), that took a bath in some olive oil and more SnP...turning the veggies throughout a 3-4 minute period depending on their thickness. A little char on 'em is NOT a bad thing. Holy Buh-jeepers... Now THAT is a meal... Footnote: Your pee is gonna smell a lil' later...
