Soooo good! Very similar to the Chinese taste in China now. If only they accept credit card. That's the only drawback.

Those adventurous dishes are what make this gem so amazing. Trust me when I say your taste buds will thank you for taking the path less traveled. If you check out the included photo you'll see a wide assortment of flavors on display, from spicy dumplings swimming in delicious hot oil to aromatic spicy crab, which was a surprise hit. Yes, there are spicy dishes a plenty at this place, but you'll also find plates suitable for milder tongues as well. The entire menu is packed with delicious food which will satisfy just about anyone in your group. Indoor dining isn't happening these days, but during my previous visits to Jin Jiang I always found the service to be friendly and attentive while the atmosphere was quite comfortable. Seriously, this is the kind of rare find (outside of your local Chinatown) that I want to support through these tough times because I love restaurants that work hard to expand the Chinese cuisine experience beyond the same boring stuff that has sadly become synonymous with takeaway. Give them a try if you're looking for something different. They just might become your new favorite Chinese.

Barshu has been serving what I can only imagine is authentic Sichuan fodder, (for surely you couldn't make this stuff up) for a good 20 years. It sits a stone's throw from Chinatown, north of Shaftesbury and it's worth the short detour from the mainly Cantonese Gerrard St and its environs. Intimate and intricate, the space and the wooden carvings that adorn it. It gives a sense that the proprietors want to give you a flavour of their beloved Sichuan culture as well as their food. And they don't hold back. There's no catering for those of a nervous culinary disposition here. The menu is unfathomably and reassuringly long. If you will make use of every part of your animal, that's will happen. Pig's feet stand next to Pig's ears who listen intently to intestines as they growl that nobody is being brave enough to eat them. Sichuan pepper and chilli feature heavily in many dishes. Two things I can confirm. The pork is most definitely in chilli. And the Dandan noodles are most definitely, as described, legendary. I spent the weekend trying and failing to create the same unctuous loveliness that arrived in a bowl in front of me. A more comforting, yet powerful concoction it would be hard to produce and for under a tenner, an absolute bargain. The noodles are fresh, soft, chewy. We could be in italy were the noodles not smothered in a minced pork and sesame paste concoction that adds to the velvetiness. Smoother than the cream in a Twinkie, word up. the Pork in Chilli came on a plate they snaffled from Wimbledon ladies champ Iga Swiatek once she'd finished brandishing it in celebration. In amongst a million dried chillies which have been fried with Sichuan pepper, you'll find hard nuggets of pork. They have been incinerated and infused with the flavours of the chillies and pepper that engulfs them. To eat a nugget is to be met with an initial pleasant fragrantness followed by a mouth who's only means of protest is to find another one and do it all over again. The treasure hunt through the chillies is fun. Just when you think you've picked every last nugget, a little rustling around reveals another, and another, and another. By the time your mouth can take no more, it's numb and that means you can start on the chillies. It's a mission but it's worth it. Rather like a Dostoyevsky book, I'm not sure anyone's actually finished one of these but everyone declares their love for it nonethelessless. You might describe it as a statement dish, were your mouth able to make any statement at all. Don't panic. The sensation dies down after about 20 minutes alongside two or three beers which the house are happy to bring you quickly. If that doesn't quench the flames, Shaftesbury Ave has a handily placed Fire station. After the madness you are then left with a very pleasant feeling. One that says you've been out, eaten something bold, interesting, mad. And you're ready for action. Step back out into the Soho night and go get some. there's plenty around and if you've dined at Barshu, you are well primed to crack on.

Everything at every table looked delicious, and the portions were generous but not over the top. We had the egg and seaweed soup -- good but wouldn't order again as the seaweed was very large and difficult to eat and a bit overpowering. The twice-cooked pork was great. A bit on the salty side and not as spicy as I anticipated, but full of flavor. We also ordered their version of kung-pow chicken, which was different than what I'm accustomed to and preferable. Good chunks of chicken, roasted peanuts and a tangy sauce. Be warned that like a lot of places here any rice will cost you extra, you won't just get white rice with your meal. Would definitely return here and try more if only I lived in London!

Finding properly spicy food in this country is a bit hit-or-miss to begin with, but to find really mouthwatering Szechuan cuisine (er... Sichuan?) has been a near impossibility until now. From the moment I walked into this modest-looking restaurant, I had a positive vibe. Whether it was the delicious scents wafting about, or the fact that the staff and various other patrons were speaking in Mandarin, I knew from the very start that I'd come to the right place. I'll be honest in saying that my least favourite dishes that we shared family-style (of course) were the ones recommended by the staff. Perhaps they were steering us toward things that Brits like more? But the fried potatoes were basically crispy Chinese french fries and the house dumplings, whilst they looked to be covered in delicious sauce, came out surprisingly flavourless to me. That said, everything else was superb. The smashed cucumbers went down a treat, the 'ants climbing a tree' (ma ee sang su) and mapo tofu both had that rich aromatic Szechuan peppercorn heat to them. And the twice-cooked pork dish served with steam buns is an absolute hunger slayer. Be prepared to order a couple bottles of Tsing Tao to balance out the heat in the dishes, but the mild tingling ma la sensation is a big part of the reason to come. I fully expect to work this into my regular rotation of dining destinations now that I know it's here!

The decor is dated but you won't come here for ambience. It's basic and the staff are nice but once again do what is necessary to get you fed and out. It's not really cheap place but maybe that is just me and locals might think it's reasonable. I had the braised beef in chili oil one of my favourite Sichuan dishes and it was nice. Not as spicy as I like it but food flavour. The salad of cucumber and the spinach with peanuts were fabulous and I enjoyed my meal. Service was ok and the Asian staff were not very engaging or forthcoming with recommendations. Maybe it's a language thing but I am not sure. It's about £10-25 per person depending on what you eat. The hot pot was for a minimum of 2 people and about £22 per person without drinks. I liked the food here and would come back again for Sichuan food. The flavour is food and the ingredients were fresh.

I called the restaurant to make sure they offered Peking Duck which they confirmed. When my order of Peking Duck came it was not good. The duck seemed like it was made then frozen then steamed or microwaved. The skin was loose and floppy not at all crispy. I didn't order Crispy Duck but Peking Duck is not supposed to come with loose and floppy skin. I complained and sent it back. I just ended up ordering cha shu bao instead. My husband ordered a Mapu Tofu. The food tasted fine but we both ended up needing a toilet before too long.

We came up to Shanghai Modern and after a quick glance of their giant menu (I mean literally giant it's huge and outside of the restaurant) this had to be the place we were going to go to. They had pretty much everything we were looking for. We sat down and the staff was quick to come check in on us. We of course had to start off with some Dim Sum and of course half a Peking Duck. For Dim Sum we got the Wonton In Garlic And Chilli Oil and the Signature Pork Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) The dumplings were fresh and amazing. I really could have kept them coming all night but there was more food that we had to get. The Peking Duck was also great. Crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. I was a little bummed that it was served with Chinese Pancakes and not Bao Buns but it was still amazing. Now to the main event as we got a lot... We went with the: Fried Chicken With Dried Chilli Spicy Szechuan Beef Broth Kung Po Chicken Shanghai Fried Noodles With Shredded Pork Crispy Chilli Shredded Beef Fried Chicken With Dried Chilli - This was tied for my favorite dish. It's always one of my go-tos. I sounds like it's just fried pieces of chicken with chili but it's so much more then that. Just so much flavor. It you have never had it it's a must. Crispy Chilli Shredded Beef - This was also tied for my favorite. I love a good crispy beef dish. The sauce was great and the beef was still so tender. Kung Po Chicken - This is just a classic that is always going to be good and is a crowd pleaser Shanghai Fried Noodles With Shredded Pork - Did you really get Chinese of you don't get noodles? Of course not. These noodles we so fresh and the sauce was great. We didn't even realize we were getting pork in it when we ordered so that was a nice surprise. Spicy Szechuan Beef Broth - This was for sure our wild card dish. The beef was great but this is a true Szechuan dish. You could tell by the fresh peppers and how peppery it was. If you're not ready if it that flavor blast is going to get you. We had an amazing time and of course meal at Shanghai Modern. If you are in London and want some amazing Chinese with all of the offerings this is the place to come to.
